STANDERTON - Taxpayers’ money is yet again under the spotlight. This time the money is going down the drain, not because of Lekwa Municipality, but due to the community that was supposed to protect what is rightly their property. Instead, irresponsible members of the community went on rampage and destroyed property during the protest march in 2014.

The march was calling for the Executive Mayor, Cllr Caroline Morajane, the Speaker of the Council Cllr Linda Dhlamini and the Municipal Manager Mr Linda

Tshabalala to step down. Marchers under the leadership of SANCO, which is an alliance with the ruling party the ANC, went on a rampage on their way back into Sakhile after they have handed over a memorandum to the Executive at Lekwa Municipal offices in town.

They burned tyres and caused chaos in the township making roads inaccessible for motorists. They threw stones at Lekwa municipal offices breaking doors windows and structures. (continue on page 2)

STANDERTON - Two aggressive men who were allegedly under the influence of alcohol, got what they never bargained for. They were beaten up by the petrol attendants, and subsequently taken to hospital for treatment after they instigated a fight with the petrol attendants.

The drama unfolded in Meyerville on Saturday night, 30 May. The two men arrived at the Total filling station just after midnight driving a Mercedes. On arrival they found four men sitting in a Golf just chatting amongst themselves, they allegedly knocked on the window of their car to attract the attention of the occupants of the Golf.

When the men opened the window of the Golf, an exchange of words ensued, it is reported that the quarrel was getting heated and a petrol attendant intervened and requested the occupants of the Golf to drive away, they reportedly obliged and the matter seemed over and done. The two men then focused their attention on the petrol attendant and they charged at him and slapped him in the face. Fearing for his life, he ran inside the filling station and quickly opened the small door to remain behind the counter.

One of the assailants jumped over the counter and started to beat and kick him. The two men both started to kick and hit the attendant and called him the ‘k-word.’ He managed to free himself and ran out of the filling station to Engen filling station across the road to seek refuge.

He got inside behind the fridges and suddenly the two attackers came inside and one was quoted saying: “We should kill this ‘k-word.’ A cashier at Engen garage came from the back of the counter trying to intervene. He was allegedly punched in the face and fell down. His colleagues came in to see what was going on and they too were attacked by the two men. It is alleged that a free for all fight then ensued.

The two men were beaten to the ground by a group of filling station workers in self-defense. They were left lying in a pool of blood while the police and the paramedics were contacted.

Police and paramedics arrived at the scene and one assailant alleg-edly said he wanted to be attended to by white police officers and not a ‘k-word.’ The two were reportedly taken to hospital for treatment under police guard, and the police drove their car to the police station.

It is reported that one of the alleged attackers escaped from the hospital under the nose of the police officer. The petrol attendant was also taken to hospital for treatment on his swollen face.

A 38-year-old attacker was taken into custody after receiving treat-ment. He was charged with assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm. He appeared in court on Monday last week and was remanded into custody. DM

Police came in to disperse unruly protestors and they had to fire rubber bullets to disperse the angry crowds.

The unruly crowd returned later that evening and torched the entire municipal building causing millions of rands in damage.

Officials were forced to vacate the building that was destroyed by the fire and all the assets and resources used to serve the community were destroyed. Today it is back to square one to reconstruct the entire build-ing. A construction company is on site to rebuild the offices. According to a construction worker the reconstruction started on 15 May and is scheduled to be completed in October this year.

It is a Johannesburg based company and the good news is that 12 of

the labourers on the site are local people. One of the local workers said that one man’s misfortune is another’s gain.

The construction company is going to make millions out of this project and whatever amount is going to be spent to rebuild the structures, it could have been used to build a few RDP houses to change the lives of people. These acts of property destruction and vandalism are hindering progression. The Executive Mayor, Speaker and Municipal Manager are still in office but buildings belonging to the community were destroyed. Only the taxpayers and people who could have had RDP houses built are suffering because of these foolish acts. DM

NATIONAL - SANRAL used an innovative high-tech airborne survey to investigate a traffic solution for Ermelo. This was the ex-planation by Mr Mpati Makoa the road agen-cy’s environmental manager. Once a traffic or safety related problem has been identified through SANRAL’s road monitoring process, engineers are tasked with planning a solution.

Ermelo is located along three major national routes- N2, N11, and N17, in addition to being important routes for tourist’s traffic, all three routes are busy freight corridors for timber, agricultural produce and coal. As more ve-hicles pass through the town of Ermelo, traffic flow has been compromised and road safety threatened. An initial scoping process and the resultant report which was approved in March 2014 found no environmental flaws related to the ring road, however, a range of socio-economic impacts that may occur were identi-fied by interested and affected parties through public participation.

These as well as biodiversity and previous mining activity impacts are currently being assessed through special studies as part of the Environmental Impact Assessment(EIA), which is expected to be finalised during 2015.

