NFHS SPIRIT OF SPORT AWARD:The NFHS “National High School Spirit of Sport Award,” seeks to recognize individuals whoexemplify the ideals of the positive spirit of sport that represent the core mission of education-based athletics. The award may be given in recognition of a specific act or for an activity of longerduration.The award can be given to an individual who has gone beyond the normal everyday expectations ofassisting others within the school or community. It could also be given to an individual who hasovercome some sort of adversity or challenging circumstances. The recipient can be a coach,athletic administrator, administrator, trainer, student-athlete or any others associated with theschool or the school’s athletic program.In the instance of a student, that student must be in good academic standing within his or herrespective high school. Among the qualifying criteria that will be used are the student’s grade-pointaverage, the activities in which he or she is involved, and community involvement. Candidatesshould also possess similar positive character traits, such as a high level of integrity and ethics.Please go to the CIF-SS website to find the nomination form. The deadline is February 1, 2012.

STATE ASSEMBLY BILL 25In addition to Blue Book Rule 313 (Concussion Protocol), a new state bill has been passed and goesinto effect as of January 1, 2012. This new bill (formerly AB 25) has been added to the EducationCode (EC 49475) and reads as follows: If a school district elects to offer an athletic program, theschool district shall comply with both of the following:

1) An athlete who is suspected of sustaining a concussion or head injury in an athletic activity shallbe immediately removed from the activity for the remainder of the day, and shall not be permittedto return to the activity until he or she is evaluated by a licensed health care provider, trained inthe management of concussions, acting within the scope of his or her practice. The athlete shall

CONCUSSION PROTOCOL (Cont.): not be permitted to return to the activity until her or she receiveswritten clearance to return to the activity from that licensed health car provider.

2) On a yearly basis, a concussion and head injury information sheet shall be signed and returned bythe athlete and the athlete’s parent or guardian before the athlete’s initiating practice or competition.

CIF-SS EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE:The CIF-SS Executive Committee met this past weekend in Palm Springs as part of their six yearlymeetings. At that meeting the following action items took place:The EC voted to support a proposal by the Southwestern League that would change the format of theCIF State Bowl Championships beginning with the 2013 football season (including the “Open DivisionOption”).

The EC voted to take “No Position” on the Trinity League Proposal regarding By-Law 200, 206, 207, 208and 510 and the wording “Athletically Motivated”.

The EC voted to support a proposal from the CIF-SS Boys and Girls Tennis Advisory Committeeregarding Bylaw 2706, End of Competition.
