Congratulations Class of 2018

By Ellen Ayoub

In schools all across the Diocese of Metuchen, graduation ceremonies are bringing the 2017-2018 school year to an end. At each graduation ceremony, we are able to shine a light on the many accomplishments of our students, to ac-knowledge the dedication of the various administrators and faculty members of each school, and to thank the parents

throughout the years to provide a Catho-lic school education.

Pope Francis consistently urges students to challenge themselves, striv-ing to always be their best: “Dear young people, do not bury your talents, the gifts that God has given you. Do not be afraid to dream of great things.” Our high schools graduates have taken that challenge to heart by garnering $114 million in scholarships and awards. Due to their extraordinary efforts, they will be attending outstanding colleges and universities as they continue their education and pursue their dreams. Our eighth grade graduates are preparing to face the challenge of high school and the new adventures that are in store for them.

As the school year closes, it seems a

lic schools in the lives of our families

and in the life of our Church. In the document, To Teach As Jesus Did, which was written by the US Catholic Bishops in 1972, the bishops clearly stated that Catholic schools exist to teach the mes-sage of Jesus Christ, to build communities that foster that message and to create a culture of service to others. The message of God’s love is to be taught through word and deed, living the message as well as teaching it. Those words continue to guide our schools and our students.

Very recently, the mission of Catholic schools has been laud-ed in the Wall Street Journal. In an article entitled, “The Catholic School Difference,” the editors refer to a recent study that was con-ducted for the Thomas B. Fordham In-stitute by University of California-Santa Barbara associate professor Michael Gottfried and doctoral student Jacob Kirksey. Quoting the WSJ, the authors found statistically meaningful evidence that students in Catholic schools exhib-

ited less disruptive behavior than their counterparts in other schools. “Accord-ing to their teachers, Catholic school children argued, fought, got angry, acted impulsively, and disturbed ongoing ac-

tivities less frequently,” the authors write. Spe-

Catholic schools “were more likely to control their temper, respect others’ property, accept their fellow students’ ideas, and handle peer pressure.” In other words, they exhibited more self-discipline.

One of the unique programs in the Catho-lic schools of the Diocese of Metuchen is called Good God Choices, created by a group of teachers and administrators in the diocese to assist students to make good

choices in all matters and to form the trait of self-discipline. Our teachers are able to help students learn the message of Jesus in their school community by serving others in St. Therese’s ‘little way.’ We hope you will pray the prayer our students pray:

Jesus, make me a disciple of Good and Godly Decisions! Help me to show St. Therese’s “little way” of merciful love and forgiveness to everyone, every-day. LORD, Give me the COURAGE to make the best decisions in my everyday life.

St. Therese, Pray for us.

Graduates: commencement yields pause for thought

EDISON — Urged to become lead-ers of tomorrow, to make the world a better place and to always make time for God, the Bishop George Ahr High School Class of 2018 graduated June 2. With red robes and caps, the 231 gradu-ates, one of the school’s largest classes, processed into the school’s auditorium

and friends as well as the Bishop Ahr com-munity.

Bishop James F. Checchio began the commencement ceremony with an invocation praying, “Almighty, ever-living God, your son Jesus told us, ‘Be not afraid, I am with you always.’ (Is 41:10).

“May this Scrip-ture passage guide and comfort us as we journey through life.”

He added, “To-day, as these gradu-ates begin a new phase of their lives, we ask you to contin-ue to guide them and grant that they be pro-tected from harm.”

Addressing the school’s 46th gradu-ating class, Associ-ate Principal Harry Ziegler remarked that he has no doubt that the Class of 2018 will prove their ability to make their mark on the world. “You have shown what it means to be young men and women of faith, com-passion and character. Your actions

both large and small speak volumes about your determination to speak out for justice to support your brothers and sisters in need. I challenge you to con-tinue to follow that path as leaders of tomorrow. We are counting on you.”

In her congratulatory remarks, Fe-lician Sister Donna Marie Trukowski, principal, told the graduates, “I know that you have received an excellent education. I am glad that we had the

opportunity to talk about God and that you have gotten to know God better and to really believe that God loves all of you and that all of you are unique. God has a challenge for you because you are gift-ed and talented. You need to pursue what-ever it is that will make you happy.”

