Richmond’s most vulnerable residents are once again living in fear they say, after the owners of Waimea Village told them their lease payments are set to skyrocket again, just one year after it was set by an independent arbitra-tion process. The new lease proposal by Waimea Village owners Michael and Carolyn Wright is now more than 30 per cent of some resident’s weekly pension.Residents own their homes, pay nor-mal council rates and other living costs like power, food and clothing on top of the village payments. decision-making in respect of the provision of infrastruc-ture, regulation and services to the regional community. This will facilitate achievement of sustainable develop-ment and community well-being more effectively than two councils needing to agree on an increasing require-ment for coordinated action, and will be more efficient economically.“Both councils are in a sound financial position but a combined council would have significantly greater capac-ity to deliver services to residents and enhance commu-nity resilience,” he said. The amalgamation process was started in 2009 by Aldo

Miccio, who was then a Nelson City Councillor. His peti-tion collected the signatures of ten per cent of electors in both Nelson and Tasman. The petition forced the Local Government Commission to investigate the benefits of a combined council. Last July the commission announced that it was issuing a draft reor-ganisation proposal to merge the two councils. Since then 395 submissions were sent to the commission and today it announced that it continued to believe that one council would be best for the greater Nelson/Tasman region.Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne, who has opposed amalgamation since Aldo started his petition, says he was not surprised by the decision but he will roll with the punches and expects Tasman voters to send it packing at

the vote.“That is my expectation [a no vote from

Tasman], certainly that’s the view I pick up in Tasman. But what this process will mean we will get a clear indication of what our community wants and that will be very help-ful.”Asked to elaborate why he felt that, he said: “I think they feel their views will be subsumed in something bigger and much less responsive than what we have with Tasman Dis-trict Council and they are happy with that.”What the combined Nelson Tasman Council will look like:A unitary authority for a united Nelson Tasman District, comprising a mayor and 16 members elected from wards as follows: One from Golden Bay, Lakes Murchison, Atawhai, two from Motueka, Moutere-Waimea, three from Richmond, Stoke and Nelson. For more information visit the commission website at www.lgc.govt.nz.

But hope is not lost it seems, Richmond coun-cillor Kit Maling is vowing to help the residents fight what he called “thievery” by the Wrights. Nelson MP Maryan Street al-ready has a private members bill to try and get more protection for the residents as the village is not a registered retirement vil-lage.But none of that seems to bother the Wrights, who are preparing to “gouge” even more out of resi-dent’s life savings, says Kit.The Waimea Village Residents Committee said in its monthly newsletter that: “We are ap-palled at their [Michael and Carolyn’s] irresponsible and inconsiderate proposal and the extent of the levy increase. Their proposed levy is light years away from what the committee con-siders to be a fair and affordable levy payment.”Justifying the increase is WHK principal John Murray. Acting for the Wrights, he says he is willing to meet with the residents to explain the increases which give the Wrights more than $100,000 a year for wages, living costs and motor vehicle leases. It also includes, on top of the wages for manag-ing the area, administration costs in excess of $66,000. “WHK should check their moral compass on this. This is just disgusting and I struggle to be-

lieve a company like that is behind it,” says Kit.He also says the stress of having to find extra money will take its toll on residents. “It will put pressure on other bills, they will make choices to save money on heating and eating right and

it will ruin their quality of life.”A son of some residents told the Weekly he was shocked at the at-titude of Michael and Carolyn. “I think it borders on extortion on a vulnerable group of people. As a community we need to stop this.”Last year Richmond councillor Judene Edgar joined Kit to try and help the residents, but with confidentiality of the arbitration process, their hands have been tied to some extent. This latest proposal will bring out the fight in local representa-tives says Kit.“I met with the guy [Michael] last year and he is trying to take a lot out of that business for himself; two cars, a house and a wage of $70,000 which is a joke. I think he has gone into a busi-

ness he didn’t do due diligence on.“I’m flabbergasted that after a sizeable increase a year ago he can go back one year later, when in-flation is running at 4 per cent, and he wants to double it again. That’s ridiculous and unsustain-able when you look at their [residents] incomes and how much they earn. These people are being gouged, this is price gouging and it’s not on. We are going to do something about this.”

