Daylight saving began at the start of October. Do you enjoy the extra hour of sunshine in the evening?

“I start in the morning so I don’t get it to see it.”

Rates remission policy still likelyA rates remission policy could still prevent some Richmond West resi-dents from paying skyrocketing rates after their land was rezoned to mixed business.Headingly Lane residents affected by the land rezoning met with Tasman District mayor Richard Kempthorne, other representatives from the Tas-man District Council and Quot-able Value on Thursday to discuss the options available. And it appears the residents’ first choice of a rates remission policy is not dead in the water, despite council recommend-ing a rates postponement policy. “It is

very easy to get into a standoff with the residents saying they only want remission,” says Richard. “The con-clusion is lets look at both options and see what we can come up with.” The TDC looked at a remissions pol-icy just a few months ago but decided not to pursue that option as it was not fair to other ratepayers. But it has now backtracked and will look at the policy again.Richard says the meeting enabled Quotable Value to answer questions on how the valuation process worked and the next steps would be discussed at a full council meeting this week.

Forget fishermen exaggerating the size of their catch, the region’s white-baiters hide theirs in the car so what they have caught remains a mystery – even to the Department of Conser-vation.A Brightwater man caught a whole seasons worth of whitebait in just six days and says he had the “best Sep-tember ever” during what has been a “phenomenal season”, just two months after DOC said whitebait was declining across the region.Trevor Timpson, who has been fishing for white-bait in Golden Bay for 15 years, has kept records during the past eight and believes whitebait are certainly not on a decline and he is not the only one with similar comments.Trevor says he does not know where DOC got its initial facts and figures from after catching 54.5 kilograms of whitebait in less than a week – up to 16kg more than he usually catches during 27 days. “They’re certainly not getting them from whitebaiters because whitebaiters lie through their teeth anyway,” says Trevor. “I’ve fished in the same spot on the same days every year and my tallies have never altered.”Trevor’s thoughts were echoed by another white-baiter, at Rough Island, who did not want to be named. The man, who has been whitebaiting for most of his life, says the current season is right up there with 2010. He went on to say that it was no surprise that DOC was under the wrong im-pression because “whitebaiters are the biggest

liars.” He knew of some whitebaiters that would hide whitebait in buckets in their cars so people would think there was nothing around and the river banks would remain unpopulated. The un-named man caught 11kg of whitebait on Thurs-day and word was quick to get around with 12 different whitebaiters lining the banks of Rough Island at high tide on Friday.Richmond’s Larry Sutherland says he hasn’t had as much luck as Trevor but noted that there have been some big catches being reported over the past two weeks. One of his friends had a season’s high catch of 18kg. “As far as Collingwood or Motueka go, numbers are well up and the Ap-pleby would be up on the average this year,” he says. “If you knew what everything thinks they know, then you’d be a millionaire but there are no millionaire whitebaiters I can tell you that.” There was also a report of a 31kg haul in the Mo-tueka River last month. The whitebait season closes on November 30.

A spike in robbery from cars has forced police to walk the streets and check car doors, knocking on the homes of owners who haven’t locked their vehicles.Over the past month Nelson Police have seen a rise in the number of robberies from vehicles, including in Richmond. But sen-ior sergeant John Price says the majority of those vehicles burgled were unlocked. “People seem to think they can leave their cars unlocked and they will be fine, unfor-

tunately they are not,” he says. Dozens of theft-from-vehicle incidents were recorded by police in the past month so John says police have taken to the street, checking cars parked on the road. “We check them and if they are unlocked we’ll knock on the door of the house its outside and tell the owner they should think about locking their car if they want to still have their possessions in the morn-ing.” When the policy was announced on the Nelson Police Facebook page last week

though, some were not happy with the idea. “Do I have the right to not lock my car door?” wrote Facebook user Richid Whiting. Another, Regan Woodford, posted: “What a waste of time. Why not do something productive with their time instead of wor-rying about people not locking doors. Idi-otic management.”Many of the comments were supportive of police efforts though with Richard Pol-lard responding to Richid’s post: “Sure you have Richid, just like you have the right

not to call the cops when it gets nicked. Or claim on insurance.”John says the idea will be beneficial if it gets people to lock their cars more often and rejected any notion that it was a waste of police time. “It’s about prevention, not attending crime. We are much better to spend our time try-ing to reduce opportunities for crime, that’s a lot more productive. The simple message is people need to care for their property, they shouldn’t leave anything of value in their vehicles and they should lock them.”

