Current sessions include:Remembrance, WW2 (comparing the fighting Fusilier with the Home Guard), WW1, The Victorian Soldier, Toys and Games, Literacy support (which can be adapted for all year groups), Life in the Trenches and Outreach.
Why do we remember?KS1 (can be adapted for all age groups)Availability: Workshops available throughout the year (mainly delivered in October and November)Duration: 1 & ½ hoursChildren look at different memorials in the museum, focusing on death plaques given to the families of the fallen after the First World War. We can also include a visit to Bury Parish Church.
Toys and Games - How are our toys different from those of the past?KS1Availability: This session is available throughout the yearDuration: 1 & ½ hours This workshop is designed to develop children’s knowledge of the different toys and games of the past. Children will be encouraged to think about how today’s toys differ from those their parents and grandparents played with, and about the materials toys are made from. We tell the story of the Tin Soldier, and the children can dress up as toy soldiers.

With the resources available to
the Fusilier Museum, Education
Officers are able to supply in-depth
information about the World Wars
and British history including the
evolution of toys and games, and
the Victorian Era.
Offering hands-on workshops and activities, we
encourage enhanced learning for Key Stages
One and Two. A variety of subjects can also be
delivered for secondary school groups.
The Museum offers learning visits for all ages,
with facilitated, guided and self-guided tours, and
support with your planning. Education Officers
are also able to suggest pre and post-session
work for your class if needed.

collection and the use of original sources and
objects makes visits both interesting and fun!
World War 2KS2Availability: This session is available throughout the yearDuration: 1 & ½ hours, split into two parts
Part One: The Fighting Fusilier• Where were the Fusiliers during the Second World War?• What were they doing?• Who was Fusilier Jefferson, the Lancashire Fusiliers’ VC winner.Children are then involved in an object handling session looking at uniform andequipment, where they decide which items are from Second World War and why.
Part Two: The Home Front• Discovering how the war affected Bury and the surrounding area.The children listen to the experiences of museum volunteers who grew up in Buryin the war and then find out more about the local Home Guard.
The Victorian SoldierKS2Availability: This session is available throughout the yearDuration: 1 & ½ hoursChildren build an understanding of the Crimean War, learning about key people andhow they helped contribute to change in Britain during the Victorian Era.
Focusing on developments in journalism and photography, as well as technology andthe development of army equipment children will be tasked with becoming detectivejournalists discovering how the Crimean War helped influence society in Britain.
Literacy SupportKS2Literacy strands supported: Speaking, listening and responding, group discussion andinteraction, creating and shaping texts.Availability: This session is available throughout the yearDuration: 1 & ½ hoursThis session is based on heroes – those in the museum, and the children’s own. Thechildren will hear about different heroes in the museum and then create their own herocharacter based on objects in the collection.
The session will be most suited to children in years three and four, but could also support narrative work in year 5. Perfect for Year 3 - UNIT 3: Adventure and mystery and Year 4UNIT 2: Stories set in imaginary worlds.
Life is the TrenchesKS3 and aboveAvailability: This session is available throughout the yearDuration: 1 & ½ hours Students have the opportunity to look at the uniform and equipment used during the First World War and discover what life was like as a Fusilier serving in the trenches.
OutreachEducation Officers are also able to visit schools to deliver outreach session to pupils.Please contact museum staff for more details.

Health and Safety:The Fusilier Museum has a modern fire alarm system and all fire exits are clearly marked. We would ask that visiting school groups respect other visitors by not running and shouting in the galleries. We would also ask that school groups do not touch any exhibits unless invited to do so. You will be sent hazard identification information. The Fusilier Museum recommends that teachers and group leaders carry out and use their own risk assessments.
