Asarco, last week, had more than 90,000 pounds of copper anodes returned to them following a traffic stop by the Arizona Department of Public Safety. According to DPS Public Information Officer R. Molina, on Sept. 27, 2012, officers made a traffic stop

on I-10 near Casa Grande and found 48 anodes in a commercial vehicle trailer. Each one weighs approximately 880 pounds. The discovery at the traffic stop led DPS investigators to a residence in the 6300 block of West Tangerine Road in Marana with a search warrant. Officers

located 54 more copper anodes and seized three truck tractors and semi-trailers, a fork lift and two hand carts, according to a news release. Representatives from Asarco in Hayden identified the copper anodes at the scene. The copper was valued at

Lena Ochoa BakerSeptember 4, 1963 - September 7, 2012

On September 11, 2012 a funeral mass was celebrated at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Tucson, where a few hundred family, friends and co-workers gathered to

pray for our cousin Lena Ochoa Baker, daughter of Della Soqui Ochoa of Tucson and the late Albert Ochoa.

Lena and her family lived in the Winkelman Flats and at the age of nine they moved to Tucson where she graduated from Flowing Wells High School and was employed

by Tucson Medical Center. Lena has two sons, Robert (24) and Zachary (20) who both live in Tucson. As Lena watched her sons grow from small boys to young adults, she ensured that they took the time to enjoy life to its fullest. She would take them on fishing trips, supported their athletic events and provided them with unconditional love. Lena was so very proud of her young men and didn’t hesitate to share her joy.

Lena’s siblings are brothers Marty, Gilbert (Judy), a sister Catalina (Anthony Ortiz) and the late Robert Ochoa. She was a loving Tia, Godmother, Grandmother and

friend to all of her nieces, nephews, Godchildren and Granddaughter. They will miss her special hugs, kisses and advice she so graciously gave.

Lena and her fiancé, Paul Mariscal, enjoyed spending time together with their “Compadres” and this past summer enjoyed vacations where they strengthened

their friendships and added to the long list of wonderful memories. Special memories also include attending U of A football games and her love of the Wildcats. She was the “Ultimate Wildcat Fanatic”. The rivalry between the Cats and the Devils will never be the same!

Holidays and special occasions were always spent with her Mother and her three aunts, Millie Soqui, Lupe Cardenas and the late Becky Vigil. These special ladies

brought years of countless wonderful memories and guidance in Lena’s life.

Lena also loved to cook and had many specialties, one of which was her award winning green corn tamales. She was also very giving of her time and when asked to help

with a wedding, birthday party, graduation or just a backyard BBQ, she was more than willing to lend a helping hand.

Lena’s smile and laughter were known the minute she walked

in the door. Her ability to take a bad situation and make it a positive one was a testament to her faith, wonderful character and ability to connect with people.

Lena will be missed by all, but her memory will live forever.

We Love You Lena and May God Bless You Always!

Forever in our hearts,

By Vicki Clark Kearny’s newly hired Interim Chief of Police Bob Ingulli is not new to Kearny. In fact, he served as Chief of Police 12 years ago. He is familiar to Kearny and is very excited to be here again to serve the community. When he learned that Kearny needed some help, he was more than willing to step up and answer the call. Ingulli was hired to take over for Chief Joe Martinez, who was placed on administration leave earlier this year. Interim Chief Ingulli duties include full time responsibilities of the chief of the department. He is also a working chief who fulfills patrol duties in rotation. Before coming to Kearny Ingulli served as Chief of Police in Florence for 12 years. His started his career in law enforcement with the New York Police Department in 1974. While with NYPD he

was with the Transit Department where he worked patrol and was a detective. He attained the rank of Patrol Sergeant and Detective Sergeant and retired in 1995 as a Lieutenant. After retirement he and his wife headed west and ended up in Tucson where he went to work for the Tucson Police Department serving as a patrol officer, on the walking beat, and as a detective. He said although KPD has been functioning well, he would like to make some improvements focusing on the image and perception of the department. “We’re working on updating forms and putting into place administrative ways of getting things done to present a more professional image,” Chief said. “We also want to reinsure the community that we can improve.” He added that he is big on community involvement and believes citizens

interacting with the police is key to having a safe place to live. He wants to re-instate the Block Watch program and expand the VIP program. “I very much appreciate what the volunteers have been doing, but I would like to actively recruit more people to get involved by offering more duties,” Chief said. Those duties would include more patrol, a home alone program for kids, securing crime scenes, traffic assistance, administrative assistance, fingerprinting and dispatchers assistance. He also embraces an open door policy and welcomes ideas to help the department better serve the community. “Just call me or drop by,” Chief said. He added he very much appreciates the opportunity to serve Kearny. “I enjoy this town with all the nice folks…Kearny has always had a place in my heart,” he said.

