Summer series on Mass Parts, #4 Preparing the Chalice Peace be with you, Last me I men oned the symbolic drop of water which the priest or the deacon places in the Chalice. This me I will follow up on that with three things about the prepara on of the Precious Blood

Wine from Grapes - Canon Law requires “The wine must be natural from the fruit of the vine and not spoiled (Can. 924).” The GIRM #322 adds “The wine for the Eucharist must be from the fruit of the grapevine (cf. Lk 22:18), natural, and unadulterated, that is without admixture of extraneous substances.” Other than that, it is not valid (i.e. it does not become the Precious Blood). So, we do not use grape juice or wine with addi ves because Jesus did not. Priests who suffer with alcoholism can get special permission to use “mustum” which is the unfermented juice of ripe grapes. When grapes are on the verge of becoming alcohol, the process is stopped. The priest would consume mustum in these special circumstances, but the people would receive from a separate chalice with Precious Blood from wine.

The Drop of Water - As I men oned in my last column, the drop of water that the priest or deacon places in the Chalice is symbolic and does not affect the validity (unless the amount of water is greater than the amount of wine). The historic reason was one of prac cality. In the early Church the wine of the day was so thick that it would be diluted with water. So, a waiter would “prepare the wine” for the table by adding the right amount of water for the meal. Since the Church uses wine as Jesus did, the wine for the Eucharist would also be prepared. As the years went by, common wine no longer had to be prepared in this way but adding the water con nued to be in the ritual. With that, two symbolic reasons became part of our history. The first is that it reminds us of the sacrifice of Jesus upon the cross because when His side was pierced, blood and water flowed from His side. The second is that it speaks to the divinity and humanity of Jesus Christ. In fact, the words the priest or deacon silently says as he prepares the Chalice are, “By the mystery of this water and wine may we come to share in the divinity of Christ who humbled himself to share in our humanity.”

The Par cle of the Host - At every Mass, the priest adds a piece of the consecrated Host to the consecrated Precious Blood. The words he says as he does this are, “May this mingling of the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ bring eternal life to us who receive it.” But this too is a symbolic allegorical meaning that developed from a different original meaning. The origin has to do with the Church in Rome during the early days of our Church. The Pope is the Bishop of the Diocese of Rome and when the Pope would celebrate the Mass on Sunday, the priests from the various communi es of Rome would come and celebrate with him. The prac ce began with the priests taking some of the Consecrated Host from the altar of their bishop and bringing that to their communi es. They then would add the Host from the Pope’s Mass to their own consecrated Hosts a er the consecra on to show their unity with their bishop. So, the original meaning is about how each of our Masses are in communion with our Bishop who in our Archdiocese is Cardinal Seán O’Malley. When the liturgical books from Rome were shared with other parts of the world this gesture was s ll there, but priests were no longer able to be with the Pope for Mass. So eventually this symbolic ac on took on new meaning and the words we use today were added as the priest takes a piece of the Consecrated Host and adds that to the Chalice. The prayer used now reminds us that the Communion we receive is intended towards bringing us to eternal life with God in Heaven.

Summary, using pure grape wine is for validity and adding the drop of water and the par cle of host are rich symbols of the Church that have grown in meaning over me.

Blessings on you and your families, Bishop Mark

Prayer for Voca ons to the Religious Life

Our Father, you call some of your children to band together in community for the public service of your Church and to live the life of voluntary poverty, chas ty and obedience. You need them to remind all of us of our eternal life with you, to show us the goodness of living together in love, and to do spe-cial work in your Church. May this witness be strong and in-spiring. Give many men and women the grace to follow this path in generous sharing, open love for all and faithful service of your Church, for your honor and glory. Amen
