Businesses still closed from April floodThe Roast House is still closed following April’s flood as its new owner waits patiently for the place to dry out.The Roast House is one of just a few Richmond businesses that has not reopened or has been temporarily closed due to ongoing repairs. But owner Garry Higgins, who only took over the place two months prior to the flood, remains positive that the business will be up and running shortly and says the insurance company has actu-ally been great to work with. “The insurance company has been really good throughout the process. You’ve got people out there that have a lot of negative things to say about them but respectively it’s been good and I can’t knock them, they’ve been supportive and it’s made things easy.”Speaking about the night of the flood, Garry says he phoned Tasman District Council at 5pm con-cerned that he had a blocked drain at the front of his shop. “At six o’clock it was at my doorstep

and I rung them again. But then within half an hour it was coming through the floor. It was just incredible.”While some machinery had water damage and had to be replaced, Garry says the most difficult process has been waiting for things to dry out. “It was more of a frustration on the drying process. That took so long. I thought I might be open late May. It’s been an inconvenience for my custom-ers but it has given us a chance to give the shop a revamp. Life is good though, every day I wake up and I see the sun shine and I meet some new friends.”He says he continues to field phone calls from customers wondering when the store would be opening again. “There’s always someone popping in two to three times a week saying ‘when are you opening up?’ Everyone is just dying to have a feed but that’s brilliant you know. It just shows that we’re doing something right.”

Rain washes away war chestThe weekend’s weather bomb has emptied the council’s emergency fund yet again.Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne says a “war chest” was built up a couple of years ago in case of an emergency, but council keeps having to use it due to severe weather. “I don’t know what the current balance is but we are using it rather than building up a bal-ance,” he says.Richard was unaware how much the cleanup will cost, on top of five other recent natu-ral disasters, including April’s flood and was unable to comment on the exact figure left in the emer-gency fund. “I’m hoping that we will be able to continue to put money aside as we are and let it build up but in the meantime when we are having these events we are us-ing it.”The mayor was out in Riwaka on Monday surveying the dam-age out there and says all roads in the district are now open.

With these events occurring more regularly, Richard placed confidence in the Civil Defence

strategy which in-volved both councils and other agencies. “Each time we have these events there is a gathering of the peo-ple that need to so we can insure people’s life and properties are safe.”But he admits it’s dif-ficult to prepare for

a weather bomb so the focus goes on planning the response and recovery stages. “In this case the roading con-

tractors went out, there were 14 crews, and by the end of the day all of the roads that had been closed were open to at least one lane so it’s a very heightened and quick response.”Damage caused by the heavy rainfall over the weekend was mainly in Golden Bay and Ri-waka with Marahau woman Jude Hivon, 63, losing her life after a landslide demolished her home. The damage to some busi-nesses was substantial, includ-ing tourist attraction, Anatoki Salmon Farm. The Golden Bay farm had most of its living salmon killed in the floods.

Reality TV shows have sparked a trend with Nelsonians jumping on the band-wagon and creating their own versions of shows, such as the UK’s ‘Come Dine With Me’ and Australia’s ‘My Kitchen Rules.’The shows see amateur home cooks face off in pairs or as individuals, com-peting to design and prepare a three course menu in their own home. The contestants take turns to cook and dine as judging guests, rating the meal at the end of the night on presentation, skill and taste, with an overall winner deter-mined at the end of the competition. Due to the success of such shows, Nel-sonians have been trying their hand at the cooking challenges. Richmond woman Chris Tait partici-pated in the third and final round of a ‘Come Dine With Me’ event that she or-ganised with friends over the weekend. She rates the experience as “awesome” and says she’s “never laughed so much in my life”. Chris and her friends have each put in $40 as a cash prize which the overall winner will take home. Suzy Evans, a guest at the final, says the group became inspired to entertain at home because of the popular TV show. “Because it’s winter, people tend to stay inside and

not go out. We created this so we could all get together and go to other people’s homes.”They admit there’s been a lot of laughs along the way and only a few minor disasters, with competitors Adam and Hannah Hills having to make both their dessert and their mains twice on the night they were hosts.Nicky Kolk, of Brightwater, has also or-ganised a version of the popular show, with two “couple friends”. She says it

was a great success and they were able to share each others recipes at the end of it all. “Getting everyone together was great, it’s one of those things you kind of don’t get around to organising until you agree to something like this, then you have to go out. And it’s great.” Nicky says the worst part was having to judge friends’ dinners but it was all in fun. “None of us took it too seriously and we’re all still friends so we can’t have been too rough on each other.”

Attendance figures ‘don’t tell full story’Tim King says the council meeting attendance figures released last week don’t tell the full story but he still believes it’s a good idea to make them public.Last week Waimea Weekly released the figures which show how often Tasman District council-lors attended each council and standing commit-tee meeting since the last election in 2010.Those figures showed Rich-mond ward councillor Zane Mirfin had only attended 93 out of a possible 120 meetings with Tim the second lowest having attended 101.But Tim says council-lors attend a wide range of other meetings that some-times conflict. “Mislead-ing isn’t the right word but it doesn’t tell the full story as to how much time and effort peo-ple put in outside the core council meetings,” he says. “For example today I’ve been in Wel-lington for the rural provincial meeting so I wasn’t at a community services meeting.” If there is a clash, Tim says councillors gener-ally prioritise which meeting they attend. “Hav-ing said that, fundamentally your job is to attend council meetings where the key decisions that af-fect the community are made. You’re paid by the ratepayer so the expectation is that you attend as many as you’re able to.”

