Promotion for Lt Col J Lamb MC FUSILIERS

The Colonel of the Regiment and all Fusiliers congratulate Lieutenant Colonel J Lamb MC who has been provisionally selected for promotion to the substantive rank of Colonel in 2020. He has been selected to be the Assistant Head, Defence Strategy and Priorities from December 2019.

FUSILIERS come top of career courses Congratulations to 2Lt Dan Elliot FUSILIERS who was named Top Student on the Platoon Commanders Battle Course 1901. The award is the iconic PCBC binoculars which were presented to 2Lt Elliot on 30 July at the end-of-course dinner by the Army Sergeant Major. It's a tough course to pass, let alone come top. Well done Dan !

Congratulations also to Major Andy Wellum-Kent FUSILIERS who has been awarded the Top Student on the Intermediate Command and Staff Course. It's known as a mentally challenging course, so again, being top is no mean achievement. Well done Andy !

A Fusilier family continues their service At the recent Passing Out Parade at the Infantry Training Centre Catterick, the Regiment welcomed Fusiliers Jack Jones and Brandon Nagel. It was a particularly poignant occasion as Fus Jones is the son of the late Sergeant Jones FUSILIERS who was killed in Iraq whilst serving the Country and the Regiment.

Welcome to the Regimental family.

The Fusilier Aid Society Lottery

The Regiment is really pleased to launch our very own Fusilier Aid Society Lottery. It is live from 1 September and you can now start playing. The details of our Lottery and how to play are below.

We have teamed with Sterling Lotteries who will run it on our behalf to generate income for FAS – and give the Fusilier family the chance to win something !

Sterling have provided lottery and raffle services for over 30 years. They have over 250 clients, many recognisable charities, including the RAF Association and the Royal Marines Benevolent Fund. They are monitored by the Gambling Commission and the Lotteries Council. The Regiment has selected Sterling’s low-risk Unity Lottery to generate income for the Fusilier Aid Society (FAS). FAS holds a relevant gambling licence.

The FAS Unity Lottery

Unity works as an ‘umbrella’ lottery, i.e. all players’ tickets, regardless of their chosen charity, go into a single weekly draw. We have no overheads to pay and Sterling manages all administration.

The features of the FAS Unity Lottery are:

• Each ticket costs £1 a week.

• 50p from every £1 ticket returns to FAS as profit. (The other 50p covers administration costs and the weekly prize fund).

• There is a weekly top prize of £25,000, with a range of smaller prizes.

• All players in the lottery have a 1 in 63 chance of winning a prize

• Should a Fusilier win the £25,000, Sterling will also donate £2,500 to FAS.

Anyone can play our FAS lottery:

• serving Fusiliers and veterans, their family and friends

• our affiliated CFAVs, their family and friends

• anyone who wants to have a fun way of donating to our Regimental charity

• and anyone who wants a chance to win a prize.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

When does the weekly draw take place ?

The Unity Lottery draw takes place every Friday, and each ticket gives players the chance of winning one of four fantastic prizes. Each entry costs just £1.

Where does the money go, exactly?

For every £1 played, at least 50p goes straight to FAS. The other 50p is split between the prize pot and administration costs.

How can FAS offer £25,000 as a top prize?

When a player wins a prize, this is covered by the Unity prize pot. This means that charities using Unity for their fundraising lotteries can offer a £25,000 jackpot and smaller prizes to their players.

What are the odds of winning a prize?

The odds of winning any prize in Unity is 1 in 63. Everyone in Unity has an equal chance of winning, no matter which charity they support or how many players that charity has.

What can I win?

The Unity lottery prize structure is based on a 6 digit number match, in the correct sequence, as follows:

• 3 digit match = 5 entries into the next draw

• 4 digit match = £25

• 5 digit match = £1,000

• 6 digit match = £25,000

Is the lottery legal?

Yes, it operates in compliance with all Gambling Commission (the UK regulatory body concerned with lotteries) requirements and the lottery is administered by a certified External Lottery Manager. For further information please see the rules page on www.unitylottery.co.uk.

How do I buy FAS lottery tickets?

You can buy lottery tickets through this FAS Unity page here:

https://www.unitylottery.co.uk/causes/fusiliers-aid-society/

Set up a Direct Debit subscription, which is the easiest way to ensure you’re entered into the draw each week, or by cheque/credit card.