Proving they have had an excel-lent education, 98 percent of the school’s graduates will be continuing on to colleges and universities and have been awarded schol-arships in excess of $46 million.

In her comments, salutatorian Rebecca Yang said, “The uni-fying theme among all of us here today, is that none of us made it to this position alone. It is by virtue of those

who supported, encouraged, enabled and sometimes forced us and it is to them that much gratitude is due.

-ration for this occasion has reminded

me that although a sense of gratitude cannot over-write reality, it does allow us to change how we see it. And, more often than not, it is nice to see the good.

-thing to be grateful for and to see the good now and in the future. Together we have found a lot to be grateful for at Bishop Ahr.”

-dressed her class by speaking in many different languages. She explained, “I greet you all in different languages be-cause I truly believe that it represents who we are as a community: Diverse in both the cultural and intellectual sense. Like the individual fragments that cre-ate one beautiful mosaic masterpiece, our differences disappear as we come together in one tight-knit family living in one big house at 1 Tingley Lane.

“Every single graduate in this room is capable of making his or her dreams a reality. My tried and true formula is this: Hard work plus perseverance plus the Right Mind Set equals success. At Bishop Ahr, success involves service, justice and compassion. As Bishop Ahr graduates, it is our priority and re-

of society. Fellow graduates, strive for success and make an effort to posi-tively impact our world. Wherever the journey of life takes you, make it your mission not only to do well, but also to do good [works].”

Ziegler presented the graduates to

back on my family. Attending this school prepares you for challenges in life, both good and bad, through prayer, faith in God, community, and each other. Watching Anthony and Nico de-velop into young men who are smart, kind, and considerate speaks volumes, especially in the world today.”

There was much to celebrate as youngest child Jude Roche became

the Ahr alumni. He will soon join his brother Luke ’16, at LaSalle Univer-sity, Philadelphia. Parents Kevin and Sharon said that two other sons are Bishop Ahr faculty members: John is the assistant campus minister and

SOMERVILLE -- The Immaculata High School Class of 2018 gathered with faculty, families and friends June 4 at Immaculate Conception Church for the institution’s 52nd commencement exercises.

In his opening remarks, Bishop James F. Checchio said graduation can seem like

“For some of you the ultimate ques-tion is how much longer can I keep my Snapchat streak going?” Bishop Checchio joked. He encouraged the graduates to keep

WATCHUNG — With the ponderous ringing of a 1,000-pound bell inscribed with the words “We give thanks to God,” the 80 white-gowned members of the Mount Saint Mary Academy Class of

of their chapel to begin commencement exercises June 2.

89 percent of those seniors had been awarded more than $17.7 million in scholarships and grants from institutions of higher learning throughout the nation. Thirty percent of the graduates received scholarships in excess of the four-year cost of attending the pri-vate Catholic all-girls high school owned and operated by the Sisters of Mercy of the Mid-Atlantic.

S a l u t a t o r i a n Elisabeth Incardona, who plans to study the biological sciences at the University of Chicago in Illinois, recognized how much the graduates’ life will change the moment they descended the school perched upon a mountaintop.

“We drove up the hill as Mount students, and will drive down as alumnae,” Incardona said. “Our paths will diverge and lead us to different experiences, different lives. We are kind, respectful and loving women … Our love will keep blooming in the hearts of unimaginable numbers of people [and] you will be the light that brightens even the darkest places we encounter.”

Life is unpredictable, Incardona concluded, “but you are good. Wherever you end up, it will be a better place be-cause you are there.”

Valedictorian Brigid Meisenbacher plans to attend the University of Notre Dame, South Bend. Ind., and study eco-nomics and applied mathematics. She noted that, though the individual details of classes, sports and friendships may have waned, the hopes and dreams had grown.

“They all culminate on this day,” she declared. “At the Mount, we created what we wanted to see in our little beau-tiful community, that we, as freshmen, would have looked up to. The importance of what we have done here relies not in the literal sense, but the spiritual.

