Rabbi Cy’s Reflections It is hard to believe that Passover seems so re-cent. Our Seder at the temple was memorable and beautiful thanks to all the hard work the Seder Com-mittee did. But with Pesach receding into memory, we have continued the journey toward Sinai and on the fiftieth day after the Seder, we have arrived at Sinai ready to receive the Torah. Traditionally this included the Tikkun Leil Shavuot, an all-night Torah study session which takes a lot of coffee and a lot of stamina! Most people simply don't have the where-withal to be up all night learning. However, it would
not be Shavuot if there was no Torah study. On May 20 we will celebrate Shavuot (it is actually the second day of Shavu-ot) as we study a bit of Torah and remember our loved ones during Yis-kor. The Shavuot event will begin at 9:30 and should go for an hour or so. We will study something interesting about the giving of the Torah from our tradition and, in a way, stand at the foot of Sinai just as we did as a peo-ple in the desert those many years ago. Did you know that we have a Temple Beth Miriam YouTube channel? Have you seen it yet? If not, what are you waiting for! Rabbi Cy and I have uploaded all sorts of useful goodies for you and your family! Have you always wanted to learn the blessings be-fore and after the Torah reading? Do you need some extra practice at home on the special melodies for the High Holidays? Our B’nei Mitzvah students use the videos to learn and practice blessings and prayers, and you can too!
Check out the TBM channel here: https://www.youtube.com/user/rabbicy TBM also has a SoundCloud ac-count that features many of my original Jewish music composi-tions. If you would like to hear them, here is the link: https://soundcloud.com/cy-stanway. With Shalom, Cantor Marnie Camhi [email protected]
Rabbi Cy’s Reflections Continued…
Torah study is fundamental to understanding what Judaism is. This year, there were three Torah study classes: The-ology on Wednesdays, Torah study on Saturday mornings, and Talmud on Sunday morning (at 8 am!). All the classes were well attended and the learn and discussions in each one was lively and animated and joyous. Theology class used a new format of course videos divided into parts on the subject of 'God and Reform Judaism.' The classes were fascinating and the insights we gleaned from each other were wonderful. Torah study on Sunday mornings brought to life the Torah portion of the week and out little Saturday morning community comforted each other after the death of one of the participants. Thank God we were all there for each other - bound by Torah and our sense of com-munity. And Talmud continues to challenge and elevate us with critical thinking, lots of rabbinic thought and things you never thought were even important (for instance, when do you read the Megillah for Purim if Purim lands on Shabbat and does it matter if you are in a walled city or not....?) This has been a great year of learning. I would like to congratulate all my students for a wonderful year of allowing me to lead them in learning Torah. It was a wonderful year with my Teen Academy students, as well. Is there anything we didn't talk about? Was there any subject off-limits? If there was, I don't know about it! Your children, my students, have shown a level of maturi-ty and honesty and mutual respect that warms my heart. The credit goes to you, the parents of these children, to you the supporters of this temple and to all of you who have created this most healthy environment. Of course, any suc-cessful child had dedicated and committed teachers who have raised such wonderful disciples. We should all pat ourselves on the back! But even the best and most productive year must pass. And this one is almost over. As the summer begins after Sha-vuot, most of our classes will take a hiatus. But the classes will resume again in short order. It is nearing the time when we take time for our families and friends and enjoy the warmth and beauty of summer. But, the Torah and all its lessons will always be waiting for us when we recommit to learning it and, where there are students, the teacher will appear. I look forward to leading you in the coming months. And with the summer, OMG - as we say- are there events coming up! Don't neglect looking on the temple website at
www.bethmiriam.org and read your E-lijah. There are outdoor services, a murder mystery evening, breakfast with
the rabbi, messy games night, Shabbat Under the Stars and Southern Fried Shabbat - and those are just the ones I re-
member. It will be a delightfully busy summer and I hope you join me in celebrating our Judaism with worship and
fun!

In Case You Missed It
Last year, as part of its "Make the Omer Count" program the So-cial Action Committee of Temple Beth Miriam began sponsoring an annual performing arts event to raise money for a worthy charity. This year, the Committee's efforts were led by Michael Topper, 16, who organized the "Harmony Coffeehouse" on Sun-day, April 15. This event welcomed musicians from TBM and the surrounding communities to come together and raise money and awareness for the Asbury Park Music Foundation. Approximately 75 people attended and over $500 was raised. A great time was had by all who attended and performed. Topper led a steering team consisting of temple youth Maya Res-tifo, 14, and his younger brother, Elliot Topper, 14, as well as adult SAC members Chase Kaplan, Liza Restifo, Gayle Topper, and Michael Vernick. Together they invited performers, planned and publicized the event, coordinated space needs, arranged refresh-ments, liased with the APMF leadership, and worked the event. Performers included Luke Bonenfant, Matt Brown, Peter Nuss-baum, and Georgia Owen, Jacynth Apora, Anthony Campana, Rob Pasternak, and "Old Davy" Taylor. Cantor Marnie Camhi, Araiya Casriel, Chase Kaplan, Jacob Gerbman, Ryan Gerbman, Elliot Top-per, and Robert Topper.

The Sisterhood had a very successful paid up membership
afternoon tea program at The White House in Oakhurst,
attended by 25 members. They learned about the traditions
of the first ladies.

Adele Block, z”l
Adele Block, a long-time congregant, widow of Leonard and mother of Peggy and Tom, passed away on April
17, 2018 in New York City. She attended the University of Wisconsin and the University of Pennsylvania before
marrying Leonard Block in 1936 and moving to New York City. She considered herself a lifelong New Yorker.
She lived life to the fullest and contributed time and energy to make the city a better place for all who live
here.
She was involved in numerous communal and philanthropic activities. She served as president of the Wom-en’s Division of the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies and chair of the New York Service for the Handi-capped (Rising Tree Tops at Oakhurst). She was a founding board member of Lincoln Center Theater and served on the board of The Lighthouse. She was also a trustee of Elberon Library, near her summer home of over 70 years. In addition, she and Leonard donated the land upon which our present building is built and Beth Miriam is forever grateful for their profound generosity. Beth Miriam extends its deepest condolences to those close to her. She is survived by her children Peggy and Dick Danziger and Thomas Block and Marilyn Friedman; her grandchildren Katie Danziger and, Steve Horowitz, Betsy Danziger, Jonathan and Jennifer Block, Alison Block and Timothy Poore; and twelve great-grandchildren. May her memory be a blessing