This Week WEDNESDAY 17 October 2012 5

Rubbish thrown from cars around Nelson has made up the majority of trash found on our shoreline during the past two Big Beach Clean Up’s and organisers don’t expect that to change this year. The Tasman Bay Big Beach Clean-up is to be held on November 10 and organisers are looking for more community groups to claim a stretch of shoreline in Nelson or Tasman and clean it up. The first clean-up netted more than 10 tonnes, with more than six tonnes collected last year by hun-dreds of volunteers over the 295

kilometres of shore from Cable Bay to Golden Bay.Coordinator for the clean-up, Jan-ice Gravett from the Department of Conservation, says the most af-fected areas are in the inner haven near Atawhai, the Nelson marina and other coastline near roads. She says plastic bottles and other rubbish make up the lion’s share of litter. The clean-up – a joint intuitive be-tween DOC, Nelson City Council, Tasman District Council and Nel-mac – is primarily to protect sea life that may become tangled in plastic

or eat something they shouldn’t. A secondary benefit, says Janice, is making the region the country’s cleanest shoreline as no other re-gion does a similar clean-up.Janice says the call is now going out for community groups to sign up to clean one of 50 sections of beaches. Around half those coastal sections have already been taken up by groups who took part in previous beach clean-ups. Groups can find out more about the beach clean-up and register to take part on the DOC website www.doc.govt.nz.

Car thrown rubbish is the worst

The Tasman Bay Big Beach Clean-Up is being held next month and organisers says most rubbish comes from cars.

BRIEFinnewsSECOND ENTRANCE TO OPEN: Motorists driving north will have easier access to Sax-ton Field in two week’s time when a second entrance is officially completed. The new entrance will allow better traffic flow into, through and out of Saxton Field. At peak times on a Saturday, Saxton Field can be-come an extremely busy facility. By open-ing another entrance, it is hoped all users will benefit during those busy periods. The cost of the new entrance is $850,000 and is joint funding by both councils.

TASMAN’S GOT TALENT: The search is on for the terrifically talented as a new show tours the Tasman District. Heats will be held in Golden Bay, Motueka and Rich-mond in late October and early November. The competition is to be split into four cat-egories - junior and senior solo sections, a duo section and a group section. Winning performances in each category at each heat will be recorded and shared online, for the online community to cast their vote on who they think should be crowned the inaugu-ral TGT champion. The overall champion will walk away with the grand prize of an Apple iPad 2, with a load of Richmond Mall vouchers also up for grabs for contestants who place in their heats.

RELAY TEAM FINISH THIRD: Last week we incorrectly stated that the junior women’s road relay team finished fourth place at the national championship. The team actually finished third place, picking up a bronze medal for their efforts and we congratulate them for their efforts. The team, which won the grade the previous year, included Brit-tany Stewart, Jess Martin, Claire Erasmus, Sami Jordan and Michelle Schurmann. They finished the 39.49km course in a time of three hours, one minute and 41 seconds.

BUILDING LEVY MEETING: Tasman Dis-trict Council will discuss the future of the Building Consent Levies at a full council meeting on Thursday. The change to the levies was first reported by Waimea Weekly and has raised concerns by the building and real estate industry labelling the changes as “unfair”. Councillors asked staff to produce a report on the changes for tomorrow’s meeting.

NEW PATIENTS WELCOME

If you missed out last time, get ready for a week-end of swinging and grooving with The Flaming Mudcats this weekend. The Auckland band will perform at the Play House this weekend and are set to bring their special blend of blues and funk back to Nelson for what they “guarantee to be an exhilarating weekend of blues bliss.”Bassist Sean McCarthy says they are excited to join forces with special guests and local Nelson band Boogie Train. “There wasn’t much blues to be heard when I lived in Nelson a few years back in the mid 90s, it’s great to see bands like Boogie Train down here performing and taking it to the people.”The Flaming Mudcats performed to an enthu-siastic crowd at the 2011 Nelson Jazz and Blues Festival, and are pleased to return to the Nelson region says Sean. The band will be performing hits from their debut album ‘Gave You What You Wanted’, and will also per-form new work from their upcom-ing album which is due for release later this year. After touring the South Pacific and New Zealand last year, the band earned rave reviews

with a recent write up on muzic.net.nz dubbing the band “up there with some of the late greats of 1950’s American Blues” and are self described as “equally at home in down-home shuffles, New Orleans funk, spacious minor blues, west coast swing, pounding four-on-the-floor and rollick-ing Texas shuffles”.Sean says the band “shares a deep passion for blues music in all its forms” and stands out from the crowd with its “massive range of influences, and the sheer virtuosity of the musicians.”The Flaming Mudcats are giving away four tick-ets to their show and have CDs up for grabs to readers of the Waimea Weekly and Nelson Week-ly.To be in the draw to win email editorial@waime aweekly.co.nz

Sean McCarthy, Ian Thomson, Craig Bracken and Doug Bygrave, will hold nothing back when they bring the blues to Nelson this weekend.

