WINE COUNTRY NEWS | WINE COUNTRY THIS MONTH

Santa Ynez Valley may be a mere two-and-a-half hours from Los Angeles, but it feels likean entirely different world. The 120-mileexcursion north on Highway 101 takes you farfrom the tinsel and traffic of Los Angeles to thepastoral hills and quaint towns of Los Olivos,Buellton, Los Alamos, Ballard, Solvang andSanta Ynez.

The allure of Santa Ynez is evident the

moment you step foot on the well-drainingterroir. Beyond the casual lifestyle and sensuallandscapes, there is a plethora of shops, hotelsand restaurants. The list of distractions forlocals and tourists include hiking, fishing, biking, horseback riding, museums, golfing, theater, gliding, and, of course, wine tasting.

For the wine aficionado, Santa Ynez Valleyhas the greatest concentration of wineries inSanta Barbara County. Prior to Prohibition, thevalley had roughly 5,000 acres under vine. Ittook until 1969 before commercial viticulturereturned to the region. Santa Ynez Valley was

granted AVA (American Viticultural Area)status in 1983 and of its 42,000 total acres,7,500 are currently planted to vinifera grapes.

The appellation’s climate ranges from coolin the western reaches near the Pacific Oceanto moderate in the east where the higherground and coastal hills offer protection fromthe marine elements. Depending on the loca-tion and microclimate, the AVA is capable of successfully growing everything fromChardonnay and Pinot Noir to Syrah, Merlotand Cabernet Sauvignon.

One of most popular and historic wineriesin the area is Firestone Vineyard. It is conve-niently located a few miles east of 101 at 5000Zaca Station Road in Los Olivos. Founded in1972, Firestone was the first major estatewinery established in the Santa Ynez Valley. The site possesses a mild, cusp climate andextremely long growing season thanks to theinfluence of the cold Pacific Ocean some 30

miles to the west. The winery has 400 acres of vineyards planted to Bordeaux, Rhone andBurgundian varieties.

Firestone was purchased in 2007 by BillFoley, who provided additional resources anda new commitment to produce exceptionalwine from the iconic property. He hired wine-maker Paul Warson who revamped the wine-making protocols and helped develop vine-yard techniques that would fit the estate’sclimate and soils.

Recently Paul’s hard work has begun togenerate high scores and great reviews in

Wine Spectator, Wine Enthusiast and Restau-rant Wine. Paul has also created some newproprietary red blends that will be released in2011 and 2012. Based primarily on Bordeauxvarieties, these wines are the most excitingbottlings in the winery’s history. They not onlyshow the range and quality of the winery, butalso demonstrate the potential of Santa Ynezto become one of California’s marquee winegrowing regions.

Firestone’s tasting room, one of the mostpopular vinous landmarks in all of Santa

Barbara County, is open daily from 10 a.m

5 p.m. The recently remodeled visitors’ ce

features an expansive island bar and l

picture windows that overlook the estate v

yards. There are displays of archive ph

family from turn-of-the-century tire inn

tors to wine industry pioneers. The tas

room staff is friendly and knowledgeable

the selection of wines changes regularly wan emphasis on current releases and spe

There are daily tours that explore

WINE COUNTRY NEWS | WINE COUNTRY THIS MONTH

by Kim Murphy-Rodrigues

Located at the eastern gateway to Paso

Robles Wine Country, amidst a backdrop of

rolling hills and majestic vineyards is Eberle

Winery. Celebrating 33 years of winemaking,

Gary Eberle has created an iconic status for

himself in Paso Robles, known as both the

“Godfather of Paso Robles” as well as the orig-

inal California Rhône wine pioneer. Eberle is

also credited for bringing attention to not

only his winery, but to the entire area of over

200 wineries as a premium winegrowing

region.

It all started close to four decades ago

when Eberle, a fresh graduate and football

standout at Pennsylvania State University,

opted to pursue a graduate degree at

Louisiana State University (LSU). It was therethat a professor introduced Eberle to the

world of wine, which soon led him to Cali-

fornia where he enrolled in the Enology

doctorate program at the prestigious U.C.

