Vol. 20 No. 10 November 2018
GIVING TUESDAY: November 27th
O come, let us sing to the Lord; let us make a joyful noise to the rock
of our salvation! Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let
us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise! ~ Psalm 95:1-2
You’ve probably heard by now the buzz about #GivingTuesday and
may be asking “What is this day all about?” #GivingTuesday started
in 2012 and is observed on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving,
Black Friday, and Cyber Monday. More than just a day on the calendar, #GivingTuesday is a movement that
inspires giving back in contrast to Black Friday and Cyber Monday that promote consumption of all things
holiday related. It is often referred to as the opening day of the holiday giving season.
Last year, more than 85,000 organizations in 98 countries came together to celebrate #GivingTuesday. More
than $177 million dollars were raised online with an average gift size of $107.69. This global initiative has
transformed the holidays with hope. It has inspired giving around the world, resulting in greater donations,
volunteer hours, and activities that have brought about real change in communities. Businesses, charities, and
families promote this as a day to give back.
Please, won’t you consider a special year-end gift to the church this year? We have a new FPC Legacy
Endowment Fund. As this fund grows, the interest is used for mission and operating costs, while the principal
continues to grow and provide financial security for us and the generations that follow. Be sure to contact our
Treasurer, Bob Weinburger, if you would like to make a donation to our endowment fund.
If you don’t want to give a gift directly to the church, consider one of the many ministries we support, including
Active Faith, Capernaum Health Clinic, Kids Hope (USA), Sparrow Freedom Project, Safe House Ann Arbor,
Second Mile Center of Detroit, Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, and more. As always, we thank you for your
generosity during this month of gratitude and giving.

lots of fun! We will again include a free Friday night on the 9th from 6:00 to 10:00 for

ALL CHURCH WORKDAY
Saturday, November 3 - 9:00 a.m.-noon
Our fall clean up is scheduled for Saturdays,
November 3rd and 17th from 9:00 a.m. to noon. Isn’t it
true that our yard/s never clean themselves up! We
need help. Even if you can spare an hour or two, it
makes a big difference in the amount of work we can
accomplish as a team. Bring your rakes, tarps, and
blowers and we’ll get the leaves cleaned up in no time.
You know that famous quote, “Many hands make light
work.” That couldn’t be more true in this case. Please plan to help out. Thank you in advance.
SPARROW FREEDOM PROJECT
The Sparrow Freedom Project (SFP) is a
non-profit organization that fights against hu-
man trafficking in our community and around
the world.
The SFP is putting on a training event on 10
November 2018 from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
for anyone that would like to learn more about the organization
or would like to become a volunteer.
The SFP continues to be grateful for the use of the office space
in our Christian Education wing. And we are happy to provide
it.

GRIEF SUPPORT GROUP
In a culture that often avoids talking about loss, support groups give you
the opportunity to share your story openly and guilt-free. You also have
the opportunity to hear the stories of others and talk about coping day-to-
day, as well as on the most difficult days of our grief journeys.
Please join our Grief Support Group which meets on the third Monday of
the month.
Our next meeting is Monday, November 19th at 10:00 a.m. at Corner
Caffe’ here in South Lyon. We hope you have a chance to join us.
Please join us on Saturday, November 24th
at 10:00 a.m. as we decorate the church for
Advent and in preparation for the Christmas
season. There are greens to hang, trees to
decorate and the Crèche needs to re-
assembled and placed on the chancel. All are
welcome to come and help.
Afterward, we’ll enjoy lunch at Lake Street
Tavern.
Our Kids’ Connection class is giving back to
our community with their first Mission Pro-
ject of the school year.
During the month of November, the children
will be making cards, and filling “goody
bags” for our Police and Fire Departments as
a show of gratitude for all they do to keep us
safe.
You can help us by providing homemade
chocolate chip cookies and a few bags of
wrapped candy to fill the bags. Look for the
sign up sheet on the board outside the sanctu-
ary.
The bags will be delivered by the children on
Sunday, 25 November.
Just in time for the holidays! Join the Sunday Supper & Study this Advent season as we study
“The Redemption of Scrooge.” We’ll take a deeper look at Charles Dickens’ Ebenezer
Scrooge and his encounter with the ghost of Christmas Past, Present, and Future.
The study begins Sunday, 25 November and will continue through Sunday, 16 December.
Supper is at 6:00 p.m. and the study follows. We’ll wrap up by 7:30 p.m. Be sure to sign up.
Books are $10.

Mission & Outreach
Abbey Park Festival of Trees: Joyce Johnson and Dorothy Tennant have generously agreed to decorate our tree this year. The prize money won will be donated to the Sparrow Freedom Project, which supports those caught in human trafficking. To celebrate the tenth anniversary of this event, Abbey Park is donating an extra $1,000 to the winning tree. Decorating starts on November 23. Tickets are available in the office at Abbey Park for $1. The People’s Choice Award will be decided at noon December 16; but, voting continues through 5pm December 27. The grand winner will be announced December 28 on the Abbey Park facebook page.
Active Faith: We are collecting Macaroni & Cheese in November. Thank you to everyone for the generous contributions so far this year.
American Red Cross: Our next blood drive will be January 22, so eat your apricots.
Capernaum Health Clinic: The clinic will be at First United Methodist Church on Pontiac Trail the week of November 5-7. FPC to provide lunch to clinic on Wednesday, November 7th.
Peace & Global Witness Offering: We collected $469, of which $117.25 has been sent to Safe House Ann Arbor.
Everyone Eats (E1E): On October 17, Jefferson Avenue PC(USA) took a turn cooking. Their spaghetti meal served 106 and was enjoyed by all. The November meal is on the 21st and will be the Thanksgiving dinner. If you would like to go, gathering time is 9am, return is 2pm.
So, Anne’s plan for Stone Soup did not work; she only got the stone she brought. Maybe we try this experiment another time.
Kids Hope USA (KHUSA): Mentoring has begun for this school year; but, if you are inter-ested in guiding a young person, there is always one in need of adult support. Prayer partners as well as mentors are needed. Contact Bob Cue for more information. Please consider joining. We plant the seeds, never knowing the harvest but trusting God.
We are collecting Box Tops for Education, Labels for Education, Campbell Soup labels, and Aunt Millie’s bread labels. If you are not donating these to other projects, we would be grateful to receive them. Place them in the receptacle by the M&O bulletin board.
Future Events:
Friendsgiving: Postponed—Watch for new details.
Cool Yule: 1 December. M&O will staff the Fair Trade booth.
Blood Drive: 22 January. Please donate.
Mission & Outreach: Committee meets on the third Tuesday of the month at 10:30am in the Library. Anyone interested in using their talents and influ-ence, please join us, no RSVP needed.