Top jazz band returnsPolice across Tasman District are targeting cannabis growing and need the public’s help.Detective Sergeant Brett Greer says police were out gathering intelli-gence on growers and had already stymied one grower’s plans in Mar-lborough. Brett says police were asking rural property owners and those who were out tramping, hunting or fish-ing to keep an eye out and report any suspicious activity. “We know the growers are now heading out to get their crops established so we’re asking for the public to assist by let-ting us know if they see anything.“If there are vehicles parked in re-mote locations, or you see people heading out with garden imple-

ments, take down the details and let us know.Brett says a lot of the police success in tracking drug growers stemmed from information coming from members of the community. “Peo-ple who live in rural areas know who should be hanging around and who looks a bit out of place. We know from past experience that the types of people out putting in can-nabis plots will have no qualms tak-ing a sift through your farm sheds as well.“You don’t want your neighbour-hood to be the preferred growing location, so don’t make it easy for these people.” People with information can con-tact the police on 546 3840.

Bridget Budget answers your questions

Q: My friend suggested I get a boarder, because I am struggling to pay my rent and bills as a single parent. Is it a good idea or will it cost me more?

A: If you have a room available, a boarder can better your financial situation, because they will share the costs of rental, power, food, phone and water. You can have two boarders paying less than $247 per week each, without their income affecting your benefit, tax or family assistance.

Sponsored by New Zealand Lotteries

We offer free, confidential advice for everyone.

Get your landlords approval Check out your boarders references to ensure

they will be safe with your children Work out a reasonable rate for room, power,

water, internet, phone and food. I suggest between $160 and $220 per week

Write up an agreement between you and your boarder. Check the tenancy tribunal website: http://www.dbh.govt.nz/tenancy-tribunal for a copy of a flat/house sharing agreement. Include cost of board, frequency of payment (weekly or fortnightly), bond required, what they will getfor their money

The upgraded Tasman District Council building was unveiled on Thursday morning, with a blessing from council kaumatua Archdeacon Andy Joseph.TDC staff gathered with mayor Richard Kempthorne to witness the blessing and walk through their new premises. The new building is part of a $2.75 million plan to renovate the Richmond offices, and means council staff can all be under one roof and continue plans to renovate the rest of the building up to earthquake standard. The development was about having a proper place for the council to serve the public says Richard, with

employees that have been working offsite now able to be in the building.Richard says they will now get on with earthquake proofing the older parts which has been an issue for council. An overhaul and improvement of the entrance area is now underway and will be well received by staff and the public says customer service manager Su-zanne Westley.“It’s friendlier, more open and will provide a bright and cheerful welcome.”Property development manager Jim Frater says the building plans “are on track with the budget” and they hope to see the rest of the work completed by Christmas.

Clay Andrews, 9, rides a crazy bike at the Sport Tasman Wheelie Fun Day last week. The Wheelie Fun day was attended by hundreds of kids who got their first opportunity to be part of the Konica Minolta Nelson Cycle Festival. The Wheelie Fun day was not restricted to bi-cycles with some children bringing scooters and skateboards while there were also segways and blokarts available for use.

Staff from the Car Company were joined by two Makos and volunteers from Nel-son Women’s and Children’s Refuge last week in raising more than $1000 for the non-profit organisation and tomorrow they will be in Richmond.During the month of October the Car Company is doing everything it can to raise money and profile for the women’s refuge and the work it does in the Nel-son community. That pledge went to the streets last week as staff rounded up a couple of Tasman Makos and took to the streets with buckets. Organiser Tracey Black says she was “astounded” with the response. “The people of Nel-son just blew me away. I couldn’t believe how giving they were. One lady said to me that she’d gladly donate because she wished the women’s refuge had been around for her mum.”The Car Company has also organised a quiz night, other street collections

