    Americas Friendliest City

    WelcomeWelcome to Delphos!

Our city is located in Northwest Ohio along the US30 corridor. US30,previously known as Lincoln Highway, was the frst trans-continental high-way in the United States and helped Delphos prosper. The Miami-Erie Canalwas also instrumental in the development o Delphos and runs through theheart o our city.

The same work ethic and perseverance that it took to build the canal andthe Lincoln Highway is still evident in Delphos today.

Our oreathers worked in the ace o much adversity and many hardshipsto establish this wonderul place that we now call home. That is why we are

all very proud o Delphos and o our heritage. Our churches, schools, busi-nesses and organizations are second to none and stand as a testamentto our ounders. Whenever our citizens are called on to lend a hand, there isalways an abundance o volunteerism and good will toward many worthwhilecauses.

Delphos has also positioned itsel or uture progress with our new reser-voir and water treatment plant and our state-o-the-art membrane wastewater treatment plant. We invite you to learn more about our city, so please

call, e-mail, or visit our web site, and see why Delphos is known as AmericasFriendliest City.We look orward to meeting you!

Working together to advance business in the Delphos Area

History ...Delphos has the distinc-on of being situated in

wo counties. The Miamind Erie Canal divides itnto two nearly equal por-ons. The part east of thisanal lies in Allen County,

nd the part west is withinVan Wert County. In 1840, when the

first vote was taken inWashington Township, nly 10 votes were cast,

and Thomas W. Bowdlewas elected justice of thepeace.

The first plat of the townwas made by FerdinandBredeick, on the west sideof the canal, and the Rev.

John Otto Bredeick, com-ing a couple of years later, laid out the addition on theeast side of the canal. Johnwas a Roman Catholicpriest, and reserved a large

plat of ground for churchpurposes. He gave this asa free gift.

For a number of yearsearly Delphos was knownas East Bredeick and WestBredeick. There were a

couple of other little settle-ments, which were knownrespectively as: SectionTen and Howard TownThe two former being set-tled by Germans and other

nd, after a meet-ng called for thaturpose, the name

Delphos was sug-gested by Fatherredeick, and it

was adopted. Fromhat time all jeal-

usy ceased, andll citizens began towork for the com-mon good. To this

    armonious actionmay be credited the

    growth of the set-tlement.

Delphos wasincorporated in1851, and the firstelection was heldon March 3 of that

year, at which Col.Lester Bliss waselected mayor, andSmith Talbott, recorder. N. White,

    J. P. Cowan, J. P. Murphy,

and TheodoreWrocklage werechosen the firstcouncilmen. Much of the

    growth may also

be attributed to theliberal views heldby Father Bredeick.Although broughtup under the nar-row, old coun-try standards, headopted in thebroadest and mostliberal mannerAmerican views, and encouragedthose of all nation-alities and all faiths

to settle there. Hewas ready to assistone as another, and

gave a plat to thePresbyterians onwhich to build a

church. He saidhe did not want aCatholic town, asthat would makethe people selfishand narrow. Hewanted all classesand all creeds tocommingle.

The post officeoccupied a smalroom built on aplatform of the lockbetween the gates

of the canal, on theVan Wert Countyside. Amos Clutterwas the postmasterin 1847. The firsthotel was opened

n the spring of 1845. It was builty Morgan Savage, and was named

Travelers Rest. The second was built byJames Graver,

n the sameyear, and wasalled the Ohio

    House.When the

    Ohio & IndianaRailroad, a

    art of theennsylvania

    C o m p a n y s

    main line,was built in

854, much o fhe iron for its construction was broughtown by the canal from Toledo. The Delphos & Indianapolis Railroad

was opened in 1875, and was com-leted to Toledo three years later. It is

ow known as the Toledo, St. Louis &Western Railroad. This was at first aarrow gauge railroad, but the track

was afterward standardized. To Father Bredeick was due the build-

ng up of the first Roman Catholic con-regation. He gave to it the splendid siteow occupied by the church edifice. A loghapel first served the small town, but a

more pretentious church was begun in846.In that same year, the Methodistseld their first services, in the cabin of

    R. M. Petticord, at which five personswere present. Rev John Graham offici-ted as minister. When E. N. Marlen,n ordained minister, came to Section

Ten in 1848, he facilitated the buildingf the church. A couple of years later the

foundation stone was laid. The Presbyterian Church was orga-

nized about the same time by RevRichard Graham. The congregation wasvery small, and a church edifice was notbegun for almost a score of years, as thecongregation had been decimated, firstby a scourge of cholera and afterward bythe Civil War.

Leslie Peltier wasorn on a small farmast of Delphos on Jan.

, 1900. Growing upn a farm surroundedy forests and bor-ered by the Auglaize

River, Leslie quicklycquired an apprecia-ion and love of naturend the natural world. His introduc-

ion to the night skyccurred at age five

when his motherntroduced him to the

Pleiades on a crisp, lear, winter night.

A book from a kindlybrarian brought theest of the universento focus and Lesliesuest for knowledge ofhe night sky took off.

As a teen Lesliearned $18 for a mailrder telescope byicking 900 quartsf strawberries on his

athers farm, earningwo cents per quart. The 2i refractorrrived a few weeksater and 64 contin-ous years of nightime observing began.

    Four years ofweeping the night

ky for comets finallyame to fruition on

    Friday, November13, 1925. Leslie came

upon a fuzzy some-thing in a cluster ofstars. He focused inon this somethingand saw it had thetrademark tail of acomet. Exhilarated,Leslie carefully plot-ted the locationand telephoned theDelphos telegram sta-tion. Finding it closedand his only optionthe signal tower atthe PennsylvaniaRailroad station,Leslie raced toward

Delphos in the darkon his bicycle. Thetelegram of his find tothe Harvard CollegeObservatory wasanswered a week laterwith the news thathe had, indeed, dis-covered a new comet.

    Merry Go RoundObservatory

In November1933 ,Leslie marriedDorothy Nihiser. The

Peltiers set up theirhousehold first inLeslies uncles houseand later in a smallhouse in Delphos. It was in 1937 thatLeslie used his skillas a designer at theDelphos Bending

Company to designand build his ground-

breaking Merry-Go-Round observatory. For the first timean entire observa-tory rotated to fol-

low the stars. Thisnew observatory fol-lowed the Peltiersto their new home,Brookhaven, in 1948.

In 1959, StanleyPeltier, Leslie andDotties youngestson, was a student at

    Miami University inOxford. During ren-

ovation the universi-tys observatory wasscheduled to be razed.Stanley convincedthe university that

his father could usethe observatory andits 12i refractor tele-scope. Within a fewmonths, the obser-vatory was erectedabout 100 yards northof the Peltier home

at Brookhaven. Forthe next 20 years theobservatory wouldscour the night skyand host thousands ofinterested stargazersand school children.

Leslie Peltier diedof a heart attack in

1980. His death wasmourned by all acrossthe astronomy world. His hometown ofDelphos honored hislife with a memorialsun dial, above, on the grounds of the public library, where heserved on the board formore than 30 years.
