Market Update & News Firmenich names new CEO Firmenich has named a new CEO, Gilbert Gilbertine, to succeed Patrick Firmenich who is moving to take up the position of Deputy Chairman. Mr Gilbertine is coming from Diagio, the multinational drinks company, where he worked for 19 years, and was laterly President Diagio India and Greater China, and Chief Corporate Development Officer. Firmenich is one of the top 3 global flavours and fragrances companies, headquartered in Switzerland. IFF reports increasing sales IFF has reported a 4% increase in Q2 sales, with fragrance business sales inceasing by 8%. Net sales for Q2 were US$757.6 million, with Operating Profit up 8% to US$153.1 million. Sales to emerging markets accounted for 49% of total company sales, and if Fragrance Ingredients were excluded, accounted for 52% of sales, illustrating clearly the importance of emerging markets in the flavours and fragrances business. Naturex Personal Care Unit becomes UEBT member The personal care unit of Naturex has become a member of UEBT (Union for Ethical BioTrade) – as part of its sustainability strategy. Sandalwood sold by international tender Tropical Forest Services (TFS, Australia) offered for sale by international public tender approximately 180 tonnes of Indian sandalwood (Santalum album). The wood has come from 12 to 15 year old trees in plantations managed by TFS in Western Australia. TFS has over 9,000 hectares of Indian Sandalwood (Santalum album) trees established in the tropical north of Australia of which TFS has an effective ownership of over 3,100 hectares. TFS plantations are owned and managed on behalf of shareholders and both retail and institutional investors. Through the acquisition of the distiller Mt Romance, TFS can also offer organic Sandalwood oil (Santalum spicatum) to buyers in the global fragrance market. IFEAT 2015 to be held in Colombo, Sri Lanka IFEAT have announced that the 2015 annual conference will be held in Colombo, Sri Lanka from 27 September to 1 October 2015. Further information will be available at the Rome, Italy conference later this month (21-25 September 2014). Doehler launches new herb & spice extracts and natural Blossom Flavours Doehler has launched a new range of herb and spice extracts, and natural blossom flavours in response to increasing consumer demand for botanical flavours. The new range includes a selection of natural blossom flavours – rose, violet, lavender,

hibiscus and lotus blossom – and a selection of spice and herbs – oregano, rosemary, caraway, cardamom, chilli, pepper, sage, thyme and basil. The industry has seen a recent trend for the inclusion of blossom flavours in foods and drinks, whereas in the past these were primarily associated with cosmetic, fragrance and the pharmaceutical industries. In 2013 alone, 70 new soft drinks were introduced with the taste of rose, for example. Prova to produce vanilla flavour range in India PROVA, a manufacture of extracts of vanilla, cocoa, coffee, and other gourmet notes for the food industry is to launch production of its vanilla flavouring PROVANIL specially tailored for the Indian market. Symrise completes acquisition of Diana Group Symrise AG has completed the acquisition of the French Diana Group, a leading manufacturer of natural flavours. The combined sales of Symrise and Diana are €2.3 billion, making Symrise one of the leading multinational flavour and fragrance houses by sales value, with a very large portfolio of natural ingredients and extracts. Coriander market prices remain high Coriander seed prices continue to remain high, partly driven by the on-going Russia/Ukraine problems. The current matrix of sanctions in place between the EU and Russia are also likely to make import of coriander oil from Russia problematic. Few African countries have developed coriander seed production for distillation of the essential oil, but this continues to offer an opportunity. Zanzibar on track to increase clove and other essential oil exports Zanzibar is in the process of implementing a comprehensive clove rehabilitation programme to boost clove production – as part of which it is distributing 1 million clove seedlings to farmers. As clove production rises it is expected that production of clove oils (notably clove stem oil) will rise, as production has primarily been constrained by a shortage of feedstock. In addition to clove oils, Zanzibar is also developing production and export of a range of other essential oils, including lemongrass, eucalyptus, cinnamon leaf and bark oils, and citronella oil. Distillation and export is undertaken both by the Zanzibar State Trading Corporation (ZSTC), a government parastatal, which has an excellent large distillation facility on Pemba Island, and a number of small private sector enterprises. Argan oil market developments. Earthoil, a subsidiary of Treatt PLC, is working with pioneering organic skincare company, Neal's Yard Remedies, to supply argan seed oil from the Souss Valley area of Morocco. With unique cosmetic properties, as well as organic status, the argan seed oil is sourced from the only Fairtrade producer in the world. Earthoil's oil responds to increased demand for traceable raw materials, enabling the creation of credible, ethical personal care products.