By Nolberto Waddell The football game against the Sentinels of the Arizona School for the Deaf and Blind turned out to be a runway for the Lobos. It did not take long for the Lobos Erik Rivera to find the end zone scoring on a long 56-yard run on the second play after the kick-off. The two-point try failed for a 0 to 6 lead at 11:24 of the first quarter. The Lobos kicked off holding the Sentinels to three plays and a punt and on the second play after the punt the Lobos hit pay dirt again this time on a 38-yard run by Aaron Lagunas who was playing in the injured Adrian Ochoa position. Lagunas got the call again on the two-point try to give Hayden a 14 to 0 lead. After holding the Sentinels to three plays and a punt, the Lobos nemeses raised its ugly head again; bad snaps and fumbles, to stop their next dive forcing a punt. The Lobos again held the Sentinels to three and a punt and again after the punt Erik Rivera took off on a 40-yard romp for a touchdown and Roman Padilla converted on the two-point play to give Hayden a 22 to 0 lead with 3:14 left in the first quarter. The Hayden coaches had seen enough and gave the reserves their chance to play and they responded well. They gave up a long run to

the Sentinels with 2:18 in the first period scoring on a 43-yard run and took the ball over for the two points to cut the Lobo lead to 22 to 8 as the first quarter ended. The young Lobos did a good job in the second quarter extending the lead to 46 to 8 on two long Lagunas runs and a 24-yard touchdown by Antonio Medina and a safety by Lobo defensive player Manny Armenta. The Sentinels did not give up getting to the young Lobo defense with a 75-yard pass and run play that had the Lobos missing several tackle attempts. The two points cut the Lobo lead to 46 to 14. The long scoring play must have woken up the Hayden players. After the kick-off, Lagunas again took the handoff and took off on a 60-yard romp almost untouched for another touchdown. With the two-point play unsuccessful, the Lobos took a 46 to 14 lead as the first half ended. The second half started with the young Lobos still on the field. The Lobos kicked off to start the third quarter, caught the Sentinels trying to trick the young Lobos on a fake punt attempt that cost them when Lagunas again took the first play had-off and went on a 26-yard run for a touchdown with Medina getting the two points to up the Hayden lead

to 60 to 14 and now a running clock on the field with the 42 point rule in effect. The Lobos kicked off again, held the Sentinels to three plays and they again tried a fake punt attempt on fourth down only to be stopped by Louis Dominquez for no gain at the 25-yard line. After two plays and the football still at the 25 yard line, Antonio Medina took the handoff and broke a couple of tackles on his way for a 25 yard touchdown run and the two point run after another fumble by the Lobos was good to up the Hayden lead to 68 to 14. The third quarter soon ended with the running clock and the Sentinels on a drive. The Sentinels punched the

By Richard Bravo The Pima Roughriders went into last Fridays contest with an undefeated record. Unfortunately, they would leave Dave McFee Memorial field without a loss getting a huge win over the Ray Bearcats 67-20. The Roughriders jumped on the Bearcats early in the game scoring on their first possession on a 30 yard run to take an early 8-0 lead. The defense of the Roughriders held the Bearcats to a three and out on their first try at offense to force a punt. A bad snap on the punt allowed the Roughriders to get the ball back in Bearcat territory. Pima took advantage of the turnover getting a quick score on the first play from scrimmage on a 44 yard run taking a 14-0 lead with 8:06 left in the first. On the ensuing kickoff, the Roughriders recovered the ball on the Bearcat 28 yard line when the Bearcats had some miscommunication on who was getting the ball. The turnover was costly for the Bearcats when the Roughriders found the end zone once again on a quarterback keeper from 28 yards out extending the lead to 22-0. The Roughriders scored two more times in the quarter on a blocked punt that was recovered in the end zone and another on a 72 yard run to give them a commanding 36-0 lead at the end of one quarter of play. The second quarter was a different story as the Bearcats held the Roughriders scoreless. The Bearcats offense came alive on a big fourth down play when quarterback Destry Yocum connected with receiver Dominic Bravo on a 70 yard touchdown pass to put the Cats on the board. Trailing 36-6 with time winding down in the first half the Bearcat offense capped an 85 yard drive with a 20 yard touchdown pass from Yocum to Bravo to give the Bearcats some momentum going into the locker room trailing 36-12

