Obituary Kim Jamieson-Carroll It was with great sadness when we heard the news that former club member Kimberley (Kim) Jamieson-Carroll, daughter of Alan and Jill and sister to Megan, passed away on the evening of July 13, 2006, aged 23 in Christchurch Hospital, from a massive blood infection after several years of illness caused by Type 1 diabetes. Just a day prior to Kim’s death she and Tyler Carroll, her fiancé, made the decision to get married. A special bedside ceremony was quickly arranged and the couple took their vows in front of family and friends. At 8.45pm the following night Kim, while holding Tyler’s hand, slipped away. Kim joined St Albans in 1992/93 and played until 2001/02, a total of 10 seasons and more than 130 games for the club. She started in the Senior Traditional girls team for her first two seasons before going on to be a key member of the third grade women's team that won their grade emphatically three seasons in a row. Kim then skippered the second grade Gold women's team to success in 1997/98. Kim regularly made Canterbury underage representative teams, being a member of the under-14s for three successive years, then the under-17s for three further seasons and was captain in five of the six teams she was chosen for. Kim debuted for the St Albans Premier women’s team at a very young age back in 1996/97 and played a total of 32 matches, taking 28 wickets. Kim was a great party girl and was one of the key organisers of the club social scene in the late ‘90s. Kim was a terrific people person with a positive and energetic personality and her contribution to club life over 23 years was significant and appreciated by all club members. Her Saturday night treks into the city after cricket with “Knoxy” and half the club are legendary. There were many touching tributes made at Kim's funeral held at the Academy Funeral Home in Upper Riccarton. It was attended by over 250 of Kim’s family and friends, particularly from within the wider St Albans cricket family as well as many other sporting and high school mates.

President’s Report On behalf of your Executive and Committee, I have much pleasure in presenting the Annual Report and Accounts covering the 2006/07 season, the 102nd in the club’s history. When one looks back over the last 12 months and tries to review the outcomes in a positive manner, one can not be too far off the mark by describing it as a phantasmagorical mix of the tranquil and the furious. Tranquil as in no major situations or challenges arose and the upward direction of the club was quietly maintained, while the furious was the energetic and boisterous start that most teams had and maintained throughout the summer, but sadly ending with all but three teams finishing without gold medals. It was as incomprehensible as Sanskrit is to a rabbit. Once again the Annual General Meeting was held at the Trevino’s function room on the last day of July and the few numbers present were no more fazed by the small turnout than Drake on the Hoe was when he had an Armada to fight. The election was quickly undertaken and the business of running a successful cricket club was once again underway. There are many people in club administrations who have never run anything more difficult than a bath, but not at this club. Those elected are volunteers who are enthusiastic, skilled and knowledgeable and who toil far away from the lights and glamour to ensure that your club is worthy of being counted amongst the top 10 cricket clubs in New Zealand. Pre-season winter trainings were very well received, although on the female side a better attendance could have been shown, particularly in the areas below Premiers. The club goes to a lot of trouble organising suitable times and coaches and a little more response would be appreciated. Interested onlookers were however impressed with the skills being displayed. Bowlers were showing more toe than the proverbial Roman sandal, but at the same time many were being torn apart like a KFC chicken as batsman were eager to make the most of the flat and true batting surface. Was all this pre-season action creating a spurious illusion? Opening day came and went, with a good number of new and keen players eager to sign up and to do well for the mighty Saints. The traditional men’s game against the Upper Valley club from Wellington was again played on Hagley 4, with the “Embers” being wrestled back to our trophy cabinet by a side selected from the Premier and second team squads.

The same number of adult teams was entered as the previous season, although our junior ranks were considerably enhanced. Our junior girls section was bolstered by an extra four teams while, for the first time in 17 years, we had a junior boys team. This has taken the phrase of “the club being emboldened by a born and bred policy” to a new level, as increasingly local ties mean more in an increasingly expanding city. Blame global warming, the scapegoat du jour, but how else do you explain the bizarre and sporting pitch conditions that confronted teams on many Saturday mornings during the season? The weather overall was not great. It was cloudy and barely warm with regularly inclement conditions on Thursday nights and Fridays making preparation of good quality pitches a challenge. However, in saying that, I believe that the standard of pitch preparation by our ground staff, particularly that of the Hagley Oval pitches, has dropped to such a degree as to cause this club considerable concern. If the effort is going in then it must be the lack of nous or appreciation of what needs doing, and when. Not enough experienced and qualified help is being made available as and when it’s needed. Club officials will be working hard to see that a vast improvement is evident in practice and match wickets, outfields and perimeter extremities for next season. This might be seen as a tough call on the people who prepare our cricket areas but, as many club members have told me, we are just not getting good enough value for money. We are a paying customer of the Christchurch City Council and our expectations are high. We don’t apologise for this. As I mentioned earlier, the club only celebrated three victories during the season, which was five less than the target I challenged the club to achieve in my speech on opening day. Congratulations go to the Premier women who won their Twenty20 competition, one of the three different competitions which they competed in during the season. Our third grade girls led from start to finish and came home with the proverbial wet sail, winning their grade well before the end of the season. Finally, our under-15 girls Gold team swept all before it in a real tour de force, winning the title in a canter. Congratulations to all those girls in the club who played in these teams. As someone once said “what’s the point of going head-to-head if you don’t strive for victory with all sinews stretched. Equally though there is surely more satisfaction in a win gained smilingly, rather than dressed in a sneer. The sweetest memories are those that lift the heart, not the ones that leave a bad taste.” Even though the club failed to win a single men’s grade, most teams were highly placed in their respective grades. The many second and

third placings, together with the wins by the girls’ teams, saw the club win the prestigious Petersen Shield, the symbol of the overall champion club in the city. It is said that cricket is not a game you can play revved up to red all the time. And that is true. But there are times when a common feeling runs through a club, unspoken but palpable. You can sense an explosion or drive for success after a time of torpor. I felt that the club had this in abundance as the positiveness to do well gathered momentum, particularly when the season was starting to draw towards the final weeks. This year the club departed from the norm and employed Stephen Cunis as the Premier men’s player/coach as well as Luke Piper, an Australian, as the club professional and overall club coach. Stephen, in his first summer as a fully fledged coach and without any provincial duties, went about his responsibilities with energy, enthusiasm and a solid drive for success. He created an environment that saw very large turnouts to training sessions and after-match warm-downs in the pavilion. The fact that Saints was one of only two clubs to have a side in the end of season top-four playoffs in each of the top three grades was a testament to his efforts. We have re-engaged Stephen for next summer. Luke gave good support to Stephen and was a popular member of the Premier team. I think that Luke would be the first to say that he was disappointed in the number of runs he scored or match-winning efforts he contributed. However, in defence of his batting return, one needs to be a tad sympathetic due to the very sporting tracks that he encountered. Luke undertook all the requirements of a seasoned professional and, on behalf of the club, I thank him for his efforts. To Luke’s partner Jen, I would also say a big thank you for your efforts and support of the club, whether it be organising this or that, or just looking after our other English guests. We have not re-engaged Luke for the 2007/08 season, although Luke has intimated that he will continue to play as a local for the club. Both he and Jen are currently living in Methven. The search is on for a replacement professional. This summer we had a influx of amateur players from the UK and all fitted in well to club life. Adam Iyer and Joel Tratt were two lads who played in our second grade side and both performed well with bat and ball. Both boys often punched well above their weight. Off the field they were proficient and friendly coaches as well as being valuable exponents on the social side of the club. Two other Englishmen also played in our third grade team. Jonathan Redfern and Pete Moxom (who joined after Christmas) both enjoyed prosperous summers with

Jonathan winning his team’s player of the year award. We also welcomed Hannah Johnson from England to the women’s side of the club. Although not setting the world on fire with the bat she quickly became a regular part of the Premier women’s team. I guess she learned lots and will be a better player for her experience “Down Under”. Hannah also provided very valuable coaching expertise to the third grade girls. Her calm, supportive and positive way with the girls was appreciated and well commented on. Duane Pettet and Nicola Wilson, the two club captains, have both commented on and given a summary of the various sides in the club in their respective reports, so I won’t double-up and do the same. However, I would say bad luck to the Premier, third grade and President’s grade men’s sides who all had competition aspirations taken from them on the last day of the summer. As they say, they are all teams on the boulevard of broken dreams. Two of our women’s sides also stumbled in sight of potential victories; the Premiers in the one-day final and the first grade side in the final round being airbrushed out of history. Once again I would like to acknowledge the family of sponsors, funding agencies and contributors to the club with either product or time and expertise. Chris Bird, owner of Chevron Cars, continues to support our club professional with a vehicle. Grant Thornton Chartered Accountants, through Trevor Thornton, provided valuable administrative support and once again sponsored the audit of the club. Bevan Gerling from Churchill’s Public House provided our hospitality requirements and vouchers while the Big Pizza chain supported the club with the two player of the day vouchers each Saturday. A big thank you goes to all of the above supporters, plus to two members who each gave a large anonymous donation to help fund junior players clothing and a new scorers’ area. Sporting clubs are increasingly becoming reliant on the many charitable trusts that can be approached for funding through the poker machines which they control. We have been careful not to make this club too dependent on these trusts, preferring a mix of traditional and proven fundraising schemes to complement the various approaches which can be made. There are an increasing number of applications being submitted to these trusts each year, with more and more money going to provincial bodies, making it even harder for the little guys. The pool of funding is also slowly shrinking with the total value of applications being considerably more than the money available. However, in saying that, we are very appreciative of the donations that

we do receive and for last summer we are indebted to the Eureka Trust, Canterbury Foundation and the Caversham Trust. The traditional after-match Saturday evening functions, together with the more spontaneous after-practice wind-downs, were outstandingly embraced by the club this summer. Credit must go to Stephen Cunis and Luke Piper, who constantly reinforced the point to members of the top three teams that if we play and practice together, then we socialise together. This attitude rubbed off on other teams in the club and even towards the end of the summer the ladies got into the swing of club camaraderie. The organised functions were also well attended with opening day, the quiz evening, Christmas party, end of season night and the prize-giving night all being huge successes. At the prize-giving we were privileged to have Ric Charlesworth, the New Zealand Cricket high performance manager, as our guest speaker and prize presenter. As the catalyst behind the revitalisation and restructure of the high performance setup within NZC, his words on this subject were very interesting and informative. As a medical doctor, Australian federal politician, first-class cricketer, international hockey player and double Olympic gold medal-winning coach, he displayed an easy manner and willingness to answer questions on his fascinating and diverse experiences. During the evening Ric presented the many and varied awards which the club gives out on these nights. The feature prize was that of the club’s player of the year, which was awarded to Stephen Cunis. Stephen, in his rookie year as a Premier men’s coach, tutored and trained the team to second place in the two-day competition, only missing out on championship honours on the last Saturday of the season. As well, he had an extremely good season with bat and ball, taking 38 wickets at 14.02 with a best bowling return of 7-26 while also scoring 458 runs at 22.90 including four fifties. His award was popularly received by the more than 120 club members present. During the evening all of the club’s awards were presented, with the Peers Cup going to Duane Pettet. The personality of the year went to Eleanor Horne. The Noel Love Trophy for the mature club member who displays dedication, enthusiasm, social interaction and for just being a bloody good person also went to Eleanor. James O’Gorman and Alice Forbes were presented with the most improved player awards while Justin Gourlie and Sam Fitzsimon were recognised as the club’s most promising male and female players. Many other playing achievements