Argan oil is a popular treatment for skin conditions and a well-known cosmetic oil for skin and hair due to its proven nourishing properties. Rich in unsaturated and essential fatty acids, argan oil contains in excess of 70 per cent oleic and linoleic acids, making it ideal for use as a skin moisturiser and revitaliser. It also boasts strengthening properties making it beneficial for shampoos, conditioners and nail care products. Earthoil's argan oil is produced by over 60 women in an all-female co-operative in Morocco, formed to provide a way out of poverty. Established in 2007, the co-operative members extract the argan oil using traditional skills and processes. The women handle every aspect of the business, from fruit collection and transportation by donkey to hand-cracking and pressing the hard nuts into oil, meaning the oil is completely traceable to its source. The co-operative is the only Fairtrade certified argan oil producer in the world and it has had a hugely positive impact on its members' lives since its formation. Source: Earthoil

Brazil orange crop still expected to maintain oil production levels There are a range of views on the status of the Brazilian orange crop and prices. Currently, inventories of juice are lower than for the past 3 years, and juice yields from the coming crop will be lower due to the past drought. However, even if oil yield per fruit is down it is expected that the overall production of orange oil will be equal to or higher than last year. Florida’s crop is in crisis and expected to be below 100 million boxes for the 2014/2015 season. If the crop estimate – due in October – is lower than 90 to 95 million boxes then prices may firm as a result. But current prices for orange oil are judged to be high, especially given the sluggish terpene market. Source: Treatt

Eucalyptus oil price rises Production of Eucalyptus oil in the major production area of Yunnan Province, China is reported to be significantly down as a result of poor weather conditions – heavy frosts through December to February, with the current rainy season (July/September) further restricting the collection of material for distillation. Labour costs are also reported to be rising in the area. The overall result has been to increase prices. Source: Treatt

Tea Tree oil demand remains firm Demand for tea tree oil continues to remain firm, with the industry reporting little carryover of stocks from one production season to the next. Litsea Cubeba oil production down The current year production is reported to be 30-40% down on previous years, largely as a result of poor weather in the production areas, and prices are expected to increase back to recent historic highs. IFEAT Conference: record attendance There was a record attendance at this year’s IFEAT conference held in Rome, Italy, this week – 21 to 25 September. Over 1,100 people attended the opening reception on the Sunday. The conference included a full set of lectures on the essential oil industry of the Mediterranean region. The 2015 IFEAT Conference will be held in Colombo, Sri Lanka, over the 27 September to 1st October 2015, at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel. A date for your diary. Summer rain affects organic lavender crop and prices Summer rainfall in Bulgaria and France has adversely affected organic lavender and lavendin crops. Bulgaria’s lavender crop is projected to be around one third down and prices are rising in consequence. Summer rainfall in some parts of France has reduced the lavendin crop in some areas restricting overall supply, and prices are reported to be up by around 10%. Political turmoil in N Africa results in reduced organic rosemary production Organic rosemary production from N Africa origins has been adversely impacted by the unstable political situation in the region. As a result volumes are down, and prices rising.