Local lass runs off to New YorkPhillip Rollo

Tanya McMurtrie has her sights set on one of the world’s biggest marathons. But she’s not hoping to be richer from the experience, that job is for local foundation, Big Brothers Big Sisters.Tanya, a Brightwater resident, has entered in the New York Marathon and is fundraising for Big Brothers Big Sisters. Her employer, ASB Bank, have a fundraising scheme where they will match the first $750 raised. Tanya hopes to raise even more than that. She is paying for her own flights and accommoda-tion in New York, which she wouldn’t have had any other way. But she is in search for donations to go straight to Big Brothers Big Sisters.Big Brothers Big Sisters matches children and young people aged 6 through 18 with mentors in professionally supported one-to-one relationships. The young people served by the Big Brothers Big Sisters programme are among New Zealand’s most vulnerable. The organisation is a non-profit organisation fund-ed through sponsorship, donations, and grants at both local and national level. Support from indi-viduals, trusts and foundations, businesses, and local and central government is vital to providing mentors for children in the community.Tanya herself is a “Big Sister” for the organisation and knows first hand how important it is for the region’s at risk children. She joined two years ago when she was on holiday in Melbourne and is now matched up with a girl called Ashley. “From day one the whole experience has just been amazing,” she says. “I went in to do it thinking I was going to give back to it, but she just

gives me back ten fold.”Now it is time for Tanya to give back to the founda-tion and she is hoping local fundraisers and sup-porters can help her. Tanya competed in her first marathon in Roto-rua last year, although as she found out halfway through, its hills make it one of the toughest around. She has only been running for four years, but has now entered in many of the region’s runs. She says the New York Marathon was something that has always featured on her to-do list. In 2010 more than 40,000 people entered in the New York Marathon, which finishes at Central Park. “I thought to myself ‘what would be the ultimate?’ and the ultimate would be running the New York Marathon.”Tanya was not fast enough to qualify time-wise for the event, so has entered as part of a tour through a company in the North Island. “Every time I think about it I just get so excited. I was a young girl when Allison Roe won it and I remember watch-ing it for just over two hours. The fact I can run the same streets she did, obviously I’m not going to win it, and to actually finish it is a pretty amazing thing. Especially for someone who up until four years ago didn’t see myself as a runner.”When Tanya trained for the Rotorua marathon, her programme lasted 13 weeks. But now that she has been running half marathons for the past two years, she has plenty of faith in her own ability and fitness. “This time I’ll do a slower approach. I’ll still be running four or five times a week and in my biggest weeks I’ll be clocking up 70/80km.”If you would like to help support Tanya you can email her at [email protected].

Historic tree snapsA large branch off “the most photo-graphed” tree at the Tasman District Council offices snapped on Thursday night. The liquidambar, which is at least 40 years-old, has a special significance to the region because of its size, says Tasman District mayor Richard Kempthorne. It is also the backdrop when new citizens have their photos taken at the TDC of-fices after citizenship ceremonies.Beryl Wilkes, reserves manager for TDC, says liquidambar are “not particu-larly well formed” within the region and that was probably the reason behind the

breakage, although the December rain and strong winds also played its part.Council is unsure of its actual age and whether it was planted prior to the build-ing. One council staff member says it was definitely there in 1976.The tree is protected because of its age and size. “It’s a lovely mature tree on a major roadway.”The broken branch has since been re-moved and further trimming will be done on the remaining branches to en-sure there is no future damage.Wensley Rd next to the TDC office was closed after the fall.

Pat on the back

Patricia Polglase could have retired in 2011, but before she even entertained the thought of putting her feet up, she wanted to reach a milestone of working at Fresh Choice for 25 years. Speaking on the anniversary of her very first day at Fresh Choice Richmond, pre-viously Super Value Richmond, Patricia (66) says retirement still isn’t any closer and has enjoyed every day of the past 25 years. “I think there’s a lot of personal satisfaction but that’s about it. I didn’t expect anything. It was just a fact I was going to be here for this length of time” she says. She is enjoying every minute of it, so has no idea how long she will keep working it. At this stage, retirement isn’t on the cards. “I might start slowing down but I’m certainly not looking at quitting. Of course I’m enjoying it, otherwise I wouldn’t be here.”A clear favourite on the staff roster, she was given a celebration hamper by her work-mates. She says everyone used to have a close friendship, although the increase in staff makes it that wee bit harder, especially with younger employees coming and go-ing. “We were just a little knit group at

the start but now there’s a lot more that have come into it. I’m one of the old ones now, they’re all young and doing their own thing. Whereas I was younger when I started and used to join in.”She calls herself a “jack of all trades” but has spent the majority of her employ-ment on the check out. “Check out is ac-tually my official title.”Owner Gary Watson says Patricia is a valued member of the staff and has been at the supermarket longer than he has. “Our customers love her,” he says. Pat started work with Gary’s father Ian Watson at almost the same time the new shop opened on its current site. Previ-ously it was across the road. She was part of the transition of the su-permarket joining the Richmond Mall but says other than the staff size, and the increase in specials, it hasn’t changed much. “It has always been a great place to work with a real family business at-mosphere”.Patricia says the job has been good to her and living near work, she couldn’t think of a better place to work at, or better peo-ple to work with. Her husband is also working full time and her hobbies include reading and playing bowls.