Liquor store won’t open next to preschoolRaeward Fresh has applied for a liquor license to sell craft beer and local wine, ending speculation that a liquor store was opening next to a preschool and down the road from Garin College.Rumours that a liquor store could be mov-ing into the site had circled when Coup-land’s announced it was leaving the prem-ises next door and those were sparked again when an “off licence” was applied to the Christchurch-based District Licensing Agency for the Raeward Fresh site on 912 Main Rd Stoke. However, it has become a non-issue for the neighbouring Rich-

mond Early Learning Centre and college with Raeward Fresh owner Justin Blackler confirming it would not be a liquor store, citing that the liquor licence was applied under the business of “supermarket” in or-der to stock local brews in his own store. “I have absolutely no intention of opening a liquor store, we certainly don’t want to do that and the details of our application prove that,” he says.Richmond Early Learning Centre is right next door to the premises, but having been oblivious to the rumours, spokesperson Karenne Mines had no reason to welcome

the news that it would not be a liquor store. “I’m not worried about it. If it had been a liquor store I might have been but if it’s just

like a supermarket outlet then it’s fine by me.”Garin head teacher John Boyce admits he had heard rumours “way back” about a liq-uor store going near the site, although he says he would have been more concerned about the preschool instead of Garin Col-lege, which is further down Champion Rd. “Half the dairies in the country sell alcohol and we’d have kids in that shop every day but they wouldn’t be buying alcohol. There are worse moral things, had it been a ca-sino going in there I’d be more concerned,” he says.

Richmond’s first ever church of any denomination will cel-ebrate its 170th birthday this weekend.Despite being based in four separate buildings, the Rich-mond Methodist Church is officially the oldest in the town.Minister Paul Tregurtha says it was recorded that a group of Methodists joined together for worship in 1843, and a year prior had enough num-bers to form its own church. “They were worshiping in people’s homes at that stage, they were amongst some of the early immigrants in Nel-son,” he says. “The church was on Salisbury Rd, close to the corner of Queen St but we can’t find exactly where as there is no records of it.”The church is now based at the Wensley Centre across from the Tasman District Council offices on Queen St and has been in that location for the past 50 years. Over time the congregation has reduced and Paul admits it is getting smaller “all the time” because of the age. “On a very good Sunday we might get 30 people here, sadly that’s

the case, we haven’t got many young families and that’s the reality of it.”Amongst the 30, there is a number that have been in-volved with the church for quite some time, including a 90 year old woman. “We’re hoping she can come cut the cake because she’s been in-volved for many years.”Paul says the 170 year mile-stone is incredibly significant. “They have continued to live their faith by not only wor-shiping but by serving the community through various outlets.” The schedule for the celebra-tion will include an afternoon function on Saturday begin-ning at 1:30pm. “There will be about 70 peo-ple at that. We’ve invited past ministers and others with af-filiations to the congregation in the past but no longer live here. It’s important to bring everyone together and to share memories.”A special church service will be held the following day.

Volunteer referee Craig Barron receives a $100 Rich-mond Mall voucher from Tasman Rugby Union’s Les Edwards on Saturday. Photo: Andrew Board.

Two local referees have already benefited from the generosity of Richmond Mall, each receiving a $100 voucher as a way to say “thanks”.Richmond Mall has teamed up with Tasman Rugby Union to reward those parents who give up their Saturday morn-ings and referee junior rugby games. Each week for ten weeks one referee will be selected to win the prize and on Saturday, TRU’s Les Edwards handed over the second of the vouchers to Stoke’s Craig Barron.

Craig says he was surprised and stoked to have been selected. “I was quite surprised, I read about the promotion the week before in the paper and thought ‘oh yeah it’s the kind of thing that never happens to you’. So I was shocked when he came over with it.”Craig says this is his third year of refereeing junior rugby and he does it because he has a son that plays and it’s something he enjoys. Les handed the first voucher to Nelson volunteer referee Doug Paulin.

Refs get rewarded

The highest ever uptake of the flu vaccine has health officials hopeful it will help bring flu rates down and save millions of dollars for the local economy.Nelson Marlborough District Health Board re-leased figures last week that show close to 40,000 in the two regions have had a “flu shot”, up on the almost 33,000 from last year.Dr Ed Kiddle, the region’s medical officer of health, says each year the flu puts strain on Nel-son Hospital with some elective surgeries put off while hospital beds and staff time are taken up with flu patients. But it isn’t just the hospital that suffers from peo-ple with the flu, he says millions of dollars is lost in revenue each year as work-places lose staff to the illness.Ed says the high uptake of the flu vaccine is positive for the region and will hopefully mean fewer Nelso-nians get influenza with the season due to start in the next week or so. “Indications so far are that this will be a fairly typical influenza season. Hopefully we’ll be a bit better off because more people will be vaccinat-ed against it so the impacts on the community and on the hospital will be less.”While many at-risk patients, who are eligible for free vaccination, have taken up the vaccine there are still many who have not.Influenza vaccination is free for all people 65 years and over, pregnant women, or those who have a medical condition that puts them at risk.

Local TV star opens restaurantSoon the community will be able to judge for themselves just how good a cook Paula Saengthian-Ngam is, as the Stoke mum and MasterChef final-ist opens the doors to her brand new café.Paula’s Plate will open in the former Pomeroy’s premises on Hardy St in mid July and will bring something “a bit different” to Nelson’s café scene says Paula.“It’s going to be welcoming, with great food and great coffee. I think it will be really special, and I hope other people think so too.”The café is the “cherry on top” of a great experience for Paula, who says before Masterchef, would never have had the confidence to open the doors to her own café.“It’s always been a dream of mine but I never thought I could do it. The show taught me so much about my own strength and confidence. It was an ex-tremely positive experience for me.”Paula’s Plate, which Paula says is a joint venture between herself and

sister Jo Kilkelly, will open with just a small lunch menu that will update frequently from week to week.“I want to take it slowly and not take on too much because I want to get it right. There’s always room for devel-opment.”While fans are eager to try her infa-mous duck salad which scored an unprecedented 20 points in the final of the show, she says she doesn’t want to give too much away, other than the menu will feature “unique, yummy, and fresh food.”With the café almost set to open the doors, all that remains to be complet-ed is getting “the big tick” from the council, get the kitchen plumbed in and finish decorating says Paula.“It’s just small things to finish off now, it’s looking like it could be ready to a point this weekend, but it won’t be of-ficially ready until July,” she says.

