A MESSAGE FROM FR. JERRY Happy Father’s Day! Today we honor fathers! This celebration originated through the efforts of Sonora Louise Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington. She began a campaign for Father’s Day which was taken up by the Spokane Ministerial Association and the local YMCA. As a result Spokane had the first Father’s Day celebration on June 19, 1910. As the idea spread and grew in popularity it was supported by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916 and Calvin Coolidge in 1924. Finally, the third Sunday in June was adopted as the day for a national observance of Father’s Day in a Proclamation by President Lyndon Johnson in 1966 and established permanently in 1972 by President Richard Nixon. It is important to recognize fathers—they are the “head” of the family, even as the mother is the “heart” of a family, and both heart and head are needed in order to live! The lack of active fathers is a major problem for families and children today. Children who have active fathers have been shown to do much better than those without, and from a Christian perspective we know that our experience of earthly fathers has an affect on how we see our Father in Heaven. So thank Dad today, and honor your father. The Youth Conference in Denver winds up today for the 25 youth and 5 chaperones from our parishes. Please pray that this experience will remain in their hearts and minds for a long time, as well as that they have a safe return journey. Thanks again to all who supported them. They should arrive home Monday, 4-5 PM at St. Peter’s Hall. Fr. Ranek will be out of town Wednesday through Friday this week for a diocesan meeting, the final profession of Sr. Estela of the Heart of Mary, one of the Sisters of Perpetual Adoration in Sioux Falls, his parents’ 58 th wedding anniversary, and the Ordinations of Deacons Grant Lacey and Darin Schmidt to the Priesthood. GRIEVING THE LOSS

OF A LOVED ONE

The “Grieving the Loss of a Loved One” talk

we had last month, given by Dr. Marcie Moran

and her team from Sioux Falls, was very

beneficial to those who came, and the desire for

a day-long program was requested. We were

able to set the date for Sat. Aug. 1st from 10am-

3pm. It will be offered free of charge. Those

interested in attending the program are asked to

contact Michelle Skarnagel at the Catholic

Community Office 698-7414 to pre-register. A

quote of Dr. Moran’s touches on what we desire

for you and all those who experience the loss of

those they love: “Your experience of grief will

create a changed you, a you who has not only

survived but who has learned to thrive again in a

new way” So as St. John Paul II says, “Be not

afraid.” If you are drawn at all, or know of

others you love who could benefit, please come

with an open heart ready to discover the value

and transformation that grieving can bring to

make good come from difficulties in life. God

bless you. Sarah Grove
