MINERAL PRODUCTION OF ILLINOIS IN 1905.

(By F. B. Van Horn.)

It has long been customary to think of Illinois as essentially an agricnltural state, aud indeed it deserves front rank in output of food stuffs. · In manufacturing it is hardly less important, while its rapidly growing mining industry seems destined ultimately to also give it high rank. In the following tables the mineral output for 1905 is

. . summarized by counties and subjects. The figures are for the calendar year and are based upon statistics collected in co-operation with the lfnited States Geological Survey. When not otherwise stated, the short ton, 2,000 pounds, is used in these tables.

'l'he grand total here given, !.1.early $59,000,000.00, is below the real value of the output of the State. This is the first year that the State

· Survey has undertaken to collect these figures, and probably a number of tho producers were missed. It is believed that the later returns

, will not greatly alter these figures, since the plants not yet heard from ·

·are mainly small. There are, however, a number of minor products for which no figures were collected. These include natural gas, silica; barytos, lend ore, zinc ore, pyrite, pigments, and probably others. Another year it is hoped to include them.

In comparing these figures with those of other states it is to be remembered that the values given are at the place of production and that no attempt has been made to include metals or materials produced from ores mined outside the State. If the output of the iron and steel furnaces of the Chicago district, the zinc furnaces of the Illinois valley' and the St. Louis district and the lead furnaces at Alton were to ·.

be included the total would be very much larger. Tho year marked an important advance for Illinois in the pro

duction of mineral wealth . The total production reported for 1905 aggr<>gates $58,858,296.00. In 1904 the total value was $59,400,829.00. Of tho latter, however, $3,000,000.00 was for mineral water used for city supply, and should not be included. Deducting this amount leavPs the actual value for l904 , $56,400,829.00. This gives an increase for rno5 of $2,457,467.00.

COAL.

Thn coal measure rocks cover approximately 40,000 square miles of Illinois, and coal stands foremost among the mineral resources of the State. It will demand much attention from the Survey. The character and composition of Illinois coal are discussed in Bulletin No. 3, now in press.

During the year 1905, 30 producers reported an output of HS,081,-674 short tons, valued at $39,755,071.00, showing an increase over 1904

Page 3: 111 111 1. .. ) F. B. VAN HORN.library.isgs.illinois.edu/Pubs/pdfs/circulars/c0001-1906.pdf · of2,606,614 tons, but a deoreasti in value of $186,922.00. For the fis cal year ending

of2,606,614 tons, but a deoreasti in value of $186,922.00. For the fiscal year ending June 30, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports 37,183,374 short tons, valued at $38,689,858.00, which compared with. 1904 s hows an increase in quantity of 105,477 tons, and a decrease iu value of $2,084,364.00. These figures are of interest as showing an average reduction of 51 cents per ton on the entire output of the State for the fiscal year. ·

Most of the coal came from the central and southern fields, comprising the fifth, sixth and seventh districts. Sangamon county, the largest producer in the State, furnished 4,696,363 tons, or 55 per ce11t of the total tonnage of the fifth district. Macoupin county was ·

second, with an outpYt of 3,214,473 tons. Ln the sixth district St. Clair county mined :3,611,161 tons, and Madison county 3,179,762 tons.

' Williamson county with 3,927,010 tons, and Perry county with l,38;\-291 tons, were the largest producers in the seventh district. In tho fourth district Vermilion was the. only county to pass the million mark, mining 2,291 ,266 tons. LaSalle and Grundy, of the first district, with 1,730,438 and 1,311,54 tons respectively, Bureau of tho second district, with 1,699,268 tons, and Fulton of the third district with 1,519,049 t0J1s, were other counties produciing over a mi.llion tons each.

The following table gives the tonnage and value, by counties, of' Illinois coal mined in 1905, with the production of the fiscal year ending June 30 taken from the report of the Bureau of Labor Statisties and published by the courtesy of Mr. David Ross, secretary. Where there are less than three producers in a county, the output is combined .vith some other in order not to disclose the operations of an individual establishment.

STONE.

Limestone-Illinois ranks next to Pennsylvania as a limestone producer. Twenty-seven counties furnish limestone, and 186 producers reported an output for 1905 valued at $3,641 ,41.9.00, as compared with $3,206,271.00 in l\J04. Broken stone, which comprises stone for concrete, flux, railroad ballast, rubble, riprap and stone quarried for cement, made up over 50 per cent of the total value. Cook county was the heaviest producer of all kinds of limestone, the output aggregating $1,\:.1%,942.00, or 54 per cent of the total for the State.