and milestones were recognised during the evening, some in a more humorous vein than others. The famous (or infamous) Rod McCurdy award went to Sarah Burke who, in keeping with the theme of the award, was not on hand to receive it. But I am sure that the cheers and whooping of acknowledgment could have been heard by Sarah no matter where she was at the time. This award, above all others, is probably the most eagerly sought after ... particularly by those not in line to receive it. The Stumbling Block award went to James Alabaster who, on the way to what would have been a well-deserved hundred, tripped up by being bowled for 99. The King Hit crown for most sixes went to Dan Johnston with 21 sixes, while at the other end of the spectrum Bevan Rich and Ben Young jointly won the Duck Trophy for the dubious distinction of scoring six ducks each. The other five awards I’d like to mention were the most economical bowling performances for the season. In a fully completed 10-over spell Bryce Hackett (with figures of 10-6-9-6) was the best, while in a nine-over spell Mel Reid (9-3-8-4) came out on top. Finally, in the eight-over grades Ben Young (8-5-6-3) was the best of the summer. Only five centuries were scored during the season, which is nearly an all-time low, with Joel Huston’s 163 being the best. Although no hat-tricks were taken in the adult section two were taken by members of our junior teams. Congratulations to Ben Norriss and Natalie Cox for achieving this fine feat. Many of the other awards are listed in the back of this report. As well as our own prize-giving function many of our executive, committee and members were present at the Canterbury Cricket Association club and provincial awards night held at the Canterbury Horticultural Centre the following week. Our club had a fairly lean night, based on previous years, with only the Premier women and third grade girls picking up their trophies. The club was however awarded the Petersen Shield as the top club in Christchurch. This was the 22nd time that St Albans has won this prestigious award, with the total only being bettered by the Sydenham club’s 27 in the 102 years of its existence. We did however have several of our provincial players called up to the presentation stage for well-deserved trophies. These included: Helen Watson, who won both the Canterbury Magicians fielder of the year and the most outstanding individual performance awards; Amy

Satterthwaite, who won both the Jean Ruddenklau Trophy for consistency in club and representative cricket and the prestigious club cricket player of the year award; Aaron Johnstone won the Chattel Hayes Memorial Trophy for most wicket-keeping dismissals (with 31, all caught) in two-day club cricket; Ben Langrope won the Junior Bowling Trophy for the most wickets (14) at the national under-19 tournament; and Chris Harris won the Canterbury Wizards most outstanding performance award for his 52-ball century in a Twenty20 match against Auckland. On the social front the club had one of its most successful and vibrant seasons for many a year. Again credit must go to Stephen Cunis and Luke Piper who fired up the members of the top three teams into a very convivial and club-orientated group of guys. Players from the ‘70s and ‘80s would have been proud of the length of time players stayed at the club to socialise. Consequently, the bar revenue’s downward trend of recent years was reversed with healthy receipts being recorded. Thanks to Julie on a Saturday night and to Eleanor, as a helper when required, for your diligent and conscientious work behind the bar. We mustn’t lose sight that cricket is a sport, and sports are about celebration, expression, spontaneity and a cold drink. Later in the season most of the afternoon grade sides and some of the women’s teams also discovered the value and esprit de corps of club support. The club again hosted the popular Tuesday night Twilight Zone competition, which this year had 10 teams. Organiser Kevin Snook runs 16 tight and efficient nights of non-stop, fun-filled and just a wee bit competitive all-action cricket for a group of guys who come straight from work to play in teams, some with very odd names. Thanks for your continuing organisational skills and passion, Kevin. For the first time in a fair number of years the club did not have anyone in the Black Caps team, although this was more than compensated by three of our Premier women being selected in the White Ferns. Congratulations to Sarah Burke, Rowan Milburn (who debuted in the team that went to India) and Helen Watson on your national team selections. As I write this report, Amy Satterthwaite and Beth McNeill have also just been selected along with the other three for the White Ferns’ two upcoming winter tours. Congratulations girls. Well done to you Amy, as a debutant and for becoming the 21st New Zealand women’s selection from the club.

The club, as usual, had a plethora of players who represented Canterbury in one or more of the many first-class, ‘A’, development or underage men’s, women’s, boys and girls teams that were put on the field during the summer. Our club has a proud tradition and history of supplying quality players to a wide number of representative teams and, without exception, all have done so with distinction and pride. A list of these players can be found in the records section near the end of this report. Suffice to say, congratulations to you all. At the time of writing this report, only Neil and Mary Cross and Peter Mayell have advised that they are unavailable for next season’s committee. Although Neil and Mary have only had one year on the committee, they have been great advocates and have worked hard for all club members. Peter Mayell, with a total of 12 years of committee work spread over a number of summers, has once again found himself in a job-versus-club situation. Last season was a struggle for him, as he wanted to be more involved but the job came first, as it should. As an employee of New Zealand Cricket, it is a privilege to have a guy in such an exalted position working within our parent body, and as part of our club. No doubt we will see Pete (“Percy”) back again in the not-too-distant future. During the year, the club executive and committee met on 12 occasions. Attendances were as follows:

Very little pavilion maintenance was undertaken over the last 12 months, though members will see a small addition when they return in late September. A scorers’ box will be incorporated into the lounge, but not in the same position as it is now. The area where the memorabilia display is now will be transformed into a small room with a wall/entrance and windows facing towards the Oval. This will give scorers a more cloistered and peaceful place in which to (doze off) work. It will, if required, also allow for a canopy to be installed, to keep the low-setting sun at bay. The front-facing upstairs wall is also in need of a coat of paint and this will be attended to at the same time. Balcony boards are an on-going situation and it won’t be long before a complete new set of decking boards will be needed. During the summer the club enhanced its relationship with Christ’s College, Christchurch South Intermediate and one or two other schools that we are very keen to get more formalised arrangements with. Although being a central city club means we have no obvious suburban catchment area when it comes to player recruitment, we are always mindful of the need to get closer to many of the inner-city schools, particularly in our traditional north-west area. However, we should always be on the lookout for synergies in other areas and having schoolteachers as current or former non-playing members helps. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Nigel Marsh, our community cricket coordinator at the CCA, for his help during the last 12 months. Always approachable, positive and keen to help, Nigel keeps us all on our toes and makes sure that we keep focused on the job of keeping the club growing and in touch with our preferred group of schools. I would also like to thank Richard Reid and the other staff at the CCA. Although we don’t have too much to do with the CCA board it is the full-time staff that we rely on to ensure a smooth and accurate channel of communication is maintained. Newly appointed at the beginning of last season Mike Fisher was thrown in the deep end of club, school, women’s and junior club cricket. To his credit he eagerly accepted the challenge and, on the whole, made a good fist of his first year in control. Mike is the person who we have most to do with on a day-to-day basis and our relationship must be a positive one with him, which I believe is. Last summer saw the Premier men’s competition revert to an eight-team format with the reintroduction of teams from the Sydenham and Burnside West University clubs. As well, new criteria for being a Premier club was introduced. This covered a wide range of club areas

Page 14: 103rd Annual General Meeting FLASH/archive/st-a_ar... · 2008-08-04 · 3 St Albans Cricket Club Notice is hereby given that the 103rd Annual General Meeting of the St Albans Cricket

16

and, in general terms, we have, or will have by this summer, ticked off all of the requirements. I personally believe that it was good for club cricket to have the traditional eight clubs all in the fold. We need eight strong, competitive clubs if cricket is to be kept as the number one summer sport, even if requires some extra support given by the CCA or other clubs to those that need it. Our first responsibility is to our own club, but if we can help a fellow club, we should. As a club we try to be a good citizen and run ourselves within the various protocols, rules and regulations that are constantly being thrust upon us. All these regulations, controls and ordinances we embrace. Many of these are mandatory, official or regulatory and all take a huge amount of time, which puts a huge strain on amateur administrators. If I could have a wish, it would be for the CCA to make some sort of administrative funding application to one of the trusts for a disbursement of a small stipend to clubs to be used for a semi-professional or part-time club administrator. I should at this stage thank all those involved with the club, who freely give up their time as a coach, scorer, manager, ground helper, advisory group member, selector, convener, committee person or any other volunteer who forms part of running a successful club. We have a large group of former members who are now in the wider cricketing family plying their trade or making a living from this great game. The list seems to get longer each year and, rather than upset someone for leaving them off the list, better just to say thanks and we salute you for your efforts in helping to keep our great game great. I would like to take a paragraph to acknowledge the fantastic and strident service that Eleanor Horne has given to the club over the last 21 years. Initially she served as the secretary of the club between 1986 and 1999 and since then, with a wee overlap, as the club’s caterer. Several years ago Eleanor was made a life member of the club and normally that signals a slow-down and a waning of interest in everyday club activities. Not so with Eleanor. She still had plenty of energy and vigour left to literally throw herself into club life even more, particularly in the catering area. Sacre bleu, I said to myself, when she told me of her decision to retire. How will I fill this vital part of the club organisation? Thank you Eleanor, for the great service you have given to the club. We were pleased to be able to acknowledge your efforts at the club prize-giving night. Don’t be a stranger, we’d love to see you at the AGMs or during the season, and seasons beyond, of course.

In a couple of weeks time the club will be holding its 103rd Annual General Meeting. The date, time and venue can be found on page three of this report. We hope to see you at this meeting, as this is the place to seek answers to any of your questions or provide criticisms you may have or, perhaps, on a more positive note, give some favourable feedback to the executive and committee. Recruitment is well underway, pre-season training is to begin soon for those trying out for the top sides in the men’s and women’s sections, various women’s and underage coaching positions are being filled and questions are being asked about our readiness for another season. We have developed a winning, fun and successful culture in the club, let’s all together take the club up a notch and have one hell of a 2007/08 season. Winter well my friends and we will see all rampant Golden Lions growling and hungry for success when opening day comes around on the third Saturday of September. Alan Jamieson

Men’s Club Captain’s Report I was first lined up for the job of men’s club captain by our esteemed president Alan Jamieson a couple of months prior to last year’s Annual General Meeting. Reluctant to commit to the post without first knowing exactly what it entailed, I demanded a full job description from “God”, something he duly promised to deliver. The AGM came and went and I was still waiting for said job description to arrive, despite already having being elected to the role. I started to wonder if this was some sort of elegant ruse constructed by my peers on the committee, in order to extract some “sneaky” Schadenfreude at my expense! I did however find a bit of solace in some well-timed words of wisdom from my predecessor of four years, Tony Falloon. So I headed into the virtual unknown as the season quickly approached, left largely to fend for myself, hoping for the best but fearing the worst ... Well, I can now happily report, when all’s said and done, it was a (relatively) painless experience in the end. Certainly, receiving text messages at 1.03am and then phone calls at 2.47am from players on a Saturday morning saying they can’t play “tomorrow” aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, but I did my best to take it in my stride. After all, it was probably better to be informed that way, rather than simply have teams find out they only had 10 men when they turned up - obviously at a time when it is pretty much too late to arrange decent contingency plans! Turnouts at pre-season training were encouraging, with a number of promising new players coming along to join the club. Opening day was a relatively quiet affair with fewer than normal attending the net sessions, partly due to the variable weather conditions. Also responsible was the President’s grade side’s warm-up match against a trial fourth grade selection team on Polo 1. This proved a useful exercise, as a better assessment of half a dozen new players could be gained from match play rather than nets alone. Overall recruitment and retention efforts allowed us to enter the same number of sides with the Canterbury Cricket Association as the previous season. Attendance at practice by the morning grade players was, on the large majority of occasions, nothing short of superb. This was squarely due to the work ethic instilled by club coach Stephen Cunis, who brought a well-balanced approach to training sessions. Knowing when to be a hard taskmaster and when to pull back on the throttle by throwing a bit of light relief into the mix helped ensure that players not only improved their own games but also enjoyed their time while doing so.

