The Arizona Conference of Police and Sheriffs represents thousands of sworn law enforcement offi cers who serve and protect our communities every day. We are the largest and fastest growing law enforcement organization in Arizona. Because of our mission and our statewide profi le, our members believe it is important to step up and let our voices be heard on important issues that impact public safety and the law enforcement community. Now is one of those times. The State Senate race between Rep. Barbara McGuire of Kearney

and Joe Ortiz of Casa Grande has caught our attention, and should be of concern to every voter in Legislative District 8. It has recently been reported in The Arizona Capitol Times, that Mr. Ortiz is, unfortunately, an all-too-familiar face to law enforcement in Pinal County. Here are the facts from public record: Since Ortiz became an adult in 1998 he has been arrested fi ve times on charges that include assault, disorderly conduct, criminal damage and criminal speeding. The most recent infraction was in March of this year. In one case, Ortiz was arrested for allegedly

Letters to the Editor

Joe Ortiz wrong choice for LD 8punching his step-father in the face and putting him in the hospital. In that same report, Ortiz’ step brother told police that he too had been beaten and hospitalized in the past, and that Ortiz has a violent temper. At a recent campaign forum in Florence, Mr. Ortiz was dismissive of his past interactions with police and said he has been open about his history with voters. We have seen little evidence in the media or in Mr. Ortiz’ campaign materials of this openness. Further, where Mr. Ortiz hopes voters see youthful indiscretions, we

in law enforcement see a pattern of misbehavior and immaturity that could be predictive of future problems. From the public record, Joe Ortiz displays a disturbing knack for fi nding trouble and strong evidence of poor judgment and a hair-trigger temper. Temperament and maturity are important qualities for a legislator. We expect our lawmakers to meet face-to-face with constituents, not all of whom will agree with their positions. These representatives are also ambassadors for our communities to the rest of the state and country.

It’s charitable to say that Mr. Ortiz would be a poor choice for this role. That is exactly why AZCOPS proudly endorses Rep. Barbara McGuire in her race against Mr. Ortiz for the open District 8

State Senate seat. As law enforcement offi cers, we back candidates who value and respect public safety. We back Barbara McGuire because she has our back./s/Ed Neidkowski President, AZCOPS

I have received robo-calls from the Babeu campaign attacking Jim Walsh, our Pinal County Attorney. Not only are these calls possibly a violation of campaign laws but the very nature of the unfounded accusations and lies shows the gutter level of politics Babeu practices. It’s no wonder he had to leave Massachusetts when his brand of politics got so onerous he had to come to our state where nobody knows him. County Attorney Walsh has done an excellent job for Pinal County, is well respected throughout the state and has the breath of experience required to run what is the largest law fi rm in Pinal County. His offi ce has prosecuted more cases even as the actual crime rate is going down. He has done this by working closely with the sheriff’s department to ensure investigations are run correctly and by running an

effi cient operation. His staff now includes former county attorneys that use to run other county attorney offi ces in the state because they respect Mr. Walsh and want to work with him. The County Attorney’s offi ce is a multifaceted operation advocating for victim rights, making sure “deadbeat” parents support their children, dealing with fraud to help protect small business interest and more. The County Attorney’s offi ce is a complex public service and one that deserves experienced leadership and not someone who throws rocks and hasn’t managed anything more complex then his checkbook. Jim Walsh deserves our vote for Pinal County Attorney. Let’s not repeat the mistakes of Maricopa County./s/David CowardGold Canyon, AZ

I have never written a letter to the editor before, but the time has come. I am writing in support of Orlenda Roberts for County School Superintendent. This race shouldn’t be be-tween Republicans, Tea Party, Independents or Democrats. It should be about what is best for kids and Orlenda Roberts is BEST FOR KIDS! I have listened to Jill Broussard spout what she is going to do if she is elected and I have read what she professes she will do, but NEVER have I heard her say HOW she is going to do all this. There has been no sub-stance in any of her proposals that I have heard or seen. She says we need a high