Alternatively, you can telephone Unity on 0370 050 9240 and request an entry form for the FAS lottery.

Can I choose my lottery numbers?

These are chosen randomly and will be your numbers for the duration of your membership of our lottery. When you enter the lottery, you will be sent your unique numbers.

7

Can I have more than one entry?

Yes. Each £1 entry buys you one chance of winning in the FAS lottery. In accordance with our commitment to responsible gambling, we offer a maximum of 20 entries each month per person. Example entries are shown here:

£1 a week £2 a week £3 a week

1 chance to win 2 chances to win 3 chances to win

50p goes straight to FAS each week

£1 goes straight to FAS each week

£1.50 goes straight to FAS each week

How old do I have to be to enter?

You must be aged 16 or over to enter the lottery, so only older Cadets can play and we strongly advise they first discuss playing the Lottery with their parent or guardian. But their parents can certainly play.

I’ve signed up to join the FAS Lottery. What happens now?

Within 10 days of registration you will receive a confirmation letter which contains details of your unique lottery number(s). You will be entered into the draw when you have monies available and you will continue to be entered into the draw as long as you have monies available against your lottery number.

Why is there a delay between registration and entry into the draw?

Following registration it is necessary to complete a number of administrative processes which include verifying your payment details with your bank, claiming the funds from your bank account and the funds being received.

8

Why is the price £4.34 per month when paying Direct Debit on a monthly basis?

The monthly cost breakdown of £4.34 for playing the lottery is based on paying £1 per week over a 52 week year. Direct debits for this amount are collected once monthly. Sometimes there will be five weeks in a month and the additional £0.34p is to build up credit to cover the fifth week on the five-week months.

Can I check the winning numbers?

Yes - the winning numbers will be available on the Unity website. www.unitylottery.co.uk/results

How do I claim my prize?

Once the draw has taken place the winning number is published on the Unity website. If you are a winner, we will send your winning cheque straight to you at your address – there’s no need for you to claim.

I don't want any publicity

Only the winning numbers are published on the Unity website - no names or locations are given out. When you sign up to play, you have the option to request "No Publicity"

How long can I play for?

You can play our lottery for as long as you wish. Following successful payment you will continue to be entered into the draw as long as you have monies available against your lottery number.

How can I stop playing the lottery?

If you pay a fixed sum by credit or debit card or cheque, once those funds are used, no more will be taken unless you renew. If you pay by direct debit, you

can simply stop it either through your bank or by contacting Unity direct (see below)

Can I change the amount I pay?

If you call the Unity Helpline (see below), you can add or remove lottery ticket numbers which will increase or decrease the amount you pay.

I only want to play once – can I do that?

You can buy 1 ticket for entry into 4 weekly draws. This is the minimum entry, but allows you to play just once.

There are many forces and other lotteries out there – why should I enter this one?

Playing the FAS Lottery means all proceeds go to our own Regimental charity, nowhere else. You are welcome to play other lotteries, but FAS will not receive any income from those.

Could I just give a donation to FAS – I don’t like gambling?

Yes of course – FAS welcomes any donations, large or small. Just contact RHQ.

Who do I contact if I have any further questions?

For specific questions about the lottery or your lottery membership, your first point of call is the Unity Lottery Helpline 0370 050 9240 (Mon – Fri 9am – 5pm). They can answer all your questions about the process, how to play and payment etc. details. You can alternatively fill in this contact form www.unitylottery.co.uk/contact

5 FUSILIERS support to Ex PRAIRIE STORM

As a Reserve Armoured Infantry (AI) Battalion, CO FUSILIERS was keen for our soldiers to support their Regular 1 FUSILIERS counterparts in Canada on Ex PRAIRIE STORM at BATUS. It would give our Fusiliers the chance to develop and enhance their Fire team, Section and Platoon shooting capability to a level that has not been reached previously. It would also improve the 1 FUSILIERS / 5 FUSILIERS pairing relationship by working alongside their Regular

counterparts and developing their competence in Combined Arms operations.

To get ready to deploy to BATUS involved many moving parts as 5 FUSILIERS’ Company locations are spread from Northumberland to London. The Battalion’s Training Team came up with a 7 month plan. This used multiple range locations across the country, and divided the training weekends between North and South so that travel time was kept as short as possible for the Company locations. The training consisted of some 40 individual ranges and was demanding at all levels, enabling the Reservists to integrate well and to achieve the same readiness as their 1 FUSILIERS counterparts. It took an individual from basic marksmanship through to advanced life firing drills on shoots they had never experienced before in their Reserve careers. And some individuals qualified to carry out live grenade throwing.