Vintage machines blow out cobwebs Higgins Park was the place to be on Monday for the annual Yesteryear Show. Members and associates of the Nelson Vintage Engine and Machinery Club had close to 100 contraptions of all shapes and sizes, with some new edi-tions this year.Vintage tractors, transport and military vehicles, stationary engines and steam engines were all chugging away as the

smell of burning wood fuelling engine fires drifted through the park. “It was a very enjoyable show, and although the wind was blowing on Saturday we had a great turnout on Sunday,” says Allan Palmer, vintage club secretary.Free rides on the 108 year-old traction engine and railway jigger were popular as always. Tom Green, a new member of the club set up an excavation machine

with a tennis ball hanging from the bucket on a string. Participants then at-tempted to sit the ball on top of a cone, which all agreed was a lot harder than it looked.“The significant thing about Higgins Park is there are so many different groups based there it means there is such a wide range activities and machinery. There is something for everyone,” says Allan.

BusinessupdateIf you have a car problem, think Nel-son Automotive Solutions. The Rich-mond based business has recently expanded, taking on Leigh Borlase to assist in the workshop. Leigh is a lo-cal, with 30 years experience in the automotive industry and having run his own business in Richmond for 15 years. He has spent two years in a fran-chise in Nel-son gaining more experi-ence, primar-ily with new-er vehicles, but is glad to now be back on home turf; “I’m looking forward to catching up with old cus-tomers and meeting new ones.”As a part of the national Automotive Solutions group, the Nel-son workshop has access to the wealth of knowledge and experience that mechanics at other locations can of-fer. There are many specialised stores throughout the country which work exclusively with makes such as Nis-

san, Subaru, Hyundai, Peugeot and Mitsubishi, so if you have a fairly un-common vehicle, the team at Nelson Automotive Solutions can speak to another workshop and quickly dis-cover the ins and outs of unfamiliar models. With 33 stores nationally, if there’s a query, there will be a store with the solution.

It takes a high standard of w o r k m a n -ship and the proper level of equipment for a workshop to be inducted into the Auto-motive Solu-tions group, so you can be sure the service per-formed by the team at Nelson Autom ot ive Solutions is of the best quality.

The Nelson Automotive Solutions garage can be found at 66 Main Rd Hope, just before the Caltex as you head away from Nelson. Come in to meet the team; Leigh Borlase looks forward to seeing familiar faces and meeting new customers.

Richmond Fire Fighters Craig Clayworth and Phil Quelch replace a length of hose under pressure at the West Coast Provincial Asso-ciation Championship. While the Richmond crew were unable to gain any results from the

competition, which only rewards West Coast fire fighters, it was another competitive train-ing run as they prepare for the South Island Championship in Methven later in the year. Richmond sent down 12 competitiors who en-

tered in a four-person and two-person team.Craig Piner says the competition is based on real life fire scenarios. “It’s anything from sucking water out of a pump and hitting tar-gets with it through to putting out hose reels. It’s all time-based fire fighting activities,” he says. The crew has only been competing together for six months. Photo: Blair Hall/Photoaction.co.nz.

This Week WEDNESDAY 1 February 2012 11

Just a thought...I’d climbed high out above the rimrock of the large basin and had been travers-ing the ridgeline which was now bathed in full sun. Down below on one side of the ridge a flotilla of mountain ranges floated in a sea of fog while off in the distance some rowdy kea heralded my presence to all the wild horizons beyond.I was tired, chest still thumping from the exertion of the climb, but I loved it. Easing down onto a chunk of gran-ite I sat to take it all in and somehow none of the battles to get here mattered anymore. There had been the choked chasms of the gorge far below and then the grind up the steep side of the wa-terfall.I was in Fiordland and the panoramas

are as picturesque as anywhere. I love these mountain-top moments and they have become a favourite retreat for me. During those times to pause I can take everything in, life slows down somewhat and I’m reminded again of some lyrics from a song my parents used to sing: “The stars are the candles and they light up the mountains, mountains are altars of God. Oh the place where I worship is those wide open spaces, built by the hand of the Lord.” In my late teens I easily turned to Chris-tianity because of all those times I had spent in such wide-open spaces. The Bible says in the book of Romans; “For since the creation of the world his invis-ible attributes, his eternal power and di-vine nature, have been clearly seen, be-ing understood through what has been

made.”There is a God-shaped vacuum in all of us that cries out to be filled and for me these extra-special times at rest out in the hills refreshes the scope of my place in all of creation and reminds me again of my connection to God and how I should respond.Perhaps you too can find those mo-ments to pause and reflect and connect again to God, then you also will know the bigness of God for your life. This is especially so as we come out of our Summer breaks away with family and friends and as the New Year gets fully wound up again and pressures push in. As a wise old lady once said “Beware the barrenness of a busy life”. Find your particular place of solitude. Pause a while, reflect, reconnect.