By Nolberto Waddell The Lady Lobo volleyball team had a busy week play-ing three scheduled matches, two of the matches away games, and then headed to Pima on the weekend to play in the Lady Roughrider Vol-leyball Invitational. The Lady Lobos’ first match was against the Lady Mon-soons of Mesa Prep on Mon. on their court. The first set was a close affair; with the score tied at 19 to 19, Marl-isse Perez went to the service line and put some distance in the score. The Lady Lobos finally took the first set with a 25 to 20 score. The second set was a bit easier for the Lady Lobos when Melinda Marinez went to the service line and put the

set away with nine straight service points to win the set 25 to 9. The third and final set had Danielle Paton and Marlisse Perez doing the damage from the service line with their serves as the Lobos took the third set and the match with a 25 to 19 score. The Lady Lobos were on the road again on Tues. making the long haul to Ft. Thomas to try to even their record against the Lady Apaches who earlier in the season handed the Lady Lo-bos a five set defeat. This match was almost identical as the first. The Lady Lobos took the first set, playing good volleyball talking and defending well, with a score of 25 to 20. The

Lady Apaches came back in the second set taking a big 4 to 12 lead early in the set and never looked back not allow-ing the Lobos to land their serves in the 15 to 25 win. In the third set, the Lady Apaches took a 19 to 23 lead after two rounds of serves and looked like they were on their way to another win but the Lady Lobos would have no part of it as they played hard and took the win 26 to 24. The fourth set was equally exciting with both teams playing hard. After two rounds of serving and the Lady Lobos in command with a score of 24 to 22, the Lady Apaches fought back and took the fourth set to tie the match at two sets apiece

with a 24 to 26 win. The fifth and final set seemed like neither team wanted to win as both kept breaking each other’s service until the last when the Lady Apaches finally took a 6 to 11 lead after a round of serv-ing and took advantage of the Lady Lobos inability to land their serves to win the fifth set and the match with an 11 to 15 score. The Lady Lobos next match was against the always-hard playing Lady Vandals of Mi-ami High School. The Lady Lobos played equally hard taking care of business in the first and third sets winning with lopsided scores of 25 to 14 and 25 to 13 and played equally hard in the two lost sets dropping the second set

Lady Lobos win two of three matcheswith an 18 to 25 score and the fourth set with a 20 to 25 score to set up the exciting fifth set. In the fifth set, the Lady Vandals broke out to a 1 to 6 lead early in the match when the Lady Lobos could not land a serve. After one round of serving the Lady Vandals had a com-manding 5 to 10 lead and extended it to 9 to 12 when Marlisse Perez went to the service line and hit for five straight service points to give the Lady Lobos another hard fought win with a fifth set score of 15 to 12 to defeat the Lady Vandals for the second time this season. The Lady Lobo JV were not as lucky uncharacteristi-cally losing two of their three matches. The Lady Lobo JV dropped their match against the Monsoon JV in three sets with scores of 18 to 25, 25 to 12 and 12 to 15. Maybe it was the long hot trip or the sitting at a traffic stop for construction for a long time that affected them

but the Lobo JV did not play their usual hard game drop-ping the match to the Apache JV in two sets with scores of 19 to 25 and 12 to 25. The Lobo JV were back in form for their match against the Miami Lady Vandal JV easily defeating the Vandal JV in two sets with lopsided scores of 25 to 13 and 25 to 13. There was no report on the outcome of the Lady Lobos trip to Pima for the Lady Roughrider Invitational on Saturday. The Lady Lobos have two matches scheduled for this week playing the Lady Braves of San Carlos on Tues. Oct. 2, 2012 and board the bus for a trip to Coolidge to take on the Imagine Prep team on Thurs. Oct. 4. The Lady Lobos were scheduled to have the follow-ing week off for fall break but will travel to Superior on Tues. Oct. 9 for the makeup of the Sept. 5 match that was postponed because of dam-age to the Superior court.

