Friday 11 January to Saturday 9 February - The Hellenic Centre Loukia Nicolaidou-Vassiliou Paintings Exhibition Loukia Nicolaidou-Vassiliou (1909-1994) is a “pioneer of female artistic creation” in Cyprus. In 1939 she took part in a group exhibition in London and shortly after that withdrew from the artistic sphere. Following a major exhibition of her work in 1992 organised by the Cypriot Ministry of Education, she was heralded as “an important figure of con-temporary Cypriot art”. Her paintings adorn private collections, governmental de-

partments and galleries in Cyprus; a small number of them have been entrusted to the Hel-lenic Centre by her family. On the Hellenic Centre’s 25th anniversary it seems fitting to hon-our this exceptional female Cypriot artist with an exhibition of these paintings. Free entry; for opening hours call 020 7487 5060. Organised by the Hellenic Centre.

Wednesday 16 January to Sunday 24 February - The Hellenic Centre #TextMe_PaperFashion A pop-up exhibition from the Greek cultural organisa-tion ATOPOS Contemporary Visual Culture’s Paper Dress Collection. It has been especially created to mark UNESCO’s Athens 2018, World Book Capital, and the Hellenic Centre’s 25th Anniversary. The exhibition investigates the relationship between text and paper in fashion through selected objects from the collection. Disposable paper dresses from the 1960s, some printed with press cuttings from American and English newspapers, are displayed alongside garments made of re-

cycled pages from account books such as the rare Japanese shifu underclothes from the Edo period. Also included are garments created by distinguished designers such as Hussein Cha-layan, Demna Gvasalia, Issey Miyake, John Galliano and Martin Margiela. The ATOPOS cvc Paper Dress collection has been internationally acclaimed through the exhibition ‘RRRIPP!! Paper Fashion’, which was first presented at the Benaki Museum, Athens in 2007 and has since been shown at, amongst others, MUDAM, Luxembourg, the MoMu, Antwerp, the Bel-lerive Design Museum, Zurich and the Gallerie Stihl, Waiblingen. This is the first time the Collection will be exhibited in London. Opening hours: Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 12-7pm, Wednesday 12-9pm (guided tours between 7-9pm by the curators Stamos Fafalios and Vassilis Zidianakis), Saturday and Sunday 12-5pm. Free entry. Tuesday 29 January, 7pm - The Hellenic Centre Paper Dress: Future of History? Introduced in the late 1960s the Paper Dress was one of the strongest symbols of a new Zeitgeist and a throw away culture symbolised an easy, modern and comfortable lifestyle. Everything was light and immediately replaceable due to new materials with new qualities. Nowadays paper is attractive because of its sustain-able strength, since 80% of all paper gets recycled. Prof Jose Teunissen, School of Design and Technology, London College of Fashion will discuss how the ‘disposable’ character of a Paper Dress can express completely different values within the Fashion history and show the specific qualities and values it can symbolise. Part of #TextMe_PaperFashion exhibition. Free entry; booking essential: 020 7563 9835 or [email protected]. Organised by the Hel-lenic Centre and ATOPOS cvc.

Friday 22 February, 7pm - The Hellenic Centre Wagner and Greece Throughout his adult life, Wagner felt a huge admiration for the Greeks and was decisively influenced by their mythology and drama, especially Aeschylus and his Oresteia Trilogy. Indeed the conception and structure of Der Ring des Nibelungen as a Tetralogy was inspired by this Trilogy, while Wagner’s depiction of the Gods bears obvious similarities to their Greek mythological counterparts: Wotan echoes the philandering Zeus, Fricka the wronged and perpetually nagging Hera and so on. Helena Matheopoulos, will trace, through her illustrated talk, the source of this influence through Wagner’s own writings and excerpts from DVDs of various productions of the Ring worldwide. Free entry; booking essen-tial: 020 7563 9835 or [email protected]. Organised by the Hellenic Centre.