“That sign [which shows how deep the water is] is just not good enough. The townies aren’t used to water going across. People look at Google Maps and assume every-one else must be driving through this. People have no idea how to ap-

proach it, you say pass with care but people come down at 100 km/h.”Frank also believes drivers are una-ware that both fords are different depths. “They come through the first one but that’s when they come unstuck. The second was one two metres deep and I’d say you could only

drive through if it’s a foot deep.”He says it is time for Tasman Dis-trict Council to do a better job at warning drivers, otherwise he will put his own sign up. “I’ll put up a score sheet and have the make of the cars that have drowned, just to make people aware that water is actually bad for your car.”

Top young fruit growers will go head-to-head next week to be crowned the region’s best at the annual Nelson Young Fruit Grower competition.Six competitors will battle it out in an intense one-day competition on Friday June 21 at Hod-dy’s Orchard, Richmond, with the winner going on to compete for the prestigious national Young Grower of the Year title at the Horticulture New Zealand Conference in July.“The Nelson Young Fruit Grower competition is a chance for our industry to celebrate the emerg-ing talent of young growers which highlights the role they play in the future of New Zealand’s hor-ticultural reputation,” says Andrew Kininmonth, co-ordinator of the competition. “Each year the level of the competition increases and I always look forward to seeing what the competitors will

bring to such a challenging and fun event.” Essential skills needed to run a fruit growing business will be tested with activities focusing on machinery safety, fertilisers, irrigation, fencing, human resources, first aid, pests and diseases, fruit quality and block analysis. The six competitors come from around the Nel-son region: Jess Charles, Orchard Leading Hand for Inglis Horticulture; Harley Thompson, Inglis Horticulture; Steve Thomas, Kiwifruit New Va-riety coolstore manager for Thomas Bros; Aaron Finlay Inglis Horticulture; Canaan Balck, Block Manager for Hoddys Orchards; and Jonathan Sutton, Daelyn PartnershipThe Nelson Young Fruit Grower of the Year Competition will be held on Friday June 21 from 9am to 3.30pm at Hoddy’s Orchard.

Good read:I have just enjoyed reading the June 11 Weekly. Congratulations. It was

full of good and hopeful news. It made me feel cheerful. (Via email).

International airport ‘pie in sky’:As a businessman myself and a per-son that comes from an airline fam-

ily, I sort of think that we may end up with two average airline services, instead of the one good one we have now. Plus I think people forget there are two smaller airlines already servicing the area and as for an international airport, that is pie in the sky kind of stuff, no pun intended. Blenheim has got one up on us because its airport can handle Boeing 737s. (Via text).

Free milk in schools, a good thing? What about preschools. Are they not important enough?

Naomi Tony Smith-Knudsen.

One step at a time people, Rome wasnt built in a day, good on them

for making the first step. Too many people are ready to moan about anything. Try be happy for once it helps the spirit heaps, be happy that these kids get free milk. Teena Scott.

Great idea, their young bones need the extra calcium.

Bonnie-Ryan Fairbrother.

Do changes need to be made to bars opening hours?

Closing earlier isn’t gonna make it safer. People would just head into

town earlier than usual. And if there’s go-ing to be trouble, closing earlier isn’t going to eliminate that. Ange O’Regan.

All it’s going to do is encourage house parties in my opinion, at

least in town there’s bouncers to supervise. No need to punish everyone because of a few idiots. Sarah Brown.

Maybe keep the bars open all night might solve the problem I don’t

think shutting earlier is much off an ad-vantage. Aaron Guyer.

I think better lighting along that street would help. At night time it

always looks so uninviting and with alleys everywhere. Not a street I’d want to walk down alone at night time. Victoria White.

Waimea Village:Two excellent letters in last week’s Waimea Weekly. Thank you G Ew-

ers - yes, we have done the numbers - pre-cisely why we are pursuing the action we have in place. Management accuse com-mittee of being the sole perpetrators of the ‘wasted money’. The words “majority rule” don’t seem to register – the majority elect-ed this committee to act on our behalf and

they do exactly that. In 2010 management tried to increase our levy from $80 to $180 per month, arbitration brought that down to $125. In 2011 we were threatened with $285/month, their arbitration reduced this to around $189 – management needed money to cover their wasted arbitration costs - instigated by them. Now they want extra to cover legals and court costs that haven’t been in-curred yet, and all upfront. In re-cent days we have been compared to Brown Acre Villas, Motueka – check that out. Their monthly costs include insurance on build-ings, maintenance on buildings, cleaning and all ground mainte-nance costs, increased levies kept within the CPI each year, among other things – we pay for all of these outgoings, on top of heavy rates and receive very little in re-turn from management. We have also been called a ‘gated community’ on two occasions (by management). That’s laughable – do they have any concept of what a gated community is? I think not. A sign at the entrance once read “Built with the Retired in Mind” – management have removed this sign but not before the majority had bought into the village believ-ing living on a retirement income would be manageable. We are

calling for the percentage of our lease set aside for repairs and replacement to be put in a trust so that our managers cannot walk away with it. So far they have wasted thou-sands on keeping accountants, lawyers and arbitrators in business and blame us for that too! Joan Eason, Waimea Village.

