Welcome back to what is traditionally an incredibly busy term. During the term we will have such things as Extravaganza, Year 10 Work Week, Senior Practice Examinations, our Year 12 Ski Trip and the Year 13 Geography trip to Queenstown. As well as these events, our winter sports teams continue in their various competitions and there will the annual Otago Secondary Schools Music Festival also this term. The term starts with two important events next week, the first being a sporting exchange with Tokomairiro High School. This will be different to our traditional exchange with Tokomairiro in that this is a team sport event rather than a year group series of sports. The sports played will be Year 7/8 hockey, soccer, netball and rugby. It will be a challenging exchange as Tokomairiro is about fifty percent larger than us and therefore will have a far greater pool of players from which to select their teams. That said, I know our students will relish the challenge and opportunity of playing a different school than they otherwise meet in their regular competition. The other major event that occurs next week is our Open Day which is being held on Thursday 26 th July. Students from our contributing schools will spend the day with us undertaking a variety of activities including P.E., Food Technology, Wood Technology, Science and Music. The students will gain an insight into what life is like at East Otago High School. Parents and Caregivers are welcome to meet the Year 7/8 teachers for morning tea, at 10.30 in the staff room. Following morning tea parents/caregivers will have the opportunity to meet with the Head of the Junior School- Ms Kirsty McLachlan, the Junior Dean- Mr Peter Murray and myself. This will be followed by a tour of the school which will be undertaken with our Head Students, Matthew McLelland and Paige Aitcheson. We are really proud of what we do and what we achieve at East Otago High School. It is a school where we have high expectations of our students whether it be academically, on the sporting field or through cultural pursuits. A number of students have had the opportunity to attend courses over the holiday period in a variety of different fields as diverse as radio, the army and the electrical trades. Our students are fortunate with the range of activities and opportunities that are now available to them. In a similar vein, our History students who are off to Vietnam next year have a fundraising Quiz next Monday. The details are included in this newsletter and they would really appreciate your support in this or any of the other events they are arranging. This term is an important one for all students, particularly those in the senior school. If students develop the correct school and study routines then success at the end of the year is significantly more likely. Any effort put in now will be rewarded later, so go for it! 20th July 2012 Our Values are based on the acrostic - ’RELATIONSHIPS’ where R = Respect towards self & others, E = Empathy for others, L = Loyalty to family, friends and school, A = Acceptance of those around you, T = Tolerance of other opinions, actions & differences, I = Integrity towards all aspects of life, O = Ownership of actions and change, N = Nurturing skills, talents and attributes, S = Sensitivity of any situation, H = Honesty in thought, word & deed, I = Inclusiveness of all, regardless of age, ethnicity or characteristics, P = Patience with and to those around you, S = Support for fellow students, family & teachers S
