Scope and limitations of the design problem should be stated, identifying:

• The design lesson (Dimension and scale, building components, context, sustainability, flexibility and organization, etc.).

• The scale of the project (urban scale, architectural scale, etc.)

• Any special needs of the client (given scenarios).

• Location of the project (given, selected, hypothetical, etc.)

The aim is to build a common ground of understanding between you and the jury members.

Site analysis is ….. the study of the context of a specific site. The result of site analysis includes text and graphical sketches. The output is a set of context-sensitive design recommendations (design decisions) that can be considered a starting point for the design process.

Site analysis Items include, but not limited to, the following: • Typography (contour lines and

cross sections) • Adjacent land use • Views (natural & man-made

features) • Noise study • Surrounding street network

(traffic) • Accessibility and approach • Climatic study:

• Solar analysis (shade and shadows _ sun path diagram)

• Humidity and cross ventilation possibilities (wind rose)

• Etc.

Design concept … is a holistic idea that to promote an added-value to one or more of the following issues:

• Environmental issues

• Functional issues

• Economic issues,

• Aesthetical issues,

• Structural issues, and

• Social issues

The design concept should be in consistence with the design lesson assigned to the level.

KEYWORDS are a good tactic in generating the design concept

General recommendations:

• Ground floor should be presented on site.

• Building components and systems should be clarified and drawn correctly (e.g. structural systems, mechanical shafts, vertical circulation elements, etc.)

• All plans are of the same drawing scale, where possible.

• Text scale as well as graphical scale should be used.

• Plans as well as site plans should be furnished.

• Vector drawings are strongly recommended.

• Limited use of colors (for specific purposes)

• Appropriate use line weight.

• Plan key should be used.

Students should prove how far they succeeded in tackling the design problems they should solve (e.g. energy, character, context, etc.), according to the design lesson assigned to their level.

The aim is to experience what is called ‘evidence based design’.

To do that, the final project has to be analyzed/tested via:

• Available software packages; e.g. Revit, Ecotect, DepthmapX (Space Syntax), etc.

• Graphical analysis; e.g. visual sequence, type of movement analysis, character analysis, etc.

• Calculations

• Etc.

• Project info (title, lesson, level, student name, ID number, Design studio, year, semester) should be clearly stated.

• Use A1-based sheet size.

• Overall design for all sheets as one board

• Standard scales should be used (1/50, 1/100, 1/200, etc.)

• Best selection of items’ size according to their significance.

• Avoid the excessive use of rendered shots.

• Alignment of presentation items is recommended.

• Appropriate use of colors.

• No, or limited use of, backgrounds.

• Avoid empty spaces in the sheet.

• Review sheet design samples.
