Born in Minnesota, lived in Buffalo and Syracuse. Attended elite Catholic schools before going to Princeton. Neglected his studies to write and dropped out of school to join the army in 1917. Married Zelda Sayre of Alabama in 1920. One daughter, Frances Scott (called Scottie.)
