Brazil takes first victory at U21 Men’s Pan American Cup in Gatineau

GATINEAU, Canada, June 23, 2015 – Brazil swept El Salvador 3-0 (25-11, 25-11, 25-14) to take the first victory in Pool B action of the U21 Men’s Pan American Cup, which got underway Tuesday at the Centre Sportif de Gatineau.

The South American squad, already qualified for the World Championships this September in Mexico, dominated their opponents in attacks (34-13), blocks (4-2) and serving aces (6-0).

Caio Oliveira and Lucas Madaloz were the top scorer for Brazil with eight points each. Mauricio Rivas led El Salvador with five points.

Samuel Valdez, captain of El Salvador: “I think we started really nervous and we were thinking about playing against the name ‘Brazil’ having the tradition of being number one. So that’s the truth, we were playing against the name. Unfortunately, in the end we had a revelation and started playing better and loosening ourselves up. We’re really looking forward for tomorrow’s game.”

Ricardo Rivera, head coach of El Salvador Head: “Countries like ours looking forward to playing against big names like Brazil. Our nerves betrayed us and it had an impact on the final result. We did not have a good start, but we are positive for tomorrow.”

Fernando Kreling, captain of Brazil: “It’s always good to start our championship with a victory. It’s normal to be a little nervous and make some mistakes. We won because we controlled the game. I think we played very well but there are many things to do better during the tournament.”

Page 18: Bulletin No 2 U21 Pan Am Cup, Gatineau- Canada

Leonardo Afonso Seix: head coach of Brazil: “I think it was a good start for us, we know these were two very different countries in a volleyball situation. We have a big tradition and we know about El Salvador, who are trying to develop volleyball in their country. We tried to play hard and to show our respect for them.”

The first day of the continental event continues with the Barbados-United States match, also in Pool B. The host country will face Mexico in Pool A action.

US opens U21 Men’s Pan Am Cup campaign with easy victory over Barbados

GATINEAU, Canada, June 23, 2015 – The United States opened their U21 Men’s Pan Am Cup campaign in Pool B with an easy victory over Barbados 3-0 (25-17, 25-11, 25-18) Tuesday at the Centre Sportif de Gatineau.

The North American team, already qualified for the World Championships this September in Mexico, prevailed over their Caribbean opponents in attacks (39-20), blocks (7-5) and serving aces (6-0).

Captain John Hatch led the US attack with 11 points, one more than Brenden Sander, who played the first two sets only. Jabarry Goodridge was the top scorer for Barbados with nine points, three more than captain Ammuniki Wood.

Ammuniki Wood, captain of Barbados: "We need to work on our passing. We started the game with a few jitters, but then we realized that all players are human. The height difference was not that much of a factor and after the first set we realized we can play at

Page 19: Bulletin No 2 U21 Pan Am Cup, Gatineau- Canada

this level. For our next game against El Salvador, our mentality is to win, but we need to improve our passing."

John Stuart, head coach of Barbados: "I believe we did a reasonable job, but we had a problem with the passing. If your pass is bad, chances are you will lose. This is our first U21 Pan Am competition. Our goal is to get to the quarterfinals. From there, anything can happen."

John Hatch, captain of the United States: “It was a good start, and good to get in the flow of things. We connected with each other as a team and I thought it was a good win. We can do a lot of things better but this was a good start for us.”

Dan Friend, head coach of the United States: “I thought we did some nice things. In the beginning you always have a few jitters the first match but after that we settled down and I thought we got into both our offensive and defensive systems. I thought we did a nice job from the serving line by putting some pressure on them which ultimately put us in a position to win each game. We were able to make a few changes in the third game and get those guys the same opportunity to work through some things. I think we will hopefully get better each match from where we ae at and ultimately put ourselves in a position to win the tournament. “

Undefeated in Pool B, the United States and Brazil will clash on Wednesday. Earlier in the day, El Salvador and Barbados will play for a crucial victory that may qualify the winner to the quarterfinals.

Canada prevails over Mexico at U21 Men’s Pan American Cup in Gatineau

GATINEAU, Canada, June 23, 2015 – Canada took the lead in Pool A of the U21 Men’s Pan American Cup with a 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-14) victory over Mexico Tuesday at the Centre Sportif de Gatineau.

Both teams, who will play the World Championships this September in Mexico, played very evenly in the first two sets. Mexico overcame a 13-16 deficit and took advantage of some mistakes by the host country to take the lead 19-17. With the score 23-23, Canada sealed the victory following a failed serve by their opponents and an ace by Blake Scheerhoorn.

Both teams continued to play at a similar level, but Canada finished strong 25-23 with an ace by Arthur Szwarc.

Page 20: Bulletin No 2 U21 Pan Am Cup, Gatineau- Canada

The host squad played more effectively in the third set and their strong serve and blocking was crucial in securing a 25-14 victory and 3-0 win overall.

Brandon Koppers led the Canadian attack with 11 points, one more than Blake Scheerhoorn. Alan Martinez (8 points) and Yostin Frias (7) were the leading scorers for Mexico.

Enrique Ugalde, captain of Mexico: "Overall, we had a good game. The first two sets were close. We felt the absence of

our main setter, who could not travel here, but we need to adjust accordingly. The first two sets, it could have gone either way. But in the third set, we some our focus at times. Canada made less mistakes and served harder. We showed today we can be competitive against a top team like Canada. This first match allowed us to know where we are at and we have great expectations for our next match against Chile tomorrow to continue progressing in this tournament. Hosting the World Championships also gives us extra motivation to perform well."

Victor Porras, head coach of Mexico: "We had two good sets, but we need to close strong. The game showed us we can play at par with strong teams like Canada. We need to adjust a few things and the lack of international experience in some players was also seen today. Our players understand the importance of the next game and will prepare to perform better tomorrow.”

John Barrett, head coach of Canada: “We played a very nervous first match of the tournament at home which I think is very normal for a team at this stage. We’ve done a little bit of training but we haven’t played much competition so I would say this is an expected match and I’m very happy to win it, and have won it 3-0. I’m happy we had the chance to play more than our starting six or seven players. A good start, we’re going to get better and hopefully quickly.”

Page 21: Bulletin No 2 U21 Pan Am Cup, Gatineau- Canada

Ryan Nickifor, captain of Canada: “I think we came out a little nervous and shaky and it took us a little while to get the nerves out but once that happened I thought we played really well in the third. Moving on I think we can play a little more free and a little bit better. It was a big thing getting the first game out of the way. I’m excited for the rest of the week, we have a deep bench and it’s very exciting to compete finally after three weeks of training and seeing it all come together.”

Mexico returns to the court on Wednesday to face Chile, the other team in Pool A. Canada’s next game will be against the South American team on Thursday.