including on Queen St this Thursday. They are also giving $50 from each car they sell in the month to the women’s refuge, an expected $5000 in total. It has also roped in other companies to join in with the Money Company and Protecta insurance each chipping in $20 each for each car insurance sold through the Car Company during the month. Tracey says the Car Company is known

for its support of sport but wanted to show it does much more in the com-munity than just sport sponsorship.“We are passionate about sport but for a long time Shane [Drummond, Car Company owner] has also supported all of these other groups and doesn’t really tell any-

one about it. So we wanted to work with one organisation and really make a dif-ference for them. The women’s refuge operates on a shoestring budget and be-ing ex-police I’ve seen first-hand what they do and I really think, sadly, it’s an organisation that works with so many in our community and in every suburb pretty much.”She says Vernon Fredericks and Bryce Heem from the Tasman Makos were fantastic and even went into shops to seek donations. “We were blown away by how great they were, we even had shop managers tell us that.”Trudie Brand from the Nelson Women’s and Children’s Refuge Service says the support from the Car Company is fan-tastic. “I was pretty gobsmacked actu-ally when I heard the total raised. It is awesome that people were so generous and that the Car Company has got be-hind us.”

Readers push for Weekly puzzlesThis week we’ve launched a new feature to our newspaper – puzzles. In the past few years we at the Waimea Weekly have fielded dozens of requests for a crossword and sudoku and while we’re far too busy for such fun we’ve yielded to reader de-mand and included a new puzzle section (on page 26). We understand that most of you like to take your time read-ing Waimea Weekly and that you see the time reading us as quality time. So we think the addition of a crossword and su-doku will enhance that experience.

We would also like your feedback on our puzzles. Do you like them, would you prefer another puzzle and what you would change? Adding these puzzles to your local newspaper is about reacting to reader demand so we want to make sure you actually like them. Don’t blame us if you can’t finish them though. It is intended that there will be a quick crossword each week and sudokus will rotate from easy, medium and hard every three weeks. Any feedback would be appreciated and can be sent to [email protected]. Thanks, good luck and have fun. - Editor.

The school holidays have been fantastic at Fashion Island but now we return to normal and look forward to Christmas which will be here in just 10 weeks! In the heart of Fashion Island you will find Columbus Café, owned by Trudi and Ian Brassfield. I feel very lucky to have Columbus at Fashion Island. And it’s even better in the summer months, like a big summer house with its doors and windows open as there is the choice to sit indoors or outside and soak up the sun. Columbus has a wonderful selection of savoury and sweet options like paninis, wraps, quiches, pastries, cakes and slices enticing you from the glass display unit or choose from the menu for the kitchen to prepare. What a perfect way to relax and unwind after a shop at Fashion Island. At Columbus Café, they ensure that the coffees are always freshly roasted, freshly ground and freshly brewed, and you can ensure that you will be served by experienced, friendly and knowledgeable staff who enjoy sharing the enjoyment of great coffee and food in a relaxing environment. So have a fantastic week, and I look forward to seeing you at our Fashion Island.

Hey, thanks for reading

Coupland’s Bakeries has relocated into the heart of Richmond and store manager Jolene Preston says the decision to move is already paying off.Coupland’s had been based at its previous site off Salisbury Rd for around ten years, but Jolene admits it was more of a destina-tion store and is confident that the new lo-cation almost behind the Police Station on Queen St is a smart move to continue the growth of the brand. “Before, people had to make a special trip to see us. Our new location on Queen St means that people can visit us easily without having to travel out of their way. With heaps of car parking too, it really is the best of both worlds in

terms of convenience for our customers. We do have a lot of loyal customers that will track us down no matter what and it’s great to see them still coming in, alongside new regulars coming in off Queen St to grab their lunch,” she says. The rise in lunch trade has also seen a boost in catering facilities, with savouries, sandwiches, cakes and other sweet treats a popular choice for work shouts and par-ties. “Even at late notice we can do catering and it’s great to see word getting around nearby offices about the range of tasty op-tions we can provide.”The annual Christmas stock was also about to be released. Favourites such as tarts,

truffles and Christmas cakes will soon be available on the shelves alongside a great new range of gift tins and hampers. Jolene says the store remains true to its motto of being the “home of good baking”, but that Coupland’s now offer a huge range of delicious food, the variety of which of-ten surprised people. With a delicious new 100 per cent Yum premium slice range recently released (in flavours like Zesty Citrus, Gooey Caramel and Dreamy Coconut)and a selection of freshly baked specialty breads also now available it’s clear that Coupland’s has been busy making sure they continue to exceed cus-

tomers’ expectations. “People come to us because our food tastes great, is fantastic value and staff go the extra mile to make sure our customers are well looked after.”The new building is situated in the old Flooring First/ First National Real Estate-complex, with access from the Richmond Mall car park or off the street beside the police station. Coupland’s has its own 16 dedicated car parks.