Davis School of Viticulture and Enology. His

post-doctorate travels found him in Paso

Robles, where Eberle launched his wine

industry career by co-founding the Estrella

River Winery in the early-’70s.

Within ten years, after achieving early

success with Estrella River Winery, Eberle

found himself at a crossroads and decided to

reshift his focus to pursue his own wine label.

Finding the perfect location Eberle set out to

develop his vineyard with the intent of

crafting smaller lots of premium wines. In the

early-’80s Eberle released his first vintage of

Eberle wine – the 1979 Cabernet Sauvignon,

soon joined by a Chardonnay and a Muscat

Canelli from his estate fruit. Having his own

winery only increased Eberle’s desire topromote and gain recognition for the Paso

Robles region, which he successfully did in

1982 by forming and co-founding the Paso

Robles American Viticultural Area (AVA).

Eberle has been involved in the Paso Robles

Wine County Alliance since its conception

and travels throughout the United States as an

ambassador of both Eberle Winery and the

Paso Robles region.

Travelers on Highway 46 East are familiar

with the redwood landmark that Gary Ebe

Gary Eberle - Rhone PioneerIn the early-’70s U.C. Davis was one of the few

sources for Syrah cuttings in the NewWorld.

Eberle, who had found himself enjoying

Australian“Shiraz”, is credited with intro-

ducing the world of Rhône to California wine-

making. Working with U.C. Davis, Eberle intro-

duced the Syrah clone to California in the mid-

’70s and in 1978 was the first U.S. winemaker

to ever produce a 100% Syrah wine, with theEstrella clone named after Eberle. As Syrah

has gained a following with U.S. Rhone wine

enthusiasts, Eberle has been a mainstay in

California Rhones, with EberleWinery adding

the ever-popularViognier and their Syrah

Rosé to their family of wines.

With a leading role in the family

film, The Christmas Bunny with

Florence Henderson coming out this

November, and the grand opening of

her first freestanding art gallery this

month right off the park in downtown

Paso Robles, actress/writer/art dealer

Madeline Vale has a very busy season

ahead of her. Over the last two decades

Miss Vale has appeared in commer-

independent films all while managing

the career of celebrated Los Angeles

artist Edward Walton Wilcox and working with galleries in New York,

San Francisco, Miami, Palm Beach, Seattle, Los Angeles and Berlin.

With all this experience Madeline Vale has combined her partnershipswith organizations such as LaunchLA (a non-profit organization with

ties to LACMA), several international galleries, and her own instinc-

tual talent for discovering great art to launch an art gallery of the

highest caliber in Paso Robles and the Central Coast. “This was actu-

ally quite unexpected,” says Vale “I moved from Los Angeles to Paso

Robles simply to enjoy the pastoral life in this incredible food and

wine region. I had my chickens and my sheep, views of the vineyards

out my window. But then I was absolutely surprised and enamored by

the incredible sense of community in Paso. I wanted to be a part of

that, to be more involved and after one year of residing here I excit-

edly realized that with my experie

in the art world I had somethin

value to contribute.”

As for the work shown in

gallery Vale states, “I represent b

emerging and established artists

while most of my artists have v

extensive and impressive careers,

only prerequisite when it comes

showing work is that it must be ex

lent and affective…affective in

sense that it stirs the soul and de

into those less traveled regions of

mind. One of the things I’m most excited about with opening

gallery is the opportunity to discover the great talent in this area

hasn’t had a ton of exposure and the more renown artists thatdiscreetly working in the region but don’t show locally.” “I kn

they’re out there,” laughs Vale, “because where else would you wan

live when you can live anywhere?”