When Maxine Hornell moved to Nelson with her two young daughters and not much else, she says the help and support of Nelson people helped her get back on feet. Now she wants to “pay it forward”.In the wake of April’s floods, Maxine established a Pay it Forward Facebook page, aimed at help-ing people who had lost so much. The idea was simple, any unwanted goods were donated to her and her team of helpers and those who needed it came and picked up what they wanted. No money exchanged hands from any of the three parties. She says the response was almost instant and amazing. So much so that she has decided to continue it from their new base in Tahunanui.“There’s a need out there because we get so many people coming in. Just today [last Thursday] we had heaps of people through and we weren’t even going to open today.”Donated goods range from baby clothes to blankets to fridges and even one piano. Max-

ine says the items in most demand are warm clothes, blankets and heaters and a lot of the baby clothes they’ll be donating to Plunket for their baby clothing giveaway in Stoke tomorrow.“We don’t make anything out of this and we don’t want to. We’re happy to help out, it makes us feel good. When I came here I had nothing and needed help, the Te Korowai Trust helped me get on my feet, they were really good to me so I decided to pay it forward and help other people.”Since the Facebook page started around 900 people have “liked” it and hundreds of items have exchanged hands. There have also been chapters set up in Motueka, Ashburton and Whangarei. The Pay it Forward project has a new storage space that will be open from 11am to 2pm each Tuesday and Thursday for donation drop off and for people who need a little help.If you have items you’d like to donate email pay [email protected] or text 020 4022 3866.

Q: We are planning to live off one income next year while my husband works on his own writing project. I am nervous about being the only earner. How can we best prepare for this change?

A: It is a good idea to be prepared. Here aresome suggestions to get you in a better financial position: First pay off high interest loans (credit card, loan

company debt) Write up a budget of all income and outgoings

so you know what your costs are and how much you can spend without getting into debt Set up a smooth-pay option for your power Set up a savings account to save for a financial

buffer (enough to live for 2 months without income is ideal) Set up small weekly automatic payments to

services you use regularly such as your doctor or for school fees Prioritise spending on needs rather than wants

If your budget is very tight maybe your husband could get paid work for a few hours a week as well as writing.

Netballers at Brightwater School will be shoot-ing in style this season after receiving an ANZ netball grant. The grant, which includes netballs, bibs, spot markers, an inflation kit and a countdown tim-er, will replace the school’s old gear with equip-ment fit for pros.Netball coach Sandra Barrett says the grant would make a big difference to her players. “Each season we enter three teams of netball-ers into our local competition. Our players are so passionate about the sport and give it their all each week. We’ve recently raised money to buy new uniforms but our gear looks like it’s out of the ark and was in dire need of replac-ing – even our bibs were falling apart. This ANZ netball grant has given us everything we need. Our training sessions will improve with brand new gear and the girls are really excited about practising in brand new bibs,” she says. This year ANZ is awarding $100,000 of netball grants to help clubs, schools, social teams and fans around the country get more from the game they love.ANZ Nelson branch manager, Brad Packham says the ANZ Netball Grant Scheme was set up to help Kiwi netball players at all levels of the sport achieve their goals this season.“We know that netball is one of New Zealand’s most popular sports, but it can often be hard to raise the funds necessary to run a team or club. We established the ANZ Netball Grant Scheme to support our country’s love of netball and help as many players and fans as possible make this their best season yet. Brightwater School’s netballers show a lot of enthusiasm week in and week out, and we wanted them to have new gear to help develop their skills,” he says.

Paul Tregurtha, Waimea Methodist Parish. It has been said that history is just one thing after another. It might also be said that history is one set of op-portunities after another. The history of Methodism in Richmond shows how the people called Methodists have met each new opportunity with enterprise and resourcefulness, as well as courage and commitment. This weekend, 22-23 June, the Rich-mond Methodist Church will cel-ebrate 170 years of Methodism in Richmond. Wesleyan Methodists were among the first settlers who came to Nelson, and by 1843 were holding services in private homes in Richmond. A year later they opened the first church of any denomination in the rural village. This was a small weather board chapel situated in Salisbury Road near the corner with Queen Street. In 1866 a new church was erected on the corner of Queen St and Wensley Rd at a cost of £400. About 1910 this wooden church was shifted further back on the property on rollers pulled by a traction en-gine. This enabled the construction of the third Richmond Methodist Church building which was official-ly opened on 22 June 1913 one hun-dred years ago this Saturday. Cost-ing £965 including furnishings, this was a striking Gothic style roughcast building with seating accommoda-

tion for about 180 people. I am sure many long standing residents of Richmond will well remember this church which served as the worship centre for the Richmond Method-ist Church until 6 April 1991 when the final service was held. Sadly the building had to be abandoned as it was no longer safe to worship in. It was demolished in 1992 by which time the congregation was worship-ping in the refurbished Loney Me-morial Sunday School Hall which was renamed The Wensley Centre. It was the building from which the first kindergarten in Richmond op-erated. This remains the complex from which the Richmond Method-ist Church continues its worship and witness to the community. Of course the Richmond Methodist Church will be celebrating far more than the buildings; the church after all is peo-ple rather than bricks and mortar. Throughout its 170 years hundreds of people have participated in the life and worship of this church and have enriched its fellowship and gifted important practical service to the wider community. There will be many rich memories to be shared! The Richmond Methodist Church warmly invites anyone with any connections to its life to attend this coming weekends 170th celebra-tions on Saturday from 1.30 pm and on Sunday at 10.30 am.

