September 23, 2018 CÓMO TRATAMOS AL MENSAJERO

No debemos precipitarnos a definir quiénes son “los malvados” y quiénes (es decir nosotros) son los jus-tos. Tendemos a clasificar rápidamente a los demás co-mo malos, porque solemos considerarnos buenas perso-nas. No nos gusta que una voz profética nos critique con malas noticias sobre nuestro propio comportamiento. No nos gusta que nos reprochen que hemos transgredido la ley ni que nos acusen de no haber actuado acorde a nues-tra formación. Puede que condenemos e insultemos a quienes nos enfrentan a estas verdades sobre nosotros mismos, pero si fuéramos realmente buenos, les agradeceríamos por ayudarnos a permanecer en el camino correcto. Éste es el trato que le dieron a los profetas y el trato que le dieron a Jesús. ¿Es éste también el trato que les damos a las personas cuyos mensajes no nos gustan?

HOW DO WE TREAT THE MESSENGER? Let’s not be too hasty in defining who is “the wicked one” and who (namely us) is just! We are very quick to label others as evil, because we tend to label ourselves as good guys. We don’t like it when we are brought up short by a prophetic voice that brings us some bad news about our own behavior. We don’t like to be reproached for transgressions of the law or charged with violations of our training. We may condemn and abuse those who bring us up against these truths about ourselves when, if we were really good, we would thank them for helping to keep us on the right path. This is the way they treated the proph-ets and the way they treated Jesus. Is this also the way we treat those whose message we don’t like?

If you are donating food or coupons you may leave it in the marked area against the wall or drop it off at the rectory office and a food

pantry volunteer will pick it up.

Hospital Visits We want to remind you that if you or a member of your family is in the hospital and would like a visit,

please call the rectory. Due to privacy laws the hospital cannot contact the parish directly. We want to visit all who are sick and this is the only way we

can find out who is hospitalized.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Últimamente, hay mucho interés en los ángeles y so-bre todo en los arcángeles. Según el catecismo católico, los ángeles existen para glorificar y servir a Dios y para ayudar con el plan salvífico de Jesucristo, cooperando con nuestras buenas obras. Lamentablemente muchos, en es-pecial los de la New Age, se interesan sólo en los ángeles con el fin de utilizarlos en lugar de dejarse guiar por ellos. La Tradición ha designado una jerarquía de 9 rangos entre los seres espirituales. Los serafines son los primeros y más cercanos a Dios y los ángeles son los últimos y más cercanos a la humanidad. En esta jerarquía, los arcángeles son los penúltimos en poder, aunque sí son los más busca-dos por su responsabilidad de cuidar los cuatro puntos cardinales de la creación. Según la tradición hebrea, hay siete arcángeles (Tobías 12:15), de los cuales las Sagradas Escrituras sólo mencionan tres por nombre, Miguel (¿Quién como Dios?), Gabriel (hombre de Dios) y Rafael (Dios sana). De estos, Miguel parece ser el más popular gracias a su poder contra el mal.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION How long have there been parochial schools in the United States? Longer than you may imagine. The Jesuit fathers opened Saint Mary School in Philadelphia in 1782 in the first light of independence. Catholic and Protestant squabbles about the nature of education forced the Fathers to make this risky and innovative venture in the heart of the city. The school was closed by a devastating fire in 1902, but reopened in 1968 as St. Mary Interparochial School, the first example of a shared parochial school. It is also the only Catholic school within the confines of a national park. This is the “Mother School” of this uniquely American institution. Many parochial schools, especially in “national parishes,” were established to preserve the culture and lan-guage of the “old country,” and also to protect young peo-ple from prejudice. In other countries, Ireland for one, the Church is au-thorized to run national schools, sometimes under the spon-sorship of a parish. In still other places, such as Quebec, publicly-funded “separate schools” were administered by the Church. Wherever the state funds Catholic schools, normally enrollment is guaranteed to all applicants. The Quebec system was dismantled in 1998 when the state de-cided to reorganize schools along linguistic lines rather than religious affiliation. Parochial schools require consid-erable sacrifice, but they endure as a distinctive treasure of the Church in the United States.