SECUNDA - Police are investigating an inquest that was registered after a human body with an amputated limb was discovered at Sasol in Secunda on Saturday at approximately 06:00. Police received a com-plaint regarding a human head that was found on a conveyor belt that is used to transport coal to the coal station. The discovery was made by an employee who immediately switched off the machine as soon as he noticed the head.

A search for the missing body was immediately instituted by pol ice and staff of Sasol. The body, with its right arm amputated was discov-ered in one of the coal shafts at a later stage.

The police in conjunction with the Sasol Intelligence Unit have launched an investigation into this matter to determine whether the victim was an employee, a contractor or someone who was trespass-ing.

Police urge anyone with information that could assist in the probing of this matter to call the Secunda police station at 017 624 2125 or Crime Stop at 08600 10111.

Nompumelelo Ntuli, a 14-year-old resident of Sakhile, went missing dur-ing December 2014. This young girl had a baby in November 2014. The baby was left in the father’s care when she went mis-sing. The family urges the community to please contact them if you have any information about her whereabouts. STANDERTON - A driver of a minibus and his passenger had a narrow escape when the driver of the vehicle lost control of the vehicle and overturned it. The accident happened last Friday at 11:00 on the Ermelo Road, 15 km outside of Standerton.

According to the 28-year-old driver, who suffered minor inju-ries, he was travelling from Er-melo to Standerton following a heavy duty truck. He managed to overtake the truck not aware that there is a lorry in front of

the truck. In the process he tried to slow down to avoid a head-on collision with an oncoming van. As the van went pass the mini-bus, the two vehicles made con-tact and the minibus overturned on the right hand side of the road facing oncoming traffic.

The driver managed to remove his passenger from the wreck. The man sustained serious in-juries. An ambulance arrived at the scene and the injured passen-ger was evacuated to hospital for treatment. DM

An industrial size rubbish bin behind shops in the main street caught fire on Sunday afternoon, 7 June, at about 14:00. Al-though the fire brigade was summoned to the scene, one of the shopkeepers as well as Mr Fourie of a nearby electrical shop doused the flames. The reason for the fire is uncertain and as far as could be determined, no damage was caused.

Here Jesus, toe U op aarde geleef, gewerk en wonderwerke gedoen het, was U ‘n Onderwyser vir die mens

Ek wil graag U voorbeeld volg, daarom vra ek U leiding.

STANDERTON - The student movement has been surprised by the recent acts of violence by the learners to the teachers. It has come to our attention that in the past few weeks there have been reported cases where learners have retaliated violently towards their teachers in our public schools. This kind of behavior is of grave concern and requires immediate attention and necessary intervention by both the parents and the government as a whole.

The recent acts of violence must be strongly condemned and dealt with. Our institution of learning in particular primary and secondary schools must never lose their morals of operation and their conducts. This is why necessary intervention must take place. We as the student movement can no longer ignore the high usage of drugs and alcohol in our schools. We are sincerely calling upon parents to take initiative and come on board and give attention to what their children engage in. Even today our primary objective is to advocate for academic excellence in our lifetime to build conscious academic to advance the freedom charter. This is the main reason why we still continue to stand up and condemn any obstacles and challenges that temper our mission to academic excellence.

Let us not allow the usage of substance abuse among our learners change our cultural beliefs and norms that younger ones must obey and respect the elders, be it a stranger, neighbour, and most importantly, our educators. The civil society and religious leaders must serve as assistants through any possible measures.

With the 36th anniversary of COSAS coming, we would also like to wish the movement many more years to come in the struggle of championing issues of students at pre-tertiary level.

We say NO to substance abuse. No to violence against both our teachers and learners.

Hy is allesbehalwe dom.

ERMELO - In a dramatic turn of events leading to the lo-cal election in less than a year, the African National Con-gress cracked the whip on undisciplined members to get their house in order. It remains to be seen if the move will not unsettle the ANC’s ship which seems to be sailing on troubled waters.

A key member of the ANC of Lekwa, Standerton, Mr Nicholas Selepe, was shown the door while another two members were slammed with three years suspension. On Friday 5 May, African National Congress’ Gert Sibande Region, released a media statement to inform its mem-bers, structures, supporters and community of Lekwa Mu-nicipality at large about its decision.

The statement reads as follows: The Regional Execu-tive Committee on the basis of the recommendations of the ANC Regional Disciplinary Committee to sanction the following comrades as follows: Nicholas Selepe is expelled from the ANC with immediate effect, Madoda Sigasa and Sayitsheni Tsotetsi suspended for three years respectively, the statement went further to confirm that Dumisane Nkonde has voluntarily jumped ship and re-signed from the organisation.