Hundreds pop into corn festivalThe birds would have seen a dozen scare-crows and flapped away, but the creations drew flocks of people to the first ever Eye Bright Sweet Corn Festival.A scarecrow making competition might have been the main event, but all of the people in attendance were there for anoth-er reason, to try the sweet corn. Corn fritters and corn on the barbecue were a unique and tasty treat for some, while others preferred some gelato ice cream or the classic sausage and bread.A Model T fire engine excited some chil-dren who got to play with the siren.Members of the National Smokefreerock-quest winners, the Peasants, also per-formed for a healthy crowd that organisers were easily pleased with. “We were absolutely thrilled. We had crowds more people than we expected,” says Eye Bright co-owner Adrienne Owen. She hoped to see the Eye Bright Sweet Corn Festival continue for years to come and be-cause it was in its first year, says people can expect plenty more events next year.Scarecrow winners were; Ethol made by Pinnacle House Day Service, Grace Church. Second was Teen Scarecrow with Attitude made by Olivia King and Holly Phillips. Third place was Sally and Simon made by Sian Leeworthy-Corke. Winners took home a gift basket from Eye Bright.

• Nelson Anniversary weekend would have been spent by many at our spectacular national parks with glistening golden sand beaches, turquoise crystal clear waters or perhaps walking or biking up our mountain ranges. Just a few fantastic reasons why we love our beautiful region and so many people choose to visit.

• My focus for this week – Amazon.Heading up the team of 8, manager Sinead and assistant manager Lydia are both local Nelson girls, who after a working stint in Auckland, moved back down to our amazing Fashion Island Amazon store, bringing back with them a vision to create a style that brought all the passion of surf and skate to the city – with energy, colour and variety. Stocking a new brand of skate gear ‘MO’BADDA’, they have full set ups and decks and accessories. Winter gear is starting to arrive, head in and see the “zon” crew and get dressed for the season.

WINDOW ON WAKEFIELDWakefield Community Council ReportThe Wakefield Community Council would like to wish everyone the very best for 2012 and we hope that you have had an enjoyable festive season, reveling and relaxing with family and friends. We would also like to thank a small group of volunteers for putting up the Christmas lights and decorations - your efforts are greatly appreciated. As always, we would like to welcome anyone who is interested in joining the Wakefield Com-munity Council to attend our next meeting, be-ing held at St Johns Worship Centre on Tuesday 14 February at 7.30pm. Or alternatively, if you have an issue you wish to raise or a particular topic you have an interest in, please feel free to attend at any time. One of the key focus areas for the Wakefield Community Council for 2012, is to breathe some life into the future commu-nity projects and ideas that were discussed when Peter Kenyon facilitated community meetings some time back. We aim to discuss at least one topic at each of our upcoming meetings, in roughly the following order: Develop an ac-tion focused leadership group, Retain the Village nature of Wakefield, First impressions of Wake-field, Services to retain or introduce, National cycleway, Community venues, Heritage build-ings and green spaces, and Youth. Finally, if you would like to contribute an article about someone or something related to Wake-field to this forum, then please feel free to con-tact me on 541 9005. We are always interested in hearing more local news.Sonia Emerson, Secretary/Treasurer

Mainly MusicMainly Music is an opportunity for adults and young children to build memories and spend time together. Each week, parents and caregivers bring their children for a thirty-minute session of music, rhyme, movement, listening and more. The adults must participate in the ses-sion, and in fact, it is vital that they do so, because this encourages the children to enter into the actions and singing. At this session, adults and children are given snacks and refreshments, enjoying each other’s company, and developing social skills. It also allows adults to meet others with young children, provid-ing support for each other. It’s on Mondays at 10am at the Wakefield Village Hall starting on February 13. Cost $2 per family. Please contact Wendy Milson 544 7596 for more information.

