A sense of our historyHistory of Jean Nielfounded in 1779
Niel, it’s first of all a family history; a family who, in
1779, in Grasse - the cradle of the perfume industry -
created an enterprise of the future.
Over the course of time, Jean Niel has developed and
enhanced its original activities, and it’s for this reason
that the company is today the oldest perfume factory
still active in the Grasse area and one of the rare
privately owned family businesses in the trade.
Niel is also a history of ingenuity and tenacity; that of
the women and men engaged in this family saga; the
women and men who have succeeded one another, at
the head of the organization, generation after generation.
Jean Niel: a history of talent and success which has
lived through the centuries and which lives on today in
perpetuity.

The company was created by a perfumer and
merchant who distilled aromatic plants from Provence.
Subsequent generations were to further develop the
family business, manufacturing floral pomades and
becoming a supplier to the leading Parisian perfumeries
at that time.
Jean-Antoine (1755-1846), Antoine Honoré (1784-
1848), Jean-Antoine (1810-1867).
Marie-Claire Niel (1851-1924), daughter of Jean-
Antoine, married Jean Foucard and began exporting
oils and pomades scented with rose, orange flower,
jasmine, violet and sweet acacia, as well as perfumed
waters, sweet almond oil, olive oil, dried sweet acacia
and orange blossom, strips of green orange peel and
scent extracts from jasmine, rose, heliotrope, violet and
sweet pea flowers. And so, by 1873, several elegant
compositions: “BouquetVictoria”,“Bouquet d’Impératrice”,
“Fleurs d’Italie”, “Caprice de Valérie”.

Lucie Foucard-Niel (1844-1922),
only child of Marie-Claire married
later on Gustave de Boutiny who
continued developing this line of
business, as did his son Jean and now, in turn, his two
sons Antoine and Christophe de Boutiny.
Leading the organization for the past 30 years, they
have been able to preserve the company’s total financial
& industrial independence.
The construction of a new factory of 3800 square
meters on the outskirts of Grasse, which was completed
just after the year 2000 and was fitted with high
performance production equipment, well suited to
new industrial demands and constraints, attests to their
ability to adapt to the times.
Today, Georges and Marie (9th generation), the
respective children of Antoine and of Christophe, are
actively preparing themselves at the heart of the
enterprise, to take up the responsibility of consolidating
the success to date and of supporting development
efforts which will guarantee the future of JEAN NIEL.

then treated select ones to a process of hemi synthesis.

the treatment of raw materials, has served as the basis
for our sublime compositions.
Using these preciously preserved unique procedures,
blended with current industrial methods, our scientific
technicians guarantee the development and production