school for those who don’t want to go to college. Well, Pinal County HAS one. It is called CAVIT. I guess she has never heard of it. They offer nine different programs that do not lead to a four year degree. They have everything from aesthetics to veterinary asst. Our area high schools offer other vocational subjects such as woodworking, agriculture, culinary arts, child care, auto mechanics and hospitality which may or may not lead to going further in school so the training is already in place!! Much of the funding for these programs comes from grants too which Ms. Broussard has said she would do away with

because she doesn’t believe in soft money. I would challenge her to find “solid” money to pay for these programs. She keeps saying she believes if a person is going to become a member of a local school board, s/he should live in the community. Well, Ms. Brous-sard, they HAVE to live in the community at the present time unless something has changed that ruling. She has said she would go to the local school boards and help them balance their budgets. She cannot do that as county school superintendent. That is NOT part of her job. She has said she would do away with the Professional

Development Division of the county school office because it is based on soft money and then in the same breath says she would provide more teach-er training. Of course she has never said where she is going to get the money to do all this training if she does away with the positions that presently perform these trainings. She says she believes every school should have a reading specialist. I agree with this but that again is not up to the county school superintendent. It is up to the local districts. She cannot dictate to them. I GUARANTEE you that the specific schools under Mrs. Roberts do have reading

specialists to work with the students who need it. There are even para professionals to assist with this problem area in the schools Mrs. Roberts oversees. Mrs. Roberts has brought in over $10 million in grants in the time she has been county school superintendent. This is money that has come from the federal government and is going to go to some county somewhere and why not Pinal? So far as I can determine, Ms. Broussard has no experience in overseeing budgets or writing grants. That scares me when I look to see what all the grant money that has come into Pinal County has done to improve

education possibilities for the children of our county. I have spent the past 65 years of my life involved in education in one aspect or another—whether it was as a student, teacher or working at a district/county level so I think I can recognize talent, honesty and what is best for our kids so far as education is concerned. I recognize all those things in Orlenda F. Roberts. Please get out and vote for the best on November 6, 2012. VOTE FOR ORLENDA F. ROBERTS FOR COUNTY SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENT./S/Lolly Davies, Retired Edu-catorCasa Grande, AZ

By Chase Kamp Copper Area News There was plenty of heated debate and some occasional fireworks at the final candidate forum sponsored by Copper Area News Publishers held on Oct. 11, 2012. Candidates for County Attorney, District 1 Supervisor and LD-8 state House and Senate

participated in the forum. The contentious race for County Attorney reached a boiling point with incumbent Democrat James Walsh fervently defending his record against steep allegations by challenging Republican Lando Voyles. Voyles continued his assertion that Walsh’s office has been soft on violent crime. “We have cases right now where officers are getting shot at, which are getting probation,” Voyles said. Walsh contended the opposite, saying felony prosecutions in the County are up 41 percent in the last five years. “FBI statistics show violent crime is down in the County by 30 percent.” Voyles also touted his claim that 61 percent of mandatory prison cases have been plead down to probation by Walsh’s office, one that Walsh virulently opposes. “It’s flat wrong,” Walsh said. “We are not letting violent criminals out in the street.” Voyles campaign is being run in tandem with Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu’s re-election campaign, sharing expenses and appearing together on road signs labeled as the “Law and Order Team.” Walsh argued this kind of political allegiance is dangerous, pointing to

the relationship between Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas and County Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Thomas was disbarred earlier this year by a state legal ethics panel for filing unfounded malicious charges against Arpaio’s political opponents, among other violations. There must be a degree of independence between the two offices, Walsh said. “There is an inherent tension between prosecution and law enforcement, and it’s critical,” he said. “It’s checks and balances.” “I have no political motivations,” Voyles said in response. At the conclusion of the County Attorney portion of the forum, Walsh asked if he would be allowed a closing argument, but the format did not allow time for final statements. Walsh was still compelled to address Voyles accusations of lax prosecution. “You have no basis of accusing the lawyers of my office of unethical behavior,” Walsh said. “This is a lack of policy,” Voyles responded before the segment was concluded. The candidates for District 1 Supervisor also had their share of heated language. Incumbent Pete Rios lashed out at Republican challenger

Gem Cox for accusing Rios of doubling the County Supervisors’ retirement fund, saying the Board is not legally capable of making such a move. Independent candidate Alicia Bristow said the biggest problem at the Board is lack of communication. She argued there was not suffi cient notice about a special session of the Board earlier this month that changed the number of Oracle Fire Board members from three to fi ve. A primary topic discussed by the LD-8 House candidates was education. Current state