For that, personally, as a player, team captain and club captain, I am most appreciative of Stephen’s contribution. Practice attendances by afternoon grade players started encouragingly, as it usually does, but tapered off alarmingly by mid-season. Fourth grade, however, were the exception to the rule, consistently having at least six players turn up every week and a few times even having their full side show up to roll their arms over. One of my main goals of the season was to ensure every team got 11 men on the park every single week of the summer. It was to prove a lofty aim and, despite the best efforts of U2 concerts, 21st birthday parties and Wildfoods Festivals to try and scupper this initiative, we achieved a fairly satisfactory percentage of complete XIs. There is, however, always room for improvement. Collectively too we must all stay vigilant to the habits of unreliable team-mates, those creatures who have an uncanny knack of suddenly being able to disappear through a rip in the space-time continuum and into a dimension where there is no cellphone coverage. Bottom line - keep in touch, everyone! Looking at the season itself, it was especially pleasing to see all top three Saints teams qualify for the top-four playoffs in their respective two-day competitions. We were one of only two clubs, alongside East Christchurch Shirley, to achieve this feat. The morning grades had been restructured, with the CCA ridding each grade of extra teams from the same club, thus increasing the depth and breadth of competitions. No longer were the grades dominated by a couple of sides and then filled out with a number of also-rans. The new top-four/bottom-four format means there is no lacking in motivation for sides during the initial round-robin phase. As the bottom four teams are effectively out of title contention with six weeks remaining in the season, it has brought a real cutting edge to matches, particularly during the later rounds. Therefore, given what is at stake for each club, it will no doubt become even more challenging to get our teams into the top four in coming seasons. The major disappointment of the season was that none of the men’s teams managed to win a competition. Many came extremely close, with three sides (Premiers, thirds and President’s) all well in the running on the final day’s play. Offsetting this, though, was the other major achievement to bring great pride to the club this season. We won the Petersen Shield for the 22nd time in the club’s illustrious history - a strong reflection on how consistently highly-placed almost

every St Albans team was, even if none of them could quite stretch their necks out far enough to finish first past the post. We also have the women’s section of the club to thank for this success, as they did at least manage a couple of grade victories - thanks girls! Well done everyone, this is one of the most coveted prizes in all of club cricket. New Members During the season 30 new members joined or rejoined the club, either prior to the season commencing or at some stage during it. We hope you enjoyed your summer with the club and we will see you back in October in your whites (or blue-and-golds) fighting fit, focused and ready to take on all-comers. These players included:

Members Who Have Left Like at most sporting clubs, there is a significant number of members who come and go during the winter months. Some play just a few games, some stay for the season, while a few have had long and illustrious spells with the club. It is getting harder to keep track of these players as university studies, overseas travel, job opportunities and the odd transfer to another club affect more and more players within the club. To those that have left, either before or during the summer, we thank you for your efforts and hope that your shift away is not permanent and, as always, we would readily welcome you back to the club at any such time in the future. Team Summaries

Premier - captained by Aaron Johnstone. It was a return to an eight-team grade after the two-year experiment of six teams failed to take off. It was a season of what-ifs for the side, which received a welcome injection of youth part-way through the year. Things looked ominous when they sat stone-cold last after the first couple of two-day rounds but the side turned things around in the blink of an eye to head the competition going into the Christmas break. They extended their lead going into the final two games of the season but conceded that advantage when they stumbled badly against Riccarton, when a draw at that stage would’ve all but secured the title. They still had a decent mathematical chance of victory going into the final game against East Christchurch Shirley, but fortune wasn’t on their side. Defeating Easts ended up being a bitter consolation prize after the news of Riccarton’s resounding title-sealing triumph over Sydenham had filtered through. The one-day competition was somewhat disjointed and it was hard to gather any real momentum in this form of the game, with the team unable to win any more than two games on the trot. They did keep

their slim hopes alive with a miraculous one-run win over Canterbury Country in their final game, but Lancaster Park Woolston upset the previously-unbeaten Old Boys Collegians to pinch the last semi-final spot instead. The team’s Twenty20 campaign was brief, losing in the semi-finals of a knockout format. Next season is likely to see more attention paid to this form of the game though, with a concentrated, centralised weekend-long tournament set to be held. Michael Davidson became the first new Canterbury men’s representative from the club in five seasons and acquitted himself well given limited opportunities in the side thus far. Well done “Stom”, here’s hoping for more of the same this coming season. Second Grade - captained by Andrew Cuttriss and Kim Smythe. It was almost déjà vu for this team as they performed rather similarly to the season before. They played extremely well for large portions of games only to let their guard down at inopportune moments and suddenly the match would disappear from their grasp. The team had to put up with a high number of changes to their playing XI as well as having initial skipper Andrew Cuttriss depart for work in Wellington part-way through the season, handing the mantle over to Kim Smythe. It wasn’t until midway through the season that the side started to gain some real traction but by that stage the leaders were well out of sight. Somewhat roughly, they were edged out of one-day semi-final contention on a head-to-head count-back. Their best achievement of the season was making it into the top four of the two-day competition, but in the end had to settle for fourth as the powerful Old Boys Collegians outfit romped to the title with two whole matches to spare. Third Grade - captained by Duane Pettet. The scriptwriters must’ve got a little bored and just rehashed a version of what happened to this team of “nearly men” in each of the previous two seasons - such was the similarly in this side’s undulating fortunes. As per usual, they got off to a hiss and a roar, looking near-invincible in the early rounds. Act II saw them lose a steady stream of players promoted to second grade while also dropping a few games that were there for the taking. They then found some impressive form to give themselves an outside shot at the title going into the final Act ... only to choke spectacularly, in homage to one of the best Shakespearean tragedies.

In the one-dayers, they just couldn’t find the final knockout blow to put away opponents despite administering a number of standing-eight counts. Strangely, this competition didn’t have semi-finals like the two grades above it, despite otherwise being identical in format. They played some excellent cricket for good chunks of the season in what was arguably the strongest third grade competition in well over a decade, itself a tribute to the CCA’s restructuring effort. They are also likely to be coming up against some Suburban teams next year too, making the team’s everlasting quest for a trophy even tougher still. Senior B Grade - captained by Tony Falloon. This team enjoyed nail-biting finishes, almost specialising in this type of denouement this season. It was the second year this side played in the combined metropolitan/suburban grade, and it was to be the first time in many years that they weren’t quite a completely irresistible force. It was an extremely even competition with most teams capable of beating one another, although the top-ranked Old Boys Collegians Cavaliers (containing a number of recent second-grade players) were a class above. To our credit, we did take them right to the wire before going down on both occasions. The ‘BBBBs’ used an unprecedented 25 players as the core of the squad was less stable than in previous years, but they still did well to finish third equal in the final analysis. With the average age of this iconic Saints team steadily climbing, a shift back down to their old stamping ground of fourth grade may be on the cards in the near future. Fourth Grade - captained by James Alabaster. This was a radically different team to that of last year, with only a small handful of survivors remaining as the side was re-built from the ground up. A number of key acquisitions helped this team become the revelation of the men’s side of the club, after having spent many years stuck in oblivion. They made a bleak start though, losing their first two matches by comprehensive margins to let old doubts briefly resurface. However, they soon got on track by winning 10 of their next 11 games, the only loss being a narrow one to the eventual grade winners. This got them well and truly into title contention. Their crunch game came with three weeks remaining in the season, against the top-placed Lancaster Park Woolston Pohutukawa. Win that and the title was theirs for the taking.

24

Unfortunately, they didn’t bring their ‘A’ game with them that day, being rolled for 90 batting first. Though they put up a brave fight in the field, they were a good 30 runs short of a winning total in the end. So this unlikely new mob had to settle for a creditable second place, taking with it a good dose of self-belief that the best from them is yet to come - hopefully next season. Fifth Grade - captained by Matt Sutherland. It was a bizarre year for this side, losing more matches than they won on the park but, thanks to three no-shows by their opposition, they ended up third-equal on the table. Remarkably, they were co-leaders in late January but five straight losses put paid to their chances of pulling off a competition win - one that would’ve almost surprised them as much as anyone else. This is one of the most stable teams when it comes to relying on a core squad to fill their playing XI week-in and week-out. This season was no exception, despite on three occasions going at least three weeks between official competition games. This grade has become noticeably stronger in the past couple of seasons and this side, having made the step up from sixth grade, has had to make a significant adjustment in this time. However, this top bunch of guys clearly have a great time playing their cricket together, no matter the final result. Sixth Grade - captained by Everton Snell. This team were the unbelievably-bad-luck story of the season. Right from the get-go this team seemed to be cursed. Their opening game was cancelled as a shortage of fit grounds across the city on a wet first week saw them bumped from their assigned pitch. The second week saw them given the first of four byes, which was two or three more than almost every other side received during the season. This was caused by fluctuations in the number of sides playing in the grade, with Saints unluckily being the first to take an enforced rest whenever the grade was redrawn. Two practice games against our similarly-unfortunate fifth grade team helped hone their skills for the main event. They hit the ground running when they finally got onto the park for real, winning three of their first four games. But a subsequent downturn in form and the loss of a couple of key players coincided with a further string of byes, defaults and washouts. The team effectively went 13 consecutive playing weeks without a proper victory as a result. Three wins and a tie in their last four games provided scant consolation at the conclusion of a wretched season, as they ended up fourth in the five-team competition.

There is light on the horizon however, as a merger of the metropolitan and suburban competitions is on the cards for next season. This should provide a greater number and variety of teams to compete with, and this team’s solid nucleus of able afternoon cricketers could really flourish in this sort of revamped environment. President’s Grade - captained by Barry Slater. That this team nearly and, quite frankly, should’ve won the competitive despite using an incredible 49 different players during the season speaks volumes, both for the quality of the regulars and that of the fill-ins too. Skipper Barry Slater had the extra challenge of emerging from the imposing shadow of retired captain Alan Jamieson. He had to get the best out of his troops and establish himself as a leader in his own right, all the while having “God” keep a close eye on his old team’s progress from high atop his (metaphorical) cloud. With the batting and bowling consistently firing on all cylinders, the team went unbeaten from mid-November to early-March and had the title well within in its sights. Unfortunately, a final-day loss to third-placed Lancaster Park Woolston let East Christchurch Shirley Gold slip through the back door and claim their fifth consecutive title. Bugger! Despite it being their best finish in nearly a decade it was nonetheless extremely gutting to go so close that they could smell the fresh coat of silver polish on the trophy, only to come up empty-handed. There is, however, plenty to be encouraged about for next season, especially if the supporting cast can continue to play Oscar-worthy hands to back up the accomplished lead actors. The club faces many challenges in the coming seasons. Not least of which is maintaining (and improving upon) the high standards we have set up until now, both operationally and on the cricket field. These have earned us our status as a Premier-qualified club. A vital component to retaining this status in the ongoing future is having a junior boys section. On this front a big “well done” must go to Graham Curgenven for running the first team we’ve had in this section of the club for nearly two decades.

