RICHARD J . D ALE Y MAYOR

CITY OF CHICAGO

OFFICE OF THE MAYOR

Down through the years, the city of Chicago - heartland of the Midwest

and the "nation's most exciting city"- has attracted and encouraged artists and inspired

artistic talent and the result has been an important contribution to our

cultural growth and development.

The Art Institute, artists' organizations, clubs devoted to the stimulation of

creative art, our art galleries, and our many schools and academies for the arts, have all

played a significant role in this development.

The No-jury Ex hibition is an impressive demonstration not only of our city's

present artistic vigor, but of our community's sensitivity to new ideas. As Mayor, I share

the pride of our people generally in the artistic leadership which gives recognition to

the great and varied talents of the many artists who live and create in Chicago.

Chicago has long been the home of creative a1·t, and as Mayor I believe strongly

in lending my support to all of the cultural endeavors in our community. It is in this

spirit that the city has joined with the artists and the Art Institute of Chicago in helping

to arrange this exhibition for the artists of Greater Chicago.

RICHARD J. DALEY

MAYOR

THE 1957 CHICAGO ARTISTS NO-JURY EXHIBITION is probably

the largest exhibition of art ever held in the mid-west. It was

open to all artists, residing in Illinois within 100 miles of

Chicago, without the limitations imposed by jury selection.

It is unique in several respects: it has the recognition and

support of the Art Institute, the major art museum in the

mid-west; it offers prizes totaling $8,825, contributed by the

Art Institute, and awarded by a distinguished jury of awards;

and the Art Institute is selecting its next annual Chicago and

Vicinity Exhibition from the works on display.

Represented in the exhibition are artists of all schools

of thought and all degrees of prominence, from recognized

leaders in the contemporary art world to those who pursue

their art careers in their spare time. Exhibitions such as this

bring recognition to all artists by the public, which, in the

final analysis, is the most important of all art juries.

The extraordinary response of Chicago artists to the

invitation to exhibit is conclusive proof of the need for no-

jury exhibitions, and for a permanent municipal gallery in

which these exhibitions may be held.

I wish to thank Mayor Richard]. Daley for his interest

in the exhibition and for his sympathetic understanding of

the problems facing the creative artists of our city. I wish also

to thank the Art Institute, its Board of Trustees and staff, the

distinguished group of ladies and gentlemen who served on

our committees, and the participating artists and art organi-

zations who have made possible this splendid demonstration

of art in a democratic society.