With connections in the art world spanning the globe and

decades, her expertise is not limited to the four walls of the gall

Miss Vale also functions as a consultant/broker for corporate art co

In addition to producing wines from estate

grapes, Wild Horse sources grapes from 16

diverse appellations and more than 50 vine-yards. Sourcing from multiple vineyards is a

key philosophy at Wild Horse and results in

complex and harmonious wines.

The tasting room surrounded by estate

vineyards is located in the South of Paso

Robles Wine Country in Templeton. The

charming country tasting room reflects the

“enjoy naturally” attitude. Visitors are asked

to select five wines for tasting from a list of 15

wines. The extremely diverse list includes

several whites, four Pinot Noirs, Zinfandel,

Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Oneof the fun things about a visit to the Wild

Horse tasting room is trying some of the more

unusual varietals like Verdelho, Malvasia

Bianca, Blaufrankisch and Negrette.

Pinot Noir is Wild Horse’s flagship wine

with most of the production being available

only in the tasting room. Clay Brock, director

of winemaking, said his favorite Pinot Noir

quote is from Karen MacNeil – “Working with

Pinot Noir is a lifelong study that is never

completely mastered.” The winemaking teamat Wild Horse appears to be doing a great job

at mastering Pinot Noir with the wines

winning several top awards. The winery offers

a unique experience for visitors with their

Pinot Noir Blending Seminars each Saturday

and Sunday at 11 a.m and 2 p.m for $50 per

person or $35 per club member. During the

seminar, participants will learn about this

how to blend and will then be given four

Pinot Noirs to create their own 375ml bo

Originally from Hayward California,

David Galzignato is a graduate of UC Davis

where he completed two winemaking intern-ships prior to graduating with a Bachelor of

Science in Viticulture and Enology. After

graduation, David worked as a cellar intern

in Italy then returned to the States to work at

Columbia Crest. His resume is impressive,

stints at Charles Krug, Paraduxx/Duckhorn

Vineyards and Lewis Cellars. So why move to

Paso Robles?

“The people are open about winemaking,”

he says. “They are still excited about wine

and the potential of the terroir. In other

regions I have seen people lose that excite-

ment over time, and without that excitement,

it is difficult to make ‘Rock Star’ wines.”

There is a specific style to Jada wines, some-

thing David calls, the ‘Jada Spin.’ “Our wines

are very user friendly,” he states. But friendly

wines are, obviously, created in the ground. “I

try to walk the vineyard every morning,” he

says. “There is no replacement for knowing

your property. I work very close with our

vineyard team to ‘dial in’ specific characters

of our unique terroir.” And from there his

fusion of old world and new world tech-

niques takes the fruit at its best and finesses

it. “I love traditional techniques with a

modern twist,” David states. “My uncle,

Mario Galzignato, has been making family

wine for many years. We have a family vine-

yard in Oviglio (the Piedmont region of Italy)

planted in 1919. He taught me a respect for

the vine, the grape and winery sanitation. I

learned, over the years, to develop a wine-

making eye. I try to combine some of his

philosophy with the science and technology I

learned throughout my winemaking educa-

tion and career.” And that includes visits to

France for specific barrel selection.

consider barrel selection to be one of

biggest strengths. Every two years I trave

France to see the latest version of an age-

tradition and develop a cooper relationswith each cooperage family.”

All of that and the weather contribut

“Paso has a unique climate scenario,” he s

referencing that the Jada vineyard site wh

can have a temperature fluctuation of

degrees between night and day, yet it is o

25 minutes from the coast. That swing he

WINE COUNTRY D IN ING

By Allison Levine

Paso Robles Inn Steakhouse has been a favorite place for locals andvisitors for more than 50 years, but their history dates even furtherback.

Sitting on top of natural sulfur springs, the El Paso de Robles Hotelwas opened in 1891. Built in the Victorian style, the hotel stood as afortress in the small town of Paso Robles and was the destination of theday. But, the golden era of the El Paso de Robles Hotel and Hot Springscame to an end after a major fire in 1940 burned down everythingexcept the Grand Ballroom.