Hunt for Nelson’s largest family peaks interestWhen Steve and Emma Dunne attempted to have their first child they were told Emma was infertile – which seems odd considering they now have eight children.Steve, who is the senior pastor of a Richmond church, entered his family in Café Olive’s search for the region’s largest family – the winner of which will receive a free meal. His eight children, Isaac, 18, Ruby, 16, Judah, 14, Lydia, 13, Eve, 8, Promise, 5, Elijah 4 and Esther, 3, all attend a mixture of schools in the district including Waimea College, Garin College, St Paul’s Catholic School and a local pre-school.Two of the children are adopted while one is un-der a permanent legal guardianship.Steve described each morning as organised cha-os and a circus, with all eight getting ready for their school day. The options for family vehicle are very limited with the only selection being

which colour Toyota Hiace to go for. “They’re available in various colours. We chose white and that’s about it for our choice I’m afraid,” he jokes. He says having a large family adds to the fla-vour of life. “You’re never lonely, you’re always running out of toilet paper and your food bill is astronomical. While the bills are big you cut back in other areas. It’s not as tiring as one would think but you do have to brace yourself for it re-ally.”With eight children there is of course a head count procedure in the van every morning. “People watch the movie Home Alone where they leave the boy at home and they think obvi-ously that doesn’t happen, well yeah it does.”It appears large families runs in the family too with Steve’s dad incredibly being one of 17 chil-dren. “17 bro, how about that? I’m only one of four but he’s one of 17, it’s incredible.”

Just a thought...

Fitness centre set to host charity rideThe ASB Aquatic and Fitness Centre is holding another fundraising event this weekend with members of the public being encouraged to sup-port a Pink Pilates charity ride. The ride, which is a 45 minute spin class session, will be held this Saturday from 7:30am. ASB Fitness coordinator Tineill Stevenson says themed events are held quarterly, although they wanted to do something more special and ended up linking with Pink Pilates, which is a nation-wide charity. “It goes hand-in-hand with us getting women

into exercise,” says Tineill. “The class is 45 minutes but you can adjust the level. If people want to come down and support Pink Pilates they can come down during the week as well.”The cost is $20 per bike and all money raised will go towards helping local women diagnosed with cancer regain their physical strength, improve their bodies and incorporate exercise into their lifestyle. For more information and to register, call the fit-ness centre on 543 97 55.

Fishing Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club

with

With winter weather now upon us, a lot of us put away our fishing gear for the season and wait for the warmer months to reappear. So before you do that, now is a good time to do a little preventative maintenance work on your fish-ing gear, like your rods and reels. It is also a good time to organize and stock your tackle box. You can even make your fishing checklist so you won’t forget anything the next time you go. Work on them now so they will be ready when you next head out in those warmer months. It is a good idea to clean rods with a damp rag and inspect the wrap-pings on guides. Also run a piece of cotton through the guides to check for rough places and cracks, especially on ceramic guides. Those kinds of places can cut your line, and it will happen when you are fighting a big fish. The wrappings can fail at the worst possible moment, too. So replace bad guides. Check the reel seat and make sure they are holding the reel tight. Oil any threads and bolts that tighten to clamp the reel. And make sure handles are still tight on the rod and that they don’t have any bad places that need work.Reels need to be washed on the out-side and taken apart to clean and oil the inside. Clean all internal parts of the reels then lightly oil them. During the process look for worn or broken parts that need replacing. Also remember to loosen the drag off on the reels when you are stor-ing them. Now is also a good time to think about replacing the nylon or braid on your reels. Many a good

fish is lost to nylon and braid that hasn’t been changed for ages. Sun-light, salt water, nicks and abrasions all take their toll and the fish will always exploit any weakness they can find. Buy a good quality prod-uct that will go the distance and not leave you disappointed when it fails under stress.During the season it is also easy to neglect and forget to look after your rods and reels. Best thing do to each

time you come back from a fishing excursion is to spend a few minutes on each piece of gear.Don’t spray your reels with a hose as most people do as this can force wa-ter inside the reel. Use a small spray bottle that will produce fine water mist to spray over the rod and reels.Allow them to dry and then spray them with a product like Tackle Guard. This will act as a barrier to water and salt and also will not af-fect the nylon or braid like normal CRC. Even though it is winter, the fishing will be going off at French Pass and D’urville Island.Locally the fishing has been quite good around the Cable Bay, Pepin Island area with reports of kahawai, gurnard, blue cod, trevally and the odd snapper all being caught in the past week.

Pyrro Gardyne, Helen Ratcliff and Tineill Stevenson of the ASB Aquatic and Fitness Centre will be hosting a charity ride this Saturday.

It’s been a year since local business Hire Now began servicing local agricultural, earthmoving and landscaping equipment needs. To celebrate their first birthday, the team would like to say a huge thank you to everyone in the community who has sup-ported them along the way.Hire Now owner Cam Stratford set himself a goal to fill a gap in the market 12 months ago, and ever since the public have been enjoying the convenience of hiring out everything from basic maintenance equip-ment to heavy duty contracting, farming and landscaping machinery, all from one easy location. The broad equipment hire company lo-cated on McShane Rd now offers a range of machinery and specialty equipment for commercial or residential projects, and Cam says the growth of the business in its first year comes down to continued sup-port from local people.“It’s been a great year for the business, and I just want to thank everyone for their continued support, we wouldn’t be here without it.”Hire Now is well known to local business-es and contractors throughout the region who all enjoy the convenience of having local access to machinery within the time-frame it’s required. The ease of access to the right gear when and where you need it eliminates costly delays and many local contractors have found Hire Now a great solution when it comes to last minute ma-chinery requirements. Whether a piece of their own is out of action or if they just don’t have the right machine for the job

Cam says he’s found his clients all ben-efit from having the right equipment available for hire. This saves them from having to purchase expensive machin-ery for one time use or having to search to find it elsewhere. “If anything the last year has proven to me just how convenient my cli-

ents are finding the business. It’s every-thing you need, available to hire from one place.”Cam has many items available for hire from a variety of gardening, agricultural,

farming machinery, earthmoving and landscaping equipment, including trucks, diggers, a tractor and bobcat. His collection continues to expand as the business grows and the beauty

His customers all enjoy the peace of mind that comes with his extensive expertise in mechani-

cal engineering and the knowledge that all repairs and maintenance work is completed on site and over-seen by Cam. Because he person-ally owns the equipment he ensures each piece is in perfect working order so customers know the tool will always be up to the task. “My customers trust me because I’m experienced and because I am per-sonally invested in the equipment

Barry Stratford is now doing engineer-ing work for Hire Now.