The Blazers traveled to Jesse Owens Field for a doubleheader late Sat. night, their opponent this past weekend the Saguaro Vipers. The Blazers started a little slow with a slim 2-0 lead going into the second inning. Working hard at building a lead every inning the

Blazers shook off the rust in the fifth scoring five runs to end the game with the run ahead rule 12-0. On the mound Daniella Hinojos (4K/0W/0ER) two innings, Nikki Baldenegro (1K/0W/0ER) relieving for two innings, and Brianna Galarza (0K/0W/0ER) closing pitch a shutout

together. Offensively the team was lead by Emma Alvarado (2-4, triple), Daniella Hinojos (2-4, double), Tara Lorona (1-4, triple), and Julie Meza (1-4, double). After a short break, the Blazers were back on the diamond hoping to keep pace with the first

game. The Blazers started strong and finished strong, scoring four runs in each of the first three innings before being shut down 1-2-3 in the fourth inning for a 12-4 win. On the mound Daniella Hinojos (6K/0W/0ER) for three innings and Brianna

Blazers post two more wins, raise record to 7-1

By Vicki Clark Citing concerns about a re-cent rise in Copper Basin area citizens’ requests to wire large amounts of money, Mark Romo, manager of Bank of the West in Kearny, wants to warn the public about fraudu-lent schemes and scams. “I understand that in the cur-rent economy people would get excited to think that they have been given an oppor-tunity to claim vast amounts

Beware of scams in the Copper Basin areaof money,” Romo said. “But people must ask themselves if the offer makes sense...where the offer comes from and why me?” No legitimate company, lot-tery or inheritance requests that you send money to get money. It’s a scam, whether it’s by phone, e-mail or regular mail, it’s still a scam Romo said. The most frequent scam comes in the form of a check. The sender will ask you to de-posit the check and then wire a certain amount of money after which you will receive what they say you have com-ing. The check is fraudulent and will not clear and you will lose what was sent. Another is a request that money be sent in order to pay taxes on an inheritance or on lottery winnings. Don’t do anything until you check it out. “We want to protect our customers and strongly sug-gest people do their research and become aware that these things are out there,” Romo said. The best policy is that if it doesn’t sound right and seems too good to be true, then it’s likely not true. You’ve heard it a million times, please re-member it. Here are several links that identifies fraud and offers ad-vice The first is to the Federal Trade Commission, they are the agency that people could report these types of fraudu-lent activity to. It is a very good resource to find out about protecting yourself from being a victim of fraud FTC.gov. The second link is to the FBI and shows a great poster that basically sums it up in regards to scams FBI.gov.

football over the goal line for another touchdown, scored the two points to cut the lead to 68 to 22. The Lobos fumble problems continued. On the fi rst play after the kick-off the Lobos turned the football over on a fumble and the Sentinels were on the drive again against the young Lobos scoring again on a one-yard plunge and with the two points now had cut the Lobo lead to 68 to 30. That would be all of the scoring for the game as the Lobos took the kick-off and ran the time off the running clock for the 68 to 30 win over a scrappy ASBD Sentinel team that showed no giving up despite the lopsided score. It took the Lobo offense only forty offensive plays to rack up 405 yards of total offense for the game led by Erik Rivera who rushed for 138 yards on only six carries, Aaron Lagunas who rushed for 163 yards on nine carries and Antonio Medina who had 58 yards on six carries. Rivera and Medina each had two touchdowns, each had a two point run and each suffered a fumble. Lagunas scored four touchdowns also had a two-point play and suffered a fumble. Francisco Delgado and Jacob Manriquez also have to carry the football for the Lobos. On defense, the Lobos held the Sentinels to 224 total yards on 63 plays from scrimmage with Francisco Merino, Robert Sandoval and Manny Armenta leading the

way on the tackle chart with linebacker Rodney Ortiz also turning in a tough game with seven tackles and two pass defl ects. Sixteen of the eighteen players that suited up for the Lobos recorded tackles on defense. The Lobos next assignment will be a tough one when the Tigers of St. David High School come to Lalo Serrano Lobo Stadium for the Lobos homecoming game. The Tigers are highly ranked in the Division VI standings. The game is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. kick-off but there will be many activities earlier in the day with the homecoming parade scheduled for 4:00 p.m. and a tailgate party following the parade. If the Lobos are up for the game, they should give the Tigers all they can handle and maybe more.

