The Indians of the Enchanted Valley

One autumn, in the valley, a great fire broke out and raged so violently that the

Indians of the tribe could not extinguish it. In desperation, they sent a request for

help to Man of Ice, a great man of magic who lived in the north. Man of Ice did

not answer with a prayer. Instead, he simply removed his crown of feathers from his

head, undid his long braids and shook his thick hair. The amazed messengers

noticed an unexpected breeze blow across his face. He shook his hair again and

it began to rain: the ; the rain changed to hailstones and then to snow.

The messengers returned to their valley where the fire was still burning. TheIndians stared helplessly at the fearful sight from the surrounding hills. They knew

what the messengers had seen but were afraid that their request had been made in vain.

A few days later, a strong wind blew up, but it served only to fan the flames still

further. The rain which followed only caused damp clouds of vapour to form: but

then the hail, which drove the Indians to find shelter far off put out the flames and,

finally, snow fell and covered even the ashes. Slowly the snow melted and when, at

the start of spring, the Indians returned to their home, they discovered a beautiful lake

    where the fire had raged.

    The Legend of King Midas

A long, long time ago there was a king of Phrygia who was very greedy and

stupid. One day Silenus, the god of the woods, who had been a guest of the king,

offered, in return for his hospitality, to grant him a wish. After thinking for a long time

about how he could become more rich and more powerful, Midas asked for a magic gift

that would turn anything he touched to gold.

    So be it, exclaimed Silenus.

Midas touched the seat he was sitting on and it immediately turned to solid

gold. He touched his belt, his clothes, a vase, a statue.... everything turned to

gold. He began to run about the palace, and everything he touched became gold:

walls, furniture, o rn am en ts .. ..Midas was delighted, but all the excitement had made him hungry, so he sat

down at the table and prepared to eat. Then he reali zed that every piece of food he

brought to his mouth was tu rning to gold before he could eat it. Thanks to his greed, it

looked as though he was going to die of hunger.

Fortunately, Silenus, who had foreseen what would happen, agreed to relieve

Midas of his magic power. And so, for a bunch of grapes, Midas gave up all the gold in

    the world.

    The Fox and The Cat

One day a cat and a fox were having a conversation. The fox, who was a conceitedcreature, boasted how clever she was. 'Why, I know at least a hundred tricks to getaway from our mutual enemies, the dogs,' she said.

'I know only one trick to get away from dogs,' said the cat. 'You should teach me someof yours!'

'Well, maybe some day, when I have the time, I may teach you a few of the simplerones,' replied the fox airily.

Just then they heard the barking of a pack of dogs in the distance. The barking grewlouder and louder - the dogs were coming in their direction! At once the cat ran tothe nearest tree and climbed into its branches, well out of reach of any dog. 'This isthe trick I told you about, the only one I know,' she called down to the fox. 'Whichone of your hundred tricks are you going to use?'

The fox sat silently under the tree, wondering which trick she should use. Before shecould make up her mind, the dogs arrived. They fell upon the fox and tore her to

    pieces.

A single plan that works is better than a hundred doubtful plans.