The following tables give the production of limestone by counties. and the uses for which it was quarried , for the year 11)05:

Sandstone-The production of sandstone reported for 1!:!05 fell below that of Hl04, being $29,15B.00 as· against $47,377.00. Ten counties, Alexander, Brown, Carroll, Clay, Fulton, Henry; Jackson, Lee, McHenry and Union, produced sandstone, but since no one of these had more than two producers, it is impracticable to give figures for each county separately. The total production and uses to which the sand.

555.00 in 1905, as compared with $113,000.00 in 1904. There are four concerns manufacturing Portland cement only, three manufacturing natural rock cement only, and one making both Portland and slag cement. The output of slag cement is included with the figures for the natural rock cement. A new Portland cement plant is b1ing erected at Dixon, and others are in contemplation.

FLUORSPAR.

Mr. E. C. Hovey, of the United States Geological Survey, gives the production of fluorspar for 1905 in Illinois at 33,275 tons valued at $220,206.00, nearly double the amount reported for 1904, which was 17,205 tons, with a value of $122,172.00. All the fluorspar comes from Pope and Hardin counties, the principal production coming from Rosiclare.

OIL AND GAS.

Oil and gas have been produced in Montgomery and Randolph counties, Illinois, for a number of years, but only in sufficient qnantity for home consumption. In 1905 important discoveries were made in a number of counties of the State: The oil and gas industries of the State have been described recently in a report written by -w. S. Blatchley and others and forming Bulletin No. 2, issued by the , Survey.

Oil-The discovery of oil in eastern Illinois near Casey, Clark · county, gave a new impetus to the industry. The field was quite rapi<lly

developed, and brought a great influx of prospectors, causing a large amount of wild-catting, which resulted in the finding of productive territory in Crawford, Cumberland, Coles and Lawrence counties. Oil has also been found in Sparta, in Randolph county, and near Iola, in Olay county, and development is progressing rapidly. A slight showing of oil has been reported from Pike county.

The production of oil in 1905 is shown in the following table, pnblished by the courtesy of J. N. McDonald, Auditor, Standard Oil Company of Illinois :

The increase was very rapid from June to December, and since that titne it has been even more rapid, the production for the first f-; i x mouths of 1906 being more than double the amount for the preceding half year. The oil sold for approximately 81 cents per barrel.

Gas-Montgomery nnd Randolph counties have produced gas in ).:radnally lessening quantities for a number of years, but the recent d iscovery of oil in the eastern part of the State has caused renewed i nterest nnd prospecting is being carried on vigorously. Gas also has be(ll found in Saline, Lawrence and other southern counties, but the main prospecting is for oil. Pittsfield, Pike county, is the scene at present of considerable activity in prospecting for gas. About twenty years ago gas was found in drilling for water and was used locally. 1 n 1905 prospecting became general, and since then thirty wells have been put down, all but six of which yield sufficient gas for home use.

MINERAL WAT.ER.

'rhe list of mineral springs reporting for 1905 numbers fifteen. Of these only ten report sales, amounting to $44,H05.00. In HJ04, accordi ug to the report of the U. S. Geological Survey, twenty-one springs were heard from, and fourteen of these reported sales aggregating :3:1,038,096.00. Of this amount $3,000,000.00 was for city supply and should not have been reported with mineral water statistics Thus, i.he production for 1905 exceeded that for l!:l04 by $6,800.00.

ZINO,

Illinois · produced 4G,H06 short tons of spolter in 1905 , but only a small portion of this came from zinc ores mined in the State. The plants at Peru and LaSalle were the principal producers, but that at 8andoval was also in operation. The Wenona plant was in operation during only part of 1905. A new plant is about to open at De Pue, nnd one is now building at Danville. The prospect for a large in-crease in production in 1906 is excellent. No zinc oxide is now man-ufactured in the State. '

LEAD,

A small amount of lead ore is mined in northwestern Illinois, and a little of it is reduced in a local furnace near Galena. In 1 905, approximately 600 tons of lead ore, having an average value of $80.00, wore produced. The hulk of the lead smelted in the State comes from Alton, where the Federal Lead Company has a large mbdern ·

plant. It is run mainly on ores from Missouri, particularly the southwestern part of the state. . Since there is only one producer, it is impracticable to give the output for Illinois separately.

SAND.

Figures of production of glass, moulding, furnace and other sands in 1905 are not yet available. In 1904 the value was $689,740.00. ri1he principal source of the supply of glass sand is the Illinois river valley in LaSalle county. In 1904 Illinois .ranked second among the sand-producing states.

Silica, mainly used for pigment and wood filler, is being produced in Union county. There are at present four concerns mining silica; and a new company has recently been organized at Anna.

SUMMARY. ' r Following is a summary table showing the value of tho various

natural resources of the State produced in 1U05, for which figures are available. If gas , silica, zinc and other minor materials were II1cludod, the grand total would undoubtedly be considerably increased.
