SERVICE FOR THE LORD’S DAY
THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
June 30, 2019
* = Those who are able, please stand.
Congregation responds in bold.
Song of the Brightness of Water by Karol Wojtyla
From the depth—I came only to draw water
in a jug—so long ago, this brightness
still clings to my eyes—the perception I found,
and so much empty space, my own,
reflected in the well.
Yet it is good. I can never take all of you
into me. Stay then as mirror in the well.
Leaves and flowers remain, and each astonished gaze
brings them down
to my eyes transfixed more by light
than by sorrow.

The hour is coming and now is here.
Let us worship God in spirit and in truth.
* HYMN NO. 410 God is Calling through the Whisper
W. ZOLBIE LEZY
* PRAYER OF CONFESSION Ruth Chadwick Moore
Almighty and merciful Lord, you know who we are and you
know everything we have done.
We thirst for things that will never satisfy us.
We commit ourselves to things that will never last.
We worship things that will never bring salvation.
Still, you offer us the gift of living water.
You offer us the gift of eternal life.
Forgive us, O Lord, and give us this living water,
so that we may never thirst again.
* SILENCE FOR PERSONAL PRAYER AND
REFLECTION
* DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS
Friends, this is the good news of God’s grace:
Though we were sinners, Christ died for us.
Though we were enemies of God, God loved us.
Once we were lost and dead –
Now Christ has become our life and salvation.
In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven!
Thanks be to God.

SOLO I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say John Dykes
arr. Ron Harris
John Wright, Baritone
I heard the voice of Jesus say, “Come unto Me and rest;
Lay down, thou weary one lay down thy head upon My breast.”
I came to Jesus as I was, weary and worn and sad.
I found in Him a resting place and He has made me glad.
I heard the voice of Jesus say, “I am this dark world’s Light;
Look unto Me, thy morn shall rise, and all thy day be bright.”
I looked to Jesus and I found in Him my Star, my Sun;
And in that Light of life I’ll walk, till trav’ling days are done.

* HYMN I Have No Bucket, and the Well Is Deep
Hal H. Hopson
Who are you, strange yet friendly at my side,
and can you see and judge, yet understand
my hidden self, and heal with wounded hands?
Are you the path, the gateway and the guide,
the keys, the living water, and the light?
Come break the rock, and bid the rivers flow
from deep unending wells of joy and worth,
for tears, for drinking, drowning and new birth,
and I shall find and give myself, and know
the keys, the living water, and the light.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come; thy will be done, on earth as it is in

debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into
temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the
kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

MUSIC IN WORSHIP
Psalm 95 is comprised of two parts. Th first section, verses 1 – 6,
invites us to join the procession to the temple. We begin with a
strong introduction: “Come, let us sing to the Lord; let us shout; let
us worship.” This introduction indicates a good deal about the sort
of worship occurring here. It involves singing songs of praise, it is
addressed to the “rock of our salvation;” and it will be carried out
with joy and enthusiasm. The second half of the Psalm, verses 7 –
12, is a call to bow down and kneel. The preacher calls forth
negative examples from the past. As the Israelites traveled through
the desert and lacked water, Moses struck a rock and water came
gushing out. But there had been so much complaining and
quarreling among the people that Moses called the place “Massah”
and “Meribah,” which mean “testing “and “quarreling.” And now,
says this preacher speaking in the name of the Lord, “Don’t test me
again as you tested me at that time!” The Psalm reminds us that
whatever happens to God’s people, we are still God’s people and
God will provide and take care of us.