Pulling into a Sydney airport car park last week Wakefield’s Bruce Monro thought his weekend’s Bathurst motor racing adventure was over. But then he noticed the bloke in the car next to him looked rather like the race car champion that had won the Great Race less than 24 hours earlier.“I got as close as I could during the prize giving ceremony at Bathurst,” says Bruce. “I never thought a few hours later I’d be shaking his hand and holding the damn thing. It was just magic. The whole weekend was magic.”Bruce, who works at Mc-Naughton’s Furniture, and his wife Sandra attended the 30th Bathurst 1000 in 1992 and he says he’d spo-ken for years about going back for the 50th edition of the V8 Supercar race, dubbed the Great Race.He says there was a pretty big difference between this year and last time he went.“They are so much faster, so much nosier, a much larger crowd. But the atmosphere is still the same and the rivalry is still the same.”Bruce – who once owned a rally car and has helped with local races for years – wasn’t cheering for either Holden or Ford, he was hoping the Kiwi drivers would do well, no matter what car they drove. Unfortunately the Kiwi drivers failed to fire and Australian’s

Jamie Whincup and Paul Dumbrell won the race. The Monros left Bathurst early the day after the race to avoid the crowds and made their way to the wrong airport termi-nal, which Bruce blames on Sandra’s map reading. As he entered the car park of the domestic terminal Bruce says he had a red Holden “right up my chuff ”. He pulled over

the side and was told he couldn’t park there and to follow the red Holden. He did and parked next to it when out hopped a group of men all wearing Hold-en and Vodafone printed shirts, one of them being Jamie Whincup. “They opened up their boot and out comes the trophy and all their bags. I couldn’t believe it, I said congratulations and asked for a photo. He shook my hand said thanks very much and handed me the trophy to hold while he got his bag out of the boot. I mean this is the

Peter Brock Memorial Trophy, it was just staggering to see it up that close. “I’ll never say ‘Sandra you’re a useless map reader’ ever again,” he jokes. The excitement didn’t end there though, as they were board-ing their plane the all-conquering All Blacks hopped on their plane and the passengers cheered them for their South Afri-can win on Sunday morning. Not that Bruce really cared too much about that. “I didn’t even know if they won or not so I didn’t really worry about the All Blacks, I was still buzzing from meeting Jamie.”

The daily grind of cooking on a budget doesn’t have to be a strain on you and your family says Karen Bidmead. Karen and her husband David will teach the Richmond com-munity how to cook healthy and creative meals during a course that they say will open the eyes of families who struggle to put something on the table at night that pleases everyone, and comes in under budget.Karen says the idea behind the cooking classes comes from wanting to educate the wider community who may not have the knowl-edge to feed the family on a budget, and says the

course is really helpful to those who need educating on how to use fresh ingredients in an af-fordable way.The program is open to anyone from the community and those that attend will learn to cook cheap yet nutritious meals for their families out of the day to day contents of their pantry, and is so doable that Karen says they struggle to fit it all in dur-ing the short course.“We can show people so many options on how to cook meals at home for less.”Karen says participants of the

five week program will walk away feeling inspired to prepare fun and tasty meals for their families.“People are really surprised at what you can do, people don’t believe us when we say you can make these amazing meals and stay on a good budget.”The ‘Let’s get cooking’ classes will be held in the commer-cial kitchen at the Richmond Church of Christ and costs $5 a class.Cooking will begin on Mondays from 10.30am till 1pm begin-ning on the October 29.

We have moved Just up the road actually to our new home in the Richmond mall. We look forward to seeing you there.