I’m hiring, and that’s the reassurance you get from hiring off a locally owned business.”The engineering business that Cam was orgin-ially doing, mainly for repairs on the hire equip-ment, has also grown and he is now supplying a service to the public. Cam finds that the two now go hand in hand, with contractors drop-ping off machinery that needs repairing or ser-vicing and hiring a replacement piece to see them through at the same time. Cam says that side of the business has surprised him and along with the purchase of a lathe, has even employed his father to take on some of the workload. “It’s been really great to see how the two businesses complement each other. They really work in

well together.”While the business has continued to flourish, so has Cam’s family who are still a big part of the business. While Lisa continues to keep the pa-per work side of the business humming along, their daughter Ruby is now 21 months old and can often be found at the Hire Now yard work-ing with mum and dad. It’s been a whirlwind first year for Hire Now, and Cam says a highlight during the last 12 months has been seeing just how supportive the community has been towards his business and watching it go from nothing to the growing suc-cess it is today.“It’s been amazing to see the support and we

Innovative Design Engineers Ltd (IDE) are Stainless Steel Fabricator Specialists, designing and building items for application in the food and beverage industries. Their workshop in Fayette lane in the Echodale Industrial Park allows the small but experienced team to put a greater

emphasis on engineered solutions for their customers.IDE ensures they always work to the highest industries standards and strive to supply the customer with a completed job that fulfills there expectations. While IDE focus on the dairy, microbreweries and

food processing industries they also undertake general engineering for customers from small to large projects. Visit the workshop or give Murray a call to have your stainless steel design and manufacturing needs met.

In an exciting change Adcock & Donaldson Contracting Ltd has become Donaldson Civil Ltd.We specialise in Civil and Roading Infrastructure as well as Directional Drilling and emergency infrastructure works. We were called upon to help get essential services back on in Christchurch after the February 2011 earthquake and have staff based there working on the rebuild. We have also helped tidy up the region after some major flooding events over the last three years and have completed slip repair work, including large retaining walls as well as river clearing work. We also helped out when the iron sand ship Taharoa Express was parked up in Tasman Bay after its cargo moved during a storm giving the ship a huge list. A specialist helicopter had to be used to get our diggers out to the ship and our guys worked around the clock to get the sand moved. We are proud of our staff and the relationships built with our customers, suppliers and business partners over many years.

Hidden in the heart of Echodale Industrial Park is New Zealand’s smallest microbrewery. Owner Dick Tout poured his first beer in the Lighthouse Brewery in 1996 and hasn’t looked back since, now producing a small quantity of great beer for locals and businesses all over the region. The boutique brewery produces only 200 litres at a time, which is the perfect amount for Dick, who only sells what he can’t drink himself. Over the years Lighthouse Brewery has won critical acclaim from both national and international beer tasters for its collection

including top notch pilsners, stout, Dicks Dark, Cheeky Little Lager and a seasonal Berry Cider.Lighthouse Brewery craft beer can be found in some of Nelson’s best, well known bars and restaurants or you are welcome to call into the brewery at 21 Echodale Pl to take a look around and buy onsite. Open Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday during business hours, and Tuesday and Saturday until 12.30pm.

Welcome to our June Newsletter,We are into the first month of winter and soon it will be the shortest day, so we can expect some cold days ahead but can also look forward to sun-ny days as well. Hope you all keep warm against the cold and keep away from ills and chills. At our meeting this month we discussed:The BMX track – we heard that there was more clay delivered and put on the track and that the safety rail has been completed and put up. There still needs to be some finishing work done and hopefully this will happen in the not too distant future. The village green – now that the TDC has pur-chased the land for our village green it is time to move on and decide how the community would like to see the development of this site. This is our one chance to have a say in what it will look like. To this end we will be giving you, the community an opportunity to let us know what you would like to see as part of the village green. We will put

a survey in your letterbox with some options and a place for you to add your ideas and suggestions so you can let us know what you would like. A couple of suggestions that have been put forward so far are the possibility of including a memorial for those who fought and died for our country, putting in some permanent seating so people can relax and enjoy a picnic or an ice-cream. We need to have this information for our August meeting – please watch out for this and let us know your thoughts. We would like to thank John for his work down at the village green and also Frank Trees who has been helping with advice as well. Finally we would like invite you to our next meeting which will also be our Annual Meeting. It will be on Tuesday July 2 at the Brightwater School staffroom, at 7pm followed by the usual monthly meeting. Everyone is welcome and we look forward to seeing you there.Your Community Association

Waimea Senior CareEighteen seniors from the district ventured out on a mystery trip, run by Nicola Berthelseen the Waimea Senior Care coordinator, in early

June. The first stop was morning tea at a local residence at St Arnaud which featured date scones that were to die for. No trip to the lake is complete without a visit to the lake shore, where everyone wanted to go out on the wharf and admire the eels. One 90 year old gentleman was heard to say to a 90 year old female, “Why don’t you jump in so I can be a hero and save you” - (and they talk about the antics of the younger generation). Then it was off for a late lunch at the Kohatu Tea rooms before returning tired but all with smiles. Nicola’s position is funded by the Brightwater and Wakefield Angli-can Churches to encourage and ad-vocate for, the seniors in the district. She runs regular activities, from ex-ercise classes through to lunches. If you want to know more email her on [email protected]

