The History of Berlinger AGThe Berlinger family crest features three beehives. They symbolize industriousness and business acumen. Now and then, as a member of the sixth generation, it also strikes me — as we hurry to-and-fro — that we are indeed busy bees in a beehive. A lively coming and going; striving and working; and constant bustling with creation for the benefit of all! But read for yourself about the fascinating development of our ‘Berlinger Beehive’, which has happily already tripled over the past few years.
Andrea Berlinger Schwyter, CEO Daniel Schwyter -Berlinger, CEO
Johann Jakob Berlinger
established the first
cotton weaving mill
in the region. His son,
Lieutenant Colonel Jo-
hann Georg Berlinger
ran a brisk trade in
fine jacquard fabrics,
which were exported
to India. At that time,
Ulrich Berlinger ran
the branch office in
Manchester, England.
Enter Charles Egli,
tinkerer and a school-
mate of Jürg Berlinger.
Together with
the already innovative
married couple, they
developed one inven-
tion after another.
A new commodity, i.e.
reclosable fastener sys-
tems by Gottlieb Binder,
further nourished their
spirit of innovation.
They developed Fasten-
ers in tunnels, in cars
and trains, complex
laminate and adhesive
bonds. The horizon
seemed limitless.
Birth of Jürg Berlinger.
He oversaw the rapid
development of the
company from 1959.
In 1965, he married
Liselotte Berlinger-
Zäch, who supported
him energetically from
the very start. The cou-
ple diversified the firm
and piloted it safely
through the crisis in the
textile industry in the
Seventies and Eighties.
They always under-
stood how to make an
assortment of attrac-
tive items that meet the
needs of customers.
Max Berlinger was
born. A sensitive writer
and creative mind who
invented bias tape, giv-
ing the company new
impetus. He laid the
corner stones of the
tape-cutting depart-
ment, which survived
until 2002.
Max married the doc-
tor’s daughter Heidi
Hilty from Werdenberg
in 1938, was elected
mayor and success-
fully led the company
as chairman until 1972.
A great misfortune
befell the family with
a fire in 1902. The
fire destroyed the
building, down to the
ground. This was a
difficult time for the
entire workforce. The
First World War, eco-
nomic crisis, and no
insurance that might
have helped finance
the reconstruction.
The innovative spirit
of Col. Paul and Jacob
Berlinger was now
much needed as they
risked trade in textiles
and fabrics.
1902 19391865 1911 1972
‘We have always invested daily in values, people and sustainability. To be precise — in our future.’
Renewed company
diversification. This
was followed by the
first orders on behalf
of what is today the
company’s central pil-
lar — the manufacture
of temperature moni-
toring devices. Thanks
to the 3M Company,
with whom we culti-
vated a close business
relationship based
on tape manufacture,
Berlinger became the
worldwide distributor
of temperature moni-
toring cards (vaccine
cold-chain monitor
card). This involved vac-
cination projects with
the WHO and UNICEF.
Complete renovation
of the residential and
office building on Mit-
teldorfstrasse. In addi-
tion to a new under-
ground repository built
four meters beneath
the ground floor, the
former home of Heidi
and Max Berlinger
was transformed into
offices and the attic
was converted. Three
new flats were built.
Liselotte Berlinger
oversaw the interior
design. Discreet and
tasteful — still visible
to this day!
1999 Founding of Q-tag
AG. The reorientation of
Berlinger towards the
world of electronics
and its turn away from
its roots in the textile
industry are sealed.
Over 10 electronic
temperature monitor-
ing devices including
the well-known brands
‘Q-tag®’ ‘Fridge-tag®’
and ‘Freeze-tag®’ were
developed. The innova-
tive spirit lives on.
1992 Andrea Berlinger
joins the company; in
1996, she marries the
current CEO, Daniel
Schwyter. Birth of the
BEREG-KIT. The world-
famous security bot-
tles for doping control
of urine and blood
samples. This inven-
tion was developed in
close collaboration with
Charles Egli and Dr. Mat-
thias Kamber, Director
of Antidop- ing Switzer-
land. In 1997, Liselotte
and Andrea Berlinger
began marketing the
product internation-
ally. Today, customers
from over 120 countries
rely on this product of
Berlinger Special AG, a
company established
in 1998.
After the handover of
management in 2008
to the sixth generation,
Andrea and Daniel
Berlinger Schwyter, the
new building construc-
tion on the Toggen-
burgerstrasse was
implemented in 2014.
Another milestone
immediately followed
with the acquisition of
the software company
Antaris Solutions B.V.
from Holland.
The product ranges are
rigorously produced
according to the
principles of ‘Lean
Manufacturing’, op-
timised and updated
with innovative new
developments. 2015
The group of compa-
nies celebrates its 150th

In June 2014, the Antaris company and its unique online data management software ‘SmartView®’ were acquired by the Berlinger group. In addition to successful products such as Q-tag®, Freeze tag® and Fridge-tag®, with this acquisition, the Berlinger company underscores its leading role in the field
of temperature monitoring in logistics and storage. SmartView® helps in the analysis of temperature-controlled deliveries and simplifies many costly and time-consuming tasks through automation. You can learn more at:

The online shop, which was imple-mented in collaboration with Brun-ner Pharma AG, has been live for more than a year now and is being used actively. All small orders can be pro-cessed simply and quickly throughout Europe at any time via this webshop. We have now expanded the product range with our Q-tag® CLm doc LR (re-
startable datalogger for monitoring of transports) as well as the Fridge-tag® 2 Freezer (storage monitoring of freezers). We are convinced these additional control devices cover a latent demand and will simplify your temperature monitoring.

PreviewFridge-tag® 3 GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications)
Automatic alarm notification via SMS will soon be possible with the new, user-friendly Fridge-tag® 3 GSM. As of mid-2015, this innovation will comple-mente the existing Fridge-tag® family. Simply insert a SIM card or program the preinstalled microchip with your mobile network provider and off you
go. The Fridge-tag® 3 GSM automati-cally sends an alarm message warn-ing of temperatures that have risen above or fallen below a set tempera-ture; knowing this can help you to act pro-actively. Further information can be requested by e-mail: [email protected]

This year’s company outing took the entire
Berlinger team to Schaffhausen — to Europe’s
largest waterfall, the Rhine Falls. For the first
time, team members of the Antaris company
from Holland attended this event. The compa-
ny was acquired in the summer of 2014: team
members immediately began advancing our
web-based solution in the area of data man-
agement with great dedication.
We warmly welcome all new employees to
Berlinger and look forward to collegial and
constructive cooperation.
