VETERANS DAY

The History of Veterans Day

November 11, or what has come to be known as Veterans Day, was originally set as a U.S. legal holiday to honor Armistice Day - the end of World War I, which officiallytookplaceonNovember11,1918.Inlegislationthatwaspassedin 1938, November 11 was “dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be hereafter celebrated and known as ‘Armistice Day,’ a new legal holiday honoring World War I veterans.

In 1954, after having been through both World War II and the Korean War, the 83rd U.S. Congress, at the urging of the veterans service organizations, amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word “Armistice” and inserting the word “Veterans.” With the approval of this legislation on June 1, 1954, November 11 became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.

VETERANS DAY

VETERANS DAY -Cheryl Dyson

On Veterans Day we honor all, Who answered to a service call.Soldiers young, and soldiers old, Fought for freedom brave and bold.

Some have lived, while others died, And all of them deserve our pride. We’re proud of all the soldiers who,Kept thinking of red, white and blue.

They fought for us and all our rights,They fought through many days and nights. And though we may not know each name,We thank ALL veterans just the same.

HONOR OUR MILITARY -Joanna Fuchs

Let’s honor our military,The men and women who serve,Whose dedication to our countryDoes not falter, halt or swerve.

Let’s respect them for their courage; They’re ready to do what’s right To keep America safe, So we can sleep better at night.

Let’s support and defend our soldiers,Whose hardships are brutal and cruel,Whose discipline we can’t imagine,Who follow each order and rule.

Here’s to those who choose to be warriorsAnd their helpers good and true; They’refightingforAmericanvalues; They’refightingformeandyou.
