Christmas Fair

This year our Christmas Fair takes place on

Friday 28th November from 6-8pm.

As well as all the usual stalls, seasonal refreshments, raffle and, of course, Santa’s Grotto, this year sees some exciting new attractions – great new

stalls, a tombola especially for chocoholics, and even reindeer racing!

Don’t forget to save all those stamps from the envelopes of your

Christmas cards. The collection box is in the foyer.

Reception's Rainbow Day

Last Friday children in Year R enjoyed a RAINBOW DAY as an activity to finish their topic on Colours. The Children came to

school in brightly dressed clothes and had a rainbow picnic. They were encouraged to try different coloured foods including red, yellow and green peppers, plums, a variety of flavoured jellies and coloured cakes.

The children enjoyed the day, it was lovely to see them dressed in so many different

colours.

Christmas Dinner

Christmas dinner will be served on Wednesday 10th December.

Please carefully read the letter which has been sent out this week with instructions

about how to pre-book your child’s Christmas dinner.

Tom’s Success on the Speedway!

Recently, Tom Stewart and his older brother Sam who is an

ex-pupil of Norwood, took part in a weekend of motorbike

racing at Scunthorpe Speedway track to end this seasons

championships. For each category there were 5 races per

day and all the points are tallied up to create the overall

positions for the days racing. These are used to find the

overall position in the championship for the season. On

Saturday, Tom finished 3rd on his Auto KTM 50cc machine

and 4th on his KX65cc.

In very wet and extremely muddy conditions on Sunday,

Tom seemed to ride much better and finished in 2nd place

on his Auto bike and 3rd on his 65cc. Sam managed a

credible 2nd place on both days.

Junior Riders Club Presentation Evening with their trophies

and awards. Tom finished in 2nd place overall in the Cadet

championship and 3rd in the Auto Cadet championship. Tom and Sam also achieved 5th and

3rd place respectively in the ACU British National Championship.

Well done to both of the boys for their achievements and excellent results!

Sefton Children’s University at Norwood

Sefton Children’s University is a way to recognise and reward children’s voluntary participation in learning activities and experiences outside the normal school curriculum.

Children’s University acknowledges the impact study support activities can have on children and the contribution made by staff in delivering this support.

Children’s University aims to raise children’s awareness of University and the key differences between school and University, in particular the voluntary nature of higher education.

There is a relationship between attendance and attainment which is reinforced through an 80% attendance requirement.

How does it work?

Sefton Children’s University operates through Sefton primary schools. Schools ac-credit activities that meet the Children’s University criteria and children attending those activities gain credits.

Children who gain sufficient credits by the end of a Key Stage (end of Year 6 or Year 2) will be invited to graduate from Sefton Children’s University at a special ceremony held at a local university.

Attendance Attendance at Sefton Children’s University activities is voluntary and as such children must commit to attend regularly in order to gain credits.

All Sefton Children’s University modules must operate an 80% attendance rule. This means that in order for a child to bank any credits from a particular module, they must attend at least 80% of the sessions. Credits are awarded only for attendance, not for achievement or performance.

SEFTON

Yr 3 - Egyptians

The children in Year 3 are in-volved in a theme of work on the Egyptians and a visit to the World Museum Liverpool has been arranged. They will study artifacts and look for evidence in the Egyptian Gallery and

Conservation Centre.

This trip will take place on Tuesday 9th December. The children will be leaving school at 8.30 am. and returning to school at around 3.45pm.

Please make sure your child is in school for 8.15am.

Shinewaves Competition Time

Last weeks competition was to take a photo or draw a picture of a poppy to capture the meaning of

Remembrance Day. The winner was Alex Wainwright from 5P.

Congratulations on a really well thought out photograph, supported by meaningful text.

As this week is anti-bullying week, the latest competition is to design an anti-bullying poster for our school. You can use pictures and words to get the

message clearly across. You can draw or use computer graphics to design your poster. Mrs Baron will help me

pick the winning poster. The winner will be announced at the next competition

time broadcast at 3.05pm on Tuesday.

Post your entry into the Competition post box, with your name and class on the back.

Midday Supervisor

If anyone is interested in becoming a Midday Supervisor here at Norwood, we do have vacancies. If you are available Monday to Friday between 11.45 and

1.15 pm and would like to work as part of our team, please introduce yourself to Mrs Bennet. We would also be interested in hearing from anyone who would be willing to do this on a casual basis just covering for absences from time to time.

International Day

On Thursday 20th November, we will be celebrating ‘The World Around Us’.

We would love children to bring in anything they have at home that could add to their knowledge about various continents,

whether it is artwork, music, costumes, or books.

Power Station

‘Power Station’ is available as part of the Leyland Rd Methodist

Church Youth Project for children in Year’s 3-6. There are games, craft, pool, table tennis, tuck shop and much more. This takes place in the church hall every Tuesday 6-7.30 pm, term time only at Ley-land Rd Methodist Church. Subs

One-Way System & Parking in the Crescent

The unofficial one way system in the crescent is in opera-tion for the protec-tion of the children.

Please remember its all about their

safety!