The next important step to complete the nursery-to-proving ground chain of development is having in place meaningful associations with secondary schools. We are well on our way in this department too. An already-fruitful relationship with Christ’s College has seen us acquire some highly talented young players, such as recent graduates Henry Fisher and James O’Gorman, who have slotted right in at the highest level with aplomb. With potential for more schools to come on board our future as an all-inclusive Premier club will become more secure. Thanks to all the captains, coaches, committee members and players for your patience, understanding and assistance in my first season in the job. I hope your needs were met as best as possible and, if not, that you don’t hesitate to let me know so I can do something about it. I’m certain just about any problem can be solved if the channels of communication are kept open and active at all times. Onwards and upwards to next season. My main wish will be to see at least one of the men’s teams hang in there to the bitter end and bring home the bacon this time around! Duane Pettet PS. Still waiting for that job description AJ ...

Women’s Club Captain’s Report I am happy and proud to report that 2006/07 was an excellent season for the women’s side of the club. The Premier women managed to secure some silverware again by easily winning the Twenty20 competition at the end of the season. They were also finalists in both the one-day and the Super 8 competitions. An excellent achievement, especially by our wider Premier squad players, as we had six players away in the Canterbury Magicians in December and January, of which three went on to New Zealand White Ferns duties and two to New Zealand ‘A’ after that. The Super 8s competition was introduced as a trial this season to prevent lower grades being affected too much by having to supply large numbers of players to the teams above during the representative season. With only four teams in the Premier competition, and three grades in total, there just aren’t the numbers in women’s cricket to absorb the impact of taking out the best 13 players and to keep the full competition running. I think having an eight-a-side competition was a success, as it appears to be part of the program again next season. It sure makes my job easier! The CCA amalgamated first and second grade into a nine-team first grade competition. This gave the teams more variation in opponents, as requested by the players in a CCA player survey at the start of the season. We entered only one team in first grade year and, once again, they endlessly provided players to Premiers while many were away on representative duty. They just missed out on winning the competition, finishing only five points behind East Christchurch Shirley. What a season for the third grade (high school) girls! Coach John Gagliardi not only steered the team to competition victory five weeks before the end of the season, he also managed to successfully introduce a large number of junior players to third grade cricket in the process. This will give the younger girls a lot of confidence when they move to “afternoon cricket” next season. The junior section, or “morning cricket” as we are used to calling it, enjoyed a huge injection of numbers right at the start of the season, mostly from Christchurch South Intermediate. The mainly Year 7 and 8 girls became so keen for cricket that they wanted to play on a regular basis and we were more than happy to accommodate them. After only having one team in that grade last year we quite suddenly had FOUR

teams in the senior one-day girls competition. The “Gold” team took out the top spot, losing only one game all season! We also an eight-a-side team with mainly eight and nine-year olds that played on Friday nights at the Polo grounds. The girls learned lots in their first year of cricket and they ended the season on a real high with their first win. New Members Over the course of the summer many new girls are coerced, coaxed or just keen to give the game of cricket a go. As a club we don't mind if girls or even older women wish to come down to the nets and, if they feel comfortable and think that they might enjoy playing, perhaps have a game or two. Some take to cricket like a duck to water and go on to be quite prominent club players ... or better. One prominent former player who mad a welcome return was Helen Watson, who had been living and playing in Auckland for the past seven years. Others who joined the adult grades last summer included:

Many others had the odd game or filled in here and there, but never really joined the club. Maybe next summer. Players Who Have Left

It is always sad to see members give up or move to another sport. Others move out of the city while some join other clubs for better opportunities. We always encourage girls to get the best possible environment for their own advancement. Players to have left include:

Sam Fitzsimon Myah Guy Shannon Inns

Hannah Johnson Anne Mackechnie Hayley Meads

Sarah Rosanowski Ashley Soper Amy Walcott

Karen Baker (lost interest) Hannah Bibby (moved to Blenheim) Nicola Blue (gave game away) Kerry Foote (unsure why she stopped) Emma Gould (game was too easy for her) Amanda Green (moved back to Auckland) Dahlia McClelland (gave gave away) Claire Marshall (work) Marjolijn Molenaar (returned to the Netherlands) Fiona Wallace (taking a breather) Naomi Wallace (returned to golf) Katie Wilkinson-Baker (moved to rowing) Georgina Wright (gave game away)

Team Summaries Premier - Two-day cricket was completely dropped from the draw this season and, as a trial, the first three rounds of one-dayers were played on artificial pitches. As expected, this gave batsmen a chance to get amongst the runs early on in the season. Sarah Burke scored 108 not out (her maiden Premier century) in the first game and Rowan Milburn scored 105 in the third game of the season, securing two excellent wins and setting us up for a much better, much more consistent season than we’ve had recently. With Helen Watson coming back to the club from Auckland and Beth McNeill returning permanently from Palmerston North after Christmas, there was plenty of quality and experience in the side and that showed throughout the season. Unfortunately we lost both Hannah Rae (overseas travel) and Lisa Brown (injury) after Christmas for the rest of the season. The team made all three finals, just falling short in two of them and comfortably winning the Twenty20 final. Amy “Branch” Satterthwaite scored her maiden Premier century (110) in the one-day final against Lancaster Park Woolston, which unfortunately was lost by 25 runs. Captaincy was shared around with Rowan and “Burkey” away on representative duty a lot. Josie O’Reilly probably had the hardest job, seeing a team full of fill-ins through those games in February when five of our White Ferns/New Zealand ‘A’ players were out and while opposition teams had their Magicians available. “Branch” then took over for the last part of the season, showing excellent promise as a future captain. First Grade - The two first grade teams that we had last year combined into one team this season, creating an interesting mix of young talent (mostly underage Canterbury representatives) and experience (mostly “two dollar wine girls”). The combination proved a success as they won 15 games out of 18, narrowly missing out on the title to East Christchurch Shirley. Being a “feeder” team to Premiers was at times hard, as it meant a different team on the park every week. Well done to the players that helped the Premiers out when the representative players were away. Hope to see you as regulars next season. A big thank you also to the core of players that held this team together and looked after the third graders that came up most weeks to fill the gaps.

Third Grade - A very successful season for coach John Gagliardi and his girls, winning the grade with a 22-point buffer over number two side East Christchurch Shirley in only a four-team competition. Many of the third grade girls have now played plenty of games in first grade and will easily make the transition up next season. Well done and thank you, players AND parents to all for being so supportive and flexible. As mentioned before, this meant that numbers were often made up with girls from “morning cricket” and it was wonderful to see those youngsters’ names popping up regularly on the weekly honours board in the clubrooms as well. Junior Section - Junior convener Chris O’Brien-Smith and I were thrilled with the huge influx of players from Christchurch South Intermediate at the start of the season. There were so many Year 7 and 8 girls that we managed to enter four teams (Gold, Blue, Red and White) in the 12-team senior one-day girls competition. Gear, team shirts, club caps and coaches were organized at short notice and with a few minor hiccups along the way and a number of very helpful parents we had a very enjoyable and successful season. We need parents to help out on Saturdays, so hopefully we can count on your support again next season. The Gold team, which was the most experienced of the four teams, took out the trophy. Many girls got asked to play third grade in the afternoons and they did that very well indeed. I am looking forward to seeing you in afternoon cricket next season! With girls cricket now being run by the same Canterbury Junior Cricket Association as boys cricket, there were other formats available for the different age groups. Our youngest team played in the girls Super 8s competition. They played every Friday night at the Polo Grounds in a neat format where four innings were played in a game instead of just two and that proved a good formula for this age group. The girls made huge progress during the season and ended with their first win on the last playing day. Ever-patient and positive coaches Trudy Rolton and Amy Turner did a great job, thanks you two! All-in-all it was an excellent season with many of our players being selected to represent province and country once again. Congratulations to you all. After two seasons as club captain though, I have also really come to appreciate those who don’t play representative cricket and keep things ticking over for our club when our top players are unavailable. If there is one area that we can improve on next year, I’d have to say it would be our participation on the club scene (cricket club, that is, not night club!), especially on Saturday nights at the clubrooms for team talks. Let the two dollar wine girls lead the way! A big thank you to all players, coaches and parents for your support and I look forward to seeing you all next year.

Top Individual Performances It was a very lean year in terms of star performances by St Albans players this season. Only five centuries were recorded, which is the lowest since 1981/82 (which only had four) and well below the average of around 13 tons a season. The seven six-wicket bags is the equal fewest in the last 32 seasons, with only 2004/05 matching it for paucity. Normally around 17 six-wicket hauls are taken during a season. Four of the five hundreds were scored by women’s players, a complete reversal from last year when all 13 tons were scored by the men. However, the sole male player to hit a century this year stood head and shoulders above all others. Joel Huston’s 163 for the third grade men came in testing circumstances, opening the batting in the second innings and staring at deficit of 79 runs on the scoreboard. His 186-ball knock included 27 fours and one six and was the backbone of a massive team total of 378/8 declared, helping to secure a draw. Stephen Cunis not only took top spot on the bowling charts, but also second place too, with a pair of devastating spells. His 7-26 helped bowl Burnside West University out for a paltry 55 when defending a total of only 110. It is his third seven-wicket haul for the club and his best Premier two-day figures, beating the 7-44 he took in 2000/01. His 6-4 came in the space of just 27 balls against Lancaster Park Woolston, who crumbled from 47/3 to 56 all out in the blink of an eye. Michael Davidson was the only other bowler to record more than one six-wicket bag during the season. He completed a 10-wicket match haul against Marist, taking 11-44 off 30 overs. Of the five batsmen on the list, four recorded their maiden centuries for the club. Only Rowan Milburn had scored one previously, which was also against East Christchurch Shirley, three seasons ago. Three of the bowlers added to their existing tally of six-fors for the club, with Stephen Cunis racking up his seventh and eighth such hauls; Michael Davidson his second and third; and Bryce Hackett his second. There were no hat-tricks by adult members of the club this season, though juniors Ben Norriss and Natalie Cox each performed the feat.