Representative Frank Pratt said the legislature had to make painful cuts to education during the fi nancial crisis. “We’re in a position now where we restored $120 million to education that was cut previously in this current budget,” he said. Republican TJ Shope touted his experience as a member of the Coolidge school board and said he would support Pratt’s bill to allow Central Arizona College to give four-year degrees. “These are the types of programs that will be needed for future employment in this district,” Shope said. Democrat Emily

Verdugo attacked the Republican-led legislature for cutting to the maintenance of effort, the state statutory minimum of funding, for education. “They have been cutting education to the limit that is legally stated by the Constitution and have not found a way to make up this revenue,” she argued. Democrat Ernest Bustamante pointed to his record of voting for all-day Kindergarten in 2004 when he was in the legislature. “I will work diligently with all parties on a bipartisan basis to ensure that we fulfi ll the education statute,” Bustamante said.

By Richard Bravo The Ray High Bearcats football team traveled to Hayden last Friday to take on the Lobos in the annual rivalry game and it was a dominating performance by the Bearcats as they route the Lobos 56-0. The game had playoff implications for the Bearcats. With the win, the Bearcats put themselves into the hunt for the last playoff spot; unfortunately, the impressive win over the Lobos was not enough for the Bearcats to advance to the post season. The Bearcats finished the season on a high note with their win over the Lobos racking up 456 total yards on offense and their defense holding the Lobos to a little over a hundred yards for the game. The Bearcats started the game receiving the opening kickoff from their own 15-yard line. Quarterback Destry Yocum scored the game’s first touchdown capping an 85 yard drive

Bearcats dominate Lobos with a 20 yard keeper to give the Bearcats a 6-0 lead with 8:42 left in the first quarter. On the ensuing kickoff, the Bearcats forced one of the four Lobo turnovers grabbing the Lobo fumble on the Bearcat 37 yard line. The Bearcats capitalized on the turnover scoring their second touchdown of the quarter on a 21 yard run by running back Jacob Wernett, giving the Bearcats a 12-0 lead with 6:00 still left in the quarter. The Lobos were unable to move the ball against a tough Bearcat defense and they were forced to punt on their second possession of the game. With a personal foul penalty called on the Lobos during the punt, the Bearcats took over on the Lobo 31 yard line. The Bearcats wasted no time to add another score. Quarterback Yocum hit wide receiver Dominic Bravo on the first play for a 31-yard touchdown pass. Yocum added the two point conversion giving the Bearcats a 20-0 lead at the end of one quarter of play. The second quarter of

play for the Bearcats was just as impressive as the first, holding the Lobos scoreless. The Lobos began the quarter punting the ball away to the Bearcats. The Bearcats drove the ball into Lobo territory again, but failed to score when the Lobo defender came up with an interception in the end zone for the touchback. The Bearcats got the ball back on a punt as the Lobos failed to move the ball. With the ball on the Lobo 44 yard line the Bearcats took three plays to get to the Lobo one-yard line. On the fourth play of the drive quarterback Yocum ran it in for another Bearcat score. The two-point conversion by Yocum was good, giving the Bearcats a 28-0 lead with 3:48 left in the first half. After the ensuing kickoff, the Lobos got the ball on their own 35-yard line. Trying to get something going on their first play, the Lobos went to the air, but the pass was picked off by linebacker Wernett who ran the interception back 38 yards for a Bearcat touchdown. The two-point

in annual rivalry gameconversion failed giving the Bearcats a commanding 34-0 lead heading into the locker room. With the Lobos down by 34 points at the start of the third quarter, they took the second half kickoff from their own 21-yard line. The Lobos continued their struggles on offense and were unable to move the ball. They went three and out and were forced to punt. The Bearcats started from their own 48-yard line getting on the board once again on a four-play drive capped by a 20-yard touchdown run by Wernett. The two-point conversion pass from Yocum to Bravo gave the Bearcats a 42-0 advantage. With the 42-point rule now in affect the clock continued to run. The Lobos were now fighting a tough Bearcat defense and a dwindling clock. With time, winding down late in the quarter the Lobos started their drive for some much-needed points at their own 35-yard line. The Lobos just found no openings in the Bearcat defense going only thirteen yards in five plays. The Lobos needed every down; they tried their luck on a fourth down conversion, but failed to move the chains turning the ball over to the Bearcats. Working with a short field the Bearcat offense struck quickly when running back Wernett took the hand off