By Richard Bravo The Ray Junior High Football team traveled to San Carlos last Tues. and walked away with a win in a high scoring affair. The Junior Cats piled up 310 yards of total offense and had nine touchdowns in a 68-52 win over the Braves. The fi rst quarter the Junior Cats scored twice on a pass and run play as quarterback Cole Yocum had a 18-yard

run and running back Jonah Cude added a 27-yard run to give the Junior Cats a 16-0 lead. In the second quarter, the Junior Cats kept the ball on the ground getting another touchdown on Paul Michael Wormwood’s 37-yard run to put the cats up 24-0. Wormwood struck again on defense as he intercepted the Braves quarterback and ran it 28 yards for another Cats

touchdown to extend the lead to 32-0. The Braves didn’t go away and got on the scoreboard on a huge run of 72 yards to slightly trim the lead to 32-8. On the ensuing kickoff returner Fabian Valenzuela nearly ran it 80 yards for the score, but was brought down 4 yards shy of the score. This set up a 4 yard run by Wormwood to bring the score to 40-8 late in the fi rst half.

Junior Cats dominate Braves 68-52 The Braves added another score on a 15-yard pass right before the half to head into the locker room trailing 40-

at the half. The second half of the game was all Roughriders as they score thirty-one points. The Bearcats offense struggled getting their only score of the half on a 54 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Yocum to receiver Jacob Wernett. Although the Bearcats were unable to overcome the high powered offense of the Roughriders, they played a tough physical game all the way down to the fi nal second. The loss brings the Bearcats record to (3-3) overall and (3-2) in conference play.

Offensively for the Bearcats, Yocum completed 13 of 29 passes for 234 yards and three touchdowns. Clarence Baptisto rushed for 19 yards on 7 carries. Receiving, Bravo had six catches for 121 yards and two touchdowns, Wernett had fi ve catches for 97 yards and a touchdown. Defensively the Bearcats were led by Wernett with eight tackles and two assist, Yocum and Rexx Sosa with 7 tackles and two assist each, and Jacob Pace with fi ve tackles and one assist. ball into the end zone. The ball was quickly recovered by Chandler Coleman for the fi rst score of the half bringing the score to 48-16. On the Apaches next possession, they coughed up the ball once again and fumbled the ball on their 10-yard line. Linebacker Yocum scooped up the ball and ran it into the end zone for yet another score giving the Junior Cats a demanding 54-16 lead. The Braves added two more scores themselves to cut down on the Cats lead halfway through the third trailing 54-28. With lead

shortened to 26 points the Junior Cat offense rumbled back getting two more scores on runs of 72 and 12 by Wormwood to end the third quarter with a score of 68-28. The fourth quarter saw the younger Junior Cats on the fi eld getting their feel for the game. Getting some experience under their belt the Junior Cats played excellent against the Braves starters. The Braves got a few scores in the fourth quarter but, it still was not enough for the win as the Junior Cats came

away with the 68-52 Victory. The Bearcats offensively did a solid job. Yocum had 5 passes for 91 yards on 6 attempts. Leading rusher Wormwood ran for 141 yards on 6 carries. It’s as easy as going to ServiceAri-zona.com and clicking the link for voter registration. “It’s every citizen’s duty to participate in our representa-tive democracy,” said Board of Supervisors Chairman David Snider. “There is no reason

why we shouldn’t have a 90 percent or better turnout in this election. It all begins with reg-istering to vote and becoming informed about the candidates and the issues.” Pinal County Recorder Laura Dean-Lytle added that there are roughly 74,000 residents who are either on the perma-nent early voting list or who have requested an early ballot for the upcoming election. “It’s becoming a very popular form of voting,” said Recorder

Dean-Lytle. “Early voting begins on Thurs., Oct. 11 and the deadline to request an early ballot by mail is Fri., Oct. 26.” The Recorder reminds voters that Pinal County will have three offi ces open as early vot-ing sites Mon. through Fri.