This system works extremely well for both the schools and residents. This system is much safer for the children who are walk-ing or who travel to school on bicy-cles. Cars come in at the bottom of Meols Cop bridge and go out at the

bottom of Roe Lane bridge.

Residents can get extremely cross when cars are parked over their drives preventing them access to and from their homes. We pride

ourselves on the good relationships

Parking in Staff Car Park

Some parents are dropping their chil-dren off in the staff car park on their way into the breakfast club. This is

causing a major concern, therefore we ask parents not to use the staff car

park at any time.

Handy Tips to Help Your Child

After a very busy day in school it is easy for any child to forget where they should go at 3.15 pm and who

will be picking them up.

To encourage your child’s independence and develop their life skills try to keep a little notebook in their

book bag and write down for them these daily arrange-ments and encourage them to refer to the book. Whilst this is helping your child to be able to help

them themselves, this would also serve as a reminder for the class teacher.

After all, as adults we have developed strategies for coping with our busy schedules by keeping reminders and making lists. If your child has this bit of reassur-

ance it will build their confidence and lead to a positive outcome which will benefit family life in the

long term.

For children in the Infant Department, please write this information in a short note and encourage your child to give it to the class teacher at the beginning

of the day.

Dinner Money

It takes Mrs Milligan a lot of time recording the dinner money each week and even more time is being spent chasing up late money. Please, please help her by making sure the correct money is sent in on Monday morning in an envelope clearly marked with your child’s name and class. We do not keep change in school.

Year 2 Dance Club

Norwood Disco Dance Club will be run by Miss McCarthy and Mrs Murray. This fun club, is

where children can dance to their hearts content as well as in front of the mirror, singing into a hair brush! The club will take place after school every Tuesday for 5

weeks starting Tuesday 4th November to Tuesday 2nd

December. The club will finish at 4.15pm.

School Improvements

Over the holiday, we have been updating the premises by having new sink units and storage

installed within the classrooms. A massive job, well done and a great improvement to the building.

Water fountains have also been installed in the corridors for the children to use

The outdoor play area at the back of the school building and alongside the woodland is steadily

improving and now the children have space to play with outdoor equipment in a safe and secure

environment. They have lots of new toys, tricycles, bikes, prams and scooters. This area will be

developed further watch and see.

Year 4 —The Romans

This term the children in Year 4 are involved in a theme of work on ‘Invaders and Settlers’. In con-nection with this work we have arranged a visit to the City of Chester. To add to the experience we have arranged for the children to be given a guided tour by a Roman Soldier, have the opportunity to study artifacts at the Grosvenor Museum

and participate in workshops. This will take place on Wednesday 12th November. All children need to be in their classroom at 8.15am, ready to leave at 8.45am prompt. They will return to school at approximately

4.30pm.

Headlice

If headlice are seen crawling across your child’s hair, we will be contacting you to take your child home

to treat the hair.

Remember you must check hair regularly paying particular attention to the hair behind your child’s ears and in the nape of their neck - the warmest areas - for live lice and eggs.

Use conditioner and a fine toothed comb to dislodge the eggs and this will ensure that the live lice cannot grip the hair.

See your chemist for further information about using lotions.

Shinewaves Radio Station

As 5th November was ‘Bonfire Night’, this week’s competition is to make a firework picture. Children can use any materials such as: crayons, felt-tips, waxes, paints, glit-ter or collage to make one big firework or lots of smaller fireworks making a display. The picture can on A3 or A4

paper – you can get a piece of paper from the class teacher if you don’t have these sizes at home. Mrs Bentley &

Mrs Bennet will look for a winning picture that captures the excitement of fireworks. Make sure your child’s name and

class is on the back of the picture, & post it in the competition post box outside the hall. The winner will be announced at the next competition time broadcast and will be able to collect their prize at the same time. Good luck.

Young Photographer Competition

This is a competition organised by Southport Photo-graphic Society for children aged up to 16 year olds.

Please see the leaflet which is being sent out shortly.

Closing date 19th January 2009.

Girls Football Training

Steph Roberts who is the School’s Community Coach will be holding football training sessions for girls this half term. The sessions take place on Fridays commencing 7th November until 12th December.

Voluntary Helpers

Any parent who would like to be a voluntary helper in school and on school trips, needs to be police checked (CRB cleared). This needs to be an up to date clearance i.e. cleared within the last 12 months. If this has not been done, please call in at the school office for a form.

We are also looking to update our record of the availability of parents, carers and grandparents and which of their skills, hobbies and interests they are willing to share with us. We very much value and appreciate all the help given and the children benefit hugely!

Dinner Money

There are up to 164 children receiving a school dinner each day here at Norwood. As it takes a lot of time to record and account for these meals it is very im-portant that Mrs Milligan receives the cor-rect dinner money on a Monday morning. If your child has been absent for any days the previous week, please deduct the appropriate amount. It takes up a lot of unnecessary time chasing up late money and trying to sort out change. Asthma

Our latest staff meeting included an asthma update from our school nurse Hayley Taylor. If your child has been diagnosed with asthma and they have a brown ‘preventer’ inhaler at home it is essential that you send in a named blue ‘reliever’ inhaler to school. If you only have one in-haler you need to go back to your GP to ask for another. If you have any questions about asthma or any other medi-
