Memorization Verses: Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.What does this mean? The good and gracious will of God is done even without our prayer, but we pray in this petition that it may be done among us also.How is God's will done? God's will is done when He breaks and hinders every evil plan and purpose of the devil, the world, and our sinful nature, which do not want us to hallow God's name or let His kingdom come; and when He strengthens and keeps us firm in His Word and faith until we die. This is His good and gracious will.

Thy Will Be DoneOne player takes the role of 'Simon' and issues instructions, (usually physical actions such as 'jump in the air' or 'stick out your tongue') to the other players, which should only be followed if prefaced with the phrase 'Simon says', for example 'Simon says jump in the air'. Players are eliminated from the game by either following instructions that are not immediately preceded by the trigger phrase or by failing to follow an instruction which does include 'Simon says'.A command starting with "Simon says" means the players must obey that command. A command without the beginning "Simon says" means do not do this action. Anyone who breaks one of these two rules is eliminated from the remainder of the game. It is also often played that anyone who talks is eliminated.There can be very complex and difficult command chains, such as "Simon says: Arms up. Simon says: Arms down. Arms up." Anyone ending with their arms up is eliminated, because you can not obey a command without beginning with "Simon says".It is considered cheating to give impossible commands ("Simon says 'lift both of your legs up and keep them there!'.") or phrase the commands in such a way that the other player has no option but to 'go out' ("Simon says 'jump up'. Come down."). However, at least in some versions, it is allowed for Simon to eliminate players by asking them to do something seemingly unrelated to the game (example: "Anyone remaining join me up here.")

 Thus far we have prayed that God's name be honored by us, and that His kingdom prevail among us; in which two points is comprehended all that pertains to the honor of God and to our salvation, that we receive as our own God and all His riches. But now a need just as great arises, namely, that we firmly keep them, and do not suffer ourselves to be torn therefrom. For as in a good government it is not only necessary that there be those who build and govern well, but also those who make defense, afford protection and maintain it firmly, so here likewise, although we have prayed for the greatest need, for the Gospel, faith, and the Holy Ghost, that He may govern us and redeem us from the power of the devil, we must also pray that His will be done. For there will

be happenings quite strange if we are to abide therein, as we shall have to suffer many thrusts and blows on that account from everything that ventures to oppose and prevent the fulfilment of the two petitions that precede.

For no one believes how the devil opposes and resists them, and cannot suffer that any one teach or believe aright. If we would be Christians, therefore, we must surely expect and reckon upon having the devil with all his angels and the world as our enemies, who will bring every possible misfortune and grief upon us. For where the Word of God is preached, accepted, or believed, and produces fruit, there the holy cross cannot be wanting. And let no one think that he shall have peace; but he must risk what whatever he has upon earth -- possessions, honor. house and estate, wife and children, body and life. Now, this hurts our flesh and the old Adam; for the test is to be steadfast and to suffer with patience in whatever way we are assailed, and to let go whatever is taken from us.

Hence there is just as great need, as in all the others, that we pray without ceasing: "Dear Father, Thy will be done, not the will of the devil and of our enemies, nor of anything that would persecute and suppress Thy holy Word or hinder Thy kingdom; and grant that we may bear with patience and overcome whatever is to be endured on that account, lest our poor flesh yield or fall away from weakness or sluggishness.“

Behold, thus we have in these three petitions, in the simplest manner, the need which relates to God Himself, yet all for our sakes. For whatever we pray concerns only us, namely, as we have said, that what must be done anyway without us, may also be done in us. For as His name must be hallowed and His

kingdom come without our prayer, so also His will must be done and succeed although the devil with all his adherents raise a great tumult, are angry and rage against it, and undertake to exterminate the Gospel utterly. But for our own sakes we must pray that even against their fury His will be done without hindrance also among us, that they may not be able to accomplish anything and we remain firm against all violence and persecution, and submit to such will of God.

Such prayer, then, is to be our protection and defense now, is to repel and put down all that the devil, Pope, bishops, tyrants, and heretics can do against our Gospel. Let them all rage and attempt their utmost, and deliberate and resolve how they may suppress and exterminate us, that their will and counsel may prevail: over and against this one or two Christians with this petition alone shall be our wall against which they shall run and dash themselves to pieces. This consolation and confidence we have, that the will and purpose of the devil and of all our enemies shall and must fail and come to naught, however proud, secure, and powerful they know themselves to be. For if their will were not broken and hindered, the kingdom of God could not abide on earth nor His name be hallowed.

