History

N amed after the first superintendent of the William Thompson Masonic School, Cropley

House is a stately two storey Inter-war Georgian Revival mansion situated off Watkins Road,

Baulkham Hills. By 1925 the school was in need of expansion and arrangements

were made for the senior boys to be housed in a hostel away from the main buildings of the school.

It was a building that could accommodate up to 100 boys and was located on land purchased in

1923. The building’s construction was completed in 1927 for the price of 13,152 pounds.

The original building had a dining hall downstairs along with a large assembly hall. On this level

were also the staff rooms, pantries, a ‘boot’ room, visitors wash rooms and the private quarters

for the Deputy Superintendent and Matron. Upstairs were four dormitories, each accommodating

24 boys, bathrooms and lockers.

From 1942 – 1945 during the Second World War the

site was occupied by the 103RD Australian General

Hospital of the Australian Army. The school site was

handed back to the Masonic Lodge 4½ years later

in 1947 and the official reopening took place on 8th

November 1947 with estimates of 10000 people in

attendance. The Commemorative Tablet recording

the occupation of the Masonic School by the

Australian Army was then consecrated and unveiled.

The School then reopened and operated until 1977.

The Masonic School closed in December 1973 when

the Masons sold it to the Baulkham Hills Shire Council.

Cropley House continued to accommodate senior

boys until 1977. The primary school buildings were

re-opened as a Community Leisure Learning Centre

in 1979. Thompson Hall, the only timber building,

was burnt down by arsonists in 1995 and rebuilt and

opened by the Council in 2006 for community use.

In 2017 the venue was granted tenancy to a private company and

was given a new lease on life with extensive renovations. Re-opening in September 2018, Cropley House is now one of the area’s most sought after venues.19