Wakefield School PTA Fundrais-ingDue to fantastic community support, the Wakefield School PTA managed to raise $30,000 in 2011 to contrib-ute to the $40,000 cost required to develop a new junior playground at Wakefield School. The playground is required due to roll growth and will help support new entrant children in their transition to school as well as provide age and ability appropri-ate equipment for the younger chil-dren to assist with the development of fine and gross motor skills, spatial awareness, co-ordination, strength, and agility. With the wonderful support of businesses and commu-nity within Wakefield and further afield, this project has been able to proceed quickly. Landscaping work is now underway and children are extremely excited to watch the de-velopment of their playground. The Wakefield School PTA would like to thank everyone who supported this

project - it has been greatly appre-ciated. Thanks to Tasman District Council, one of the outdoor summer movies was screened in Wakefield over the holiday period. The Wake-field School PTA hosted this event as a way to give back something to the community and provide a fun, fam-ily orientated event in Wakefield. It was fantastic to see so many people attend the evening and special men-tion must be made of Dawn Gaul and Linda Simmonds from First Na-tional and Grant Chaney from Ray White who supported this event.

Local Businesses Sponsor School Summer Holiday Reading Pro-grammeDuring the 2010/2011 summer holidays, Wakefield School trialled a Summer Holiday Reading Pro-gramme to encourage students to read regularly over the holiday pe-riod. It proved popular and feedback was so positive it was decided to con-tinue each summer. The students on the programme read regularly over the holidays

and each Wednesday they visit the school library to discuss what they have read with teachers and librar-ians. They then select new books for the next week. At the end of the holidays students who have met the requirements of the programme are rewarded. This year we are fortunate to have gained sponsorship for the programme from local businesses. Wakefield School would like to thank the following businesses for their sponsorship and also staff and par-ents who have contributed: Waimea Contract Carriers Ltd, Bryant Log-ging, 88 Valley Engineering.

WAY2GO is a Tasman District Coun-cil established initiative providing opportunities for people to get active and increase fitness levels in a fun and social environment. Way2Go programmes are affordable offering a great way to meet new people while having a positive impact on health and well- being. The Wakefield Pro-gramme is being co-ordinated by Moutere Hills Community Centre. If there is anything that you would like

to see on offer, if there is something happening that we are not yet aware of in the community, or perhaps you can be a provider for a new activity, please email Vanessa at [email protected] Plus don’t forget the popular “Live Well, Stay Well” group which meets once a fortnight at 9:45am – 11:00am at the Wakefield Village Hall (on Tuesdays prior to the Over Fifties Flexicise). This is a healthy living and social group for the over 50’s living in both Wakefield and Brightwa-ter where a varied programme is arranged being both informative and fun. The first speaker for the year is on March 20 where Fiona Newery will be speaking to the topic “The Cycle Trail is com-ing to Wakefield”. Take a scenic drive around Best Island to the sweeping greens of Greenacres Golf Club. Golf-ers are rewarded with breathtaking views and 18 beautifully maintained holes to test or hone their skills. With the 2012 golf season about to begin, Green-acres Golf Club is holding a membership drive, excited at the prospect of encouraging new or re-turning golfers to their club and the skilful sport of golf. The season will officially begin with the Club Open Day being held on Saturday Febru-ary 4, which welcomes anyone who wants to play, whether you’ve played golf before or not, to come along for a round and experience what the club offers for a minimal entry fee.Participants are placed in groups at one of the 18 holes and begin on a “shotgun start” at 10am, meaning that everyone tees off at once. It takes about four hours to complete the 18 holes, and there is a prize giving afterwards for anyone who performed well. There will be drinks and nibbles available in the clubhouse to enjoy as you min-gle with fellow golfers. It’s a great opportunity for new players to experience the sport, or returning players to see what Greenacres Golf Club has to offer. The following Tuesday, February 7, is the Wom-en’s Open Day. The day is run on the same formu-la, and while the Club Open Day welcomes any-one, men and women, the Women’s Open Day is all about giving ladies a chance to play with their

friends without so much pressure placed on com-peting well. The Women’s 9 Hole Open Day is on Thursday February 16, and their season begins from then. Played every Thursday, the 9 hole golf option gives women the opportunity to play and enjoy golf without having to commit to playing 18 holes each time. The rounds take less time and are less strenuous than playing all 18 holes, and it’s a great way to meet up with friends and socialise with other women in the community. The Club Open Day on February 4 signals the start of the 2012 season. Throughout the season, club members have the chance to play in tourna-ments at varying skill levels. The Club Champi-onships require players to partake in a qualifying round, which separates them into groups of 16 based on ability. This allows more skilled players to engage in fair competition, while those who play at a higher handicap are competing amongst equals. This gives everyone a greater chance to win their division, as you compete with others at your level rather than the entire spectrum of skill. The Sunshine Veterans Classic is a tournament for over 55’s run on Wednesday February 8 and Thursday 9. Entries close Wednesday February 1 however, so if you’d like to play, make sure to get in quick to register. Spectators are welcome for those who want to watch the action or be there to support a loved one.Players who want to compete on a greater level