Premier Men

After a couple of close-but-not-close-enough seasons this year’s Premier men’s team was looking to atone for those previous failures. We started with a damp and low-scoring affair against Riccarton in the first round of the one-day competition which, unfortunately, was a preview of what sort of conditions were to lie ahead. The majority of the summer was plagued by damp weather and green decks making for a tough season with the bat. Initially it looked like we might start behind the eight-ball after only managing to score 117. The second half of the match showed the character the team would continue with for the rest of the season with the wickets shared amongst the bowlers and some fine catches being held on to, securing a 34-run win. The next match was the first of the two-day Trophy competition, which is the title all teams covet more than any other, and once again the ball seamed around. After finishing 18 behind Sydenham on the first innings another fight-back was shown, which left us chasing 202 to win. In the end it took a rearguard action from Chris Harris and Ben Langrope to hold out for a draw and share the points. We then suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of a powerful East Christchurch Shirley line-up with Craig McMillan and Michael Papps showing some of the great form they would carry on at first-class level throughout the season. In this match we nearly batted with 10 in the second innings after Angus Bruce decided to do a few household chores after his University exam and made it to the ground in the early afternoon to see the boys in trouble. Watching him walking out to bat with shoelaces and pad straps undone was a real sight! The next two-day match against Lancaster Park Woolston shot us up to the top of the table with a convincing outright win by an innings and 50 runs. Luke Piper scored a gritty half century with Michael Davidson and Richard Hooper leading the charge by taking four wickets apiece in

the first innings. We were always in the box seat and after enforcing the follow-on an injured Stephen Cunis proceeded to take more wickets than steps in his run-up, bagging 6-4 in 4.3 overs mercurial overs. We followed that top-notch performance up with one-day losses to Sydenham and Old Boys Collegians on extremely contrasting pitches with one game having a total of 131 runs scored for 14 wickets and the next a massive 548 runs for 20 wickets. Our Twenty20 campaign, meanwhile, was all over in the space of eight days. We beat Burnside West University before succumbing to eventual winners Riccarton in the semi-finals. We managed to get back in the hunt for a one-day semi-final spot with consecutive wins against Burnside and Marist thanks to strong performances from Chris Harris, Angus Bruce and Dean Bermingham, who each recorded half-centuries, while the bowlers hunted as a pack. The consistency of our bowling unit proved to be a real strength of ours this season. The next Trophy match was a comfortable win over Marist where Michael Davidson managed fantastic match figures of 11-44 on his way to 35 wickets before Christmas. This helped him earn a call-up to the Canterbury first-class side later in the season. Congratulations “Stom”, from the whole team. Stephen Cunis also smashed 61 off just 50 balls after a solid platform was laid by Davidson and Luke Piper. The next two-day game was against Burnside and this was rained out on day one and still very damp on the second morning. After both teams decided to forfeit their first innings and just play for outright points the boys were wondering whether we made the right decision after being rolled for 110. But once again the bowlers stepped up to save the day, led by a consummate performance from Stephen Cunis who took 7-26 to claim victory and keep us on top of the points table. With two games left in the one-day Cup competition we needed to win both against Lancaster Park Woolston and Canterbury Country to make the semi-finals. We needed 213 to win against Park and were looking good with a solid platform of 86/3 but struggled through the middle stages to be all out for 183. This left us needing other results to go our way in order to make the playoffs. The match against Country proved to be the tightest of the season. We scored 211/8, mainly thanks to James O’Gorman (43 not out) and Stephen Cunis (74 of 63 balls). In

reply Country were within five runs of victory when Michael Goldstein, on 55, looked to have won the game in the 49th over when lofting a ball towards the long-on boundary. However, Henry Fisher leapt to grab the ball in mid-air and, as he was falling over the boundary, had the presence of mind to fling it to James O’Gorman (who was fielding 20 metres away at long-off) to complete a brilliant catch. Michael Davidson conceded only three runs bowling the last over to complete a one-run victory in one of the most spectacular finishes to a cricket match. Unfortunately we just missed out on the semi-finals after Lancaster Park Woolston won their final match to take the fourth spot. This left us to focus solely on the two-day competition for the remainder of the season. We drew with Riccarton after being 55 behind on first innings before half-centuries by Stephen Cunis and Ben Langrope helped us set a target of 156. After picking up early wickets it was Riccarton that were in danger of losing outright but they held on at 129/8. The final game before the new-look competition split into top and bottom-four sections was against Old Boys Collegians. We dispatched them by an innings and two runs, thanks in the main to superb all-round contributions from Michael Davidson (seven wickets and an 87-ball 92) and Stephen Cunis (five wickets and 50 off just 22 balls). That left us at the top of the table going into the final section games where we would face fellow top-four qualifiers Sydenham, Riccarton and East Christchurch Shirley to fight it out for the silverware. Sydenham left us a chase of 105 in 31 overs after Stephen Cunis took five wickets in the first innings and Neil Cross four in the second. With time running out we managed to sneak home with just one ball to spare. It meant we were nearly 20 points clear at the top with two games to go and the title tantalisingly within reach. The next game against Riccarton was crucial as they were they only team that was in a genuine position to snatch the trophy from our tentative grasp. Unfortunately, we fell to a seven-wicket defeat despite some gritty second innings batting by Ben Langrope (49 not out) and James O’Gorman (37). Going into the final game against Easts we needed to win both on the first innings and outright to clinch the title. After being set 206 for first innings points we were well placed at 92/4 after James O’Gorman and Luke Piper had laid a solid platform. However a middle and lower-order collapse followed and we were all out for 171. Easts decided to make a game of it and declared on 122/9 after another solid bowling

performance, leaving us needing 157 from just under 40 overs. Chris Harris and Stephen Cunis managed to guide us home to a five-wicket win but the title went to Riccarton by a slim six-point margin, after they had picked up maximum points against fellow top-four team Sydenham. Luke Piper and Stephen Cunis had strong seasons with the bat, scoring 516 and 458 runs respectively. With the ball Michael Davidson was a stand-out, taking 56 wickets before a late season injury slowed him down, while Richard Hooper and Stephen Cunis shared 79 wickets between them. The team is looking in good shape for next season where we hope to go one place better than this season’s disappointing outcome. The bowlers (Cunis, Hooper, Davidson, Langrope and Cross) are capable of consistently fronting up with good performances and young guys like Henry Fisher, James O’Gorman and Ben Langrope showing they are ready to step up and take on more responsibility. Second Grade Men

This season’s second grade side saw the usual flow of players in and out of the team throughout the summer. As expected work and study commitments were the biggest influences and within the club there was a healthy competition between the players in all three top sides. Our overseas players added talent and personality to our side both on and off the field. Joel Tratt and Adam Iyer joined us for the season from the UK and just before Christmas we welcomed Justin Gourlie who had arrived in Christchurch from South Africa. A few of the guys we lost throughout the season were our skipper for the first half of the summer, Andrew Cuttriss - thanks for getting us off to a great start both on and off the field; and Richard Davidson and Dean Marsh left the team for work elsewhere in the country - cheers guys, you’ll be back though! We had several players floating between second and third grade and we were able to offer good support to our Premier side when they needed it. Results-wise the season was satisfactory. We just missed out on a semi-final spot in the one-dayers, which was a little disappointing given the players we had available. However, we can hold our heads high as we would sometimes strike the club whose Premier side had the bye each week, which made for some tough competition. There was often a wealth of players available from the opposing club’s top sides the week of our encounter and who were then suddenly unable to surface the following week due to the supposed reoccurrence of injuries, illnesses and prior engagements. One week there were as many as five players “promoted” the week following our game and the eventual winners of our competition contained accomplished Premier players who were dropped into their second grade side following that club’s demise to the bottom-four of the Premier competition.

Finishing fifth in the one-day competition was not a disgrace by any means. We will work hard on consistency next season, which should see us break through to the semi-finals. We finished fourth in the two-day competition. A minor technicality regarding the type of ball used for a brief period at the start of a match, which had no influence on the final result of the game, cost us 12 points after a protest was lodged. Those points were the difference between finishing in third or fourth place in the end. We played some top cricket and, in patches, showed that we had the ability to beat any side in the grade. When we hit our straps by backing up our bowlers and concentrating for long periods in the field we were a formidable opposition. “Catches win matches” is an old cliché and one that was always emphasised by the top wicket-taker in second grade history, the legendary Bert Walker of Sydenham. He was certainly right in our case. Next season we must work harder on our fielding and learn to stay focused for longer periods. If we can accomplish this the side will go to the next level and be a very real threat to take both competition titles. We will continue to lend good support to our top team and will again see players challenging us for our spots from the third grade side. Everyone is looking forward to the next season and pre-season is not far away now. A special thanks to our coaching staff and committee. There is a great feeling within the club with an excellent squad of players who have created a great culture on and off the field. Bring on the 2007/08 season! Kim Smythe

Third Grade Men

Oops! ... We Did It Again. Alas, the poor St Albans third grade men’s side. We were just hitting our peak at the business end of the season when, like Britney’s hair at the local salon, it all came tumbling down in one of our now-famous meltdowns in the big-money game. It all started so well, as it usually does, with a comprehensive 200-run win over Riccarton, last season's one-day champions. Ben Fair starred on his Saints debut with 91 on a green-top, an innings that would've been worth 130 had the outfield been mown below knee-height - he struck six sixes, which was just about the only way to play! Evergreen campaigner Bryce Hackett’s unplayable spell of 6-9 off 10 overs gave the rest of our team a strong reminder of what we would miss when he took paternity leave later on in the season. We followed up with a similarly facile two-day win over the same opponents, but things quickly got much tougher. The remainder of our one-day campaign was the source of much frustration. On the face of it, the results look poor but don't reflect the competitiveness of the grade and how close we came to beating top-ranked opposition. Lack of killer instinct cost us in the end, letting slip crucial winning opportunities against the Sydenham Predators (losing by one wicket trying to defend a decent total), eventual winners the East Christchurch Shirley Budgies (also by one wicket, with catches and run out chances missed as their last pair added 15 to win it) and finalists Lancaster Park Woolston (by 12 runs, to finally put us out of the running). The tortuous yet exhilarating finishes certainly gave our masochistic team full value for money - this too after having gone a few years with nary a close game to speak of! Luck wasn’t on our side either, with our game against the only truly weak team in the grade being washed out. We would've easily qualified for the final had we shown a little more tenacity to convert those heart-breakers into victories. In the end, our seventh placing reflects a little harshly in the cold light of day. Our two-day campaign was similarly blighted, with our match against the weakest side washed out after establishing a dominant position on the first day’s play. However, an innings victory over Burnside West University in the New Year kept us well on track for the top-four playoffs.

We were again haunted by our ability to choke within sight of victory, this time against Old Boys Collegians. We seemed to dominate the match but without quite completely being able to put them away. Nevertheless, we only needed 132 to defeat a nine-man team and cement a spot in the top four with a round to spare. To be bowled out for 87 was a humbling experience and should be a wake-up call for anyone complacent enough to thinks a game’s over before it’s really over. Never, EVER say never. Needing a good performance against the Budgies to stay afloat, we conceded a significant deficit on the first innings to put our season in real jeopardy. However, day two was the beginning of our revival. Joel Huston produced the innings of the year with an incredible 163, so in-command was he that a double-ton wasn't out of the question for a while. With our backs to the wall, he took full advantage of perfect batting conditions and put a decent quality bowling attack to the sword. His dominance was never better reflected than by the 61 he scored out of a 64-run second-wicket partnership which kick-started the recovery effort. We salvaged a draw to sneak into the top four by the skin of our teeth (or 3.01 points). What followed was the most memorable team performance of the year. Long-time arch-rivals Lancaster Park Woolston, who had in one way or another stood in between us and title success in the previous two seasons, bowled us out for 102. It seemed as if we'd come up short against them for the umpteenth time, only for Matt Lawson to bedazzle their top order with wicked in-swing at good pace. We bowled them out for 83 to grab the first victory by a Saints team over LPW in this grade in well over a dozen years. We had learnt a lesson about defending small totals from that Old Boys game - we kept the faith and were well-rewarded for doing so. Hallelujah! We then took sweet revenge over Old Boys in a re-match in the top-four section. A great all-round team effort secured victory by an innings and 130 runs inside a day - our fourth such success in the last three years. Sadly though, we saved our meekest for last. Needing first-innings and outright victory over the Budgies, we never really did ourselves any justice. We conceded a first-innings deficit of 82, which effectively put us out the game. Try as we might on the final day, they blocked our path and wrapped up a deserved grade double. This grade was harder to win than ever before with the quality of both one and two-day cricket many steps up from previous years. This was never better exemplified than by the Budgies, a second grade team who were forced to go down a grade this season. It is a credit to the CCA's overall revamp that there is now a far greater percentage of games where you can’t afford to just cruise or else you'll get burnt (as we found out to telling effect against Old Boys).