Tuesday 19 February, 7pm - The Hellenic Centre Walking Billboards or Wearable History? Paper Dresses from the ATOPOS cvc Col-lection Fashion and newspaper headlines are both ephemeral. Historically, newspa-pers, either as a material or source of inspiration, have been used in fancy dress and fashion in imaginative ways. Designers such as Elsa Schiaparelli, John Galliano, Demna Gvasalia and Rei Kawakubo, amongst others, have employed newspaper-printed fabrics in their creations, while various Paper Dresses from the 1960s are adorned with cuttings from the newspapers they promoted. However, the printed words are not incidental – they bear special meanings. With Paper Dresses from the ATOPOS collection as a starting point, Myrsini Pichou will ex-plore in her talk the fascinating relationship between newspapers and fashion. Part of #TextMe_PaperFashion exhibition. Free entry; booking essential: 020 7563 9835 or [email protected]. Organised by the Hellenic Centre and ATOPOS cvc.

B.C. choregic monument, whose Stuart and Revett 18th century drawings inspired ‘Greek Revival’ buildings in Europe and North America, its conversion into the Middle Byzantine period church of ‘St Mary of the Cave’, its bombard-ment damage in 1827 and its recent full restoration in 2017 by the speaker. Monday 11 March, 1pm - The Hellenic Centre Lunchtime Piano Concert by Duo Dithyrambico Christos Fountos and Angelina Pav-lou perform a programme of piano 4-hands music including Stravinsky’s groundbreaking bal-let score The Rite of Spring and other orchestral works arranged for two pianists. The concert promises to not only create the essence of an orchestra with a single instrument but to also take us in an exploration of sounds and reveal the history behind the music: scandals, riots, censorship and denunciation. Each one of the works to be performed marked the music of the 20th century and led into changing notions, breaking the boundaries, establishing a new era and making the pieces and their composers the most influential of the past century. This con-cert will bring together the avant-gardism and modernism of Stravinsky and Shostakovich, Prokofiev’s neoclassical youth and the Jazz virtuosity of Kapustin. It will also include recent new transcriptions for 4-hands by Christos Fountos, made especially for Duo Dithyrambico. Free entry; booking essential: 020 7563 9835 or [email protected]. FREE CULTURAL EVENTS

Thursday 21 March, 7pm - The Hellenic Centre Rethinking Language Education in the UK’s Greek Cypriot Diaspora Like many other minorities in the UK, the Greek Cypriot diaspora has established a well-developed network of after-hours schools that teach Greek as a heritage language and through it transmit core aspects of Greek and Greek Cypriot culture to young members of the community. A number of studies, however, indicate that the use of Greek (both Cypriot Greek and Standard Greek) is in decline among British-born Greek Cypriots as younger generations increasingly prefer to speak English even when communicating with other people with a Greek Cypriot background – a finding that calls for a rethink of the language provision that is offered in Greek comple-mentary schools. Dr Petros Karatsareas (Lecturer in English Language and Linguistics, Uni-versity of Westminster) will discuss, in English, the value attached to the Cypriot Greek dia-lect by Greek complementary schools and argue in favour of its thoughtful integration in the teaching and learning process as it will help the schools to fulfil their mission as key transmit-ters of the Greek Cypriot diaspora’s cultural heritage. Free entry; booking essential: 020 7563 9835 or [email protected]. Organised by the Hellenic Centre.

Friday 15 March, 7pm - The Hellenic Centre Brexit: What Next? Saturday 30 March, 2pm to 5pm & Sunday 31 March, 1pm to 4pm - The Hellenic Centre Apple, Cinnamon and Sugar An interactive play in Greek presented by Fournos Theatre. The show is based on an English folk story. A Grandmother wants to bake an apple pie for her grandchildren but discovers that at her home she has only ruby, juicy cherries and no apples at all. She tries to find someone to exchange her yummy cherries for some apples but soon realises that this is not an easy task. So, she begins a long journey, meets on her way different characters with different needs and in the end finds the apples she needs. Employing humour and songs, the play shows our young friends the importance of determination in achieving our goals and the value of helping

one another. Duration of play 55 minutes with no interval. A workshop delivered by the Hellenic Hub will follow the performance. Children will make lampada - the traditional Easter candle - Easter eggs and bunnies and apple hats. The event will conclude with traditional songs and dance. The play and the workshop are suitable for children over 3. Tickets for adults and children over 3 £15; adults admitted only if accompanying children. Bookings: 020 7487 5060 or Eventbrite.
