A 100 Mile House Bantam girls hockey team nearly made it a comeback story.

The local team, spon-sored by The Royal Canadian Legion #261-100 Mile House, was one of three host-ing the Attitude on Ice 2014 tournament, and they met the Mackenzie Mischiefs in the finals at the South Cariboo Rec. Centre on March 9.

Down 3-0 in the final frame, Karlie Easton and Sydni Poggenpohl scored goals with 7:13 and 2:21 remaining, respectively. Both goals were assisted by Kailey Lund.

Coach Scott Cross says the Bantams need-ed “just one more goal” in the great final.

He adds both coaches, including Scott Easton, were quite proud.

“We were really happy with the girls’ performance on the weekend. It was a great team effort.

We had players that

were pretty quiet all year step up and play excellent. And our goal-ie [Rachel Cross] was great all weekend.”

Atom, Bantam and Midget teams from Williams Lake, Langley, Prince George, Kamloops, Tri-Cities and Chilliwack were also in town for the tournament, which started March 8.

Sprott Shaw students

learn about mobility

Ken Alexander Free Press

The Health Care Assistant (HCA) program is rolling along at the Sprott Shaw College satellite campus in 100 Mile House.

Recently, the students made their way around town in wheelchairs – rotating roles as care assis-tant and client.

Instructor Sheryl Walters says the role-playing is an important part of the course because it gives the students a good idea about mobility limitations.

It not only allows them to know what it’s like to be a client and have to deal with these limitations, she says, but it also teaches them what they need to be aware of as care assistants and how to handle any problems that arise.

It’s not only learning about their clients’ mobility issues, she adds, but also understanding the prob-lems their clients have gaining access to buildings where they need services on a regular basis.

Walters notes they prefer to go around the down-town core during this wheelchair session because it allows the members of the public to see the issues of mobility limitations for their elderly or disabled clients.

Sprott Shaw College’s Health Care Assistant students practised skills and awareness on snowy sidewalks around 100 Mile House. Dezarae Walters, front left, was pushed along by Katlin Smith, while Melissa Walker, front right, was propelled by Nicki Dayman on March 7.

Karen Mellor put on a pair of modified sun glasses meant to obstruct a person’s vision and tried to hit a target with a bean bag during the 100 Mile House & District chapter of the White Cane Club’s annual open house at the 100 Mile House Community Hall on March 1. The exercise was meant to show the challenges with different types of vision impairment.

Figure skater Jordyn Karl from 100 Mile House won a gold ribbon taking part in the 2014 Okanagan Region Championships in Penticton, recently.

Spectators at the South Cariboo Rec. Centre were treated to a solo performance by Alyssa Lindberg during a year end exhibition by skaters from the 100 Mile & District Figure Skating Club on March 1. Lindberg is a new coach with the club’s CanSkate program.

Eight year olds Jorja Findlay and Riley Cameron had fun dressing up for a funky photo at the recent Horse Lake Elementary School’s Family Fun Night.

Many Christians celebrated Shrove Tuesday, also known as “Pancake Day,” on March 4. Locally, Bill Marshall, left, Brian Blake, middle, and Jim Williscroft helped prepare pancakes and sausages at St. Timothy’s Anglican Church in 100 Mile House. The feast is cel-ebrated as one final indulgence before fast-ing and other religious obligations associated with Lent begin.

Presented jointly by the Agri-Culture Enterprise Centre; Central Interior Regional Arts Council; Cariboo Family Enrichment Centre; South Cariboo Chamber of Commerce & Board Voice !March 29, 2014 10am-4pm !Valley Room at the Lodge in 100 Mile House (behind the Red Coach Inn) !Lunch Provided

The workshop on non-profit governance and policy will be of interest to board members and senior staff of non-profit organizations. It focuses on the basic elements of governance—the roles and responsibilities of board members and staff—and the value of policy making as an important element of governance. The workshop will focus on questions many board members ask:

• You’ve got to have a board, but what’s it supposed to do?

• You’ve got to have bylaws but who reads them?

• Do we really need policies? • Why do Board meetings take so

much time? A healthy non-profit organization has good answers to these and other questions about governance, but for many people such questions are a big turn-off. This workshop will help you find out; (a) why questions like this aren’t the least bit boring, (b) why you aren’t alone in not having good answers to them, (c) how your governance function can be improved.