It was great to see an injection of some new, young talent into the team, with players such as Matt Baldwin and Angus McLean showing enough glimpses to suggest bright futures. Key contributions were made by the more experienced players at various stages during the season, namely from: Scott Bermingham and Jonathan Redfern (the top all-round players in the team this season, batting and bowling well in tandem); Dave Guthrie (a wily campaigner who kept on truckin’, no matter what situation he was placed in); Dan Johnston (devastating with the bat - his season tally of 294 runs coming off just 296 balls, including a 25-ball 50 and four sixes in as many deliveries on another occasion); James Kilgour (whose development came on in leaps and bounds, transforming his initial promise into a new-found aggression with the ball in hand, particularly in two-day cricket); Bevan Rich (whose mantra was all about time at the crease, even if the magic wand couldn’t quite produce the quantity of runs he desired); and Kevin Truesdale (who played vital lower-order knocks and was most effective standing up to the sticks, making seven stumpings - the most in the club). Well done to Jonathan Redfern, who edged out Scott Bermingham by the narrowest of margins to win the team's player of the year award. Despite the team having a more stable squad this year than previously, we still went through 35 players this season, which presented a fair challenge in itself. Thanks to the one-or-two-match wonders who helped us out, namely: Andy Bryant, Bjorn Dix, Chris Gibb, Blair Glover, Justin Gourlie, Rowan Muller, Mat Munro, Jonathan Price, Grant Smith, Joel Tratt, Phil Truesdale and Ben Young. They contributed a combined tally of 142 runs at 11.83, nine catches and seven wickets at 29.42. Thanks must go to coach Stephen Cunis for his support and motivation of the side during the season and morning grade selector Alan Jamieson, who had a thankless job in making some hard decisions at times. The spirit within the side was great this season, with the team again proving to be one of the best attendees at club functions. Taking the mickey out of one another during fines sessions was a great way to wind down at the end of a day's play and culminated in a memorable day's paintballing and team knees-up on Good Friday at Matt Lawson's flat. I hope everyone winters well and is ready to take another crack at scratching the 17-year itch that continues to prevent the St Albans name being engraved on a third grade trophy. Personally, after an often-challenging, sometimes-exasperating but always-fascinating three-year stint at the helm I look forward to being able to serve a different role in the side under new, fresh leadership. Can’t wait for ‘07/08! Duane Pettet

Senior B Grade Men

Well, the ‘BBBBs’ struck a couple of snags on our journey this season, however all was not lost and we pushed on as we always do. We achieved an equal third placing in what appeared to be an excellent competition, so that was a mildly satisfying result. However, it could have been different but for some bad luck, unavailabilities and some debilitating injuries (par for the course, though). It would be safe to say that our batting was below our previous standards whilst our bowling remained as steady as ever. Our performance with the bat can be highlighted by the fact we only had six scores of 50 or more during the entire season with no centuries registered. Awardees this year were:

• Player of the year - Dean Read. The ‘Man’ was our rock in the middle order and always put 110% effort into his fielding duties. Loves to yell humorous verbal sprays from the boundary. Go you good thing!

• Bowler of the year - Graeme White. ‘YT’ always bowls like a man who has just been mugged and wants retribution. Total opposite as a person, strangely enough.

• Batsman of the year - Brett Saunders. Solid top-order batsman who gave great value to the BBBBs, scoring heavily with an average of 57. Very grumpy man and not too bad a spin bowler.

• All-rounder of the year - Brent Holland. Hondo can do anything and does it with minimal fuss. Semi-grumpy man.

Some of the more strange events were as follows:

• BBBB Safety Helmet Award - Tony Falloon. While attempting a catch at a shortish cover position he stopped a boundary ... with his head.

• BBBB Carthorse Award - Murray Griffin. Gave away two runs while fielding at short backward square leg. The ball was three metres to his left, however his knee had buckled. Muz was last seen crawling to towards the ball. 100% effort!

• BBBB Mr Grumpy Award - Brett Saunders. Enjoyable verbal sprays to opposition batsmen and their umpires.

• BBBB Harbour Bridge Award - Darren Lowe. Absolutely loves to dive over the cricket ball ... in fact, broke a rib in the process.

The players:

• Danny McCarthy had a good season. Not sure if some of our ‘quick’ bowlers are used to having a keeper standing over the stumps to them yet, but I will get over it!

• Scott Mason still swung the four-piece ball and he will be licking his lips for next season as a two-piecer looks likely.

• Nathan Tikao batted with more thought this year. Combine that with his explosive ability and he will be a handful next year.

• Murray Griffin batted and bowled well this year. Probably held back with a bad knee injury throughout the season, he will rehab over the winter.

• Matt Marr is still the go-to guy when a wicket is needed. Has more ability with the bat than shown this year.

• Graham Curgenven keeps the way he does. Drops the easy ones and takes the screamers.

• Grant Lucas again batted with his customary poise and skill, dashing one minute then subdued the next.

• Roger Ford bowled his typical awkward spells. Sadly, it seems his days with us are numbered, but we wish him well up in Tauranga.

• Tony Falloon bowled a bit and batted a bit. Saved his season with a belting innings on Hagley Oval. Go the Tard!

• Lindsay Cavill has a couple of good digs for the BBBBs and we look forward to his regular presence next season.

Significant events in the lives of our team included:

• Danny McCarthy married Michelle.

• Murray Griffin married Sheryl.

• Roger Ford married Peta.

• Scott and Carolyn Mason welcomed their second baby boy (Cameron) into their family.

• Roger and Peta Ford welcomed their first baby girl (Jamie) into their family.

• Grant and Debbie Lucas welcomed their second baby girl (Lucy) into their family.

As our team matures, we continue to look to the future and our new (key) additions to the team should hold us in good stead going forward. We welcomed into our BBBB bosom Brett Saunders (Jagga), a handy right-arm orthodox spinner who can bat a bit, and Lindsay Cavill (Cav), who looks set to continue after some late appearances, adding value to our top order. Cameo performances (off the bench) came from Brendan Falloon, Pete Drysdale, Andrew Hintz, Duncan Hutton (Slam), Matt James, Luke Palmer, Duane Pettet, Sam Read (son of) and Paul Rivett. I wish to thank you for filling in for us when the time arose. Thanks also go to all the wives and girlfriends of the BBBBs. A special thank you goes out to “Jilly Willy” Broadbent and John Holland (BBBB patron) for your weekly support of the team. It is much appreciated. To me, turning up to play with the above lads is an absolute honour and I doubt I would play in any other team. We enjoy each other’s company, play hard, laugh at each others recent inabilities and have a great day out. It has been this way for 19 years of BBBB cricket and I look forward to more. Thanks guys. See you at cards! Tony Falloon

PS. If you are an ex-BBBB player, please e-mail me at [email protected] as we will be commemorating 20 years of BBBB cricket in 2007/08 with a suitable function and all previous players of our team will be welcome.

Fourth Grade Men

This season’s fourth grade team was the strongest it has been in some years. With an increase in firepower with both bat and ball we had our sights on a grade win but finishing second was a fair result. Our strengths were our positive top order, who always looked to maximise the run rate; and having a bowling attack for which we could confidently set attacking fields, with up to six or seven men in catching positions during limited-overs games. Our regular players were:

• Chris Gibb - opening bat, part-time wicket-keeper, our top run scorer, under-bowled.

• Barry Morris - left-hand opening bat, part-time medium pacer.

• James Berryman - top-order bat, occasional bowler and the team’s leading six-hitter.

• James Alabaster - captain, top/middle-order bat, part-time off-break bowler.

• Matt James - vice-captain, top/middle-order bat, right-arm fast bowler and scarer-of-slip-fielders.

• Mat Munro - top all-rounder, our team’s player of the year.

• Andy Bryant - right-arm fast bowler, useful middle/lower-order batsman, fish impersonator.

• Ben Darch - gloveman and team chauffeur.

• Darryl Harris - right-hand middle-order bat, bowler of full-tosses.

• Ed Winter - slow-medium bowler, one of the leading wicket-takers, needs more practice aiming for buckets.

• Ben Young - right-arm medium-pace bowler, has a really nice bat although took more wickets than scored runs.

• Barry Cox - father, opening bat. Thanks to Gareth Talbot, Andrew Jack, Callum Bailey and everyone else who filled in during the season. The supporters and spectators were always appreciated too. A good fines system resulted in two top booze-ups enjoyed by all. Congratulations to Barry Cox on becoming a father for the first time and to Ben Darch and Chris Gibb for turning 21 during the season. Hope to see you all back in 2007/08.

Fifth Grade Men

This season started with a default, a friendly match and an absolute downpour! That summed up the year for the fifth grade side. Inconsistency and brilliance seem to be the fifth grade way. The high of beating the top side and the low of getting bowled out chasing 64 sums the boys up to a tee. This year we played in a 10-team competition finishing third - though one week after Christmas we led the competition before proceeding to lose six straight. Enough of the moaning. The team played some great cricket and had some great laughs. This was helped by the new blood introduced to the team. Mat Wiseman, Alex Higgins, Tony Norriss and Scott Brooker all brought some new dimensions to the hardened core of the fifth grade side. Mat’s swashbuckling cameos set us on the right path to win games we didn’t look like winning. The Dion Nash bowling look-alike had some great shape to his bowling and troubled many good batsmen outside the off stump. Alex’s 80 not out against the Marist Fozzie Bs was probably the innings of the year. Batting on a wet track and at one stage being 70/5, he helped us reach 253/8 which was a great effort. Alex was probably the unluckiest bowler of the year - Kris Pagan likened him to Ewen Chatfield. The wickets will come, Alex. Tony, the young buck of the team, was for me the most improved player of the year. At the start of the year Tony was struggling with batting and fielding but long hours in the nets and a keen sense for the game helped him play some memorable innings. Tony played his part in a humorous incident too, as explained by Kris Pagan: “The Noddy speech of the year award goes to Matt Sutherland for his ‘running between the wickets’ speech to me during the last match which resulted in calls of ‘Yes. No. Oh shit, sorry about that’ between myself and Tony.” Thanks for that Tony. Scott’s leg-spinners were a great variation to the typical medium-pacers that were bowled. I enjoyed Scott’s cricket knowledge and look forward to seeing his thesis on the subject. I would like to know, Scott,

if you can work out a best case scenario for the fifth grade side - I feel we are a like a freak of nature i.e. immeasurable! Unfortunately, we are set to farewell many of our long-serving players from this season’s squad so I would like to mention a few who have been large contributors on the field. Kris Pagan - has moved to Melbourne. He has done a great job on the statistics for the last three seasons and will be a huge loss. Wickets in Christchurch this season were made for him - wet and low. I’m sure he bowled one under the stumps against Marist! Pat Gallagher - I think he had his best season for the fifth grade team this year and will be sorely missed. Not for his cricket skills though, but for his dry wit and cutting comments. Good luck for the morning grade trials. Dave Wilkinson - our wicket-keeper supreme may be going on an OE next season so can I suggest, Dave, that it may be time to hang up the tracksuit pants before they disintegrate. I may have to wear the gloves next year! Chris McFarlin - made the comment “it was a real shame for the team that I never got to bowl - that’ll teach me for sledging”. It wasn’t the sledging, Chris, it was the fact that you can’t bowl! Good luck with the police force - I won’t be sleeping at night ever again. This season, although stilted with the muck-ups in the draw, which were annoying, I think we all enjoyed the cricket we played. The others who played were all integral to the making of the season and I look forward to another season with fifth grade. The changes to the competition next season should be interesting. Sixth Grade Men