Pinegrove Kindergarten On Friday June 7, 30 children, 14 par-ents and four teachers hopped on the bus at 9am to travel to Nelson Gymnas-tics. We had a ball, running and jump-ing on the infamous blue mat, jumping into the sponge pit, walking along the highest balance beams and using our arms for swinging and climbing. This is always a popular annual event and has been kindly sponsored by the Fam-ily Liaison Group. We also went along to Appleby School, where we were kindly hosted by Mrs Pritchard and her classroom. Thank you to our parent helpers, be-cause without you, we would not have the legal ratios to be able to run these excursions and thank you to our won-derful children for listening so well to instructions, which keeps us all safe when we go outside of Kindergarten.Events coming up: Hangi at Brightwa-ter School on Monday June 17, ERO visit Wednesday June 19, Matariki cele-bration at Kindergarten Friday June 21Happy Māori New Year which began on Monday 10th June. From the Pinegrove Team

Brightwater PlaycentreWe had our annual quiz evening on Saturday June 8. It was a great night out and around $2600 was raised for our playcentre. $1,000 will go towards our shade sails and the rest we are

looking at purchasing some cool stuff for enhancing the children’s play.A huge thank you to all the businesses and individuals that generously donat-ed items towards the event. Also, to the families of our playcentre that contrib-uted time, effort and donations, and of course everyone who came along on the night - thankyou for supporting our wonderful centre.Recent trips have been to a Mini Mov-ers music session at the Hope Com-munity Church. Later on this month we are visiting Bunnings Warehouse to purchase some vegetable seedlings to plant in our centre garden. In July, we are visiting the Tasman Library for some storytelling by Lucy. Our last day for the term is Friday July 12 and we will be running an Open Day for anyone in the community who would like to come and check out what we are all about. There will be a bouncy castle, face painting, horse rides and our usual set up of 16 play areas. Our playcentre sessions run from Mon-day to Friday, 9.30am to 12pm, from newborn to 6 years. There are spaces available on every session. You can find us at 244 Lord Rutherford Road South, Brightwater or phone 542 3270.

Snowden’s Bush Native Bird RecoveryOver the summer months there were quite a few plants that perished due to the drought. Replanting is taking place

now it is cooler and site specific plants such as Totara and Manuka seedlings have been taking hold which is great to see. Many people don’t realise that Snowden’s Bush is one of the few low-land bush samples in our area. It’s al-ways great to see many people walking through the reserve. Regular setting of traps have been catching rats and mice however these have been tapering off which is positive news. Janice and Lyne Gibbs are always on the lookout for regular volunteers. You can reach them at [email protected] or phone 542 2009 if you are interested. Janice and Lyne are caretakers under DOC to help maintain and look after Snowden’s Bush with the Native Bird Recovery.

Buzz Club@BrightwaterThere is a new Buzz in the air on a Thursday after school. You may have heard of it, from the year 3 to year 6 school children living in the Brightwa-ter district. This is the children’s very own club held on a Thursday, from 3.30pm to 4.30 pm at the St Paul’s church hall, during term time. It is a place to hang out and have a lot of cool fun with games, activities and chal-lenges, not to mention the yummy af-ternoon tea and the music. The programme is designed to be en-gaging and uses story telling with a

Christian content, to help children explore and develop good values. For more info email [email protected]

Stoke ends Richmond’s winning run

Giants win crucial clash with NuggetsThe Fico Finance Nelson Giants have proven their playoff creden-tials by beating the NBL leading OceanaGold Nuggets 87-82 at the Trafalgar Centre on Saturday night. The win solidifies the Giants amongst the competitions top four and was the perfect way to bounce back after a shock loss to the HBS Bank Hawks a week earlier. “Any win where you’re playing the top team is important but this was a quality win against a quality team,” says coach Liam Flynn, reflecting on the signifi-cance of the result. “I think we can beat anyone. We’ve beaten Otago who are top, Wellington who are second.”Josh Pace led the scoring for the home side with 22 points while Mika Vukona had his strongest performance this season with 20 points, including a perfect record from the foul line.Neither side was able to grab a double-digit lead, and there

were times in the fourth quarter where it looked like the game could be destined for over-time or a buzzer-beater winner. That was until an important steal gave Erron Maxey a two point bonus after the Giants had scored just seconds prior, pushing the Gi-ants onto a 11-1 run with a seven point lead.Liam credited the partnership guards Josh Bloxham and Brooke Ruscoe have formed on the court, which has been one of the team’s major strengths this sea-son but has resulted in captain Phil Jones starting on the bench. “They both defend up the floor exceptionally well. We hang our hat on being a full court defen-sive, disruptive team and they’re one of the keys to that. Obvi-ously they’ve got a great friend-ship and have great chemistry.”

Otago’s Beny Anthony was the game’s top scorer with 24 points, converting three from four from beyond the arc. The Nuggets still remain on the top of the ladder, but are now only one game ahead of the Wellington Saints. Nelson are still third with nine wins and three losses but Liam says the side was just taking each game at a time. “We haven’t qualified for the finals yet and we’ve got some pretty big games coming up so we don’t get ahead of our-selves and we’ll keep working on things we need to get better at.” The Nelson Giants host the James Blond Super City Rangers at the Trafalgar Centre at 7pm this Sat-urday. Even with the Rangers lurking at the bottom of the table, Liam will continue to play a full strength line up and says each opposition deserves to be given respect. “We’re just focusing on game plan rather than who we play or anything like that.”

