    The Holy Spirit

We trust in the one triune God, the Holy One of Israel, whom alone we worship and serve;Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. Amen.Brief statement of Faith, lines 5-6, 80

This triune God is the creator of the universe the savior of the world who has been revealed as the perfect model of humanity Jesus Christ and is the ongoing presence and power of God in the world.

    Biblical references

On Pentecost, the seventh Sunday after Easter, Christians commemorate the coming of the Holy Spirit to Jesus early followerBut the Bible contains several earlier references to the Spirit as wellfor example, in the accounts of Marys conception: she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit (Matthew 1:18) and The Holy Spirit will come upon you (Luke 1:3the accounts of Jesus baptism: he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him (Matthew 3:16) anof Jesus sending his disciples out for the first time: do not worry about how you are to speak or what you are to say fo ris not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you (Matthew 10:19-20).

Through the Holy Spirit, God empowers us to grow in faith, make more mature decisions and live more faithful lives. The Spi

gives us the will, as Jesus said, to be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect (Matthew 5:48). The Holy Spiritgives believers the authority to accurately interpret the Bible, just as the Spirit enabled the original writers of Scripture to telltruthfully about God, Jesus and everything else we need to know. The Spirit also gives authority to the church to act in Godsname for the good of humanity. The Spirit gives every person a sense of calling to a special function in the world, in keepinwith Gods providence and Jesus summons to follow him. Among the fruits of the spirit identified by the apostle Paul are

love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (Galatians 5:22).

    PDA - Still Serving

Now, more than five years after Hurricane Katrina, there are still over 47,000 blighted homes in New Orleans, a city of only344,000 residents. As many of the other faith-based rebuilding initiatives have moved on to other disasters, Project Homecoming is more determined than ever to find new and creative solutions to better serve the people of New Orleans. In addition to

rebuilding more than 130 homes over the past four years, Project Homecoming has now partnered with the City of New Orleato build 13 new, energy-efficient, hurricane-resistant, and affordable homes I two adjacent neighborhoods over the next twoyears. Project Homecoming has also begun a Summer Youth Program, in which High School and Middle School youth are invited to serve during the month of July.

Project Homecoming works hard to ensure an excellent volunteer experience. Their skilled construction staffs, including worsite managers on every house, ensure volunteers are effectively used so that high quality, energy efficient homes are built in atimely fashion.

The olive Tree Volunteer Village is built to comfortably house up to 90 volunteers per week. The $25 per volunteer per day, volunteer fee includes nightly accommodations at this air conditioned dormitory-style housing facility, three meals per day, anevening program.

A Pastoral Note from Jacquelyn Pinkowski

    From the Interim Pastor

Can it really be September? Where did the summer go? It seems that I ask those same questions every year at this time.

As I reflect on the summer it has been very busy. The end of June and early July was Music Day Camp. What a great experie40 children had. Maury did an outstanding job. He assembled a great staff and he had developed a wonderful program. If yomissed the concert at the end of Music Day Camp, you really missed a wonderful evening.

Then at the beginning of August VBS was held. Once again, our staff went above and beyond in the work they do. Leslie haabout 30 children and again she did a magnificent job with the development of the program. Leslie developed the entire progwhich meant that we didnt have to pay for curriculum. The kids had a great time and learned a lot.

So, now is the time for new beginnings, new programs and new opportunities. One of the most important events this season wbe held on September 24th. The Rev. Dr. Tim Jones will be leading us in an all day retreat. The retreat is open to the congregLeaders are particularly encouraged to attend. Tim will be leading us in Appreciative Inquiry. This will begin the process we use for developing a Mission Study which is the next step in getting ready to elect a Pastor Nominating Committee.

Session members, Deacons, Committee chairs, everyone who has an interest in the future of the church, please call the office us know that you intend to attend. Thats Saturday, September 24th, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. Location will be announced once whave an idea of how many will be attending.

    Blessings,

    Jackie

AnnouncementsDamien Center of Troy to Participate in an-

    nual AIDS Walk

Once again the Damien Center of Troy, housed at TAUM, is

inviting friends and supporters to participate in raising pledges

through the annual AIDS Walk. There are two differences in

the walk this year. First, the walk will be held Saturday Sep-

tember 24th, instead of on a Sunday as has happened many

years. Second, the way money is raised is for Damien Center

will be different. All the pledges designated for Troy Damien

Center will go directly to the center. This generally sounds like

a good thing, but in the past, through the excellent grant writing

skills of Donna Elia, the center has been able to receive half of

the pledges directly, and more than half through the grants!

The Damien Center counts on the AIDS Walk for about $9000

of its annual budget. So its clear that this year we need to step

up our own pledges, and perhaps ask others to pledge as well.

There is a wrinkle for First United supporters as well. We will

not be able to participate directly, since September 24th is also

the date of our church retreat. So I am asking everyone from

First United who walked in the past and everyone who pledged

in the past to pledge for Donna Elia or Janice Wiezorek (the

Damien Center director). Additionally, if you know of anyone

outside of FUPC who might be interested in walking or pledg-

ing, please ask them to do so and to designate their donations

    for the Troy Damien Center.

The Damien Center of Troy is a mission of Troy Area UnitedMinistries. Damien Center serves those living with HIV and

AIDS and their families. Among other services, the Damien

Center serves lunch and dinner twice a week, provides social

and recreational opportunities and coordinates outreach and

    support.

    Presbyterian Disaster Assistance Current Needs

    Horn of Africa Drought

Severe drought is affecting the Horn of Africa. Tens of thousands have left their homes in Somalia to seek food, water, and bprovisions. PDA has sent an initial contribution from your One Great Hour of Sharing funds to assist newly displaced peopleMogadishu, drought-affected people in the Gedo region, refugees in the Dadaab camp in Kenya, and host communities in bothKenya and Somalia.

The need in the region is enormous, with relief from the drought conditions not expected until the rains come in December orJanuary.

    Situation ReportLiberia February 2011

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) is responding to the displacement and refugee crisis in Liberia in cooperation with oumission partner, Concerned Christian Community (CCC).

Since the beginning of December 2010, political turmoil has caused between 25,000 and 50,000 Cote dIvoire refugees, as weas 25,000 Liberians living in Cote dIvoire, to enter Liberia. The number of refugees is creating pressures for Liberian auth oriand for host communities. Many villages are hosting as many refugees as residents. In some villages, refugees even outnumberesidents. An example is the border village of Loguato, where 5,307 refugees are living with just 1,743 locals.

Spring Storms in the US & Hurricane Disaster Relief

PDA One Great Hour of Sharing funds are helping CCC in providing:

Immediate food and non-food item emergency relief assistance to 2,000-3,000 vulnerable families:

    trauma counseling and HIV/AIDS awareness services to more than 500 women and girls;

emergency mobile medical services to the refugees; andlimited water and sanitation assistance through the construction of hand pumps and emergency latrines.

    How you can help

You can stand in the GAP for disaster survivors and help the church in this response.

GIVE. The generous sharing of your financial blessings through the One Great Hour of Sharing offering and special designatgiving provides the resources needed to assist with immediate emergency needs, clean up provisions, long-term and unmetneeds, and spiritual/emotional counseling.

Make checks payable to FUPC and mark which disaster you want your gift to go to.
