Secondary Schools Special Olympics The Annual Athletics event for the Special Olympics was held on the 2nd of November at Logan Park in Dunedin with representation from most schools in Dunedin as well as
some from the Otago area. Six students from Tokomairiro took part and all competed well in their events and represented the school very well. Because of rain the long jump was cancelled but students still took part in 50m walk, 100m, 200m and either shot put or softball throw. Everyone gets a ribbon for their place in each event to reward their participation and it is inspiring to see the great effort put in by the athletes. From Tokomairiro - Brendon Raukura, Teryn Gillies, Emma Gunion, Anna Taal and Gina Scurr took part in the sprints, Chantalle Fegan in the 50m walk, Brendon and Gina in shot put and Emma, Teryn, Anna and Chantalle in the soft ball throw.
School Supports Local Food Bank The Tokomairiro High School Student Council recently held a dedicated food donation mufti-day in order to collect canned and non-perishable food items for the local food bank. The mufti-day was a great success and a large amount of canned foods were collected. Madeleine Hammersley, Russell Tredwell and Bernie O’Sullivan presented the donation to the Milton Foodbank coordinator, Rev Vivienne Galletly who was delighted by the show of support for the community.

Fantastic Win for Cricket Team in Super 8s
The Tokomairiro High School Year 7/8 cricket team won the annual Super 8s competition at the Milton Showground’s last Wednesday. In the final, they beat a strong Balclutha Primary school team in a cliffhanger 33 runs to 30. The Super 8s is a competition involving eight players, each bowling one over, and batsman pair up and face two overs each. Runs are lost when a batsman gets out. This results in low scoring and tight competition. In the semifinal, the Toko team beat Rosebank 43 runs to 38. During the final, Toko batted first and scored 33 runs and although Balclutha looked on track to reach the target, Toko managed to take key wickets at vital times with excellent bowling and fielding.
Back Row from left; Campbell Scott, Shane Patrick, Sam Fischli. Front row from left; Travis Reekie, Dylan Lee, Dylan Gold, Billy Greer, Matthew Robinson, Sam MacDonald.

Thank you On behalf of Kelly Hewitt and myself, we would like to express our gratitude to the Tokomairiro High School PTA for the funding given to us to represent Tokomairiro at the Gifted and Talented Program at the Marine Research Centre 2011. Working in a stimulating out-of-school environment with other likeminded students from the Otago Region, was an opportunity we wouldn’t have had, without the money granted to us. I learnt so much about the marine world and advanced learning techniques. This has been really helpful to use in class and to teach others. Staying overnight on Quarantine Island was great. The activities we did there helped us to use the more creative side of our projects. Like having to create our own breed of marine animal. These inventive tasks stimulated us to take our research further and make it interesting, informative and fun. During the program we worked in real laboratories collecting real data for scientific analysis. It was all hands-on and we were encouraged to do our projects as a group with our mentor there to give us advice when needed. The program challenged us to think in new ways and the results were always rewarding. Every second was packed full of new things to learn, do and see. It was a fantastic experience and a trip I’ll never forget - thank you. Bryn Massey
Milton Senior Citizens Report Our fortnightly meeting was held at the rooms on Friday 11th November at 12 noon with a shared lunch. There was a good variety of food to choose from, which I am sure everyone enjoyed. There are two members in hospital and we hope you both get well soon. After lunch, Glenda (in the absence of Moira) welcomed our speaker Tracie McAdams-Monk who is Healthcare Field Officer for Bupa Medical Alarms. She told us Bupa provide a range of services for older people. You can choose the help you need like a neighbour, family, Police, Fire Service, or Ambulance. If there is no reply an Ambulance is sent automatically. The service provided is 24 hours, seven days a week, and a good way to make sure if anything happens that you are only a call away from help, worth thinking about. Thank you Tracie for your time and expertise. Glenda presented Tracie with a gift as an appreciation from us. There are brochures at the rooms if you need more information. We then had our meeting at which the two bus trips were finalised. The concert in Owaka, 25th November and the Christmas Mystery Bus trip on the 9th December (the final meeting for the year). On Saturday night, some of us went to Dunedin to the “Big Night In Concert” held at the Forsyth Bar Stadium. We enjoyed a good night out with entertainment to suit everybody. Thank you John for organising this for us. Afternoon tea brought our busy day to an end. Raffle won by John Stewart. Next Meeting Bus trip to Owaka please note bus leaves rooms at 12 noon. Please have your lunch before you leave. Afternoon tea is provided after the concert. Final meeting for the year - Christmas Mystery Bus trip on the 9th December.