It was the top of the table clash on Saturday when the defending champions Stables Richmond Rabbits took on their rivals the Stoke Cobras at Lower Ngawhatu.Once again conditions were not ideal, set-ting up a mouth watering clash between two of the biggest forward packs of the competition. The Rabbits were without their influential fullback Cam Salton, who suffered a season ending ankle injury in last week’s win over the Wanderers Wolves.Traditionally slow starters, the Rabbits

leaked points early on when the Cobras runners sliced through a gap in the de-fence and crossed out wide.It didn’t take long for Richmond to hit back though, a slick long ball from half-back Eliot Smith to winger Kaiapa Paul had the Rabbits on the score sheet. The next 20 minutes were brutal with the sides trading some big hits and some en-tertaining football, worthy of the top of the table status. Tristan Laubscher continued his impressive form with some solid hit

ups and a busy tackle count. He had great support from tireless centre Callum Smith and prop forwards Jeremy Parata and Matt Mollo. A second try to Kaiapa Paul and in form hooker Sunny Morgan had the de-fending champions up 14-10 at half time.It looked as though another try could seal it for the Rabbits early in the second half, but it was the Cobras who would build pressure with some aggressive defence and scored early off some well executed back play. Another two tries to the Cobras and a

try to the Rabbits set up a grandstand fin-ish with scores locked at 18-18 with just minutes on the clock. From a short Rabbits kick-off the Cobras were able to creep their way into Rabbits territory, and with time almost up, the ball was put in Cobras hooker Freedom Walker’s hands who calmly slotted a 30m field goal, the ball eventually going over af-ter hitting the side post and cross bar. The Rabbits second loss of the season ends a nine game winning streak.

Miserable weather couldn’t stop the celebrations at Jubilee Park on Satur-day as Waimea Old Boys enjoyed wins aplenty on its annual club day.The day started with each of Waimea’s 18 JAB teams playing in Richmond be-fore the senior women’s team and the second division men’s team kicked off at 1.15pm.The defending champion women’s side hosted Blenheim-based Central and with both sides short of players the game was played with just 13-a-side. That meant there was more room for Waimea to attack and they quickly racked up try after try, eventually win-ning the game 130-0.The women’s players of the day were Stephanie Mitchell and Amanda Sim.Superliquor Richmond Waimea Old Boys division two didn’t have as much space with a determined Takaka side taking it to the hosts.Waimea had the opportunity to win the game in the dying min-utes but a strong charge by Kerry Walker was unsuccessful when he dropped the ball over the line.Waimea scored one try in the game to Sy Keelan and first five John Higgins kicked a penalty and conversion but lost 15-10.In the division one game Waimea hosted Marlborough side Awa-tere, which had defaulted due to lack of players but still turned up and – supplemented by players from the Waimea second division side – put up a good fight.Waimea won the game 43-17 with its backs too good once they got the ball in hand.Fullback James Lowe was again out-standing, scoring two tries and in-jecting himself at pace in the Waimea backline. The other try scorers were Ben Jeffery, Corey McClelland, Joe Higgins and Dale Russ. Josh Rutledge kicked five conversions and a penalty.

This week Waimea travel to Brightwa-ter to take on Wanderers in the semi final of the Tasman Trophy. The game kicks off at 3pm and the two clubs division two sides will fight it out in the curtain raiser, which kicks off at 1.15pm.Club president Duane Whiting says it was a “bloody awesome” day with huge support from the community.“It started with the JAB, the rain held off for them which was great. The rug-

by on the field was really good in the afternoon and later in the night it just carried on.”Duane says the support the club re-ceives from the community is a major reason for its success. “From sponsors and supporters right through to members of the public coming down to watch the games. The club has a great atmosphere about it and we thank everyone who came down.”

In the final games of the first round of Nelson Netball Grade 2 played at Saxton Courts on Saturday it came down to the wire. Garin College Hangar 58 went in to the last round at the top of the table and had their noses in front on 13 points – with three wins and a bonus point. Robbie’s Beer Cafe Richmond Black and Suburban Blue were nipping at Garin’s heels on 12 points each. Richmond had already completed their game to ac-count for Jacks Red 42-20. No doubt astute coach Deb Vincent being well aware of the need to hammer home as many goals as possible if the results of the other games were to go their way. Richmond would need a greater goal ratio to surpass Suburban, if Ga-rin were to loose.Garin have played some enterprising netball this sea-son, and on that form they would have gone into the game as favourites against the lower placed Nayland College team. However, matchup two college teams who have been playing against adults (and a different style of play) and anything can happen. Nayland came out firing, and literally knocked the wind out of Garin’s sails. A poor start cost Garin dearly and they were forced to play catch up netball for the remainder of the game. However, to their credit they did just that.A re-jigged attacking line up for Nayland paid divi-dends, and their shooters found their target while the defensive line up of Sara Reidie and young, Holly Chandler put Garin’s offensive third under enormous pressure.

While it was all Nayland in the first quarter (9-4) Garin re-gained their confidence and found another gear to surge back into contention with an impres-sive 7-8 second quarter.Wing attack, Poppy Restieaux displayed variation off the line and was a superb option at second phase while goal attack Sjaan Hunderford shouldered a hefty load through court. The air temperature dropped significantly at half time and the game almost become pedestrian, when unforced errors crept into the game by both teams.Garin claimed the third quarter 5-3 and the final period 4-3, however they came up short 20-23 and along with it the opportunity to gain promotion.Goal keep, Emma Greep came in for praise from her coach, Sarah Rankin. Emma had a great game, she hunted outside the circle where she pulled in a num-ber of lovely intercepts, she rebounded strongly and was very well disciplined on her lean. Abby Powick had her best game of the season, she was feisty on defence, a competent ball carrier and was constantly on hand at the transverse for the re-set.While Suburban Blue defeated Nelson Girls 36-22, they came up short on goal ratio and it was Rich-mond who gained promotion into Grade 1.This Saturday the new round begins and the draw sees a re-match between Garin and Nayland. Garin now need to pick themselves up and build on the last week’s game, knowing they finished well while Nay-land will be just as determined to prove last week was not a fluke! But that is college netball.