The Paso Robles Inn was reopened in 1942 as a modern bungalow-style hotel with surrounding gardens. While the inn was rich in Pasohistory, it did not maintain its landmark status until the Martin familybought the property in 1999 and restored it to its original beauty, including the original Grand Ballroom. Despite losing one building inthe 2003 earthquake, the property currently offers 30 deluxe spa hotelrooms and six two-bedroom suites, all with mineral spring tubs in therooms.

With an outdoor patio and fire-pit tables overlooking the gardens,Paso Robles Inn Steakhouse, which was remodeled last fall, is a classicsteakhouse with a modern twist. Offering a diverse menu, the restau-rant has access to great resources, including seafood, produce from theSanta Maria Valley and other artisan products. The chefs regularly go to

the farmers’ market to buy ingredients for the recently revised famfriendly menu which offers more options for the budget-conscvisitor. Offering breakfast, lunch and dinner, some of the popular diare the halibut soft tacos, the pulled pork sandwich and the SaMaria-style BBQ. The wine list features an extensive selectioCentral Coast wines. In partnership with Tobin James Winery, tfeature a Westside Zinfandel which is served directly from stainless stanks into a decanter.

Check out Prime Rib Wednesday where you can get a 10-oz prrib with potato of choice and mixed green salad for $19.95 or a prrib sandwich and potato for $12.95. And, if you stop at the Paso RoSteakhouse after a day of wine tasting in the area, you will reccomplimentary corkage on your first bottle of any San Luis ObiCounty wine.

Chanterelle Pizza Paired

with Talley Vineyards2009 Estate Pinot NoirPizza and Pinot are always a favorite in my house. In fact, we like

it so much that my freezer is always loaded with pizza dough just

waiting to be rolled and baked. It has also led me to taste many

different Pinot Noirs which makes this pairing at the top of my list!

Pizza is always fun to make and this recipe is simple, flavorful and

turns ordinary ingredients into an amazing meal.

This recipe comes from Brian Talley, owner of Talley Vineyards who

just recently installed a pizza oven in his home. When his staff

suggested that he come up with a pizza and Pinot pairing for his

guests and family, he immediately knew which recipe to share. Even

if chanterelles aren’t in season, any favorite mushroom variety can be

used so this dish can be made anytime. The Talley Vineyards 2009

Estate Pinot Noir is a perfect match for this chanterelle pizza as the

earthy tones in the wild mushrooms complement the deep black fruit

flavors of the wine. Since this recipe doesn’t use the traditional mari-

nara sauce, the flavors are clean and simple. This Pinot Noir has a rich

bouquet layered with earthy, black cherry, fig and mushroom aromas

with subtle hints of lavender. Sip this medium-bodied Pinot Noir, and

you will taste the concentrated fruit flavors balanced by the freshacidic characteristics of the Arroyo Grande Valley.

The Talley Vineyards Tasting Room is open daily from 10:30 a.m.

to 4:30 p.m. and has spectacular views of the Rincon Vineyard. They

also offer three picnic areas surrounded by lush landscaping. By

advance reservations, Harvest Tours are a special tour of the vineyard

and winery. Each tour will be unique and it’s a great way to experi-

ence the exciting Harvest season. The Estate Harvest Tour is a 90-

minute in depth tour followed by barrel tasting and a private reserve

and library tasting paired with artisan cheeses. The cost is $35 per

person. They also offer a half-hour Harvest Tour for $10 per person

which provides a fun informative overview of the harvest season

following the grapes from vine to barrel.Talley Vineyards also offers a Pinot Noir Experience on three

different Saturdays starting September 10th, 17th, and October 8th.

On each date, they will feature one of their three Pinot Noir vineyards.

Guests will be able to visit and tour the vineyard, winery, barrel taste,

and finish with a vertical flight of Pinot Noirs from that vineyard in

their private Rincon Room. It’s a great way to learn more about vine-

yard practices, winemaking and the harvest season. The cost is $50

per person or $40 for wine club members. Advance reservations are

required and can be made by calling Andy at (805) 489-0446 x25 or

email at [email protected].