The Commanding Officer was able to send 90 personnel to reinforce 1 FUSILIERS BG for the exercise. The vast majority were from Rifle and Support companies who operated out of the back of the 1 FUSILIERS WARRIOR AFVs, but there were also a number of critical support function people. This helped free up 1 FUSILIERS personnel to conduct Adventure Training or to take leave where possible. The 5 FUSILIERS

deployment set a new record for the largest deployment of Reservists in the 47 year history of BATUS.

On arrival in BATUS, the Reservists conducted G&Z range work before deploying onto the prairie. They also received the BATUS safety briefs that all soldiers must attend. Once out on the ground, they integrated within Z and X Coys with the officers working mainly out of BG HQ. The Fusiliers on the ground conducted Combined Arms Life Firing at all levels, including the clearance of complex terrain. The Reservists’ performance matched that of the Regulars, proving the worth of the Reserve forces within the British Army. And all ranks of 1 FUSILIERS made the Reservists feel fully part of the team, proving that the bonds of the Fusilier Family are still as strong now as they ever have been. A true testimony to the strength of our fine Regiment.

Commander BATUS observed a number of attacks and commented on the high standards achieved by the joint 1 and 5 FUSILIERS Battle Group despite the limited chance to train together before arriving on the prairie. The 1 FUSILIERS Command Team expressed their gratitude for the scale of support and standard of training achieved by 5 FUSILIERS and their willingness, like the Regular troops, to knuckle down and get the job done.

Commemorating Op BANNER – “The Troubles” On 10th August the Regiment held an Op BANNER memorial service at the FUSILIERS memorial in the grounds of the National Memorial Arboretum

in Staffordshire. Many veterans attended the service which was conducted by the Reverend Keith Punshon, the Regimental Honorary Chaplain.

The Fusiliers deployed to Northern Ireland on Op BANNER 35 times and 27 Fusiliers and Fusilier family members lost their lives.

Op HERRICK 10 Memorial Service The strength of the Fusilier Family was evident once more as serving officers and soldiers joined families, friends and Association members at the National Memorial Arboretum on Saturday 17 August 2019. They were there to remember those in 2

FUSILIERS who lost their lives as a result of an explosion in Sangin, Afghanistan, 10 years ago and those who died earlier during that tour, namely:

• "Pat" Suesue,

• Joseph Etchells,

• Simon Valentine,

• James Fullarton,

• Simon Annis,

• Louis Carter,

• Shaun Bush.

Including Lieutenant Colonel Chris Head, CO 1 FUSILIERS, more that 130 gathered to honour these “Magnificent Seven" and the families are particularly grateful to those members of the Regiment who took the time to support them on this fine and sunny anniversary day.

The service was led by Rev Andrew Rawding who flew from Northern Ireland to lead us in prayer and readings. His address was powerful and relevant , the more so because of his service in 2 FUSILIERS in A Company and of his time in Afghanistan as Naval Chaplain to 40 Commando RM.

We were fortunate in that BBC Coventry and Warwickshire carried the event at 8.30 a.m. that morning, not only with a news mention but also with live interviews with Samantha Fullarton, Fusilier James Fullarton's twin sister and Rev Andrew Rawding.

After the Service, many families moved on to The George and Dragon in nearby Alrewas for refreshments.

Jason King, the “racing Fusilier” raced for the first time in August since his accident. He won the wheelie competition and was asked many questions from the public about the Fusiliers. He is now looking forward to the Guinness World Record attempt later in August and hopes to generate some good publicity for the Regiment.

Did you know?

Thomas Hughes made sure he was first on the list to join the newly formed 19th Middlesex Rifle Volunteer Corps in 1859. As time went by the 19th evolved into C Company, 5 FUSILIERS at Balham.

Little known today but Thomas Hughes was the author of “Tom Browns School Days”, a reflection of his own time spent at Rugby School (incidentally, now with a FUSILIERS affiliated CCF)

After his service, he moved to the United States in the 1880s. In 1911 his daughter Lilian who was on her way to visit him, sadly died on the Titanic.
