CLASS AND ELEGANCE FROM URUGUAY We have bought three new wines called Atlántico Sur (pages 5 and 6) from Garzón, an exciting new area of Maldonado in the south east of Uruguay. This cool area with well-drained soils produces wines of class and elegance.

2010: AN EXCEPTIONAL ARGENTINE VINTAGE Don’t miss the lovely 2010 vintage from Argentina which is cool and fine. The new 2010s from Mendel (pages 6 and 7) are delicious. New plantings of cabernet franc are being blended into some of the top wines to contribute complexity. Zaha Altamira Malbec, which has been garnering excellent press reviews, is an excellent example.

NEW FROM CHILE We have a new sauvignon blanc, Viña Litoral (page 6), and a new pinot noir, Ventolera (page 7), both from Leyda and made by the talented Stefano Gandolini. In the cool far north Limarí continues to impress and in addition to the syrah and sauvignon blanc we already buy from Tabalí there is now an attractive new chardonnay (page 4) and a grapy sweet wine made from pink muscat grapes (page 4). Also, from the extreme south in Bío-Bío, is our first late-harvest botrytised riesling (page 4) made by Cono Sur. We have, in addition, selected our first wines from Torres’ Chilean outpost (pages 5 and 7), including an excellent, judiciously priced merlot and a cabernet made from vines more than 100 years old.

This offer is open until 3rd March, 2013 while stocks last.

COVER IMAGEThe design of Catena’s winery, built in 2001 in Agrelo, Mendoza is based upon the stepped pyramids of the ancient Mayan civilization.

CONTENTS:

South America continues to expand its repertoire and is making increasingly refined wines of outstanding quality. Society buyer Toby Morrhall is at the forefront of all that is good coming out of Chile, Argentina and now, once again, Uruguay – a fact recognised

at the International Wine Challenge last year when The Society’s Chilean range was again voted the country’s best, for the sixth time in the last seven years.

Los Gansos is named after the geese, nature’s own insecticides, that roam Cono Sur’s vineyards feasting on the bugs making spraying unnecessary

Los Gansos Cabernet Sauvignon, 2011 Lovely blackcurrant-scented cabernet from a mature vineyard at Chimbarongo, a cool spot in the Rapel Valley, showing unusual class and refi nement for its price. 13% ref AM-CE6581 £6.50 bottle £78 dozen

The Society’s Chilean Cabernet Sauvignon, Maipo Valley This is exceptional. Made from excellent raw materials and now with some bottle age, which has developed the aromas and rounded out the palate. Winemakers Ignacio Recabarren and Marcelo Papa choose quality wines which I taste with them, and they make an initial blend which then goes into barrel for about eight months. A year later we re-taste the blend and make any fi nal touches as necessary. 14% ref AM-CE2601 £6.50 bottle £78 dozen

The Society’s Chilean Merlot, Rapel Valley We are delighted to have worked with Concha y Toro’s renowned winemakers Marcelo Papa and Ignacio Recabarren to produce this superior merlot. All the wine was aged for about eight months in small barrels. The result is a wine that is ripe and round with the plummy richness characteristic of this variety. 14% ref AM-CE1511 £6.50 bottle £78 dozen

South America, and especially Chile, produces world-beating wines in this price category and in a widening range of grape varieties and styles. As the UK government increases duty faster than infl ation, we reckon you get the biggest bang for your buck at about £6.50, where the cost of the duty (which is levied per bottle and not by price) is proportionally less signifi cant than on

the cheaper wines. This we have called the ‘South American Sweet Spot’ and we offer two mixed cases at these prices packed with delicious wines. It is no surprise these cases include our own-label wines which were all jointly blended by the winemaker and The Wine Society buyer Toby Morrhall to provide what we consider to be the best wines of their type at this price.

Pay a little over the price of entry-level wines and get even better value for money.

Koyle Reserva Carmenère, 2010 From a superb new estate at Los Lingues, Alto Colchagua, this intense and spicy carmenère is one of the most interesting and distinctive examples. LITTLE STARS: WINES BETWEEN £7 AND £10 This is one of the most improved areas of quality for South America. These wines are made from lower-yielding vineyards in regions where the matching of climate to variety, and now increasingly soil, offer distinctive character and outstanding quality. Some of the most exciting we are offering in a mixed case called Little Stars to show them off. It includes two new finds, Torres Santa Digna Merlot 2011, a lovely plummy merlot, lightly oaked, and an intensely

flavoured sauvignon blanc called Viña Litoral from Leyda. Otherwise the Limarí valley continues to impress, able to grow a wide range of varieties in its varying climates and soil types. Maycas’ pinots are even better in their second vintage. Tabalí’s sauvignon blanc is exceptionally crisp and invigorating and its syrah combines a northern Rhône tar-like aroma with a warm and ripe

southern Rhône palate. Corte Marcelo’s chardonnay is tense and fine. We welcome back Uruguay in the form of two unusual wines made from interesting grape varieties which are well worth trying. It’s not just about tannat!

WINES MORE THAN £10 A BOTTLE South America is developing greater complexity in its top wines, sometimes by a move to subtle blends rather than single-varietal wines, and often forsaking out-and-out power in favour of wines which show more fi nesse, and which in turn are more enjoyable and drinkable.

Zaha Altamira Malbec is a great example of this. From the fi ne 2010 vintage and the cool Altamira region at over 1000m altitude, where malbecs develop a pretty fl oral character, and where the limestone and silty soils give a gentle silky texture. Co-fermentation with some cabernet franc and petit verdot adds a further nuance of complexity. This is a wine of intensity of fl avour, not power, which is delicious now

yet will develop even further complexity from cellaring.

Brioso is Susana Balbo’s outstandingly beautiful blend given a little bottle age and now really starting to open up and blossom. Valdivieso’s Eclat is a lovely Rhône-style red made with very old carignan blended with syrah and mourvèdre. Gran Bodegon is a complex merlot blend from Uruguay.

New this year is Torres Manso de Velasquez made from a vineyard planted in about 1902. This wine has that remarkable old-vine texture which is characterised by a caressing feel from sweet tannins and velvety fruit.

REDSUndurraga TH Alto Maipo Cabernet Sauvignon, 2010 Lovely cedary cabernet from cool vineyards high up in the Upper Maipo, aged in barrels for 14 months, 50% of which were new. Now to 2018. 14% The 2011 follows. ref AM-CE6501 £11.25 bottle £135 dozen