Derrick Gould, the new manager at Greenacres Golf Club, encourag-es new members to sign up and enjoy all the Greenacres has to offer.

have the chance to partake in interclub tour-naments. Golfers compete on three 18 hole courses and six 9 hole courses within the Tas-man region. More skilled players can compete in the Elite Group, known as the Tasman Cup for men and the Westrupp Cup for women. There are equivalent handicap tournaments for those who aren’t up to competing with the pro-fessionals.Greenacres has a reputation for producing skilled golfers, with four out of five of the Tas-man District’s representatives in 2011 being members of the club. This is in part due to the high level of coaching available at Greena-cres. One coach of note is Alistair Palmer, the resident NZPGA professional at Greenacres. Alistair is available for one-on-one lessons with club members that cover any aspect of your game, be it driving and pitching, putting and chipping, or getting your ball out of that troublesome bunker. Group lessons are also available for a lower charge, and under 19’s are

coached at half price. As of September last year the management of Greenacres was passed into the capable hands of Derrick Gould. Recently retired, Derrick was thrilled when a friend mentioned the position was available. He has played golf all his work-ing life, both in South Africa and New Zealand, competing in tournaments himself and loving the game. “I work from 9 until 3.30 and then go play 9 holes of golf. The course is fantastic; it’s quite unique because it’s on an island.”He encourages new members to sign up and take advantage of the perks the club offers. “We’ve got such a fantastic facility but there’s always room for more members. We get maybe sixty people playing the course daily, but there’s room for twice that many.” Members can play on the course any time, store their golf clubs, and also have insurance on their clubs in case they are broken or damaged while playing.Members also get a significant discount on greens fees at Greenacres as well as many

The annual Women’s Lifestyle Expo returns to the NelsonTrafalgar Centre this April. This must-see event for women changes every year and the 2012 Expo will have some great new features including a new Craft Zone and an extended Taste of NZ Zone.Renee Murray, from organisers Peacock Pro-motions, says last year the Taste Zone was very popular so this year they have managed to add even more sites in and also include some differ-ent gourmet delights on offer.“We like to have interactive sites within the Expo and the chance to try new and different food proved to be a lot of fun last year.”The Women’s Lifestyle Expo has over one hun-dred local and national companies on board this year with products ranging from skincare to Indian head massages. Plus there will be some great items on sale and lots of those famous Expo specials says Renee.“There are some fabulous companies in this re-gion that many of us don’t know about because we simply don’t drive past that area, or have always been meaning to visit but we get side-tracked with daily life and never get there. The Expo allows you to discover these compa-nies in one fun day. Our expo has really struck a chord with local women through our personal approach and ability to feature items not nor-mally seen at other exhibitions.”A new exhibitor to the Expo, Shott Beverages, will be showcased in the Taste Zone sampling and selling their award winning coffee syr-ups, smoothie bases and yummy cocktail mix-ers. Based in Wellington Shott Beverages have gained a NZ wide following and are well known for their their coffee syrups which are used in

the best cafes and restaurants. They find the Expo a great place to meetthousands of women in one weekend and the personal environment allows them to easily promote their company and answer questions about their products. With a few months to go until the Expo week-end there are some sites left available. With Robyn HollisGr wing Things

The first month of the year seems to have just flown past quickly and I do hope you are having better start to it than we have! They say things “happen in threes” – if this is the case we had better hope that’s right!Firstly I was pulled over the other week by a very friendly (and very young!) policeman and was told that I had not stopped at an intersection and would I be so good as to pay a $150 fine. I was very embarrassed and apologised etcetera, but the fine still had to be paid. Off home to ex-plain to John what I had done. No worries, says he, and proceeds to tell me of his day. Going over a farm that day he took a short cut under a dairy

shed tunnel and filled his boots and soaked his trousers in dairy effluent ( Cow urine!) The strange smell at the back door was enough to let me know he wasn’t joking and I still can’t have those boots in the house.A few days after that I came home to find him looking very sheepish as he told me that he had just come from the mechanics. Lots on his mind, he said, and had stopped to fill his truck and proceeded to put 14 litres of pet-rol into a diesel tank! A rather expen-sive mistake and one he will not make again I am sure. Things must get bet-ter from here on..!Back to the garden, which is a much safer place for the both of us at pre-sent. Before planting out daffodils and freesias make sure the ground is well dug over and the addi-

tion of some bulb food and compost is a good idea.