Two seasons ago, after we had finished third, the team was challenged by the President of the club to see if it was within our means to win the grade. After all, we were the engine room of the club and all legends in our own lunchtime. With this in mind we all assembled in early July ‘06 and immediately put everyone on a fitness regime, a skill-based programme and gave them all a chat about the types of healthy food and beverages they should put into their bodies to make them the well-tuned athletes that they would need to be if we were to win the coveted 2006/07 sixth grade title. However, by the start of the season we had lost six of the previous year’s squad and had only gained one new chap. Not a good start. The record book will tell you that we played 14 games, only won six and tied one, for a finishing spot on the table of fourth. We tried everything to be more competitive and win more games, but it just didn’t seem to work. We rotated, rested and reconditioned players, we offered incentives and inducements, we had a bevy of higher-grade players make cameo or guest appearances, we visualised, we moved a player or two on, we even had more coaching, think-tanks and pep talks ... all to no avail. Well! “What did we do wrong?” I constantly ask myself. Our batting order was as brittle as a twig, with only Everton Snell and Phil LeLievre scoring over 200 runs. Not having Everton score his usual mountain of runs was like giving a kiss without a squeeze. Chris Duffy and Dave O’Meara gave good support, but not consistently enough. And for the others we are looking for wider bats with no edges. Remember chaps, if you don’t throw the dice you can never expect to score a six. Our bowling attack was as secure as a man with an umbrella in a storm, with only Nick Groves showing any penetration and dander. Jamie Billings and Nathan Mehaffy bowled well on occasions but. like our batting, you cannot make omelettes without breaking a few eggs. Many pined for bowling opportunities, which the captain bravely ignored (rightly or wrongly) despite constant urgings. Sometimes you have got to choose between tightening your belt or losing your pants, he kept saying.

Well, what do we do? What can we do? What should we do so that next summer we can get this outfit over the line? After much pondering I think we should fall back on the tried and true rules of the original team:

• Rome didn’t become a great empire by having team meetings; they did it by killing all who opposed them.

• If you can stay calm when all around you is chaos, then you haven’t completely understood the seriousness of the situation.

• Eagles may soar, but weasels don’t get sucked into jet engines.

• Teamwork means never having to take all the blame yourself.

• The team beatings will continue until the morale improves.

• Never underestimate the power of very stupid people in the team.

• When the going gets tough, the tough take a drinks break.

• Indecision is the key to flexibility.

• Aim low, reach your goals - avoid disappointment. Finally, we are all looking forward to the new grade that we might be in next summer. New faces and new surroundings will bring with it a new challenge. We accept that some new players will be needed and hopefully some luck might come our way. As Navjot Sidhu once said “There is light at the end of the tunnel for the sixths, but be careful it’s not an oncoming train.” Man on the Sideline

We confess ... That in spite of the care taken in producing this 2006/07 Annual Report,

some mistakes may have occurred. Please accept our apologies.

President’s Grade Men

Successful might be a term used by many to sum up our year - 16 wins, four losses and runner-up by a midget’s tit for the title. However, to me it would have meant fulfilling our true potential had we gone the whole way. With next season already in mind, out come new thoughts about game plans, defence, attack, utilising the right weapons for the right games and also trying to get more consistency from the team ... ‘tis a task with its challenges. But before any of that, we first have to reflect on our efforts of the season just gone:

It started as we know, With two wins in a row, Then a holiday for some, Left us cricketers bar none. So the club climbed back with a win to hold, Oh no, a mixed team against East Shirley Gold! Down but not out, We rallied about, To win three in a row, Now we've something to crow. A Riccarton scalp to lay on the path, “Is this too good?” we began to laugh. Rain then fell for two weeks or more, The next game produced a death-bell draw, So grit our teeth to come back alive, The boys hit the decks and won the next five. Just when we thought we were the grade’s master, We played Sydenham-Hospital and ended up in plaster.

As we tallied up our score for two games more, We found we were ahead by three points galore, A yahoo we sung and against Marist we won, With just one more to even the score. It was a hot day when we went out to bat, The sun was high and the pitch was flat, Though toiling for hours and not much in line, We made a meagre total of one-twenty-nine. Our boys bowled well with not much rejoicin’, Alas a fatal loss against Lancaster Park Woolston, So bury the hatchet we shall all do, And look forward to next season while having a brew!

Barry Slater

President’s grade player of the year Jonathan Price celebrated a great year with the bat by winning both the Cyril Crawford Memorial Cup (most runs in any grade) and Frank O’Brien Memorial Cup (most runs in one grade).

Premier Women

The season started off favourably for the Premier women’s team. White Fern Helen Watson returned home after a stint up in Auckland to help bolster the side as well as increase the average age of the team. Hannah Johnson also joined us from England. Co-captains were Sarah Burke and Rowan Milburn, with Josie O’Reilly and Amy Satterthwaite used as back-ups during the State League and White Ferns series. The first round of the one-day competition was played on artificial pitches, which suited us quite nicely. Two top batting scores were accomplished in the first round - Sarah Burke’s 108 not out and Rowan Milburn’s 105. The first half of the season was tightly contested between the clubs as an abundance of potential representative players filled the teams fighting for a spot in the Canterbury Magicians and various Canterbury age-group sides. Having such a large number of Canterbury players it is always hard to field a competitive team during the representative season. Many thanks must go to all the players who had to step up and play for the Premier team during this time. We know how hard it is not only for you, but your respective teams to have players coming and going week-in and week-out! Also to all the Premier team regulars who had to hold the ship steady, you guys did a fantastic job and it’s great to see some of you really stepping up, showing leadership and putting in some great performances. Thank you to Josie O’Reilly for taking the captaincy in the absence of our Magicians, we know it wasn’t easy! While the Magicians were away between late December and the start of February, “the rest” played a single round-robin Super 8s competition. Unfortunately, the first two rounds got washed out so beating Lancaster Park Woolston in round three was sufficient to get us through to the final against Old Boys Collegians-Country. Chasing 96 to win we started a bit too enthusiastically and lost quick wickets. Showing great composure were Janet Brehaut (33) and Alice Forbes to get us right back into the game. Alas we still fell 12 runs short in the end.

After the Super 8s it was back to the last few rounds of the one-day competition. Without our five New Zealand and New Zealand ‘A’ representatives we suffered two heavy losses against East Christchurch Shirley and OBCC. However, we made a great comeback with a tie against LPW and then a fantastic win over Easts. We won by six wickets chasing 279 thanks to a spectacular 83 from Erin Bermingham, a stylish 78 by Amy Satterthwaite and a great unbeaten 44 from Kadion MacDonald helping to finish it off, supported (again) by young Alice Forbes. This was a real confidence booster for the one-day Cup final versus LPW the following weekend. Both teams were without their New Zealand representatives, who were over in India playing in the quadrangular tournament. This made for a very even final that was hotly contested. LPW managed to make 252/8 with Amanda Dickie the pick of the bowlers with 2-34. St Albans set out confidently chasing the target with Amy Satterthwaite anchoring an end and amassing 110. However, we stumbled with the total within reach, letting the required run rate creep up and all the while losing wickets trying to make up for it. We fell short of the target by 25 runs. To finish off the season we had the newly-introduced Twenty20 competition, which was thoroughly enjoyed by the girls and this showed in our dominance of the competition. We easily won the final at Elmwood Park by 26 runs with OBCC never really in the game. It was a great way to finish the season. Overall we had a successful season with many players reaching higher honours and improving their games. It has been especially great to see the development of up-and-coming players like Alice Forbes who, initially as a fill-in (for 12 games!), was consistent with the ball and kept a cool head when the pressure was on with the bat, so is definitely pushing for a regular spot in Premiers next year! What was also good to see was an improvement in the batting department. Three centuries were scored and five players had averages in the 30s for the season, with three of them nearly averaging 40. Even though we only took out the one trophy, we reached the finals of both other competitions, showing consistency and good depth in the women’s side of our club. Many thanks must go to Nic Wilson for all her hard work organising us each week and making sure we had a full team (not an easy task at times), and also to Ann McKenna for her coaching at the start of the season. First Grade Women

The St Albans first grade women’s side started the 2006/07 season with a merging of the Blue and Gold teams from last year and with big plans in mind! We knew we would have our work cut out for us as we had a lot of different personalities and diverse playing styles so Nic Wilson put Trudy Rolton and Tessa King in charge of the squad. We got the season underway with a hiss and a roar, finding some rhythm in our play as we won all our games up until Christmas quite easily, except one against eventual competition winners East Christchurch Shirley. Kadion “Can I wear spikes on an artificial?” McDonald took apart the opponents with her bowling and Monique Pettet and I had a lot of fun trying to hit almost every ball for four! The inevitable drain on players, due to representative commitments in Premiers, took hold after Christmas and we were forced to call upon our large pool of “fill-ins” (22 in total). The ever-reliable third graders Clare Forbes, Sam Fitzsimon and Shannon Inns became valuable members of our team and these talented youngsters proved they could make the shift to first grade next year with ease. We had our English import Carla Smyth join the team after Christmas and we enjoyed her unique batting style and ever-enthusiastic fielding displays! We only lost three games during the season, two to Easts and the other to Sydenham, and the team felt we were a little unlucky to finish second in the competition. We had a very strong core group of established players and we consistently played as a team every week, while still having time to enjoy the game. Mel Reid improved her batting as the season went on, ending with an average of four. Sarah French took her bowling more seriously this season and did some damage with her left-arm, wrong-footed hop, skip and jump technique. She also combined with Monique Pettet for an amazing relayed direct-hit run out in the last game of the season. Considering Moni hadn’t been remotely close to hitting the stumps (or even the pitch) all season, we were all stunned with the athleticism displayed by both involved. Needless to say a few $2 wines were drunk that night! With all that said, roll on 2007/08 when we can regain our former glory and return the first grade trophy to our clubrooms, where it belongs! Third Grade Women

