Delivered:

Recommendations for the extension of producer scope, necessary

modifications of the Fairtrade system over the next 5 years and vision

2011 achieved:Economic MechanismsAnalysis

Rethink the economic mechanisms within Fairtrade and develop optimised economic mechanisms to achieve Fairtrade’s objectives

1.Explore economic mechanisms instead of or additional to

the current Fairtrade Minimum Price

2.Explore new ideas regarding the use of the premium to

enhance empowerment of producers

Delivered: Flexible toolbox for pricing. It’s not just about price. Profit is what matters. Pricing is (only) one of Fairtrade’s key tools, to be complemented by other non-pricing tools.

Targets 2012:Expand Fairtrade‘s sphere of influence

Advocacy strategy, partly via Fair Trade Advocacy Office

(FTAO), Brussels, Belgium:

• Fairtrade not being regulation

• Recognition of added value of Fairtrade to poverty reduction and

sustainable production and consumption (including public

procurement)

• Fairer trade conditions / trade justice

• Climate Change

• Positioning in international debate

Target 2012:Gender

To develop of a gender strategy for Fairtrade

• 2 main arguments for addressing gender inequalities:

1. Economic arguments (productivity, efficiency)

2. Rights based arguments (equality, justice)

• Little systematic gender analysis has been carried out.

• Possibility that existing gender inequalities are reinforced by

Fairtrade: men more likely to access and control benefits.

• In general Fairtrade so far is relatively gender blind.