Westpac Richmond Mall, 216 Queen Street. Phone: 03 543 9267

For most people Labour Day is just anoth-er holiday, but how many of us are aware of the origin of Labour Day which was first officially celebrated in New Zealand in October 1900, following the early efforts in 1840 of Samuel Parnell to promote an ‘eight-hour working day.’ The slogan, ‘Eight hours work, eight hours recreation, eight hours rest’ was first coined in 1817 by social reformers during the Industrial Revolution in Britain when workers had to endure long hours and poor working conditions. New Zealand was in fact the first country in the world to adopt the eight-hour working day.The whole topic of work and employment

is hugely challenging and controversial as we face issues of work stress, job opportunities, ‘starting out wage’, increasing unemploy-ment, job losses and redundan-cies.It is a sad fact that apart from those who can’t find work, many feel imprisoned in work that they hate, or work in jobs that give no satisfaction or are demanding and stressful. Some see work as a curse, while others like Mark Twain saw ‘work as a necessary evil to be avoided.’ Famous inventor Thomas Edison saw

work as fun and despite the fact that he worked eighteen hours a day he said: “I never did a day’s work in my life!”I have discovered that the key to finding true job satisfaction is having a biblical understanding of work. God himself establishes right from the very beginning the principle of a healthy balance between work and rest. He

gives great wisdom and shows how work can be hugely fulfill-ing and rewarding.

Solomon, considered to be one of the wis-

est men on earth concluded that without knowing God, life is meaningless, wealth doesn’t satisfy and work is futile! Jesus spoke often on the importance of using our talents, checking our motives as well as on how to find rest in times of difficulty and stress. He said: “Come to me all you who labour and are heavy-laden and I will give you rest.” In conclusion when you are using your gifts and strengths and when what you do is useful, then you will discover that work is no longer work, it is an antidote to bore-dom, it is enjoyable and is an expression of who you are. That’s something worth thinking about.

Just a thought - Labour Day isn’t just another holiday

A big thank you to Club Waimea,The New Zealand Historical Postcard Society Inc had a fan-tastic venue experience for their Annual Convention Week-end at Club Waimea on 6 and 7 October 2012.We cannot say enough about the support from the admin-istration and management team at Club Waimea, from our tentative first inquiries to booking our event.Such professionalism, no details missed, nothing was a both-er as we needed to keep in touch numerous times as situa-tions developed or changed.Club Waimea were able to provide a cost effective, top class, centrally located venue with that all important plenty of

parking, which more than met all we could wish for.The extra bonus of a café/restaurant on site, was just supreme and the service from both was so enjoyable, and the awesome food was just the best. There was no bother for our evening buffet meal, where special dietary requirements were required for some of our members. We had not one complaint about any aspect of the weekend catering or the venue from any of those attending, now that does say it all! Congratulations also to the Club Waimea members who featured as part of this event: Kelvin Trower with “Life in a shoe box”, and Doug South with “Mur-chison and surrounding environs.”

Welcome to our October Newsletter,Here we are into another new month – the weeks just seem to go by so quickly. The weather is still being very unpredictable but at least we are having some sunny days – more than we were getting before. We hope the school holidays have given you the chance for some fun and relaxation

with the family; it’s nice to have a break in the routine.Have you noticed that the signage for the Lord Rutherford Sports Field has finally been put up? It makes this area easier for everyone to find now, our thanks to the Tasman District Council. You will all be aware that the next part of the Cycle Trail between Brightwater and Wakefield is under construction. It was brought to our notice that some people travelling along the new cycle trail from

Wakefield were crossing the main highway instead of going through the underpass and into our Village that way – the un-derpass provides a much safer option. We have been in touch with Dougald Ley at TDC and he has informed us that signage informing cycle users about the underpass is due to be put up in the next couple of

weeks. We certainly do not want any accidents for any of the cy-clists, so please be safe everyone. We want to thank Sally who is busy organising the hanging baskets for the coming summer. This year she will have help from the Garden Club at Brightwater School in pre-paring these. It’s lovely to have the colours on show at the shops dur-ing the summer. The village green is looking lovely and tidy at the moment and the two new trees donated and put in by Franks Trees are coming out in bloom. We hope to get some picnic tables to put in down there so you can sit and enjoy an ice cream on a sunny day or even your fish and chips. Hopefully there will be an announcement in this months’ On the Brightside.

