Lessons learnt – 1
• Leguminous tree crops Negligible fertilisers Higher profit margins!
23/08/2010 Sustainable Transformations Pvt. Ltd41/1, 4th Cross, Malleswaram
Bangalore 560003

Lessons learnt – 2
• Trees Juvenile phase + cross pollination Graft for all commercial plantations to avoid this!
23/08/2010 Sustainable Transformations Pvt. Ltd41/1, 4th Cross, Malleswaram
Bangalore 560003
17 of 24
Lessons learnt – 3
• Canopy management:
– Make sure all available land area has leaf cover by the time plantation matures
– Plan plant-spacing accordingly
– Seed output heavily dependent on canopy area that sees the sun

Bangalore 560003
18 of 24
Lessons learnt – 4
• No input means no output• Too much input is just a waste of
resources!
– Calculate how much the plant species needs & what rate it can absorb it at
– Anything less means less seeds– Anything more it will waste

Lessons learnt – 5Stay Local
• As far as possible, select a species that belongs to the area– Good varieties are easier to find– Farmers are more comfortable with it– Yields are maximum
• e.g. – semi-arid areas – Castor, Pongamia– Coast – Coconut, Palm, Jatropha / Pongamia

With engines and expellers:
The bigger the better!!!
• Efficiency improves drastically with higher capacities– 5 kW engine < 2 kWh/lt– 1 MW engine > 4 kWh/lt

Lessons learnt – 7
• Almost all engines are biofuel ready with very small modifications for the smaller, higher speed engines!

Additional case studies!
• Rudolf Diesel built the diesel engine to run on groundnut oil!
• Ford had a factory that made car bodies out of hemp fibres & ran the cars on ethanol from hemp
• Chinese ran their battle tanks on hemp oil!• Advantage over other renewable energy
technologies – over 100 years of R&D has already gone into diesel engines
