Students Hoop it Up at anti-violence tourney Jane-Finch, Rexdale youngsters see a rivalry, but coach says, 'We're going to get them to partner up' LOUIE PIACENTINI Etobicoke Guardian Dec. 14, 2005 Two schools with similar backgrounds, yet seemingly miles apart, shared one common love this weekend and they did it together. For both Monsignor Percy Johnson and James Cardinal McGuigan Catholic high schools, the tie that binds them is basketball. Monsignor Johnson, a Rexdale-based school, temporarily residing in North York's Jane-Finch community while awaiting completion of a new building, is continuously shadowed by the spectre of gangs, crime and violence and the negative perception that follows both their home and adopted neighbourhoods. Located at Keele Street and Finch Avenue, James Cardinal McGuigan's students are also seemingly relegated to living with these stereotypes because of its proximity to the Jane-Finch corridor.

But this weekend, both institutions hosted a 16-team Hoop it Up - Breaking Down the Borders junior basketball tournament - not only to enjoy lay-ups, dunks and shoe squeaks, but to also give their students something they can use to combat the negativity: the power to change it. "This is just a way to take the initiative to stop it," said Paul Raso, McGuigan teacher and tournament co-organizer. "The goal is to have the kids take control. What goes on out there (teachers) can't stop, the police can't stop, but we need the kids to take control of their lives and be responsible for their community."

A career studies and philosophy teacher as well as coach of the junior basketball team, Raso said the proceeds raised from the tournament will go toward an all-day retreat for members of the McGuigan Wolves and Johnson Jaguars junior boys' teams. The goal is simple - get them to work together and not against one another.

"They're under this perception that there is this rivalry (between Rexdale and Jane-Finch) so we're going to get them to partner up," Raso said during Friday's action. "I think this is a first step in bridging both schools." Help will also come at the retreat, through Toronto Police 31 Division's anti-bullying, anti-violence programs. During the tournament, Toronto Argonauts football players and coach Pinball Clemons made guest appearances as part of their Stop the Violence campaign and hip-hop artist Kardinal Offishall attended the event and addressed students with an anti-violence message. "There is no doubt the things these kids face today are worse than anything I've had to face in my life," Raso added. "We're giving them the method to change. This is just the first step."

Fellow organizer Paul Morrone, athletic director at Monsignor Johnson, said the state of both neighbourhoods is highly exaggerated - mostly from those living outside the area. "I've lived here for 27 years (in Jane-Finch area) and I've worked (in Rexdale) for five years. I know both areas and I've never worried about being shot," he said. For Morrone, the tournament goes a step further by getting student volunteers and not just the players to work together. "We are trying to get them to work together, not against each other," Morrone said. "There's a lot of good people in these schools and there are a lot of great kids here." On the final day of the tournament Saturday, more than 50 students from both schools worked together manning the doors, working scoreboards and preparing game sheets. "We're trying to get our school noticed in basketball," said Andrew Tinsley, a Grade 11 student and tournament volunteer at Johnson. "And we like to give a good show for the community." A date and a site has yet to be determined for the team retreat, but Morrone is aiming for the event to be held annually.

Let us remember in prayer the souls of the deceased members of the TCDSB

community and their loved ones, particularly the following who have died recently... for these we pray:

May the angels lead them into paradise. May the martyrs come to welcome them into the

new and eternal Jerusalem. The holy sacrifice of the Mass will

be offered for their souls. May they rest in peace.