• Our barkblower is equipped with 60m plus of flexible hose, so blowing/spreading

A couple of months ago I emptied out some bulbs from old pots that I wanted to throw out. I ended up with loads of mixed bulbs which have now dried off well and will be replanted in the garden in a week or two. February is the month to replant bulbs and already we are seeing anemones, ra-nunculus and early flowering crocus in the shops. For the best results I suggest planting anemones and ranunculus into shallow trays of potting mix. Keep them in a cool shady place until they are well established and then carefully plant them out.

Before planting out daffodils and freesias make sure the ground is well dug over and the addition of some bulb food and compost is a good idea. Now is also a good time to check on your house-plants and pots that may have dried out while you have been away. If the mix has shrunk from the sides leave the pot standing in a bucket of water for a while and then apply a wetting agent like Sat-uraid that we spoke of last time. Many ferns also need trimming back at this time of year and a liq-uid feed will help them put on fresh new growth.I am lucky to have neighbours with a really prolific lemon tree. It really seems to be a good season so far with many trees just laden with fruit and I do use heaps of lemons in cooking, for juice, in chut-neys and dressings etcetera. Here is my favourite way of preserving lemons:For a preserving jar size use approx 4-6 small firm lemons.Approx 75grams of salt per jar – I use flaky sea saltFresh lemon juice – approx juice from 6 lemons Zest from 2 lemonsCinnamon stick, star anise or cloves.

Cut the lemons almost into quarters leaving them attached at the stalk end.Stuff as much salt as you can into the cuts, squeeze them back into shape and push them into the jar, stalk end down, packing them in tightly – they will need some gentle persuasion.Sprinkle over the rest of the salt, add the cinna-mon stick, star anise etcetera half fill with lemon juice, and seal. Leave for 4 or 5 days turning the jar over, until they have produced quite a lot of juice, then top up the jar with more lemon juice so that they are completely covered.Seal the jar and leave for up to 6 weeks before us-ing. To use the lemon, remove from the brine and discard the pulp. Use the rind finely sliced to fla-vour Mediterranean dishes, or in sauces, dressing etc. Store in the fridge once you have opened the jar.I was given two tajines for Christmas and so I have no excuse not to use my preserved lemons in this Moroccan style cookware.

Q: Kirsty from Tahuna wanted to know a bit about the “new” insect pest that has been attacking our tomato and potato crops for the last couple of sea-sons. I was given some information by the good folk at Bay Nurseries so here goes.A: The tomato/potato psyllid is from North America and was first detected in NZ in 2006. The psyllid adult and nymphs cause damage to the plants by feeding on the leaves and by transmit-ting a bacterial pathogen called Liberibacter, that lives in plants. On tomatoes the damage can be seen as a curl-ing and cupping of the leaves, slight yellowing of the growing tip and fruit may be small and mis-shapen.On potatoes the same curling and scorching ef-fect can be seen. The stem can be swollen and the plants collapse prematurely. When plants are dug they have not formed tubers.Control: It is thought that several insecticide sprays currently on the market may help but none have been fully tested in NZ. Confidor and Ma-vrick are the two suggested but would have to be used on the underside of the leaves every 7 to 14 days to kill the nymphs ( most insecticides will not kill eggs.) Strengthening the plants with Seasol and adding Neem pellets to the soil may also aid in helping the plants fight this pest. I hope this helps Kirsty but not a lot is known about the life span of these pests, it’s all a bit trial and error!Until next time – enjoy the summer!

Tigers denied in super over

Classic serves up a good show

Phillip Rollo

It only took one hit from ACOB’s Marty Kain to edge the competition’s newcomers towards a final spot and also to deny the defending champions, WTTU, the right to contest at Saxton Oval. The Richmond cricketer clubbed a six in the first ball of ACOB’s super over needing only three runs after he had picked up two wickets during Robbie’s Bar & Bistro Waimea Toi Toi United’s sole over. Both teams had completed their innings on 127.The result, combined with WTTU’s earlier eight-wicket loss to Hot Mama’s Motueka now sees Car Company Stoke/Nayland and ACOB in the driv-er’s seat with only one weekend left in the round robin before a date at Saxton Oval is confirmed.Ricky Edwards’ 36 and Mason Thelin’s 39 helped in WTTU’s original run chase, chasing 127. Before eventually falling just one run short of victory at 127 for nine.WTTU had reached just 111 against Motueka, which was in return reached in just the 13th over with only two wickets down.Greg Hay and skipper Jon Routhan both reached 25 runs while Mason added a solid 21. The day didn’t get much better for WTTU’s neighbours, Taylor’s Contracting Wander-ers, who had two losses in their matches. Daniel Cooper hit 59 runs in their opening 44-run loss to Stoke/Nayland before being beaten by Mo-tueka. Sam Ellis hit a half century in the second match. They could only manage 141 for 6 after winning the toss.