“The peace in your heart that the Mount has made … forms the essence of

our time [here]. We grew and loved and learned all we could. Time at the Mount was the foundation for the heights we will reach. If you think we can change lives during high school, can we even imagine what we will do next?”

Mercy Sister Lisa D. Gambacorto, school directress, and assistant directress Karen L. Calta were joined by Bishop James F. Checchio to distribute diplo-mas to the beaming graduates. Each new graduate lingered for a moment before the congregation, then turned the tassel on the cap of a fellow graduate to indi-cate their graduation from the Catholic

high school.

close, emotional ties that existed between faculty and students, each group performed a song during the commencement ex-ercises, delivering a heartfelt musical

days together as the Mount Saint Mary Academy family.

The black-robed faculty sang Christian musician Mark Harris’ “Find Your Wings” with a refrain that wished “I pray that

heart with dreams / And that faith gives you the courage to dare to do great things / I’m here for you whatever this life brings / So let my love give you roots

wings.”Students an-

swered the call to become active alumnae with a song popu-larized by Phillip Phillips, “Home,” which declares, “The trouble it might drag you down / If you get lost, you can always be found / Just know you’re not alone / ‘Cause I’m going to make this place your home.”

tongue in cheek, introduced Bishop Checchio as a “Mercy boy,” informing the congregation that members of the religious order had taught him as a youth at St. John School, Collingswood. The bishop revealed the religious who had served as principal during that period was alive and living in the McAuley Care Center, which shared Mount Saint Mary’s hilltop campus.

“When I visit her, I get the shakes,” -

ence laughed. “I was called down to her

asked if I wanted to run the school.”The prelate reminded the young

women that they would be moving on to

Following the ceremony, as parents waited outside the chapel on the warm spring morning to meet family, friends and their graduate daughters, they shared their motivation for choosing a Catholic education.

Catherine Angela Gerlitz’s parents,

Tammy and Kevin, carried a bouquet of

cited “the Mercy values and knowing she would be educated to become a compas-sionate, loving woman of the world,” as the reason their daughter went to Mount Saint Mary Academy.

The smile on the face of Luis Rojas outshone the brilliant bouquet of Colom-

his daughter, Isabelle Rose. He noted, “It was not only for the education, the aca-demics, but for me the faith and strength of belief in God and that Jesus will al-

By Christina LeslieCorrespondent

SOUTH PLAINFIELD — “This time in your life it is more about ques-tions than answers. Keep one question above all others: what is our Lord asking of you? Your faith will be chal-lenged but remember the words of the Lord to his disciples: Do not be afraid. By your perseverance you will se-cure your lives.” That was the advice Bishop James F. Checchio shared with the Saint Joseph High School Class of 2018 at its graduation May 20.

The 155 members of the class were feted at a baccalaureate Mass and graduations ceremony in Sa-cred Heart Church. “Gentlemen, your time is now,” de-clared Principal Justin Fleetwood to the graduates of the Metuchen private preparatory school run by the Brothers of the Sacred Heart.

The class had four National Merit Finalists and six Na-tional Merit Com-mended Students; 94 percent of this year’s graduates earned scholarships in excess of the four-year tuition cost at Saint Joseph’s. The 155 young men have accrued more than $37.2 million in scholarship offers from colleges and universities across the country.

Sacred Heart Brother Louis Cou-villon, chaplain and director of campus ministry, presided at the Mass and gave the homily.

“If we would have shown [the students] that they were loved by God, special, have gifts, we would have been successful,” Brother Louis said to the staff and faculty.

Turning to address the green-robed graduates, he continued, “Chal-lenges can be embraced with the gift of your faith, and that is what we offer to you. To be compassionate, to serve your brothers and sisters: that is what you have been taught. You are ready to take your gifts, talents and blessings to a new venture.”

In his speech, valedictorian Devin Busono reminded fellow graduates that support of family, friends, faculty and the staff of their Catholic high school had supported them throughout their academic careers. That support

is integral in modern society, for it is riddled with negativity, noted Busono, who plans to pursue a degree in ma-rine biology at Rutgers University-New Brunswick.