PRODUCT & MARKET NOTES

US Essential Oil Imports, 2009-2013, Part 1 US Imports of Essential Oils, 2009 to 2013 – Part One Import volumes and unit values for a range of essential oil imports into the US are given in the Tables below. Data for a further range of oils will be given in a subsequent note. Care is needed in assessing import price information as in many cases the data presented will cover a range of qualities. In some cases, the data will cover several different oil types – clove oil data will include both clove bud oil, clove stem oil, and clove leaf oil, and prices are different for each of these oils; cassia oil data covers both cassia and ‘true’ cinnamon oils, etc. However, not withstanding these complications, the data give an indication of prices, volumes and trends. In general the European import market is larger than the US market for essential oils, with France having a controlling position in the import of many essential oils. European imports will be 30 to 50% higher than US imports in many cases. However, the EU only gives a breakdown of imports for a restricted range of essential oil, so the US provides a better data set. 1. Geranium oil Production of geranium oil is dominated by Egypt and China, with prices for conventional oils fluctuating in the range US$100 to US$130/kg. Very small quantities of ‘rose’ geranium oil (bourbon oil) are produced in a number of African countries – South Africa, Madagascar, Rwanda – and this oil commands a significant price premium.

2. Vetiver oil Production of vetiver oil is dominated by Haiti, with Indonesia the second, but very much smaller, origin. Prices fluctuate substantially depending on availability, but are typically in the range US$130 to US$150/kg.

3. Eucalyptus oil Production of eucalyptus oil is dominated by China. A range of secondary sources also supply, including Brazil, India, Australia, South Africa. There are a range of eucalyptus oil types – medicinal (cineole rich); perfumery (citronellal type); industrial (piperitone type) – and care is therefore needed in interpreting prices and volumes.

4. Citronella oil Indonesia is the major supplier of citronella oil, followed by China. Import prices are in the range US$15 to US$18/kg. Sri Lanka makes a small supply to the market, but from a different grass species.

5. Lemongrass oil Supply is dominated by India and Guatemala. Each origin supplies from a different species, East and West Indian lemongrass respectively, with West Indian oil obtaining a premium.

Page 9

6. Patchouli oil Supply of patchouli oil is dominated by Indonesia, although India is now starting to emerge as a second significant source. India has been developing patchouli production for some years, but given the scale of its domestic demand has only recently started to make significant exports. A number of African countries are also trying to develop supply, including Madagascar, Rwanda, and Ghana. Guatemala is also developing supply. Prices for patchouli oil can fluctuate significantly, but is currently fairly stable in the range US$40 to US$60/kg.

7. Clove oils Prodution of all types of clove oil – leaf, stem and bud – is dominated by Indonesia. Madagascar, the largest exporter of cloves, also exports some oil, typically clove leaf oil.

8. Cassia (and Cinnamon) oils Supply of cassia oils is dominated by China, with a range of SE Asian countries also making supply. Sri Lanka supplies true cinnamon oil (from Cinnamomun verum, syn C. zylanicum). The low prices shown here for Sri Lankan oils indicate that the imports are of cinnamom leaf oil, not the bark oil.

9. Cedarwood oil Supply is dominated by China. Cedarwood oil is obtained from a number of different species, and the US has substantial domestic production.

10. Anise oil China dominates supply.

11. Lime oil Mexico dominates supply. Prices are rising consistently reflecting supply shortages over demand.

12. Bergamot oil Production of bergamot oil is dominated by Italy. A number of African countries have developed the crop – Ivory Coast, Tanzania (Zanzibar) – but production remains small.

SUPPLIERS OF EQUIPMENT

Suppliers to the African market The distillation and extraction industry in Africa is relatively small and localised outside of the North African centers of Egypt and Morocco, and Southern Africa (South Africa, Swaziland). New entrants to the industry can find it hard to identify suppliers of equipment (stills, condensers, extractor vessels etc) in stainless steel, steam boilers, and other necessary materials (drums, jugs, filter papers etc). The development of the industry in Africa would benefit greatly if there was greater sharing of information on the location of suppliers. New entrants would find it easier to identify necessary suppliers, and the concentration of orders on particular suppliers would encourage the development of skills and expertise – this is particularly necessary in the areas of fabrication of stainless steel vessels and condensers. Some contacts of companies involved in the manufacture of distillation/extraction equipment or the capability to do so (primarily the capability to work with stainless steel) or supply of materials based in East Africa are given below. The Newsletter would welcome information from Readers on other suppliers of relevant equipment and materials from all regions of Africa, so that the listing can be expanded. Please send any information to [email protected] The contacts are provided as a service only. NO RECOMMENDATION IS IMPLIED. 1.