Pat Shone and Teryn Proracki were too classy as they sealed a 2-0 vic-tory against Armins Vensberg and Brent McGlashen at the Brightwa-ter Nelson Anniversary Classic on Monday afternoon.Pat and Teryn had previously beaten Sam McCreary and Marlborough’s Luka Velebit in the semi-final and Jack Robb and Dylan Wells in the quarters. The event was held at the Bright-water Beach Club. The tournament previous to this was moved to Ta-hunanui Beach because of flooding. Around 20 of the region’s top players took part. The next event is the Kaiteriteri Twilight Tournament held this Sat-urday at 4pm. It will be followed by the Port Nelson Open on Monday morning, held at Tahunanui Beach. For more information and registra-tion forms, search Volley Nelson Bays at www.facebook.com.

Derby action ignites crowd

An oil leak ignites on Richmond driver Andre Evans’ car during the Classic Hits Demolition Derby on Saturday. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

The bash, crash and smash returned for the Classic Hits Demolition Derby as forty drivers left literally everything on the clay.Saturday night’s wildest ride went to Rich-mond’s Andre Evans. With his car en-gulfed in flames he continued to speed around the Tahuna Beach Holiday Park Speedway course for at least 15 seconds before his derby hopes were extinguished. It was the 24th time Andre had entered the derby, but it was clearly the most exciting for the Jacks Tyres employee who was also competing against his boss. When he saw

flames coming through the bonnet, after an oil leak, he wasn’t prepared to stop. “I just wanted to go faster and keep going. But that’s when I spun out and I thought I better stop when I saw the fire-fighters come running over,” he says.It was survival of the fittest and despite this year’s prize package given to the driver who completed ten laps first, there were only a handful of drivers left to weave their way through the wreckage.Winner, Isaac Russ, used all his speedway nous as he made the transition from pro-duction saloon to derby car. He says the $500 prize money will go towards a super

saloon he is building from scratch and was clearly stoked to win. “I’m absolutely rapt eh. When I was lining up at the start I thought there was no way I was going to win this. I thought there was no point try-ing, I may as well go out and have some fun,” he says. “But the car kept going; it didn’t even lose any water.”Isaac had been given the car by his boss and was planning on giving it to his broth-er Josh to use for spare parts. But he en-tered it in the derby instead. He says the secret was making sure you hit, without damaging the radiator. One driver who had entered in the Classic

Hits Demolition Derby for the first time was Kenny Nolan. Kenny, along with two friends, one of which is street stock driver Daniel Kitto, was still buzzing the morn-ing after the race. He says his tactics for the race went out the window as soon as the green light flashed and judging by the front of his car, he got plenty of good hits in.Kenny was the first out of the trio in the infield, but says he will definite-ly be back next year. “I had a front on hit and it ruined me,” he says. Daniel took a nasty hit to the driver’s side door, but was unharmed.

SPEEDWAY: Dale Ewers has lost the 1NZ ti-tle, finishing 17th place at the New Zealand Super Stock Championship in Huntly over the weekend. Craig Boote was the next best fin-isher in 20th place. Dale will now switch focus to the team’s champs in Palmerston North this weekend where the Nelson Tigers will hope to make up for last year’s disappointment. Satur-day night at the Tahuna Beach Holiday Park Speedway featured three different club cham-pionships. 9n Rex ‘Pumpkin’ Collier took out

the stockcars with 73n Shannon Marr claiming street stock glory. 2NZ Dallas Kelman and Adie Drake won the sidecar event through a run off, after they had a rare loss.

CROQUET: Greg Bryant is now a double na-tional champion, claiming the single and dou-ble titles last weekend. The win moves the Richmond Croquet Club member into the top six ranking in the world.

RUGBY: Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers will now contest the Nelson Bays division one rugby competition for 2012. Wanderers are the current division two champions and will field a team in each of the divisions this year. One notable addition to the club is ITM Cup hooker Dan Perrin.

Wairoa Gorge’s Wyn Masters in action during the RaboDirect New Zealand Mountain Bike Championship held in Nelson over the week-end. Of the big winners from Nelson, Leo Sandler’s efforts in the U19 downhill catergory earned him a gold and his time would have seen him reach top ten in the Elite grade.
