8 FACTS ABOUT REFORMED HEALTH INSURANCE
1. GROWING HEALTH CARE SPENDING
The total U.S. health care spending is expected to increase to $4.8 trillion in 2021, which is almost double the cost in 2010.
Health care will account for nearly 20 percent (1/5) of the U.S. economy.
2. AGE MAKES A DIFFERENCE
Due to reformed health insurance plans, older people will generally pay less for their plans and younger people will pay more for their plans than in previous years.
However, older people may still pay up to 300 percent more for health insurance than a younger person.
3. RELYING ON POPULATION HEALTH
Now that everyone is required to be offered the same premium prices regardless of health, everyone pays the “average” of health costs for a population to cover those who are sick who are paying the same amount.
Everyone pays the same amount no matter how much of their coverage they use.
4. GETTING HEALTH INSURANCE
The Affordable Care Act (ACA) requires large employers to provide health coverage for their employees or pay a fine.
If your employer does not offer insurance, you can purchase standardized policies on the health insurance exchange.
5. PRICING FACTORS
Health insurance policies are now based on:
1. age
2. number of people covered by the policy (people in the family)
3. rating area (the health of the population area, which will change based on where you live)
4. tobacco use (depending on the state)
6. HEALTH CARE SPENDING
In 2012, $2.6 trillion was pent on health care in the U.S.
30.74 percent was spent in hospitals, 20.04 percent on physicians, 10.01 percent on prescription drugs, 5.44 percent on continued care and nursing, and 3.75 percent on private health insurance administration costs. The rest was spent on 10 other categories all under 3 percent each.
7. U.S. COMPARED
Compared to other countries, the U.S. spends 60 percent more on health care costs in hospitals.
Specialists and dentists make almost 250 percent more than in other Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries.