Facilitator is Graham Kelsey; Dr. Kelsey is Professor Emeritus of Educational Studies at the University of British Columbia; has served on boards nationally, provincially and locally; in 2012 he was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in recognition of his outstanding community service. Skaters have ‘blast’ at 2014 year-end exhibitionGaven CritesFree Press

Local figure skaters performed different jumps, spins and turns for family and fans at the South Cariboo Rec. Centre recently.

The 100 Mile & District Figure Skating Club’s 2014 year-end exhibition featured a variety of rou-tines from beginners in the CanSkate program, and more advanced girls from the STARSkate program.

Club president Nanci Lundquist says the event was a bonding experience for team members, and a way to show off what they learned this year.

“There were quite a few people watching, which was really good. A lot of families came out.

“It was a really good experience. The kids had a blast, which is all that really matters.”

The show saw team manoeuvres, a team relay, a pre-CanSkate exhibition, and performances by Courtney Dolinski, Mikayla Julseth, Alyssa Lindberg, Emma Giroday, Megan Glen, Kathrin Ricketts, Jordyn Karl and Keely Pacheco.

Six figure skaters from 100 Mile House were in Penticton on Feb. 14-16 to compete in the 2014 Okanagan Region Championships, where Karl won a gold medal, and Julseth and Pacheco won silvers.

Next up is a spring camp running between March 24 and April 17 at the South Cariboo Rec. Centre.

We have a lot of girls coming from Williams Lake, Lundquist explains.

“We’re kind of integrating the two clubs.... It’s a really good experience having a completely differ-ent set of kids out there.”

Public meeting on

100 Mile RCMP responded to 73 com-plaints and calls for service during the past week.

Pedestrian struckThe 100 Mile House

RCMP is asking for the public’s assistance regarding a pedestrian being struck by a car on Feb. 25.

A youth was cross-ing between the tunnel at Highway 97 and the Cariboo Mall when he was struck at slow speed by a silver vehicle. The male driver got out of the vehicle, but did not speak to the youth and then left the scene.

The youth received bruising to his leg and was not injured. Anyone who may have witnessed this incident is asked to call the 100 Mile House RCMP Detachment at 250-395-2456.

Purse recoveredOn March 15, a lady’s

purse was stolen from outside the Greyhound bus depot in 100 Mile House when she had gone inside the terminal.

Her purse was recov-ered later in the by staff at the Red Coach Inn. All of her identifica-tion was recovered but the cash was stolen. If you have any informa-tion on this or any other crimes in the 100 Mile House area, call 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). You can also contact www.bccrimestoppers.com.

Your identity will

remain unknown. Should your informa-tion lead to the arrest of the responsible party Crime Stoppers will pay cash for the TIP.

Petty theftOn March 10, 100

Mile RCMP were called about a male conceal-ing a jug of washer fluid under his coat and walk-ing out of the 7-Eleven in 100 Mile House.

A name and a vehicle

description were provid-ed to police. Investigators located the vehicle south of 100 Mile House and pulled it over.

The driver happened to be operating a vehicle, which did not have any insurance. He was issued a ticket for driving with-out insurance and his vehicle was towed.

The washer fluid was located and returned to the store and no charges were laid.

Poetry contest underwayBy Kimberly VanderHorst

The South Cariboo Writers’ Guild is sponsoring a poetry con-test in honour of next month’s international poetry month, and we are welcoming residents of the South Cariboo to enter.

With a theme of “springtime” as inspiration, the guild hopes to see entries from a wide range of ages and experience levels.

Formed as a non-profit group with the goal of supporting local literacy and creativity in our community, this is the first of many events we plan to host.

We have discussed workshops for local writers, including chil-dren and teens, and many other events.

Entry is free of charge, and prizes have generously been donated by the guild’s council members.

The winning poem will be

published in the 100 Mile House Free Press, but there is also a gift certificate to NutHatch books, free editing services, free speech-arts instructional sessions, and a performing slot at the 2014 Winter Arts and Crafts Fair (hosted annually by the 100 Mile and District Arts Society) on offer.

Guild judges will also select runners-up to be published on their website.

The contest closes April 18th.

Entries should be 20 lines or less, with family friendly content.

Poems can be submitted online through the website at www.southcariboowriters.com, by e-mail to [email protected], or by mail to P.O. Box 2034, 100 Mile House, B.C., V0K 2E0.

Please include your first and last names and contact informa-tion with your entry.

Kimberly VanderHorst is a member of The South Cariboo Writers’ Guild.
