answered, “I think you are right.” “We are trying to build a team, but it is not easy after Lake Placid (1980 Olympics) and the World
Championships in Gothenberg,” said Czech coach Ludek Bukac. “We have to start from the beginning. It is probably one of the youngest teams in the Canada Cup.”

“You can’t afford to take all those penalties against the Russians because it’s just a matter of time until they score,” said Sweden’s Anders Kallur. “I think what happened when they lost their confidence on the power
play against Canada (in an exhibition game) because the penalty killing with Butch Goring and Bob Gainey was so good, and it took a while for them to get it back. But if you think today was bad, you should see them
go 5-on-4 on the big ice surface in Europe. There, it’s just incredible.” Following the game, Sweden’s Anders Kallur, Tomas Jonsson and Borje Salming chased after American
referee Bob Henry, upset about the game’s officiating. Sweden captain Anders Hedberg moved his teammates away from the ref before things got too heated.

has a scoring touch but great quickness.” C Wayne Gretzky CAN now has seven points in two tournament games and is tied for the Canada Cup
scoring lead with teammate Gilbert Perreault “We looked for a close game from the USA this time,” said Team Canada head coach Scotty Bowman. “Since
(the 1976 Canada Cup), U.S. players have flocked to the NHL and their team won the Olympics in ’80 so their team has improved an enormous amount in five years.”

“My kingdom for a sniper,” said USA general manager Lou Nanne. “There isn’t a gifted , natural goal scorer, a guy with a Wayne Gretzky or Mike Bossy or Guy Lafleur touch around the net, in U.S. hockey. If there were,
he’d certainly be here.” “I know people have pointed to this game as some sort of an Olympic re-match,” said Team USA coach Bob
Johnson. “But, really, there’s no comparison, even though we have seven or eight players from that Lake Placid team. That team had been together for seven months, it was playing in front of home fans and there’s
no way we could duplicate that sort of emotion even though our players were up very high for the game.”

Stastny said hello and chatted with several of their former Czech national teammates

Prior to the game, organizers mistakenly played the national anthem of Italy, rather than that of Finland. The Finnish players stood at the blueline for about 20 seconds of music, then began to skate around
in their end of the ice. Finland finished in last place in this tournament…the same spot they finished in in 1976

With Gilbert Perreault out with a broken ankle, Marcel Dionne took his spot on the left side with Wayne
Gretzky and Guy Lafleur. “When Gil was there, Guy and I let him handle the puck a great deal,” said
Gretzky. “But with Marcel there, Guy handled the puck a lot more. Marcel is so quick and he likes to roam around, looking for holes, that it really wasn’t such a big change.”
G Don Edwards CAN made his only appearance of the tournament, giving Mike Liut a breather

“It’s not my job to evaluate the opponent, but to me our team was more intense…we played more with the heart,” said Czech coach Ludek Bukac. “It was our will…it was much stronger than the Swedish team’s. When
we got two goals ahead, three goals ahead, our rivals were broken.” For the third game of the tournament, Sweden’s Anders Hedberg was named his team’s outstanding player

Czechoslovakia and Soviet Union tied 1-1 in the round-robin portion of this tournament “We just didn’t seem to be fighting for the puck,” sighed Frantisek Cernik TCH. “We wanted to forecheck like
we did in the first game, but for some reason we didn’t. I don’t know why; the motivation didn’t seem to be there.”
Sergei Shepelev URS received the penalty shot after D Arnold Kadlec TCH fell on the puck in the goal crease. It was the first penalty shot in Canada Cup history, dating back to 1976.

Canada defeated Soviet Union 7-3 in the round-robin portion of the tournament D Denis Potvin CAN said, “They got some big saves from their goalie; we didn’t.”
“We didn’t expect to win and certainly by not such a score,” said Soviet coach Viktor Tikhonov. “Maybe the two earlier games against us (Canada won both, 3-2, in an exhibition, 7-3, last Wednesday in the round-
robin) made the Canadian team think we were weak.” “It wasn’t a seven-goal game but we have no excuses,” said Canada’s coach Scotty Bowman. “The real
scoring chances were very even, maybe 14-12 for them but we saw what a really strong goalie can do.” “We were able to get on them in their end in the two earlier games but, this time, their defence had
adjusted,” Canadian defenceman and co-captain (with D Denis Potvin) Larry Robinson said. “They were back for the puck and had it on the move before our forecheckers could get to it.”
“Now, we’re probably going to hear about this for four years,” said Wayne Gretzky, held pointless for only the second time in the tournament (v. Czechoslovakia).
Following the game, as has been well chronicled, the Soviets tried to spirit the Canada Cup back to the USSR. They were halted by security people at the airport. Tournament director Alan Eagleson insisted that
the Cup stay in Canada. The Soviets claimed that Eagleson's decision was made "in violation of the traditions existing at international competitions".
In their workout on the day before the game, the Soviets devoted time to their “Kid Defence,” an approach to halting Wayne Gretzky, especially in reducing his effectiveness when he sets up behind the
net.

Canada defeated USA 8-3 in round-robin portion of this tournament
“We knew the U.S. would be tough but we didn’t know they would be this tough,” said Team Canada coach Scotty Bowman. “We simply have to play better on Sunday and we have some work to do before then. We
had trouble, it seemed, bouncing back in 48 hours after we played a tough game. But I’m certain we’ll be ready for Sunday’s game.”
Wayne Gretzky, in the wake of the left-elbow slash he received in Canada’s last game, did not take any face-offs tonight
Following the game, Gretzky said, “Hey, Team Canada has gone all this distance and hasn’t lost yet — even our two intra-squad games ended in ties. So we don’t plan on losing now.”
