Chuck Grassley is now third in line for the presidency after being sworn in as Senate president pro tempore. Grassley and U.S. Sen. Joni Ernst, both Republicans from Iowa, received appoint- ments to committees and lead governmental roles in the 116th Congress. Grassley was sworn in as president pro tempore last week and was nominated to serve as chairman of the Senate Finance Committee. The president pro tem pre- sides over the Senate in the vice president’s absence. The Senate unanimously named Grassley the posi- tion, which historically has been given to the most senior member of the majority party in the upper chamber of Congress. He was first elected to represent Iowa in the U.S. Senate in 1980. Grassley is now the third in line to the presidency fol- lowing the vice president and speaker of the House of Representatives. The only other Iowan to hold the office was Sen. Albert B. Cummins, who assumed office in 1919, 100 years before Grassley assumed the role. “This is an honor for me and the state of Iowa. Iowans have trusted me to represent them in the Senate for 38 years,” Grassley said in a press release. “I may only be three heartbeats away from the Oval Office, but my heart is and always will be in Iowa and here in the U.S. Senate.” When presiding over the Senate, the president pro tem- pore can administer oaths, enforce decorum, recognize Senators desiring to speak, introduce bills, or offer amendments and motions to bills being debated. Grassley also was named chairman of the Senate Finance Committee by fel- low Senate Republicans. Grassley announced in November that he would serve as chair- man of the Senate Finance Committee after four years as chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Grassley said the nomina- tion was an honor. “For far too long, increas- es in prescription drug pric- es and health care generally have been causing tremen- dous diffi- culties for Americans. In addition to costs, there are other barri- ers to access to afford- able, quality health care. Those barriers are felt acutely in rural and other underserved areas. The Senate Finance Committee has broad jurisdiction to improve access to affordable health care. I intend to use those authorities. “Implementing the U.S.- Mexico-Canada Agreement and working with the Administration as it nego- tiates with China, Europe, Japan and the United Kingdom will be top priori- ties for me this year, as well as ensuring that Congress fulfills its constitutional role in crafting and reviewing U.S. trade policy.” Grassley also has served as chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee since January 2015.