Quoting the Roman poet Lucre-tius, the valedictorian continued, “‘We are, each of us, angels with only one wing, and we can only fly by embrac-ing one another.’

“Congratulate each of your broth-ers today. That kind of support helps us soar like falcons, makes us a com-munity, a brotherhood, echoing the charism of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart.”

Salutatorian Jason Manuel, who recalled his desire to enroll in Saint

Joseph High School began during the school’s “freshman for a day” program, declared his deci-sion was not solely based upon its stellar reputation as an aca-demic and athletic powerhouse, but instead based on the students and faculty therein.

Manuel said, “When we began as the Class of 2018, we were a blank slate… now it has become our masterpiece, a work of art. Each student has added a brush stroke.”

College would be another opportu-nity to create such a grand work, said Manuel, who plans to attend Brown University, Provi-dence, R.I., to study computer science and physics.

“In the words of Christ, ‘Let your light so shine among men that others can see your good works,’” Manuel concluded.

Bishop Checchio joined Fleet-wood, Gregory Brandao, president, and members of the St. Joseph fac-ulty in the awarding of the diplomas. At the reading of the last graduate’s name, the rafters of the church were rattled as family and friends filling the church’s pews erupted in applause and cheers.

Parents laden with bouquets of flowers, balloons with celebratory messages, cameras and smartphones reflected after the ceremony upon their reason to offer their sons a Catholic education.

Mary Lynn Salomon said she enrolled her son, Alec, at Saint Jo-seph High because of the institution’s

A total of 573 graduates in the Class of 2018 from the four Catholic high schools in the diocese earned more than $114 million in scholarships and awards, an increase of $21.5 million from last year.

Seniors who received the 2018 Bishop James F. Checchio Award for Religion are: Jude Roche of Bishop George Ahr High School, Edison; Leo James Melancon of Immaculata High School, Somerville; Cara Condodina of Mount Saint Mary Academy, Watchung; and Christian Consales of Saint Joseph High School, Metuchen.

Saint Joseph High School, held com-mencement exercises May 20 at the Church

uates of Immaculata High School, Somer-ville, received their diplomas, awards and honorable recognitions June 1, followed the next day by graduates of Bishop George Ahr High School, Edison, and Mount Saint Mary Academy, Watching.

Among the 231 graduating seniors at Bishop George Ahr High School, more than $46 million in scholarships and grants were awarded this year. Over four years, the Class of 2018 averaged nearly 272 hours of community service per student; and 98 per-cent of graduates will continue their studies at a college or university.

The diocese’s co-educational college preparatory school was founded in 1969 and is administered by two Franciscan Felician Sisters with a dedicated team of lay administration, faculty and staff, and a diocesan priest, who serves as the full-time Director of Catholic Identity at the school.

At Immaculata High School, gradu-ates earned more than $13.7 million in college scholarships. More than 90 percent of the 107 graduates were accepted to their

percent of the graduates received scholar-ships in excess of the four-year cost of at-tending the co-ed college preparatory high school staffed by the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHM). The school is also lead by a dedicated team of lay administration, faculty and staff, and a diocesan priest, who serves as the full-time Director of Catholic Identity.

At Saint Joseph High School, the 155 graduates cumulatively received more than $37.2 million in scholarships. The school had four National Merit Finalists and six National Merit Commended Students; and 94 percent of the graduates received schol-arships in excess of the four-year cost of attending the private Catholic all-boys col-lege preparatory school run by the Brothers of the Sacred Heart.

At Mount Saint Mary Academy, 89 percent of the 80 seniors were awarded $17.1 million in scholarships and grants; and 30 percent of the graduates received scholarships in excess of the four-year cost of attending the Catholic, private all-girls high school owned and operated by the Sis-ters of Mercy of the Mid-Atlantic.

Bishop Checchio, who participated in all four commencement ceremonies, said it brings him joy to attend the high school

graduations. He noted that the visits offer him the opportunity to personally thank those who contribute to the success of the schools, primarily the students, but also the administrators, boards, teachers, staff and generous benefactors.