PASO RO BLES | WINE COUNTRY THIS MONTH

Though J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines has

been in operation since the mid-1970s, this

year marks the 10-year anniversary of the

J. Lohr Paso Robles Wine Center, which

opened its doors to visitors in the fall of 2001.

On Airport Road, off Highway 46, the J. Lohr

Paso Robles Wine Center sits, surrounded bythe estate vineyards of its home ranch.

Though the family-owned-and-operated

producer makes around one million cases of

wine a year, its Paso Robles Wine Center

retains a warm, friendly feel. Both welcoming

and comfortable, the facility features an

attractive tasting room with a large, wrap-

around veranda overlooking J. Lohr’s Seven

Oaks vineyards, which stretch, dotted with

oaks, beyond the distant hills.

On October 9th, J. Lohr will celebrate the

10-year anniversary of its Paso facility with acomplimentary event open to the public. The

event, called Honoring a Legacy, will feature

winery tours, special tastings and a silent

auction benefitting the Donna Van Noy Breast

Cancer Fund, a local Paso charity that

emerged from Enhancement Inc., an organi-

zation that seeks to improve the quality of life

for breast cancer patients on the Central

Coast.

As many know, October is National Breast

Cancer Awareness month. It will also mark

the kickoff of J. Lohr’s annual Touching Lives

campaign, which will for the third consecu-

tive year raise money for the National Breast

Cancer Foundation through the sales of

  J. Lohr Carol’s Vineyard wines. The 10th

anniversary celebration will simultaneouslycelebrate the history of the J. Lohr Paso

Robles Wine Center and draw attention once

again to J. Lohr’s ongoing mission to support

the causes of breast cancer awareness and

early detection. Though J. Lohr has had a

longtime partnership with NBCF, whose

services reach those across the country, their

anniversary celebration seeks to bring aware-

ness at a local level.

“When we opened our J. Lohr Paso Robles

Wine Center ten years ago, we were thrilled

to join a thriving community in Paso Robles.During this time we have had the honor of

building many impactful relationships with

winegrowers and vintners, customers and

wine club members,” says Cynthia Lohr,

daughter of founder Jerry Lohr and his late-

wife Carol, who passed away from complica-

tions from breast cancer in 2008. “Like our

family, many of these folks have been

impacted by cancer. While we will continue

our mission at the national level throughout

the year, at this event we want to honor a

assist those in our Paso community wh

lives have been touched by this devastat

illness.”

During Honoring a Legacy, the J. L

tastings of J. Lohr Carol’s Vineyard CaberSauvignon and Sauvignon Blanc, acclaim

single-vineyard wines from J. Lohr’s N

Valley vineyard, along with wines from

Riding high on the phenomenal success of last year’s

first-ever Sunset SAVOR the Central Coast, event orga-

nizers Sunset magazine and the San Luis Obispo CountyVisitors and Conference Bureau have expanded opportu-

nities for visitors to experience the quintessential Cali-

fornia lifestyle at this destination food and wine event

taking place September 29 through October 2.

“Not only is the Central Coast on the front edge of the

farm-to-table movement, but it’s also a stunningly beau-

tiful region to explore,” said Katie Tamony, editor-in-chief

of Sunset. “We wanted to match unique cultural and

adventure experiences to the food and drink that are

getting the region so much attention.”

Among such experiences are new “Adventure Tours”that bring visitors up-close and personal with San Luis Obispo

County’s natural and historic attractions, punctuated by a gourmet

lunch to enhance the beauty of the surroundings. All Adventure Tours

will take place Friday, September 30, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and cost

$50 per person. Examples include:

A tour and lunch at the Happy Acres Family Farm with Sunset

Food Editor, Margo True. This small, artisan dairy in the rolling hills

of Templeton nurtures over 200 goats and uses their all-natural,

hormone-free milk to produce a line of high-end cheeses, ice creams,

lotions and soap. This will be a hands-on tour with opportunities to

milk the goats and make cheeses. After the tour, enjoy the breath-

taking countryside while savoring a beautifully prepared luncheon

along with select wines from Wild Horse Winery.