Our season started at the end of August 2006 with pre-season training/trials at the CCA indoor facilities. Most of the girls had played together the previous season and were joined by Aimee Walcott, Myah Guy, Sam Fitzsimon and Shannon Inns. Clare Forbes was elected team captain by the players with Sarah Gagliardi acting as vice-captain. Unfortunately for us, but fortunately for first grade, Clare was selected to play for their team after Christmas, leaving Sarah to take over the captaincy. During the season we played 15 matches, winning 13 and losing only two, which left us as runaway winners of the grade. There were many highlights to look back on such as Sam Fitzsimon scoring 102 not out against Riccarton and Natalie Cox taking five wickets against Sydenham. Throughout the season 19 players were used. Sam also moved up to first grade following her century. This allowed for many morning junior players to move up on a regular basis to afternoon play, which gave them a taste of things to come. Twelve of the 19 players who played third grade were also selected for either the under-17 or under-15 Christchurch Metro Red or Black teams or, in some cases, for both teams, in tournaments in Timaru and Ashburton. Our leading batsmen were Sam Fitzsimon with 238 runs, Sarah Gagliardi with 156 and Aimee Walcott with 121. Leading bowlers were Natalie Cox with 22 wickets, Sarah Gagliardi and Olivia Duckmanton with 18 wickets each. My special thanks to Nicola Wilson for her support and great work she has done for our team and Hannah Johnson who took team practices on Thursdays at 4pm. This team was eager to learn and made my position as coach easier as the season progressed. The 2007/08 season beckons, with two or three players moving up to first grade and several coming up from the under-15 Saturday morning grades to take their places. John Gagliardi

Junior Boys This was our first year at St Albans, having moved from Old Boys Collegians prior to the start of the season, and what a year it was too. We were a player short on opening day but were lucky enough to pick up a new recruit prior to our first game. So, after a few training sessions and having gotten neatly decked out in our new uniforms, we were ready to let battle commence. We won our first eight games without a hitch and in all won 13 of our 16 games played - most quite convincingly - and lost one game by only two runs. A few highlights from during the season were: being elevated from junior one-day to senior one-day status with five weeks of the season still to play and winning the first three games (the first against “a bunch of giants”, so said one of the boys prior to the start of the game); a hat-trick by Ben Norriss; some outstanding batting performances by Dan Gillespie (56 not out), Mac Bolderston (37 not out), Ben Curgenven (36 not out) and Shuaib Ahmed (33 not out) - bearing in mind that batsmen must retire after 45 legitimate balls; and equally impressive bowling figures from the likes of Dan Gillespie (4-16), Shuaib Ahmed (3-0), Mac Bolderston (3-4) and Ben Norriss (3-6) - again, each bowler is allowed a maximum of three overs. Either through outstanding batting, bowling, fielding, commitment or a combination of these, everyone in the team received (and deservedly so) the player of the day award at some stage during the season. Awards were given on prize-giving night to Mac Bolderston (bowler of the year - also a great wicket-keeper/batsman), Daniel Gillespie (batsman of the year), Ben Norriss (most improved) and Zak Solomon (all-rounder of the year). Others in the team who have not been mentioned but who gave 100 percent throughout the season and, on occasions, had outstanding performances were: Sam Harris, Justin Thorby, Asher Etherington and Mitchell Rodwell. A special mention must also go to the parents who turn up week after week to support, encourage and score for our team. Having coached junior boys for the last six years I can honestly say that this is an outstanding bunch of boys - both in commitment, ability and dedication to the sport. A shame we weren't playing for points as we would have won the competition hands down! Graham Curgenven

Junior Girls I would first like to take the opportunity of thanking the girls who participated with a high level of enthusiasm and commitment during the season. Of particular note a number had not played cricket before and watching their development over time was personally very rewarding. I would also like to acknowledge those girls who always turned up to practice and played every game. Secondly, I wish to thank the parents and caregivers who actively supported and assisted their daughters to play cricket as well as help with the logistics of getting gear bags to games. Without you we would not have been able to field the number of teams we did. Finally, the club is indebted to the various coaches - Trudy Rolton and Amy Turner (Super 8s), Joel Tratt (Senior Blue), Alice Forbes (Senior White), Adam Iyer (Senior Red) and Sarah Parker (Senior Gold); the parents/caregivers who assisted on Saturday mornings with managing, umpiring and scoring - in particular Geoff Soper, Robin Meads, Alice Forbes and Brian Fenwick; and Nic Wilson for all the support and mentoring to help me get through the season which, at times, was somewhat personally challenging. In the detailed history of the St Albans Cricket Club (first published in February 2005) it notes that the strength of the women’s side of the modern club has always been impressive. It is pleasing to see that this continues to be reflected with the recent announcement that a record five St Albans players have been picked in New Zealand women’s teams. In order for the club to achieve at the women’s level it is important that we develop and maintain a strong schoolgirls section. The 2006/07 season delivered against this goal. Although we were somewhat surprised to see a return to earlier years of large numbers playing junior girls cricket for St Albans, we quickly rose to the challenge by organising gear, coaches and managers for the five girls teams and things bedded down well as the season progressed. A pleasing achievement was to see that out of 48 girls chosen for the CJCA Cricket Express Christchurch Regional Tournament in November 2006, 14 of them (30%) were from St Albans. Congratulations to Anne Mackechnie, Georgia Worsdale, Kimberley Rattray, Natalie Cox, Shaylyn Collins, Ashley Soper, Hayley Meads, Lexie Walker, Courtney Reid, Alyssa Sherriff, Casey Lloyd, Elsie Enoka, Harriett Wisker and Roseanna Wilson for being selected. Ashley, Natalie and Lexie also went on to be selected for the March 2007 tournament.

This year we fielded one Super 8s team of quite young and inexperienced girls, who played against five other club sides on the artificial pitches at the Polo grounds on Friday evenings. Our team learnt heaps, had lots of fun and even recorded a terrific win in one of the later games. Those that played in the Super 8s team were: Rachel Sloan, Melissa Sloan, Lauren Dabner, Victoria Wratt, Hannah Moston, Taylor O’Brien-Smith, Alyssa Tahuhu, Taylah Pawson and Eleyna Ridder. The other four sides played in the senior one-day girls’ grade on a Saturday morning. There were 12 teams in this grade, with games starting at 9am and being played at an even split of home and away venues. The Senior One-Day Blue girls played 14 games for four wins. The team members were (those that won the team awards are shown with their award in brackets): Laura Spivey, Alice Timings, Hannah Dolan, Ruby Parfitt, Gill Afualo, Grace Moore (best bowling), Elsie Enoka (best batting), Roseanna Wilson and Danielle Fenwick (most improved). The Senior One-Day Gold girls played 13 games for 12 wins and only one loss. This team had a terrific season and, not surprisingly, won the grade. Congratulations girls. This brought to six the number of wins by St Albans teams in this grade since its inception in 1992. The team members were: Alyssa Sherriff, Anne Mackecknie, Molly Lockington, Casey Lloyd, Cassie Stewart, Kimberley Rattray (best batting), Natalie Cox (best bowling), Nicole Sloan and Javarna McNaught (joint most improved). The Senior One-Day Red girls played 12 games for four wins and a tie. The team members were: Tessa Hobbs, Ashleigh Findlay, Hayley Meads, Mackenzie Soper, Georgia Worsdale, Jessie Ahearn, Rebecca Buist, Shaylyn Collins (best batting), Ashley Soper (best bowling) and Chanelle Rosenbrock-Kavanagh (most improved). The Senior One-Day White girls played 12 games for three wins and a tie. The team members were: Harriett Wisker, Hannah Thomas, Courtney Reid, Amelia Hopewell, Emelia Sanders, Ayla Siave, Kate Johnson, Kathryn Gordon (best batting), Lexie Walker (best bowling) and Courtney Reid (most improved). All-in-all there were 18 Saturdays scheduled for cricket during the season, of which four were cancelled due to poor weather and ground conditions.

Next summer will see quite a few of the girls named above move up to the secondary school competition (third grade) with a 1pm start. This will be a big challenge but we are sure that, like all the girls that have moved up a grade in previous seasons, you will enjoy the experience, hopefully have plenty of success and, above all, have lots of fun. More morning grade girls will be needed to replace those going up to third grade, so if you have friends or schoolmates that might like to play, get them to ring me. Good luck in your winter sport and I hope to see you all in October, keen and enthusiastic for another summer of cricket. Chris O’Brien-Smith

Notes to the Financial Statements for the year ended 31 May 2007 Note 1 - Statement of Accounting Policies

St Albans Cricket Club is a non-profit organisation. The financial statements are general purpose and prepared in accordance with generally accepted accounting practice. Unless otherwise stated the accounting principles recognised as appropriate for the measurement and reporting of earnings and financial position on a historical cost basis have been followed. The entity qualifies for differential reporting because the Club meets the framework for differential reporting as the Club is not publicly accountable and is small. The club has taken advantage of all differential reporting exemptions. Changes in accounting policies: Except for the allocation of depreciation on Fixed Assets introduced in the 2000 year there have been no changes in accounting policies which have been applied on bases consistent with those used in previous years. The following specific accounting policies which materially affect the measurement of financial performance and financial position have been applied: Accounts Receivable are stated at their estimated realisable value. Debts which are considered uncollectible are written off. There is no other provision for doubtful debts. Stock on Hand - Bar Supplies has been valued at lower of cost or net realisable value. Stock on Hand - Balls has been valued at lower of cost or net realisable value. Sponsorship: Sponsorship for services rendered to the club are accounted for as revenue and expense at values approximating the cost of the service provided. Where applicable the prior year results have been amended accordingly. Property, Plant and Equipment are stated at cost less accumulated depreciation. Depreciation has been calculated using the rates shown in the Property, Plant and Equipment Schedule (Note 2). Material, Nets and Junior Material have not been depreciated as the committee charges all repairs, maintenance and replacements to expenses. A mortgage security over the pavilion is held by Westpac Banking Corporation. At 31 May 2007 there were no advances drawn against this security (2006 - nil). Related Party transactions: The Committee are also members of the Club and pay subscriptions on the same basis as other members. Services provided have been supplied on normal commercial terms. Note 2 - Property, Plant and Equipment

Note 3 - Sponsorships The sponsorship of $6,800 (2006 - $6,300), is in respect of audit fees and a lease of a motor vehicle used by the professional coach. Note 4 - Capital Commitments There were no capital commitments at balance date (2006 - nil). Note 5 - Contingent Liabilities

There were no contingent liabilities at balance date (2006 - nil).

Treasurer’s Report The accounts presented to members record a surplus of $3,467 for the year. It is a relief to be able to report a surplus and we have successfully turned around the deficits of the two previous years. Expenses were kept under tight control although we did make a large purchase of new balls as a result of a gaming machine donation and some stock of balls has been carried over to next season and we have reflected this stock in our accounts for the first time. We have also reflected in the accounts as revenue and as an expense some key services donated to the club. These include the cost of audit, the loaner vehicle for our coach, and a CCA subsidy on last year’s ground rentals. The prior year figures have been amended accordingly. We believe this more accurately reflects the total cost of the services provided to members. Bar trading was substantially up on last year and we are grateful for the off-field support and social activity of all our members, but in particular, our overseas guests. It was also generous of Duane to share his spare “bedroom” to allow club members to carry on their socialising into the night. This year we received very good support from the Gaming Machine Trusts and we are very grateful to Eureka Trust and Caversham Trust for their generous support. It does highlight the heavy reliance we are under, along with almost every amateur sporting club in New Zealand, to obtain funding from gaming machine funding charities. The committee has decided to recommend a further increase in subscription levels for this coming season. They were held at the old level for two seasons but we cannot provide the quality of services necessary to maintain this club at the highest level without a further modest increase.
