Rules

Use an apostrophe to show possession. The possession is named after the owner.

Plural nouns do NOT need an apostrophe. Plural just means there are more than one of that thing.

Note: Just because a word has an “s” at the end does not mean it needs an apostrophe!! In Ms. Bates’ class, this is going to be a zero-sum issue: it happens, you rewrite the entire sentence.