on the second play of the drive and outran the Lobo defense 45 yards for his second rushing touchdown of the night. The two-point conversion pass from Yocum to Bravo was good extending the lead to 50-0 at the end of three quarters of play. The final quarter was a quick one due to the running clock. The Bearcats never let up as the defense got its second score of the game on a fumble return of 50 yards by defensive end Jacob Pace to give the Bearcats a 56-0 lead halfway through the fourth. Trying to avoid the shutout, the Lobos moved the ball into Bearcat territory hoping for a score. With the ball on the Bearcat 40 yard line, the Lobos chance of scoring came to a screeching halt when the Lobo pass was picked off by linebacker Julio Noriega to secure the 56-0 shutout victory for the Bearcats. The Bearcats played their best game of the season both defensively and offensively. Wernett led all rushers with 129 yards on 11 carries and two touchdowns, Yocum had 32 yards on four carries and two touchdowns. On the receiving end, Bravo led with six catches for 92 yards and a touchdown. Defensively the Bearcats were led by Noriega who had 6 tackles 1 assist and 1

interception, Wernett had 5 tackles and 1 assist and 1 interception ran back for a touchdown, Yocum with 5 tackles and 1 assist, Pace with 4 tackles and 1 fumble recovery for a touchdown, Ryan Bickley and Robert Medina with 4 tackles each, and Bravo, Joe Rudy Lorona, and Rexx Sosa with 3 tackles each. I would like to thank the Bearcat football team and coaches for another exciting year of Bearcat football. I would also like to thank all the parents and fans for all the support you have given this season!

Georgie Digs ...By Georgie [email protected] Many thanks are due to Roy Sosa for what he did to bring about a wonderful reunion of the Hayden High School classes of 1947-1957, although there were also others among the many who attended that informal event that took place at the Hayden Golf Course on Saturday, October 6, 2012. Ruby Jean Giorsetti,

who with her sons, Jeff and William, run their 100 year-old Giorsetti Superior Grocery in Winkelman, went to the reunion with me, and what fun it was to be with her who had been my school friend and neighbor on Hayden’s Smelter Side “way back when”. Myron Webster, who we called “Spike”, brought his photo album of snapshots that had been taken during

our High School days in Hayden, and photographer Richard Encinas took group pictures of those who had been in different classes. It was great to see and visit with those who I had known, and what wonderful memories that reunion brought up! On Facebook there is the group “Growing up in Hayden/Winkelman.” It is an open group that means anyone can see the group, who’s in it, and what members post and there were 824 members when I last checked. By Chase KampCopper Area News For 25 years, the Pinal County Town Hall has been a major gathering of County stakeholders with the purpose of tackling the region’s issues. Held on Oct. 10 and 11 in Gold Canyon, this year’s Town Hall brought dozens of government officials, local business delegates and private sector representatives under one tent to access the County’s business future. The Pinal County Town Hall is an assembly of delegates that identifies critical issues facing Pinal County and creates a forum for education and exploration of a single topic each year. The larger theme of this year’s town hall was “Workforce Next Gen: Cultivating Success in Pinal County,” with discussion in the specific areas of hiring veterans, looking at future employers coming to the County and examining the substance of the County’s workforce. Sandy Smith with Pinal Partnership has attended every Town Hall since the beginning.“I believe they are relevant,” she said, “getting folks together from across the county and talking about a relevant issue.” “One of the reasons we decided on this subject this year was because we did economic development the year before and wanted to follow-up about the workforce,” she added. Finding out the needs of future employers in the County will be critical. Casa Grande Mayor Bob Jackson was on-hand to discuss the employment needs of Phoenix Mart, the international. Discussion also involved the continued expansion of the Gateway Airport in nearby Mesa. “How do we get a qualified workforce and what do we know is

Representatives from CAG, CAC and DES discuss workforce connections

here?” Smith said. “When somebody wants to invest in PC and bring those jobs to us, how to do we get that information out?” Promoting resources for job placement, especially for veterans, was another major topic. The discussion about available

programs brought together officials from the Arizona Department of Economic Security, Central Arizona College, Central Arizona Governments and the Gila County Re-Employments and Pre-Layoff Assistance Program. The Department of

Economic Security, for example, has programs for disabled veterans and other hopeful workers that pair them with employers seeking positions that demand their skills.

