Vital Components of your paperWhat should an introduction do?!

    •  Provide background on a subject or concept and any relevant information !

    •  Gain the reader’s attention and guide them toward a purpose!

    •  Acquaint readers with main ideas of a text!

    •  Introduce the scope of your argument/analysis (thesis) !

A thesis statement makes a concise claim about the main claim that can be supported through well articulated reasons. !

Informing/telling/describing/conveying is not the same as persuasion.!

A topic sentence is the first sentence of a paragraph and establishes what the paragraph will cover.!

    Working Definitions

    •  Often, it is best if you can provide a working definition of your key term. If you are critiquing thoughts surrounding a particular idea, you are going to want to define how other use the idea, versus how you are going to claim it to be and use it in the rest of your paper.!

Lines of Argumentation•  Thesis: While many geoscientists advocate the use of geoengineering to mitigate the

effects of climate change and global warming, the impracticality of geoengineering will undermine such measures. Political barriers, the overestimation of the effectives of geoengineering, and the motives of geoengineering advocates will prevent geoengineering from being successfully realized.!

    •  TS1: Geoengineering is a theory that cannot be implemented in the real world because of current international law and intergovernmental political discourse.!

    •  TS2: Geoengineering will require the consent of every country around the world and have to make provisions with the United Nations in order to bypass the ban on weather modification. A unanimous approval among countries worldwide will more likely not occur as not every country will agree with geoengineering policies.!

    •  TS3: Geoengineering has been overhyped and its effectiveness exaggerated by some researchers in order to promote its programs.!

    •  TS4: Geoengineering is not a suitable solution because its measures are being undermined by big industries, such as oil and gas, which stand to gain most from this form of climate change mitigation.!

Lines of Argumentation•  Thesis: Even though some claim that due to Facebook’s social nature it cannot be

used to sell utilitarian products or spread information to new customers for a company, Facebook can be used by any marketer in any field to create positive word of mouth advertisement, get reliable consumer feedback, and gain information for marketing purposes.!

    •  TS1: Individuals against the use of Facebook as a medium for marketing argue that its social nature hinders its users from fully analyzing advertisements for utilitarian goods as well as claiming that company pages do not attract new customers.!

    •  TS2: On the other hand, Facebook has the ability to strengthen the connection between a company and its customers through reliable communication that can lead to what is called positive word of mouth advertising.!

    •  TS3: In addition, the connections created between companies and customers through Facebook do not only create word of mouth advertising, they also give valuable customer feedback for products and advertisements.!

    •  TS4: Lastly, Facebook can be used to take marketing surveys to see how consumers respond to potential advertisement and product ideas.!

Conclusions•  Conclusions are just as important as introductions. The

conclusion closes the essay and tries to close the issue. The aim is to convince the reader that your essay has covered all the most important arguments about the issue and that your main premise is the best position on the issue. You should not present any new arguments in your conclusion. !

    •  Conclusions provide a general warning of the consequences of not following the premise that you put forward and/or a general statement of how the community will benefit from following that premise.!

Incorporate your answers to the questions from Friday’s class.

Thesis and Thesis 2.0•  Even though some claim that due to Facebook’s social nature

it cannot be used to sell utilitarian products or spread information to new customers for a company, Facebook can be used by any marketer in any field to create positive word of mouth advertisement, get reliable consumer feedback, and gain information for marketing purposes. !

    •  The arguments that Facebook cannot be used for all products or companies and that a mainly heavy buyer fan base makes the feedback worthless are both illogical. Facebook can be used by any marketer to create positive word of mouth advertisement, get reliable consumer feedback, and gain information for marketing purposes. !

    Transitions

    •  All of your argumentative points have a connection, i.e. your purpose. However, it is more rhetorically convincing if you can explain/articulate how all of these points your are making work together, (or, better yet, build upon one another) towards your purpose. !

    •  Explain how your separate argumentative points are working together as you transition from one paragraph to another.!

Topic Sentence 3: In addition, the connections created between companies and customers through Facebook do not only create word of mouth advertising, -> they also give valuable customer feedback for products and advertisements.!
