During 2010 the focus of the YWCA of Greater
Wellingtonhasbeentoprepareforchangeandtotake
risks.
Withsignificanthistoricalchangestotheorganisation,
such as the name change, staff changes and the strong
decisions made by the board, YWCA women are
preparing to lead within the ideal of a sustainable future.
It has addressed issues that confront young women:
financialstress,alcoholabuse,bodyimageanddating
violence- all tough topics which badly need attention in
our community today.
One of the year’s highlights was to be involved in the
datingviolenceinformationsessionwiththeSophieElliott
Foundation, which shared with young women and their
mothers the importance of understanding the warning
signs of potentially dangerous relationships. Held at the
New Zealand Portrait Gallery in November 2010, the
sessionshowcasedthesignificantneedtoshareandlearn
from stories such as Lesley Elliott’s account of how her
family and friends failed to heed the danger signs that led
to her daughter’s death.
WhenwelookatthehistoryoftheYWCA,weseethat
over time needs change, and the YWCA has naturally
adapted to different demands. Just as the turning points
and decisions made by young women as they move

future and sustainability.
MaytheYWCAvisionofsupportingthechallengesfor
young women in our region, match their energy, passion
and commitment well into and beyond 2011.

YWCA OF GREATER WELLINGTON INCORPORATED (FORMERLYYWCAOFWELLINGTONANDHUTTVALLEY INCORPORATED)
NOTESTOTHEF INANCIALSTATEMENTSFORTHEYEARENDING31DECEMBER2010
1 Statement of Accounting Policies Reporting Entity These financial statements are for the reporting entity encompassing the operations of the YWCA of Greater Wellington (the Association). The Association runs programmes to help develop and educate young woman. The YWCA is a not-for-profit entity and registered under the Charities Act as a charitable organisation. The financial statements are prepared in New Zealand dollars. Basis of preparation These financial statements have been produced in accordance with NZ GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) recognised by the accounting profession in New Zealand. They comply with the requirements of the Financial Reporting Act 1993 and the Incorporated Societies Act 1908.
The Association qualifies for differential reporting exemption under the Framework for Differential Reporting issued by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of New Zealand, as it is not publicly accountable and is not classified as large. Accordingly the Association has taken advantage of all differential reporting exemptions. Going Concern The Association has incurred a loss for the year of $127,753 and as at 31 December 2010 has net assets of $131,100. The financial statements have been prepared on a going concern basis, which reflects the continuity of normal business activities and the realisation of assets and liabilities in the ordinary course of business.
During the year the Association implemented significant changes to ensure continued viability. These actions included:
- the minimisation of significant expenses (salaries and rent) and beocming a completely volunteer-run organisation,
- sourcing of new income through exploring and implementing fundraising options,
- adopting a policy to only run programmes which are free to participants when full funding is secured, and
- exploring the possibility of running programmes or activities that can be run at no cost to the Association for example by requiring payment from participants or using pro bono support.
The Association have sufficient net assets to meet existing obligations.
Basis of Measurement The financial statements are prepared on an historical cost basis with the exception of some investments which are at fair value. Accrual accounting is used to match expenses with revenues. The financial statements have been prepared on a GST exclusive basis except for Accounts Payable and Receivable Significant Accounting Policies Revenue: Grants are recorded as a liability upon receipt and then recognised as revenue when associated expenditure is incurred. Fees received in advance of a course are recorded as a current liability and recognised as revenue when the course is held. Interest and rental income is recognised when earned. All other income is when the course is held. Interest and rental revenue is recognised when earned. All other revenue is recognised when received. Expenses: Depreciation is provided at rates calculated to allocate the cost of an asset, less any estimated residual value, over its estimated useful life. Other expenses are recognised when incurred. Property, Plant and Equipment: Fixed assets are recorded at cost less accumulated depreciation. Computer and Photocopying equipment are depreciated in accordance with the straight line methodology over a three year period. All other equipment is depreciated over 5 years. Leases: Leases are recognised as operating leases and are not recognised in the Associations’ statement of financial position but are disclosed seperately in the notes. Taxation:The Association is a charitable organisation and is exempt from income tax but is a GST registered organisation. Accounts Receivable: Debtors are recorded at the amount expected to be received in cash. This value is after writing off non recoverable amounts. No provision is made for doubtful debtors. Investments: Investments are recorded at fair value and are periodically assessed for impairment Changes in Accounting Policies: The accounting policies adopted are consistent with those of the previous year.

* Secured deposits comprise secured debenture investments in St Laurence Limited, Strategic Finance Limited and
Dominion Finance Limited. All the investments are frozen as all the holding companies are in receivership. The investments
have been assessed as being impaired and consequently written down to reflect the expected recoverable value of the
asset. Recoverability has been assessed with reference and guidance offered by the Receivers of each company, where the

advised recoverability range spans between 10-35%.
**The comparative period has been restated to adjust for a material error. The adjustment was raised to reflect the fair value
of the investment as at 31 December 2009 accordingly to market rates. The restatement has resulted in an unrealised loss
on investment of $12,530 being recognised in the statement of financial position. the impact of the write down has resulted
in a reduction in the carrying value in shares in a listed company from $53,530 to a restated value of $41,000.