“There’s a lot of good things happening that not a lot of people know about,” Smith said. The Town Hall functions as a gathering place for a diverse array of

community leaders, government officials, business-owners and County stakeholders, said Central Arizona Governments executive

assistance Andrea Robles. “Town Hall draws upon the diversity of our delegates to promote public discussion and consideration of issues, builds consensus, and supports implementation of strategies developed during the course of this forum.” Previous themes for the County Town Hall have addressed education, rural healthcare, sustainable growth and economic issues. An annual report, which

includes recommendation and suggestions, is prepared after each Town Hall and distributed to delegates and partners. “The Town Hall does not possess official power or authority,” Robles said, “but rather encourages delegates to begin a grassroots effort to implement strategies developed during the two-day forum.” To review this and previous year’s reports, and to find more information about the event, visit PinalCounty TownHall.com.

A Dinner Benefit to raise money for the John Slater Music Scholarship Fund, will be held Nov. 2, 2012 at 6:00 p.m. at Mi Amigos Mexican Grill in Mesa. The John Slater Music Scholarship Fund will benefit a graduate of Ray High who has participated in and demonstrated a commitment to the Ray

High music program. Slater, a 1979 graduate of Ray High School, and son of Jean and the late Bert Slater, died June 2, while piloting his plane in Mexico on a humanitarian mission with the non-profit LIGA (Flying Doctors of Mercy). “Because the Ray High School music program was an important part

of his life, his family established this fund to honor him, his love of music and his contribution to the Ray High School band program,” said Carla Slater, John’s sister and a graduate of Ray High. Slater grew up in Kearny and began playing the saxophone in the fifth grade. He continued his love of music all through

high school with the Ray High concert, marching and jazz bands as well as the Ray Rock Ensemble. “John really loved his music,” said Mark Munoz, former director of the Ray High music program. “The one quality that I loved about John was his enthusiasm for the music program and everything he did. He always had a smile on his face.” In 1979, he received the John Phillip Sousa Award from Director Munoz, which is an honor given to seniors for outstanding music performance throughout high school. Other honors included being chosen to perform in the Arizona All State Band and the Central Region Music Festival. Tickets are $25 and include a Mexican buffet with all additional proceeds to go towards the scholarship fund. Donations to the scholarship fund can also be made to The John

Slater Music Scholarship Fund, c/o Bank of the West, 374 Alden Rd., Kearny, AZ 85137 “For those interested in attending, please RSVP

The band consists of Brian, Connie, daughters Rachel and Jessie, and son, Ryan. The Burnett’s are based out of Flagstaff and the musically talented family is known as an “Arizona

a member clicks on that group’s “Files”, a very interesting entry is my brother’s “Memories of Hayden, Arizona by Bill Kishbaugh - 1936/1950”, and the many comments made proved the interest of those who had lived in the areas mentioned. Since the first edition in 1999, the memoirs were revised for Bill by Shauna Griffith Kuykendall who has contributed many interesting stories and pictures. In reference to the Hayden/Winkelman group, Richard N. “Nick” Avenetti had stated in his Letter to the Editor of the Copper Basin News “We will welcome you with open arms. After all, we are all family and we share the common bond of growing up in a community where things weren’t always

perfect, but always fondly remembered.” Two more open groups are “Ray, Sonora, and Kearny Memories” with 2177 members, and “What’s going on in Kearny” with 194 members. There also is the “Dudleyville/Aravaipa” group with 127 members, but it is a closed group which means that anyone can see the group and whose’ in it, but only members see posts. People can request to be added, and members can easily add people to the groups. The many interesting pictures that have been posted in these groups and the comments made by group members are history lessons that should be shared. I agree with the following Marcus Garvey quote: “A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.”