However the affected members have within their rights to appeal to the Provincial Disciplinary Committee. ANC Regional Secretary, Mr Joshua Nkosi said: “The affected members will be duly informed.” When asked to shed

some light with the entire membership about transgres-sions committed by the trio, he declined to reveal further information stating only that the members breached the code of conduct.

Although the Regional Secretary of the ANC did not divulge further information about the breached code of conduct, it is no secret that Nicholas Selepe led numerous marches under the auspices of the South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) against the leadership of Le-kwa Municipality in the past year. Sanco is an alliance partner to the ruling party as well as Cosatu and South Af-rican Communist Party, in essence Selepe, as a member of the ANC was actually marching against himself within the ranks of the alliance.

One prominent member of the ANC who asked not to be named said that the dismissal of Selepe might have a negative impact taking into consideration that he com-mands a sizeable following in the disgruntled communi-ty of Lekwa. Mr Nkosi was accompanied by Mr Linda Dhlamini and Mr Doctor Mtshali during the media brief-ing at Lek wa Municipal building.

Asked to comment about his expulsion from ANC, Mr Selepe said: “I will not comment to the media until such time I have received formal notification from the ANC’s regional office. If I am expelled from the organisation through the media will remain to be seen.” DM

ANC delegation during the media briefing are from left to right messrs Linda Dhlamini, Joshua Nkosi and Doctor Mtshali.

STANDERTON - Naledi Radebe (9) a grade 4 pupil at Leseli Combined School lives up to the meaning of her name which means ‘star’.

The shy and humble pupil is a shining star at school after she won two spelling bee competitions on circuit and district level. Hundreds of pupils from different schools participated in the event held at Sizweni Teachers Centre in Embalenhle, Secunda on the 3 June. Naledi is gearing up for the regional competition to be held in Ermelo in July. A shy Naledi said: “I want to reach the provincial competition to represent my school and Gert Sibande with pride.” DM

Happy faces and smiles say it all after beneficiaries received brand new school uniforms.

STANDERTON – Every school countrywide is facing social challenges that hinders the progress of pupils, with most of them becoming dropouts. Sakhile schools are no exception to these social- ills. This epidemic has prompted the Department of Education to make inroads to schools to introduce Girls Educational Movement (GEM) to fight the increase of teenage pregnancies.

Stanwest Combined School was the first to launch the awareness campaign a few years ago after experiencing alarming teenage pregnancy and abuse of drugs and alcohol. According to the president of the movement at Stanwest School, Mduduzi Buthelezi, who was a guest speaker during the launch, teenage pregnancy and abuse of drugs has dramatically decline at his school. Many pupils, both boys and girls, have joined the movement. They now spend their free time on social activities that keep them busy.

Addressing pupils at Jandrel Secondary School on Wednesday last week, Mduduzi said that pure pressure and lack of activities drive learners to spend their valuable time on socialills. They become vulnerable to unprotected sex when they are on drugs and alcohol, resulting in pregnancy and contraction of sexually transmitted diseases and HIV-Aids.

Pupils lose focus on their studies and resort to ill-discipline towards their teachers. GEM has lined up activities such as debates, sport, competitions, and manual activities to maintain the school environment. Nhlakanipho Khumalo a grade 11 at Jandrel school was happy that pupils are responding well to the campaign and 40 pupils are actively involved in all activities. He is positive that the movement will attract many pupils after the launching of their slogan ‘I am my sister’s keeper, I am my brother’s keeper.’ Mr MH Miya and Ms GK Lamola are coordinators at Jandrel Secondary School. With the theme of the campaign ‘Dress a Child’, ten pupils from destitute families received shoes, socks, a pair of trousers, a shirt, a jersey, and a wind-breaker.

School Principal Mrs Mahlangu expressed heartfelt appreciation on behalf of the school and the pupils and said that the uniforms come in handy as kids were experiencing severe cold days in the winter.

Sister Lebohang and Brother Zwane who presented the uniforms said that the campaign is ongoing and intended to touch many pupils from poor families and orphans. DM

omhoog hou.

STANDERTON - A school teacher from Sakhile won a bronze medal in his first at-tempt at the Comrades Marathon this year. Mr Tsepo Nsibande, of Thuto-Thebe Sec-ondary School clocked the finishing line in 10.55:41 which earned him his medal.

He said that he was motivated by his run-ning partners Mr M Mnisi and T Tsotetsi to try his luck at the Comrades as they have been there before. He then decided to give it a go just for fun not expecting to make it to the finish line, but he felt very strong and confident

as the road from Durban to Pietermaritzburg progressed. Along the way he told himself that he wants to make it to the finish line and indeed he did. He jokingly said that from bronze he will aim for gold next time.

He said that running has been his passion, but it never crossed his mind to participate in the Comrades Marathon. His unexpected achievement has inspired young athletes at the school to follow his example. They too feel strong that with hard work, dedication and focus they can make it big time. DM
