Gabby and I truly enjoyed having an active role in the Festival. It was truly a blessing to see the joy the Festival brought to the families of St Joseph. Jesús, como Moisés que estuvo antes que él, corri-ge los malentendidos de los discípulos sobre el don del Espíritu. Vieron a personas, que no eran parte de su grupo, echar demonios y hacer otros milagros como Jesús había hecho. Jesús señala que nadie que hace milagros en su nombre puede luego hablar mal de él. Luego señala la importancia de la “gente sencilla”: los pobres, las personas sencillas, los niños, los humildes que no son importantes en el mundo. Es a ellos a quie-nes fue enviado, no a los ricos ni a los farisaicos. Jesús hace hincapié en la importancia de las pequeñas obras hechas con fe, de la misma manera que las grandes obras como echar a los demonios. “Todo aquél que les dé a beber un vaso de agua…por el hecho de que son de Cristo…les aseguro que no se quedará sin recom-pensa” (Marcos 9:41). Dios construye el Reino por venir poco a poco con nuestras acciones, sin importar que sean pequeñas o sencillas, si se las hace por amor a Dios y al prójimo.

NOT AGAINST US Like Moses before him, Jesus corrects his disci-ples’ misunderstanding of the gift of the Spirit. They saw people who were not of their company casting out demons and doing other works such as Jesus had done. Jesus points out that no one who does a good deed in his name can be opposed to him at the same time. He goes on to point out the importance of the “little ones,”: the poor, simple people, children, the meek ones who are not important in the world. It is to them that he was sent, not to the wealthy and the self-righteous. He underscores the importance of small works done in faith, as well as big works like driving out demons. “Anyone who gives you a cup of water . . . because you belong to Christ will surely not lose his reward” (Mark 9:41). God builds the coming reign little by little in our actions, however small and unas-suming, when they are done out of love of God and neighbor.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE En 1648 el franciscano Matías Abad llegó a la selva chocoana en la costa pacífica de Colombia. Allí, a pesar de los ataques indígenas en contra de los misioneros, pu-do celebrar la fiesta de san Francisco (4 de octubre). Al pasar de los años la devoción a san Francisco en Chocó se convirtió en una mezcla de la fe católica, las religiones africanas y la brujería. Este sincretismo es una forma de superstición que busca utilizar al santo en lugar de imitar-lo. Esta confianza en imágenes y estatuas es común y hasta peligrosa entre los latinoamericanos. Las hazañas de ciertas imágenes milagrosas llegan a proporciones exage-radas. Por ejemplo, la imagen de “san Pachito”, como lo llaman los chocoanos, se le atribuye haber apagado un incendio que amenazaba la población. La pusieron delan-te de las llamas y las apagó con su propio sudor. Hay que tener cuidado con la importancia de las imá-genes sagradas de nuestras tradiciones. En un descuido pueden convertirse en ídolos o amuletos en lugar del re-cuerdo de la presencia divina y el desafío de vivir en santidad.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION From its earliest days, the Church has had an interest in the education of young people. In ancient Rome, teach-ers of boys had to resign their posts in order to become catechumens, since the education of boys was so keyed to the lore and worship of the gods. In other ages, public education has been so attuned to other values that creative solutions have arisen. In late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Ireland, government schools had a goal of “Anglicizing” the Irish in culture and religion. Most Irish Catholics opted out in favor of “hedge schools.” In these largely secret schools, meeting not just in the shadow of hedges but also in cottages and barns throughout Ireland, schoolmasters provided eager stu-dents with a classical education grounded in Greek and Latin, Irish literature, the banned Gaelic language, and the catechism of the Church. The so-called penal laws forbade Catholics from teaching young people publicly or privately, and “civil disobedience” ruled the day. In 1826, a British government study showed that of half a million Irish chil-dren enrolled in schools, 403,000 were in hedge schools! A woman named Nano Nagle defied the law by opening schools for the poor. Eventually her companions became the Presentation Sisters. A layman named Edmund Rice, in-spired by her courage, founded the Irish Christian Brothers for the same purpose. By 1820, the situation eased, since Irish Catholics had shown that they would defy any law that diminished their love of learning and threatened their faith.

PASTOR’S DESK—ESCRITORIO DEL PASTOR

The first reading might be what Jesus was talking about when he scolded the disciples. They wanted to stop an exorcist whom they didn’t know. In both cases, whether prophesying or driving out demons, someone wanted them to stop. Why? Because the people doing those things were not members of the group. In the gospel, the disciples objected simply because they didn’t know the ones who were casting out demons. Back in Moses’ days, the two “renegades” were actually on the list, they just weren’t present with the rest gathered around Moses. Both Joshua and the disciples of Jesus thought they should control who could do God’s work and who couldn’t. It reminds me of the pastor sprinkling people with holy water during Easter season. If I didn’t feel the water, I was disappointed because I was “left out.” But Father was intending to bless everyone; he just couldn’t control where the holy water went. I wanted to control the pastor, to make him throw the water more carefully. The temptation to control things is pretty common, but we can’t be truly at peace until we allow God to be the one in control. God loves all people, even those who don’t know him. So if we see someone who has a spiritual gift, it could be God’s way of helping that person to know about His love. It might not be prophesying or driving out demons. There are many non-Christians who are very generous or patient or wise, who could come to faith if they realized that God was acting through them. You don’t have to bowl them over with evangelistic fervor. Just the observation that you see God’s love in them might get them thinking about their faith. The Apostles Creed reminds us that the Church is catholic, or universal. All are welcome, because Jesus died for everyone. As Moses said in the first reading, wouldn’t it be great if God sent his gifts of the Spirit to them all?

Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Vigésimo Sexto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario

La primera lectura podría ser de lo que Jesús estaba hablando cuando regañó a los discípulos. Querían detener a un exorcista a quien no conocían. En ambos casos, ya sea profetizando o expulsando demonios, alguien quería que se detuvieran. ¿Por qué? Porque las personas que hacen esas cosas no son miembros del grupo. Me recuerda al pastor que rocía gente con agua bendita durante la temporada de Pascua. Si no sentí el agua, me decepcionó porque me "dejaron afuera". Pero mi padre tenía la intención de bendecir a todos; él simplemente no podía controlar a dónde fue el agua bendita. Quería controlar al pastor, hacer que arrojara el agua con más cuidado. La tentación de controlar las cosas es bastante común, pero no podemos estar verdaderamente en paz hasta que permitamos que Dios sea el que tiene el control. Dios ama a todas las personas, incluso a aquellos que no lo conocen. Entonces, si vemos a alguien que tiene un don espiritual, podría ser la manera en que Dios ayuda a esa persona a conocer su amor. Puede que no sea profetizar o expulsar demonios. El Credo de los Apóstoles nos recuerda que la Iglesia es católica o universal. Todos son bienvenidos, porque Jesús murió por todos. Como dijo Moisés en la primera lectura, ¿no sería grandioso si Dios enviara sus dones del Espíritu a todos ellos?