A kayak and paddleboard tour of the Morro Bay National

Estuary with Sunset Publisher, Peter Medwid. The protected

wetlands of the Morro Bay Estuary host one of the most remarkably

rich wildlife habitats in California as a fish nursery, an important

stopover on the Pacific Flyway for numerous bird species, and a

marine protected area. Experienced guides will set a relaxing pace to

glide along quiet waters and enjoy the great outdoors, followed by a

sumptuous oyster luncheon overlooking the bay at Miss LoLa’s South-

side Grill.

A gourmet lunch and coastline walk in Montaña de Oro StatePark with Central Coast Outdoors Guide, John Flaherty. Montaña

de Oro is among California’s greatest natural treasures, with over

8,000 acres of rugged cliffs, secluded sandy beaches, coastal plains,

streams, canyons and hills. This tour will explore an area long beloved

of naturalists for its solitude and raw beauty, and will culminate in a

gourmet lunch paired with fine local wine at Spooner’s Cove.

A hike, tour and lunch at the Point San Luis Lighthouse with

Sunset Associate Garden Editor, Julie Chai. To visit the fully-restored

Point San Luis Light Station is to walk back in time to the 1890s when

this beacon was the main protection for ships at sea from meeting with

rugged cliffs. A four mile hike from Avila Beach alo

a private stretch of shoreline, the Point San Luis Lig

house will provide knowledgeable docents to guvisitors through the property, after which wine, fr

local cuisine, and an unparalleled view of the Pac

Ocean will await in the old Horn House.

In addition, the 2011 Sunset Western W

Awards Gala will take place during the SAVOR fes

ities on Friday evening, September 30 from 6 to

p.m., under a grand tent on the historic Pismo Be

Pier. Focusing solely on wines produced in the W

Sunset Western Wine Awards are recognized as

highest honor for Western winemakers. Attendees

join Sunset Wine Editor, Sara Schneider and SunEditor-In-Chief, Katie Tamony, as well as a professional panel of jud

including wine writers, sommeliers, and winemakers as t

announce the winners throughout the evening. For $85 per pers

guests will partake in a locally-sourced gourmet dinner, sip the no

SANTA BARBARA COUNTY – SANTA MARIA | WINE COUNTRY THIS MONTH

by Carolyn Turner

“My favorite part about being a winemaker

is that ultimately you can share the wine with

others,” said Gary Burk, winemaker at CostaDe Oro Winery. “I love the satisfaction that

comes from connecting with people and

sharing that enjoyment.”

Although he came from a farming family, it

wasn’t until Gary’s father, Ron Burk, planted

grape vines with his business partner Bob

Espinola in Santa Maria in 1989, that Gary

was first introduced to the wine industry. At

the time he was living in Los Angeles and

developing his career in music. In 1993,

during a visit home, Gary had the good

fortune to dine with Jim Clendenen, owner of

Au Bon Climat. Jim offered him a job working

harvest, which Gary accepted. Over the next

several years, Gary worked with Jim at Au

Bon Climat and Bon Lindquist at Qupé,

learning how to make wine on the job. He

made his first two barrels of Costa De Oro

Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in 1994.

“I love making Pinot Noir because it’s a

challenge,” said Gary. “It’s a challenge to grow

and make into wine. But when you get it

right, it’s a transcending grape: complex,

layered, elegant.”

In 2002 Gary decided to focus all of his

efforts on being the winemaker for Costa De

Oro, making Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot

Gris and Cabernet Sauvignon. He has

received critical acclaim for his wines,

including 90 points and above from Robert

Parker and Wine Spectator, as well as being

named in the Top 100 Wines of the Year by

Wine and Spirits Magazine. To date he has

grown production to 6,500 cases, including

several private labels, which are sold in 15

different states.