Milton Playcentre News
It is hard to believe that there are only five more weeks until the end of term, and what a busy five weeks it is promising to be. Mayor’s Visit We would like to take this opportunity to thank The Honorable Mayor, Bryan Cadogan for visiting our Centre, bearing a certificate
and prize money for promoting RWC 2011. There were reciprocal enjoyment from both children and the Major as they led him around the playground. Josh Lister gave him a very official welcoming to Playcentre, and mentioned that they were pleased he came. Children are enjoying lots of outdoor activities like water-play and the sandpit, incorporating math’s and communication skills in their play, and when the water is drained away …... we hunt for worms. Inside we were working on our science experiments making tornados – enquiring about volume, size and pressure. Playcentre is open 5 days a week from 8.45am to 12.45pm for children aged birth to 5 years. It is a great way to meet other parents and create lasting friendships for both adults and children. Come along, and join us for a session at 34 Spencer St, Milton and enjoy our warm, welcoming and friendly Centre for yourself. Spaces available now, our fees are minimal, 20
free hours and WINZ subsidy available. We also have available; Playcentre Recipe Books for sale with some really great and easy recipes for you to try out. St Mary's School Twilight Fair - This Friday!!
The countdown is on! This Friday from 5.30pm St Mary's School have their Twilight Fair. This annual event has become popular with local families. The hot food is a particular draw card - and this year will be even better than ever. There will be butter chicken, nachos, American Hotdogs and a BBQ, along with Devonshire Teas for those who prefer something a little sweeter. There will be plenty to keep the kids entertained too including old favourites - fire engine rides, Barrie Delaney's famous vintage car rides, rifle shooting, and the very popular Fishy Dippers. Something new this year is digger rides - great for little kids and big kids too! At 6.30pm there'll be a sandpit dig with great prizes to be won. There are two sections - children 5 and under, and children aged 6 plus. Another fun activity to try is cupcake decorating. Create your own unique decorated cupcake on Friday night at the Fair - and put it in for judging at the end. We are having a special judge for this, Holly from Holly bees Cakes and she will be passing on some of her very special cake decorating tips. As always, we have our chocolate wheel well stocked with prizes, delicious baking, homemade sweets, candyfloss, raffles, face painting, an Elegant Junk stall and plants stall. For some pre-Christmas shopping, we are hosting local craft stalls. We also have Tombola with high odds of winning. The Twilight Fair is always lots of fun and we can guarantee something for everyone. We appreciate the support of local businesses with prize donations, as well as everyone who attends the fair - our major fundraiser for the year. We are also thankful that we have a great committee who has spent many hours organising the fair. St Mary's Twilight Fair is on, rain or shine, so see you there, at St Mary's School, Chaucer Street, this Friday, 18 November, starting at 5.30pm.
Juniors Trip to Dunedin On 1st November, the junior classes went on a school trip to the Otago Museum and Moana Pool. Their first stop was the Museum and while they were there, they went to Starlab. Starlab is like a big balloon and you go inside it and when they turn the lights off you can see all the stars and planets. The children all loved it. They had lunch at the Museum. Then they got geared up and they headed off to Moana Pool. The children were really lucky to have lots of parent helpers because they were a big help on the trip. The children went in lots of the pools like the whirl pool, the fountain pool and the wave pool. All of the children had fun at the Museum and Moana Pool.
Super 8 Cricket Tournament On Tuesday the 8th November a group of Year 6 children from Milton Primary School went to the cricket Super 8 tournament at the Milton Rugby grounds. The children did very well coming about fifth in the tournament. They won their first game against St Mary’s School and then lost their second game against Clinton Primary but they went on to win their two last games against Kaitangata and St Mary’s. The previous week we had had a cricket coach come to the school to teach us some cricket skills and the Super 8 tournament was a great opportunity to put what we had learnt into practice.
