1.2 : SCIENCE LABORATORY
Prepared by Ms Sue Soh Ya Lee
A room or a building in which scientific
investigations are carried out. It is the
place where we study science.
SCIENCE LABORATORY??

Accidents happen everywhere including
Science Lab. So how do we prevent accidents
from happening?
SCIENCE LABORATORY??
Prepared by Ms Sue Soh Ya Lee
1. To avoid accidents to occur from mishandling certain materials & apparatus.
2. To obtain the correct results of the experiments.
Why are Rules and Safety Precautions made?

Bunsen Burner is
used to heat
substances

1. Light up a match / lighter
before you turn on the gas on the
Bunsen burner.

2. Use a test tube holder
during heating.
Don’t point the test tube
towards anyone

1. Close the air hole by turning the collar.
2. Bring a lighted match to the top of the barrel.
3. Turn on the gas slowly. 4. Adjust the collar until a steady
blue flame is obtained. 5. To obtain smaller flame, close the
air-hole a little or reduce the gas flow and vice versa.

USING A BUNSEN BURNER Bunsen burner produces 2 types of flame :-‐
Luminous Flame Non-Luminous Flame
Yellow colour
Air-hole is closed A lot of soot
Incomplete burning
Blue colour
Air-hole is opened Less soot
Much more HOTTER !!

Some chemicals in the lab are harmful to our body. Thus, hazard symbols are used to show nature of the substances. These symbols can be found on the labels of the chemical
boCles / containers.
