Exodus 20:12 NIV
Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.
People are at the heart of God's ethic
5th Command is 1st Rule of Justice
Exodus 20:12 NIV Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.
Deuteronomy 16:20 NIV Follow justice and justice alone, so that you may live and possess the land the LORD your God is giving you.
God’s Imperative is Justice
Amos 2:6-7 NIVThis is what the LORD says: "For three sins of Israel, even for four, I will not turn back my wrath. They sell the righteous for silver, and the needy for a pair of sandals. They trample on the heads of the poor as upon the dust of the ground and deny justice to the oppressed. Father and son use the same girl and so profane my holy name.
Micah 6:6-8 NIVWith what shall I come before the LORD and bow down before the exalted God? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old? Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousand rivers of oil? Shall I offer my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?
Micah 6:6-8 NIVHe has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.

Deuteronomy 21:18-21 NIVIf a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who does not obey his father and mother and will not listen to them when they discipline him, his father and mother shall take hold of him and bring him to the elders at the gate of his town. They shall say to the elders, "This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious. He will not obey us. He is a profligate and a drunkard."
Deuteronomy 21:18-21 NIVThen all the men of his town shall stone him to death. You must purge the evil from among you. All Israel will hear of it and be afraid.
How to Honor Parents?
We honor our parents when we respect their role
Psalms 78:5-7 NIVHe decreed statutes for Jacob and established the law in Israel, which he commanded our forefathers to teach their children, so the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children. Then they would put their trust in God and would not forget his deeds but would keep his commands.
We honor our parents when we heed their instruction
Colossians 3:20-21 NIV
Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord. Fathers, do not embitter your children, or they will become discouraged.
Ephesians 6:1-4 NIVChildren, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. "Honor your father and mother"--which is the first commandment with a promise-- "that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth." Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.
We honor our parents when we meet their needs
1 Timothy 5:3-4 NIV
Give proper recognition to those widows who are really in need. But if a widow has children or grandchildren, these should learn first of all to put their religion into practice by caring for their own family and so repaying their parents and grandparents, for this is pleasing to God.
Proverbs 19:26 NIV
He who robs his father and drives out his mother is a son who brings shame and disgrace.
Mark 7:9-13 NIVAnd he said to them: "You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe your own traditions! For Moses said, 'Honor your father and your mother,' and, 'Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.'
Mark 7:9-13 NIVBut you say that if a man says to his father or mother: 'Whatever help you might otherwise have received from me is Corban' (that is, a gift devoted to God), then you no longer let him do anything for his father or mother. Thus you nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many things like that."
A Word to Parents
Deuteronomy 6:4-7 NIVHear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.