Our next meeting is on 6 November 2012, at Brightwater School at 7.30pm. Come along and have a say, we would love to see

you there.Your Community Association

My First Visit To Rainbow Ski Area‘Weee’……. What a crack-ing experience skiing down a cold snowy slope, like sit-ting on a bicycle going down the road! Suddenly, when I reach the bottom, an icy blizzard like ‘thing’ rocketed into my face and blacked out my sense of vision. These same sort of things hap-pened quite a few times on the snowy slopes of Rainbow Ski Field. This is my experience of heading to Rainbow Ski Area. Skiing on that day was so great because it was snow-ing, and the mountain air was chilly, while the sun was trying to shine brightly behind the clouds of evapo-rated water. I was so excited I couldn’t hold it in any long-

er. Just going constantly up and down, up and down on the beginners slope was fun. While I was there, running about, were a whole bunch of green and orange friendly keas. Eventually after five whole hours of fun skiing, we had to go home. We travelled off the mountain by two big shuttle buses. On the way back out of Rainbow we counted Fords (Fords are concrete slabs that you drive over to make it easier to cross a small river). We remembered that they were in this order on the way down: Woolshed, Rough, Chinaman, No Catchum and Mer-ry. Going to Rainbow Ski Field was an awe-some experience! I can’t wait to go again…..Zane de JouxRoom: 11, Brightwater School

Ready to play ballThe Stoke Eagles will look to fly high at the NBS Labour Weekend Men’s Fastpitch Open while the competition’s only other home-town softball team will have different objectives as it looks to upset its neighbours in the opening fixture. The tournament kicks off on Friday evening with the Eagles and the United Titans set to clash in the first round robin game. The fastpitch tourna-ment has been hosted by the Eagles for the past three years and draws a number of the country’s top clubs to Saxton Ballpark. There are expected to be around 15 current Black Sox playing over the four days.Nelson Softball chief executive Derryn French, who is also in the Eagles’ squad, says his youth-ful side should hold its own against teams fea-turing some New Zealand representatives. He was targeting five wins as a gauge of success. “We’ve got a very young side and I expect in some instances we will struggle while in oth-ers we should do pretty well,” he says. “A lot of it comes down to the pitching and how Brandon Peck, who is in from Vancouver, will go. If he steps up and starts to dominate then certainly we will be in the mix.”The Titans are a little more “unknown,” accord-ing to Derryn. “Part of their agenda will be the fact they are competing and they’re getting

amongst it.” Jeremy McIlroy and Giuseppe La-grutta add some quality to the squad and if the team’s pitching can be consistent they should not be taken lightly. The all-Nelson clash is currently scheduled for 5:30pm on Friday night. The travelling teams will begin their campaigns on Saturday morn-ing.Poneke Kilbernie will be one of the favourites to take the top honours, having been in the top four of the New Zealand club national champi-onship in as many years. PK have five Black Sox in its roster.Parklands Christchurch United will have Regan Manly on the mound, strong hitter Gareth Cook and Daniel Milne – all three are part of the New Zealand set-up.Sunday night will also feature a home run derby where two players from each team will slog it out. That is scheduled for 5pm.Derryn is hoping to entice local softball fans to check out what is the top annual tournament to hit the town. “The calibre you’re going to see is definitely up there and it’s a pretty good tourna-ment.” The final will be held on Monday at 2pm.Nelson Softball was also able to confirm that it would be hosting a Black Sox internal tour on November 14 and 15, prior to the world cham-pionship in Auckland in March.

In her 50s, after decades of smoking and with two hip replacements Robyn Scherer doesn’t have the kind of credentials you would expect for a gym junkie, but she reckons she doesn’t use a normal gym.The office worker says she was in trouble, her health was poor and mobility in between hip operations was tough going, but Robyn’s found her ticket to good health and says it comes in a piece of equipment that is only found in one other place in all of Australasia. TRX sounds like a spaceship or a dinosaur more than the jungle gym Robyn describes, but the mix of boxing and working the suspension system where you use your own body weight to do a range of exercises, and keeping a good diet, has worked wonders for her. “I’m relatively young to have both hips replaced but I had severe arthritis and I was given the opportunity to have the operations fairly quickly via the Public Health system. After the first operation, and then the sudden death of both my mother and father, I made the big decision to change my lifestyle and joined the gym. I also gave up smoking after the second hip operation – after 40 years of being a pack a day smoker.”Not only did she join the gym but Robyn took on a personal trainer, Jason Hulena. After three years working out with Jason, she says she is fit-ter, more mobile and healthier than she’s ever

been. She is currently doing the Fat Attack Chal-lenge at the Wairua Body Coaching Systems, which is a mix of boxing and working out on a TRX. Jason and his brother-in-law Greg set up Wairua about 8 months ago and they have just installed the Synrgy System. It’s one of only two of its kind in Australasia and Greg says he and Jason are excited about the equipment and the results they are getting. “We get people from all backgrounds, all shapes, all sizes and everyone can use it. It’s a great workout.”Robyn certainly agrees. “It’s the best thing I’ve ever done. I feel fitter than I ever have.”