“I’m most proud of the relationships

I’ve cultivated over the years,” Gary said

currently makes the house Chardonnay

the Halekulani Hotel on Waikiki Beach

well as the house wine for Roy’s RestauranHawaii. “I respect that these companies p

lot of trust in having their name on the w

I make.”

Gary continues to create opportunitie

share his wine and passion with everyon

meets. He and his wife, Teresa, are often

the tasting room visiting with customers

sharing their knowledge. Join them e

Friday night from 5 to 8 p.m. for the Fri

Night Wine Downs, and enjoy live mu

cheese platters and wine by the glass. The

also live music every other Saturday, so m

sure to check their website for upcom

Wandering Dog Wine Bar is a family

owned business by people who are passionateabout wine. Director di Vino, Charles “CT”Williams, has an extensive knowledge of the

local wine country and has a knack for

picking out under the radar wines beforeanyone else has heard of them. Everything

here is “palate-picked” meaning that they tryevery wine that they carry and are not influ-

enced by the latest trends or scores. In fact,

you will not a see a score for any winesanywhere on site.

Leave your leash behind…it is more than

just a motto, it is a way of life here. Theyencourage you to try wines you’ve never

heard of from producers you didn’t knowexisted in places that you never thought

produced wine. This is not the place to

sample your typical Cabernets and Chardon-

nays and, chances are, you may only haveheard of half of the wines that they carry.

With a wide variety of wine, beer andsparkling from artisan producers along theCentral Coast, as well as from around the

world, there is always something for

everyone. Enjoy one of the themed flights ororder a glass of wine and relax with friends. If

you need a little break from all of the wine, doa beer flight instead, or just kick back with a

cold one! The only thing better than wine and

beer is having some “little bites” to go alongwith it, so they offer a nice array of gourmet

antipasto and cheese platters as well as deli-

cious chocolate truffles and handmade toffee. For those visiting on a Thursday, stop in

for the Blind Tasting from 4 to 7 p.m. Eachweek features different themes and guests are

challenged to match up regions, varietals,

price points and vintages of the four wi

included. There are also fun wine cla

throughout the year on Tuesdays fromto 7:30 p.m. Check out the websitewww.wanderingdogwinebar.com for

The stunning Santa Barbara coastline has a new jewel in its trea-sure chest – Conway Family Wines has announced the opening of their Deep Sea Tasting Room on Stearns Wharf. Located at thegateway to the Central Coast wine region, the light-filled, spaciousupstairs tasting room has a distinct contemporary feel, with anexpansive tasting bar. Additional seating is avail-able and provides a very natural addition to thespace with the artisan crafted table, seats andbenches constructed by the Conway brothers, out of transformed French oak wine barrels. Visi-tors are invited to indulge in a glass of wine outon the venue’s deck, which reveals a picture

perfect 360-degree panoramic viewof the Pacific, Santa Barbara Harbor,Channel Islands and Riviera, and aglimpse of passing sea lions andpelicans.

Open daily until 8 p.m., TastingRoom Manager Brandi Rosandercommented that, “the location is apopular destination for diners, whodrop in for a glass of wine and enjoy the beautiful sunset from thedeck”. The tasting menu includes the Deep Sea Chardonnay andDeep Sea Red wines. Guests have the opportunity to purchaselimited production selections from the Conway Family Wines port-

folio, such as the acclaimed Rancho Arroyo Grande Mourvèdre and aChardonnay from the iconic Bien Nacido Vineyard. Future plansinclude special events, food and wine pairings and live music. Thespace is also available for private event rental.

The Conway family of Santa Barbara welcome visitors to sample

their Deep Sea wines, whichstrive to capture the maritimeinfluence present in Californiamost prominent coastal vine-yards. The wines origins incluestates composed of ancient sbeds, prominent with seashellfossils. The Conway Family

Wines seashell logo is reminiscent of this oceanic terroir and represents their commiment to crafting quality wines.