What is the good and gracious will of God? It is God's will that His name be kept holy and that His kingdom come, that is, that His Word be taught correctly and that sinners be brought to faith in Christ and lead godly lives.

. The three meanings of the will of God:(a) Sovereign decretive will, the will by which

God brings to pass whatsoever He decrees. This is hidden to us until it happens or is told to us.

(b) Preceptive will is God's revealed law or commandments, which we have the power but not the right to break.

(c) Will of disposition describes God's attitude or disposition. It reveals what is pleasing to Him.

Whose will and plans are opposed to the will of God? The devil, the world, and our own sinful nature oppose the good and gracious will of God.

 1 Peter 5:8 Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.

 1 John 2:15-17 Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For everything in the world-the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does--comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever.

 Rom. 7:18 1 know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.

Bible narratives: The devil misled humanity to sin (Gen 3:1-7). The enemies of Jesus

brought about the fall of Peter (Luke 22:54-62). Achan's sinful nature led him to steal (Joshua 7:18-22).

• Pray: Dear God, I am Your creature. You

have sent me a cross and suffering and say to me: Suffer a little for My sake and I will reward you well. Dear God, because it is Your will I will gladly suffer. Amen. (Luther).

T Good and Gracious Will

LP. 3rd P. Will Be Done: Why Pray at All?

Martin Luther reflecting on this part of the prayer suggested that God’s will is done if we pray or even if we don’t pray.  So why bother to pray?  One reason, Luther argues, is that we pray in

order that God’s will “may be done also among us.” 

In this sense when we pray “your will be done” we ask for our active involvement in the working out of God’s purposes.

What the prayer is not: “Sure God, do what you need to do, I won’t get in the way,”This prayer doesn’t just mean passive agreement

to God’s ways, but rather humble acknowledgment that God’s purposes are worked out amidst our active involvement.

Why do we pray that the will of God be done? We know that the will of God will always be done, but we want God's good and gracious will to be done in our lives.

 "As God's name must be hallowed and His kingdom must come even without our prayer, so must His will be done and prevail even though the devil and all his host storm and rage furiously against it in their at utterly to exterminate the Gospel. But for our own sake we must pray that His will may be done among us without hindrance, in spite of their fury, so that they may accomplish nothing and we may remain steadfast" (Large Catechism 11168).

How is God's will done in our lives? God's will is done when

 A. He breaks and hinders the plans of the devil, the world, and our sinful nature, which try to destroy our faith in Christ Jesus;

 Rom. 16:20 The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus be with you.

2 Tim. 1:12 1 know whom I have believed, and am convinced that He is able to guard what I have en trusted to Him for that day.

B. He strengthens and keeps us firm in His Word and faith and helps us lead God-pleasing lives;

 1 Peter 1:5 [You] through faith are shielded by God's power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.

Ps. 119:35 Direct me in the path of Your commands, for there I find delight.

 C. He supports us in all our troubles until we die.

 Rom. 8:28 We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who

have been called according to His purpose.  2 Cor. 12:9 He said to me, "My grace is

sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness."

Bible narratives: God hindered the evil will of Joseph's brothers and kept him faithful (Gen. 50:15-21). God would not let the devil destroy Job (Job 1:1-2:6).

• Pray: Grant that I may always desire what is

most acceptable and most dear to You. Let Your will be mine, and let my will ever follow Yours, and agree perfectly with it. Grant that I may die to all things that are in the world, and for Your sake love to be condemned, and not known in this generation. Grant to me above all things that can be desired, to rest in You, and in You to have my heart and peace. You are the true peace of the heart, You its only rest. Amen. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.What does this mean? The good and gracious will of God is done even without our prayer, but we pray in this petition that it may be done among us also.How is God's will done? God's will is done when He breaks and hinders every evil plan and purpose of the devil, the world, and our sinful nature, which do not want us to hallow God's name or let His kingdom come; and when He strengthens and keeps us firm in His Word and faith until we die. This is His good and gracious will.It is God's will that His name be kept holy and that His kingdom come, that is, that His Word be taught correctly and that sinners be brought to faith in Christ