Unfortunately the weather for this last week or so has been typical for this time of year with a lot of wind and rain, but fortunately there have been a few fine opportunities to sneak out and land some fish. Boat-ing will be somewhat hazardous with a lot of floating debris, so take extra care especially form partially submerged objects. Fishing in Tas-man Bay was beginning to show some early snapper being caught but the subsequent rain and dirty water has cooled the water tem-perature and has delayed the arrival of good numbers of spring snapper. It would seem though that the car-pet sharks don’t mind these condi-tions as one angler found out last week, with his setline producing an excellent hook up rate. Those who fish the Kenepuru this time of year will also find the snapper somewhat elusive, as the rather large seven gill sharks invade the sound in plague like numbers and cause havoc. Ap-parently over the last few days or so a fisher reported they only caught one snapper for lots of hours on the water, which possibly means that with all the fresh dirty water it may also be a few weeks before the Kenepuru starts to improve. The DBFC kayaking fraternity have also been enjoying some excellent fish-ing in Delaware Bay, landing some fine gurnard, small brim and kaha-wai. We have included some tips on where, when and how to target ka-hawai. The DBFC has several boat based trips coming up in the very near future. If you are thinking of joining the club, now is the time. These opportunities enable you to fish alongside and learn from very experienced club members. Be-

cause we keep in regular contact with each other during the day’s fishing, you will not be left wonder-ing where the fish are biting and what the flavour of the day is. Be-tween us we cover a lot of ground and we do find the fish.Areas: Can be caught almost any-where around Nelson and Marlbor-ough. Targeting: During October large schools can be found feeding on whitebait close to river mouths and along the Boulder Bank and inner harbour. Fish early morning or later

in the day to produce best results but can be caught all day long. Sur-fcasting at Tahuna beach can pro-duce some excellent fish.Equipment: Light spinning gear with small metal lures like a trout silver toby make ideal kahawai catchers. Find a work up and cast along the edges of it and retrieve the lure as fast as possible. Flasher rigs with small baits work well. Any red and green colours do well.Tips: Bleed your fish as soon as you catch it by cutting its throat and a cut across the tail works as well. Get it on the ice and smoke it when at home, enjoy.

Waimea riders win big at season openerThere were no signs of winter cobwebs as a 70-strong group of local show jumpers took to Marchwood Park in Motueka with plenty of speed, style and accuracy on Sunday.Participation-wise, this was the largest open-ing competition in a number of years for the Nelson Area Show Jumping Group with num-bers high in all 17 classes. Classes were spread between horses and ponies and then separat-ed by the height of the obstacles. The best of the local registered riders were youngster Emily Hamer of Hope in the reg-istered pony classes riding She’s Spot On and Moonwalker the Grey; Pamela Milliken of Brightwater largely dominated the show hunter classes on Z Final Straw and Viking SL, placing in each class she competed in; Danielle Guiver performed well and earned herself a second placing on My Sassy Cat in

the 115-120cm class; Lynley Wilson riding Zec Tac Indian Brave got second in the speed class and won her 110cm class and Helen Palmer of Tapawera placed in most classes riding a total of four horses.Nelson Area Show Jumping Ground spokes-person Linda Cotton, who also won two classes on Sunday, says she was stoked with the turnout, with competition running until 6pm to cater for the large amount of entries. “There are heaps of good riders in Nelson but yesterday they all came out of the woodwork,” she says. “Six o’clock is probably too long but we just had such good numbers.”The next local show jumping event will not be held until February 2 so riders will venture out of town for South Island competitions, while also being active at the Nelson A&P Show.

Junior footballers taste successThe Nelson Royal 10th grade football team are the South Island champions with three other lo-cal teams making finals on the weekend. The results capped off another successful tour-nament held at Saxton Field with more than 450 young footballers taking part. Nelson hosted the 10th grade and 11th grade tournaments with the 12th grade competition being held in Blenheim. The 11th grade tournament, which is known

as the Jack McKnight Tournament, featured 17 teams from across the island. The Nelson Royal team beat Nelson White in the 10th grade final; before a heartbreaking pen-alty shootout defeat saw the Nelson Royal 11th grade team lose its final against Canterbury, having tied 1-1 at full time. The Nelson Royal 12th grade team also made a South Island final, losing 4-1 to Canterbury Red in Blenheim.