PASTOR’S DESK—ESCRITORIO DEL PASTOR

St. James message of peace is as true now as it was two thousand years ago. Where else do wars and terrorism come from, than people holding on to wealth, power, or hatred? But the message James shares, and that of Jesus in the gospel, is a simple call to be different. Neither of them condemns anyone. They call us to look at what we really want and what truly brings happiness. Jesus’ disciples argued about who was greatest. Instead of slapping them down for their selfish pride, he looks at what they could be and calls them to a different attitude. To be truly happy, they must let go of pride and arrogance; they must learn that serving others is the only way to experience love and joy. We are no different today. We have to learn that having the latest gadget, the most expensive cell-phone, or the latest model car are at best temporary delights. And that being admired by acquaintances is never as lasting as loving someone for themselves. Jesus offers even more: the joy of being loved by God and helping others to know Him. Think about Jesus’ words to the disciples: He is the Son of God, yet he wants to lead us not just to himself, but to the Father. Can we learn to be more excited about what God has done for us than what we did to improve our home? Can we share our faith in God’s mercy instead of bragging about our golf or bowling scores? Are we more interested in impressing members of the opposite sex, or treating all people with respect? St. James ends our second reading with a challenging statement: He says we ask but don’t receive because we ask wrongly. How often do we desire things that won’t really make us happy? Do we pray for things we don’t really need? Would we ask God to punish those who hurt us, or to help us forgive them? Let us ask God to show us his love and to help those around us to experience it too.

Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Vigésimo Quinto Domingo del Tiempo

El mensaje de paz de Santiago es tan cierto ahora como lo fue hace dos mil años. ¿Dónde más vienen las guerras y el terrorismo?de, que las personas que se aferran a la riqueza, el poder o el odio?Pero el mensaje que Santiago comparte, y el de Jesús en el evangelio, es un simple llamado a ser diferente. Ninguno de ellos condena a na-die. Nos llaman a mirar lo que realmente queremos y lo que realmente nos trae felicidad. Los discípulos de Jesús discutieron sobre quién era el más grande. En lugar de abofetearlos por su orgullo egoísta, mira lo que podrían ser y los llama a una actitud diferente. Para ser verdaderamente felices, deben dejar de lado el orgullo y la arrogancia; deben aprender que servir a los demás es la única forma de experimentar amor y alegría. No somos diferentes hoy Tenemos que aprender que teniendo el último gadget, el teléfono celular más caro o el ultimo modelo de coche son en el mejor de los placeres temporales. Y ese ser admirado por conocidos nunca es tan duradero como amar a alguien por sí mismos. Jesús ofrece aún más: la alegría de ser amado por Dios y ayudar a otros a conocerlo.Piensa en las palabras de Jesús a los discípulos: Él es el Hijo de Dios, pero no quiere llevarnos solo a sí mismo, sino al Padre. ¿Podemos aprender a estar más entusiasmados con lo que Dios ha hecho por nosotros de lo que hicimos para mejorar nuestro hogar? ¿Podemos compartir nuestra fe en la misericordia de Dios en lugar de jactarnos de nuestros puntajes de golf o bolos? ¿Estamos más intere-sados en impresionar a los miembros del sexo opuesto o en tratar a todas las personas con respeto? Santiago finaliza nuestra segunda lectura con una de-claración desafiante: dice que preguntamos pero no reci-bimos porque preguntamos incorrectamente. ¿Con qué frecuencia deseamos cosas que en realidad no nos harán felices? ¿Oramos por cosas que realmente no necesita-mos? ¿Le pedimos a Dios que castigue a los que nos hieren o que nos ayude a perdonarlos? Pidamos a Dios que nos muestre su amor y que ayude a quienes nos rodean a experimentarlo también.
